Treatment Of Allergic Rhinitis: Diphenhydramine Vs. Fexofenadine, Lauren Setzer Jan 2023

Treatment Of Allergic Rhinitis: Diphenhydramine Vs. Fexofenadine, Lauren Setzer

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Allergic rhinitis is a growing allergic illness brought on by the inhalation of allergens, resulting in a list of symptoms, including sneezing, watery eyes, runny nose, etc. Among the many treatment options available, H1-antihistamines are a popular choice for allergic rhinitis sufferers. First-generation antihistamines were the first to hit the market and were later discovered to be lipophilic, causing blood-brain barrier penetration and cognitive impairment. Second-generation antihistamines were later developed with lipophobic properties to eliminate any form of cognitive impairment. Both generations are readily available over-the-counter in tablet form, including two commonly used ones: diphenhydramine (Benadryl®) and fexofenadine (Allegra®). These …

Huntington’S Disease: A Systematic Review And Overview Of Treatments, Madison Mintz

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Huntington’s Disease (HD) is a genetic neurodegenerative disease that is the result of a mutation of the huntingtin gene. The gene is passed in an autosomal dominant fashion and is the result of multiple Cystine, Adenine, and Guanine base repeats. HD symptoms manifest as motor, cognitive, and psychological symptoms that can range of chorea movements to depression or apathy. The disease progresses through various prodromal and clinical stages as the disease starts to manifest. The current technique to diagnose HD is the use of direct genetic testing, which counts the number of repeats. Due to the nature of HD, both …

The Covid-19 Pandemic And Its Influence On The Human Immune System, Nicole L. Riha Jan 2023

The Covid-19 Pandemic And Its Influence On The Human Immune System, Nicole L. Riha

Undergraduate Honors Theses

COVID-19 rapidly infected the world, and scientists continue to research how the disease spread and killed as many as it did by analyzing how it affects the human immune system and referring to past pandemics. Since the pandemic is ongoing, scientists do not fully understand how the virus works and if lockdowns were effective. Nevertheless, a discussion on what is known about COVID-19's influence on the human immune system is needed. With an understanding of the COVID-19 pandemic, scientists can make more effective treatments for COVID-19 and learn how to manage future pandemics.

Nsaids And Oral Drug Absorption: Ibuprofen Through A Pharmacokinetic Lens, Courtney Gant Jan 2023

Nsaids And Oral Drug Absorption: Ibuprofen Through A Pharmacokinetic Lens, Courtney Gant

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Human pharmacokinetics is the study of how administered medications move throughout and behave within the body. Absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion are four integral parts of this field of study and are commonly known as the ADME principles of pharmacokinetics, but other processes are studied within the field. For orally administered drugs, the absorption process lies within the small intestine and colon, two components of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract; this bodily system is associated with many variables––many of which must be considered in the study of oral drug absorption. Often administered orally, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) make up a group …

Examining The Management Of Second Chance Schools: A Case Study Of Secondary School For Teen Mothers In Kenya, Nancy Chebet

Master of Education

Teen pregnancy in Kenya is on the increase and is widely attributed to the prolonged closure of schools because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and widespread exposure to irresponsible sexual behaviours and exploitation. Approximately 13,000 girls dropped out of school in 2021 due to teenage pregnancies. However, since children command the right to education and education is a priority in sustainable development goals, the feminist movement has established ways to ensure teen mothers are educated, in Kenya, there is the rise of schools designated for teen mothers. Therefore, the study sought to examine how these schools are managed this is because …

Sticks And Stones May Break Bones, But Only The Right Words Can Protect Human Rights: An Examination Of The Convention On The Rights Of Persons With Disabilities In Relation To Psychosocial Disabilities, Dailyah Rudek

Denver Journal of International Law & Policy

The U.N. Convention on the Right of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) is the most progressive document of its kind, containing admirable principles and mechanisms to protects the rights of people with physical disabilities and outlining international expectations regarding their treatment. Unfortunately, the instrument is woefully inadequate with respect to psychosocial disability and is leaving millions of people worldwide without sufficient protection. Future international conventions on human rights should specifically address persons with psychosocial disability and the CRPD must either be amended to appropriately address these disabilities or have such disabilities severed from its applicability as a new psychosocial-specific convention is …

Effects Of A Psychological Stressor On Methamphetamine Seeking In Rats., Kayla B. Cox Jan 2023

Effects Of A Psychological Stressor On Methamphetamine Seeking In Rats., Kayla B. Cox

Psychology ETDs

Although methamphetamine abuse and fatality rates are on the rise in the United States, there are currently no FDA approved drugs to treat methamphetamine use disorder (MUD). To better understand factors contributing to addiction, researchers have designed various rodent models of stress including the use of footshock, social defeat and maternal separation, however, these models involve physical or early life stress exposure and thus are less translatable to human psychological stress. The present study implemented predatory odors as a model of psychological stress and examined whether chronic exposure to these stressors enhanced subsequent vulnerability to a subthreshold dose of methamphetamine. …

Bicuspid aortic valve disease (BAVD) is present in up to half of all patients referred for surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) yet was an exclusion criterion for all randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) to SAVR. Nonetheless, approximately 10% of patients currently treated with TAVR have BAVD and available observational data for performing TAVR in these patients are limited by selection bias. Many in the cardiovascular community have advocated for RCTs in this population, but none have been performed. The Heart Valve Collaboratory (HVC) is a multidisciplinary community of stakeholders with the aim of creating significant …

Interagency Dynamics In Matters Of Health And Immigration, Medha D. Makhlouf Jan 2023

Interagency Dynamics In Matters Of Health And Immigration, Medha D. Makhlouf

Faculty Scholarly Works

When Congress delegates authority to an executive agency, it tells us something important about the expertise that Congress wishes to harness in policymaking on an issue. In the legal literature on interagency dynamics and cooperation, issues at the nexus of health and immigration are largely understudied. This Article extends this literature by examining how delegations of authority on issues at the intersection of health and immigration influence policymaking. In an analysis of how administrative law models apply to three topics in the shared regulatory space of the Department of Health and Human Services (“HHS”) and the Department of Homeland Security …

Effects Of Self-Adhesive Resin Cements Cured With Different Light Sources On Human Gingival Fibroblasts, Siriwong Wongsirisuwan

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Improperly polymerized self-adhesive resin cements (SARCs) can lead to adverse effects such as periodontitis or peri-implantitis. This in vitro study investigated the effect of 2 light-polymerizing units (LPUs) on the physical and chemical properties of 2 SARCs under varying simulated clinical scenarios and the responses of primary human gingival fibroblasts (hGFs) exposed to such procedures. Dental cement discs of SARCs (depth=2 mm, diameter=5 mm) were prepared with cylindrical acrylic molds. Kerr DemiPlus and 3M Elipar DeepCure-S LED LPUs were used to polymerize 2 different SARCs (RelyX U200 and Maxcem Elite Chroma). The polymerization protocols were either directly light-polymerized or through …

Health and well-being are key focuses for international organizations and governments around the world as one of the United Nations' (UN) Sustainable Developmental Goals (SDGs). The emergence of COVID-19 pandemic since late 2019 has led to not only substantial life losses, but also negative social and economic impacts that are relatively comparable to the "Spanish Flu" pandemic. The insights from public administration literature suggested that emergency and crisis management require collaborative efforts from various stakeholders across sectors and levels. However, the existing literature that studied the COVID-19 pandemic response under network perspective is still scarce in developing countries, especially in …

Respiratory Therapy Staff Retention: A Systems Thinking Approach, Jerin G. Juby

Full-Text Theses & Dissertations

Respiratory therapists are an integral part of the healthcare workforce in the United States. The healthcare workforce shortage accelerated by the COVID global pandemic has impacted respiratory therapy departments across the nation, with organizations struggling to hire and retain staff. The prevailing approaches in combating this is linear in nature and does not consider the complexity of the system. The purpose of this dissertation is to address retention issues in respiratory therapy departments from a systems thinking approach and to develop a prototype utilizing systems thinking methodologies and tools.
