I Wish My Teacher Knew: Trauma, Stress, Loss, And Learning In Today’S Classrooms, Janie R. Goodman, Victoria A. Oglan

South Carolina Association for Middle Level Education Journal

As teachers and students continue to navigate the new normal of in-class, remote, and hybrid learning environments, three ongoing themes of trauma, stress, and loss have become pervasive. This collection of resources can give all educators a broader understanding of stress, trauma, loss, and learning as well as provide information that can be applied directly into work with students in the classroom and the community.

Shaking Up Assessment: Integrating Low And High Technology Tools, Lenessa Clark, Erin Besser Jan 2023

Shaking Up Assessment: Integrating Low And High Technology Tools, Lenessa Clark, Erin Besser

South Carolina Association for Middle Level Education Journal

Assessment is an important component of education because it communicates whether the academic goals are met within a class. Generally, assessments offer opportunities for educators to target their teaching goals and to measure the extent to which the expected goals are attained (Madani, 2016). Incorporating the right technology provides opportunities to enhance teaching and learning. This article presents several low- and high-tech tools that middle grades educators can integrate into their instructional practice as a developmentally responsive way to facilitate the assessment process.

Leadership In Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Holding Space For Psychological Safety And Peak Performance, Xin H. Ong Jan 2023

Leadership In Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Holding Space For Psychological Safety And Peak Performance, Xin H. Ong

Theses : Honours

This practice as research presents a case study of leadership in interdisciplinary settings, considering choreographic collaboration within technology, visual art, music and dance, alongside models used in teaching dance. I define leadership as influencing others to act towards a shared intention by holding space for psychological safety and peak performance. I synthesise leadership models relevant to my practice in a figurative ‘tree of transformation’, illustrating how Jim Collins’ Level 5 leadership, Robert K. Greenleaf’s servant leadership and C. Otto Scharmer’s Theory U model branch out from transformational leadership.

Within peak performance, Anders K. Ericsson’s concept of deliberate practice and …

Determination Of The Effects Of Added Methionine On The Toxicity Of Platinum Drugs In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Kassidy Owens, Jonathan White Jan 2023

Determination Of The Effects Of Added Methionine On The Toxicity Of Platinum Drugs In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Kassidy Owens, Jonathan White

Longwood Senior Thesis Proposal

Platinum (Pt) drugs are used in about half of all anticancer treatments. A common way to study Pt drugs is by using S. cerevisiae (brewer’s yeast) as a model cellular organism. One of the most commonly-used strains of yeast is BY4741, which is auxotrophic for (cannot synthesize) several small-molecule nutrients, including the amino acid methionine. Therefore, methionine must be supplemented in the cell culture medium. Interestingly, it is known that methionine can react with Pt compounds, including Pt drugs. Methionine-supplemented media continues to be used to study Pt drugs in yeast, especially BY4741, yet the potential for methionine to interfere …

(Dis)Advantages Of Device-Free Time: A Mixed Methods Digital Detox Study, Sandy Burrill Jan 2023

(Dis)Advantages Of Device-Free Time: A Mixed Methods Digital Detox Study, Sandy Burrill

Longwood Senior Thesis Proposal

As smartphone ownership has become more prevalent, so have studies investigating the outcomes of periods of separation from digital devices, termed “digital detox”. Using a within-subjects design in which individuals will partake in weekly device-free contemplative practices, the proposed study aims to fill gaps in current digital detox literature including the control of compensatory behaviors, the sustainability and real-life applicability of interventions, and an extended length of digital detox intervention periods. Mixed methods will be employed to ensure the capturing of a full range of experiences via both open-ended, qualitative responses as well objective measures of screen time and mindfulness …

Investigating Visinin-Like Protein 1 And Ubiquitinated Visinin-Like Protein 1 As Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Biomarkers, Yueming Wu Jan 2023

Investigating Visinin-Like Protein 1 And Ubiquitinated Visinin-Like Protein 1 As Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Biomarkers, Yueming Wu

Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) continues to be a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Despite significant progress in understanding the complex pathophysiology of TBI, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. The primary brain damage is acute and irreversible. However, secondary brain injuries often develop gradually over months to years, creating an opportunity for critical therapeutic interventions. In the past decade, research on TBI biomarkers has seen significant progress. This progress has been driven by the diverse nature of TBI pathologies and the challenges they present for evaluation, management, and prognosis. TBI biomarker proteins resulting from axonal, neuronal, or glial …

Role-Reversibility, Ai, And Equitable Justice — Or: Why Mercy Cannot Be Automated, Stephen E. Henderson, Kiel Brennan-Marquez Jan 2023

Role-Reversibility, Ai, And Equitable Justice — Or: Why Mercy Cannot Be Automated, Stephen E. Henderson, Kiel Brennan-Marquez

Faculty Articles

A few years ago, we developed the concept of “role-reversibility” in AI governance: the idea that it matters whether a party exercising judgment is reciprocally vulnerable to the effects of judgment. This idea, we argued, supplies a deontic reason to maintain certain spheres of human judgment even if (or when) truly intelligent machines become demonstrably superior in every utilitarian sense. While computer science remains far from that holy grail, generative AI is raging through systems as diverse as healthcare, finance, advertising, law, and academe, making it imperative to further shore up our claim. We do so by situating role-reversibility within …
