Shifting The Male Gaze Of Evidence, Teneille R. Brown Jan 2023

Shifting The Male Gaze Of Evidence, Teneille R. Brown

Utah Law Faculty Scholarship

In this article I target the altar at which many of us worship—the pursuit of rationality. For evidence purposes, rationality is defined as decisions that are reasonable, objective, inductive, and free from the bias of emotion. This view of rationality is deeply embedded in evidence scholarship and practice. It is also reflected in evidence rules like FRE 403, which treat emotional testimony as unfairly prejudicial simply because it is emotional. The anti-emotion view of rationality reflects the thinking of Western philosophical giants. Plato, Hobbes, Descartes, and Bacon all thought that men should strive for rationality by suppressing their emotions, because …

Integrating The Spatial Pyramid Pooling Into 3d Convolutional Neural Networks For Cerebral Microbleeds Detection, Andre Accioly Veira Jan 2023

Integrating The Spatial Pyramid Pooling Into 3d Convolutional Neural Networks For Cerebral Microbleeds Detection, Andre Accioly Veira

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Cerebral microbleeds (CMB) are small foci of chronic blood products in brain tissues that are critical markers for cerebral amyloid angiopathy. CMB increases the risk of symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage and ischemic stroke. CMB can also cause structural damage to brain tissues resulting in neurologic dysfunction, cognitive impairment, and dementia. Due to the paramagnetic properties of blood degradation products, CMB can be better visualized via susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) than magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).CMB identification and classification have been based mainly on human visual identification of SWI features via shape, size, and intensity information. However, manual interpretation can be biased. Visual screening …

I reviewed scientific reports on the effects of glyphosate and GBHs on …

Ptsd, Cannabis Use, And Expected Symptom Relief: Gender-Moderated Mediational Effects, Luna Fernandes Ueno Jan 2023

Ptsd, Cannabis Use, And Expected Symptom Relief: Gender-Moderated Mediational Effects, Luna Fernandes Ueno

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Introduction. The widespread, debilitating condition known as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) often covaries with cannabis use. A substantial number of individuals report experiencing temporary symptom relief when using cannabis. Nonetheless, most of the existing research that delves into the correlation between PTSD and cannabis use heavily features male samples. This lack of data from women is alarming given the gender discrepancies in cannabis use and cannabis-related expectancies. In this study, our goal is to validate the interplay between expectancies and use in women and explore gender differences in our sample. We predict that both women and men will expect cannabis …

The Age, Period, And Cohort Effects On Crime Rates In The Republic Of Korea, Byunggu Kang Jan 2023

The Age, Period, And Cohort Effects On Crime Rates In The Republic Of Korea, Byunggu Kang

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The age–crime relationship has been a theoretical and empirical puzzle for criminologists for decades. Although the age–crime curve is often considered a stylized fact, a large body of research suggests that the age–crime relationship is dynamic under the influence of age, period, and cohort effects. The impact of these effects can vary across different social contexts, as the consistency or variability in socio-economic and cultural factors experienced by consecutive generations or populations differs in each context. Thus, the extent to which age, period, and cohort effects contribute to the age–crime relationship in various social contexts is a question that requires …

Development Of Ambient Ionization Mass Spectrometry Approaches For The Characterization And Quantification Of Psychoactive Small-Molecule Constituents In Complex Plant Matrices, Megan Isabella Chambers

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Drug chemistry sections of forensic crime laboratories are tasked with analyzing a variety of unknown materials, a subset of which are derived from plants. In comparison to the analysis of small-molecule drugs, these plant matrices are incredibly complex and present unique challenges. When traditional chromatographic approaches are used to interrogate these materials in forensic investigations, large amounts of time, resources, and funds are directed towards the extensive sample preparation steps required. Exacerbating the issue is that the matrix characteristics often result in instrument downtime to accomplish the maintenance required to address ingredients adhering to columns or clogging syringes, which are …

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Children can be affected by a variety of traumatic events as they grow up, but they still have the potential to show resilience. Along with the accumulation of research on trauma, resilience has also become an influential concept in the field of social welfare. Existing research has tentatively explored the socially constructed nature of trauma and resilience. From a social constructionist perspective, it is the narratives and interactions of people who have experienced traumatic events and other stakeholders that collectively shape the meaning of trauma and resilience. More importantly, these personal narratives, as well as larger social discourses, may have …

Assessing the ability of VHHs to protect ribosomes from the depurination activity of Ricin toxin’s(RT) enzymatic subunit, RTA, can provide insights regarding binding placement, epitopes of interest and role of affinity in neutralization is critical for the development of anti-toxin countermeasures. Determining the level of correlation between binding strength, binding location and elicited protection can be useful for future and ongoing research. Ricin is easily manufactured and considered one of the most toxic biological agents known. Without an approved vaccine, continued research to design and optimize therapeutic countermeasures is essential. Over the past decade single-domain antibodies (VHHs) have been recognized …

Sexual Reproductive Health Of Asian Indian American Women, Pooja Chugh-Clayton Jan 2023

Sexual Reproductive Health Of Asian Indian American Women, Pooja Chugh-Clayton

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Asian Indian Americans (AIA) represent the least understood ethnic minority regarding sexual health practices in the United States and the fastest growing population among all Asian groups. Public health practitioners face gaps in understanding communication styles and perceptions concerning sexual and reproductive health within the AIA community. Current researchers strongly associate transparency and openness in parent-child relationships as attributable to better and healthier sexual attitudes and choices in young adults (Romo et al., 2011). Sexual and reproductive health information traditionally stems from one's parents. Little is known about parent-child communication regarding sexuality and reproductive health within the Asian Indian community …

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Heavy metal exposure from anthropogenic pollutants negatively affects many marine organisms, including foraminiferan protists. Foraminifera are often used as bioindicators in benthic environments due to their sensitivity to environmental stress. Primary research has commonly focused on how heavy metals affect foraminiferal assemblages, distribution, ultrastructure, and shell morphology. Multi-chambered calcareous and agglutinated forams are the primary focus of such ecotoxicological studies; however, less is known about how heavy metals affect the physiology and shell microarchitecture of monothalamid agglutinated species. The research reported here represents an interdisciplinary environmental toxicology approach to study the exposure effects of heavy metal toxicants, lead (Pb) and …

Understanding Precipitation Dynamics Of Southern China Through Isotope Analysis Of Lake Yilong Sediments And Other Regional Records, Angelena N. Campisi

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The delivery of monsoonal precipitation in the face of climate change is a growing concern, especially within regions with high population density and a corresponding demand for freshwater resources. Within these regions, the monsoon season can deliver more than half of the annual freshwater for the area. Regional climate dynamics controlling these precipitation patterns within the Holocene (11.7 kyr BP−present) are poorly understood and difficult to differentiate within a single climate proxy from a single site. However, by cross referencing different proxies within a given region we can begin to discern general trends in precipitation dynamics on centennial and multi−centennial …

Dart-Hrms And Chemometric Analysis For Applications In Forensic Entomology, Amy Marie Osborne Jan 2023

Dart-Hrms And Chemometric Analysis For Applications In Forensic Entomology, Amy Marie Osborne

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Forensic entomology, the utilization of insects in the course of legal investigations, is a broad field which encompasses three main branches: medico-legal, stored-product, and urban. This body of research focuses on the first two branches. The first branch, medico-legal forensic entomology, generally applies to death investigations. In death investigations it is imperative to establish the time since death (postmortem interval) and cause of death. Both of these queries can be difficult to assess for remains that are in mid- to late- stages of decay. Carrion insects found on and near the body can assist forensic investigators in this task, as …

A Phenomenological Study Of Social Workers' Meaning Of Food, Mood, And Their Readiness To Adopt Dietary Interventions With Clients Who Are Depressed, Ronald Anthony Bunce

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

As incidence of depression rises worldwide and treatment effectiveness remains flat, interest grows in developing novel treatments to improve outcomes for those seeking help for depression. Research on diet, nutrition, and depression suggests that food affects mood. The literature addresses how a certain dietary pattern may be incorporated in clinical treatment as a modifiable risk factor with those presenting with depression, but the voices of social workers are absent. Given that social workers are the largest providers of therapeutic services for those experiencing depression, the field has much to contribute to the development and assessment of new, non-pharmaceutical, treatment protocols. …

Morality, Context, And Crime Decision-Making, Shaina Herman

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Recent criminological advancements increasingly aim to better understand criminal behavior in context. This is particularly true regarding how perceptions of legal sanction risk are anchored in reality and influence offending decisions. Yet research on extralegal considerations such as morality has not kept pace. The current dissertation integrates criminological morality literature, with psychological research on Self Concept Maintenance Theory (SCMT) and moral identity, into a perspective on moral decision-making dynamics that integrates personal and situational factors. I utilize three data collections containing randomized experiments to investigate the situational malleability of moral evaluations and the interrelatedness with moral identity and criminal intentions. …

Investigating The Association Between Adverse Childhood Experiences And Obesity While Considering Race, Ethnicity, Sex, And Sexual Orientation, Mariama Ceesay

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

AbstractObesity is a chronic disease that plagues about 34% of the world population and rising (CDC,2023). Obesity develops over time due to lifestyle factors, biological factors, and the environment. Life course epidemiology approaches understanding the etiology of obesity by pinpointing how particular events in a lifetime can facilitate later life obesity. One emerging important early life factor that may influence adult obesity risk is adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Rates of ACEs are higher in sexual minorities, women, and nonwhite individuals (Hughes et al., 2022). Furthermore, the rate of obesity is higher in women and nonwhite communities (CDC,2023). Knowing this information, …
