Predicting Flower Stalk Production Of A Native Shrub Using Uav Structure-From-Motion Photogrammetry, Ryan Scott Wickersham Dec 2023

Predicting Flower Stalk Production Of A Native Shrub Using Uav Structure-From-Motion Photogrammetry, Ryan Scott Wickersham

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Climate change is threatening rangeland ecosystems, including increasing frequency of extreme weather, wildfire, and drought. Identifying which native plants are likely to be resilient to these ongoing changes is crucial for developing climate-smart restoration plans. Sagebrush is a foundational species across western rangeland, with variation in flower phenology and success that may indicate a pattern of resilience for the shrub and associated species. Analyzing sagebrush resilience through flowering success will help us understand how vulnerable sagebrush populations and post-restoration sites will respond to extreme weather events. We applied high-resolution remotely sensed data to map flower stalk production in sagebrush plants …

Gendered Singing Training: A Comparison Of Estelle Liebling And Richard Miller’S Strategies For Teaching Across Fach., Kristi Muzzio Dec 2023

Gendered Singing Training: A Comparison Of Estelle Liebling And Richard Miller’S Strategies For Teaching Across Fach., Kristi Muzzio

Dissertations

In the classical singing field, vocal Fach is an important part of a singer’s identity. Fach classification is initially assigned by gender and further separated within each gender based on characteristics of sound and appearance. There is significant debate over the similarity of techniques used to teach each Fach. Discussion among singers and the prevalence of publications related to training one specific voice type suggests that there are notable differences in technique across Fach, and by extension, gender. This research compares Richard Miller’s books on soprano, tenor, and baritone voice training with Estelle Liebling’s courses for soprano, mezzo-soprano, tenor, and …

“Coming-Of-Age” In South Pacific, The Sound Of Music, And Kimberly Akimbo, Sabrina Shah Dec 2023

“Coming-Of-Age” In South Pacific, The Sound Of Music, And Kimberly Akimbo, Sabrina Shah

Honors College Theses

This paper discusses the ways in which the theme of “coming-of-age” is explored in South Pacific, The Sound of Music, and Kimberly Akimbo. I use the term “coming-of-age” because that is the colloquial phrase for stories about maturation, however this term can include any transition from an innocent mindset to an enlightened one. This change often results from encountering harsh realities of the real world and learning to accept them. Although the transformation often happens in tandem with growing older, it is the process of experiencing the world which catalyzes it. Growing older can mean challenging your beliefs, exploring where …

Hypersaline brines provide excellent opportunities to study extreme microbial life. Here, we investigated anabolic activity in nearly 6000 individual cells from solar saltern sites with water activities (aw) ranging from 0.982 to 0.409 (seawater to extreme brine). Average anabolic activity decreased exponentially with aw, with nuanced trends evident at the single-cell level: The proportion of active cells remained high (>50%) even after NaCl saturation, and subsets of cells spiked in activity as aw decreased. Intracommunity heterogeneity in activity increased as seawater transitioned to brine, suggesting increased phenotypic heterogeneity with increased physiological stress. No microbial activity was detected in the …

Religion, Spirituality, And Mental Health Among Scientists During The Pandemic: A Four-Country Study, Di Di, Stephen Cranney, Brandon Vaidyanathan, Caitlin Anne Fitzgerald

Sociology

A vast body of research shows largely positive associations between religiosity/spirituality (R/S) and positive well-being outcomes. Such research has examined religious communities and general populations, but little is known about the relationship between R/S and well-being among scientists, who typically tend to be less religious than the general public. Drawing on nationally representative survey data on physicists and biologists in India, Italy, the United Kingdom, and the United States (N = 3442), this study examines whether the relationship between R/S and mental health holds for scientists, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. We find that net of statistical controls, higher levels …

The Blueberry Gall Midge Complex And Its Specialist Parasitoids, Monique Michele Raymond Dec 2023

The Blueberry Gall Midge Complex And Its Specialist Parasitoids, Monique Michele Raymond

Master's Theses and Capstones

The cosmopolitan blueberry gall midge complex causes serious damage to the terminal vegetation of blueberry plants. The nature of their infestation, paired with prolonged periods of abundance, requires an integrated pest management approach. Of all known parasitoids present in the system, members of the subfamily Platygastrinae are the only oligophagous clade specialized against true gall midges. In this study, we present the results of blueberry gall midge and platygastrid surveys in high- and low-bush blueberry crops in the northeastern and southeastern United States, along with an identification key, with emphasis on blueberry parasitoid Synopeas species to facilitate their identification.

Knowledge Engineering and Data Science

Classifying plant species within the Liliaceae and Amaryllidaceae families presents inherent challenges due to the complex genetic diversity and overlapping morphological traits among species. This study explores the difficulties in accurate classification by comparing 11 supervised learning algorithms applied to DNA barcode data, aiming to enhance the precision of species family classification in these taxonomically intricate plant families. The ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase large sub-unit (rbcL) gene, selected as a DNA barcode locus for plants, is used to represent species within the Amaryllidaceae and Liliaceae families. The experimental results demonstrate that nearly all tested models achieve accurate species classification into the appropriate …

Seagrass Epibiont Biodiversity In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Kathryn Wyssmann Dec 2023

Seagrass Epibiont Biodiversity In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Kathryn Wyssmann

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Epibionts on seagrass leaves contribute substantially to productivity and trophic interactions in seagrass ecosystems. Differences in epibiont assemblages and factors that contribute to epibiont diversity have been little studied on the seagrass Halodule wrightii in the northern Gulf of Mexico (nGoM). We used a metabarcoding approach to describe epibiont assemblages on H. wrightii leaves in four bays across the nGoM and to test whether epibiont assemblages differed spatially at local levels (within bays) or regional levels (from west to east). Furthermore, we tested if epibiont diversity was related to environmental conditions and/or seagrass productivity. Epibiont assemblages differed significantly between bays …

Single-cell analyses parse the brain’s billions of neurons into thousands of ‘cell-type’ clusters residing in different brain structures1. Many cell types mediate their functions through targeted long-distance projections allowing interactions between specific cell types. Here we used epi-retro-seq2 to link single-cell epigenomes and cell types to long-distance projections for 33,034 neurons dissected from 32 different regions projecting to 24 different targets (225 source-to-target combinations) across the whole mouse brain. We highlight uses of these data for interrogating principles relating projection types to transcriptomics and epigenomics, and for addressing hypotheses about cell types and connections related to genetics. …

The Covid-19 pandemic added a disruption in services, critical record-keeping, and data-gathering, which has further confounded experts looking for an effective path forward. As it stands, there is a significant gap in academic research addressing best practices for shelter site design, particularly as it relates to landscape. The role of landscape and greenspace within and around a shelter is not well …

Impacts Of Disturbance And Nutrient Addition On Coastal Dune Arthropod Communities, Kayla Beitzel Dec 2023

Impacts Of Disturbance And Nutrient Addition On Coastal Dune Arthropod Communities, Kayla Beitzel

Honors Theses

Coastal dune ecosystems are globally distributed ecosystems that occur from the tropics to the poles and serve as the first line of defense during storms. They are critical habitats for a variety of organisms and also play a critical role in stabilizing coastal habitats. These systems face increased pressure via urban development, recreational expansion, and sea-level rise (Newman et al. 2023; Webster et al. 2005). Insects are vital consumers in coastal ecosystems and act as regulators of plant growth. Low-diversity ecosystems, like coastal dune systems, often contain a higher abundance of low-diverse insect consumers (Ripple et al. 2021), which can …

How Sewage Pollution Affects Distribution And Life History Traits Of The Southern House Mosquito, Culex Quinquefasciatus, Catherine Dean Bermond

Master's Theses

Eutrophication from wastewater can cause fluxes of nutrients like and carbon and nitrogen in urban waters. One source of nitrogen in freshwater is from untreated sewage discharging from septic tanks. This causes a variety of environmental issues including harmful algal blooms, harming natural predators, and increased production of mosquitoes. Culex quinquefasciatus is the vector of West Nile Virus in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana. St. Tammany Parish has over 600 miles of septic ditches, which receive effluent directly from aerated treatment units. Culex quinquefasciatus oviposit in polluted waters, and larvae perform well in water with high levels of decomposing organic matter. …

Bayesian Learning Of Spatiotemporal Source Distribution For Beached Microplastic In The Gulf Of Mexico, David Pojunas Dec 2023

Bayesian Learning Of Spatiotemporal Source Distribution For Beached Microplastic In The Gulf Of Mexico, David Pojunas

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Over the last several decades, plastic waste has gradually accumulated while slowly degrading in terrestrial and oceanic environments. Recently, there has been an increased effort to identify the possible sources of plastic to understand how they affect vulnerable beaches. This issue is of particular concern in the Gulf of Mexico due to the presence of oil, natural gas, and plastic production. In this thesis, we expand upon existing Bayesian plastic attribution models and develop a rigorous statistical framework to map observed beached microplastics to their sources. Within this framework, we combine Lagrangian backtracking simulations of floating particles using nurdle beaching …

Tissue-Engineered Models For Investigating Nerve Infiltration In Fibrotic Microenvironments, Nikolas Ala-Kokko

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Neuron infiltration is involved in a multitude of diseased states and is critical in the regeneration of physiologic conditions. Modeling of innervation in three-dimensional, heterogenous, environments would allow early investigation in the crosstalk of neurons and native cells in normal and pathophysiologic microenvironments to gain an understanding of mechanistic functions. This would allow for greater insight into the role of metabolism, cell adhesion, microenvironmental alternations, cellular crosstalk, and signaling pathways that play a role in the promotion and prevention of neurite growth. In this thesis, with the construction of collagen-based hydrogels as the foundation for cell culture, we investigate cell …

Evaluating Habitat Use By Nekton In Widgeon Grass (Ruppia Maritima), Shoal Grass (Halodule Wrightii), And Unvegetated Bottom Habitats In The Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, Jessica Woodall

Master's Theses

Seagrass beds support high biodiversity and animal abundance, serve as feeding grounds for a variety of animals, offer shelter from predation, and act as a nursery habitat for juveniles. The species composition of seagrass beds can impact their use as habitat by animals. Two common species of seagrass in the Gulf of Mexico are Ruppia maritima (widgeon grass) and Halodule wrightii (shoal grass). The shallow coastal waters of the Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) support both species, but the use of each seagrass as habitat by nekton is poorly understood, which can limit management decision-making. Nekton communities were …
