Thinking Local With Original Data In Ai And Machine Learning Research, David G. Taylor, Robert Mccloud
WCBT Working Papers
Sacred Heart University spent significant funds to establish an AI lab. Initially there is no ongoing research and no real plan for a research agenda. This paper details how the Jack Welch College of Business and Technology created and implemented an active meaningful research plan. It involves two key elements: thinking local and using business connections to foster active, impactful research. Surrounding communities, business connections, area environment, and other Sacred Heart University departments all played a part. The research plan also identifies a specific issue in working with local and business contact sources: the AI researcher almost never gets data …
How Are Dietary Patterns Associated With The Onset Of Diabetes In Samoan Children?, Cassie Lam Du
How Are Dietary Patterns Associated With The Onset Of Diabetes In Samoan Children?, Cassie Lam Du
Public Health Theses
Background: In recent years, Samoa has been experiencing rapid increases in diabetes, especially among children. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between dietary patterns (glycemic load scores) and HbA1c levels in children using a 117 item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Methods: Foods from the FFQ were categorized into food groups to run a reduced rank regression, modeling glycemic load as the outcome. The RRR generated a dietary score for each child, which was then categorized into tertiles (based on the score distribution). Bivariate analysis of glycemic load factor score was performed on the child, family, …
Subcutaneous Lesions And Systemic Infections: A Scoping Review Of The Clinical Implications Of Illicit Xylazine Use, Fatimah Maiga
Subcutaneous Lesions And Systemic Infections: A Scoping Review Of The Clinical Implications Of Illicit Xylazine Use, Fatimah Maiga
Public Health Theses
Xylazine, a clonidine analog, is a potent alpha-2 adrenergic agonist used as an analgesic sedative in veterinary medicine. Known to people who inject drugs (PWID) as “tranq”, xylazine has recently infiltrated the U.S. illicit opiate drug supply and has been associated with severe, necrotic lesions, sedation, and respiratory depression. Unlike opiates, xylazine has no human reversal agent or standardized withdrawal treatment protocol and its effects are unclear.
The objective of this study was to conduct a scoping review synthesizing the available clinical research and reporting on xylazine associated subcutaneous lesions and systemic infections. The study also sought to identify gaps …
Factorial Validation Analysis Of The Children’S Eating Behavior Questionnaires And Association With Weight Status: The Ola Tuputupua’E Cohort Study, Wenya Tian
Public Health Theses
Background: Childhood obesity is a pressing issue requiring a reliable tool for assessing health-related eating behaviors. The Child Eating Behavior Questionnaire (CEBQ) is a parent-reporting measure designed to assess multiple dimensions of children's eating behavior. This study aimed to assess CEBQ factor structure with data collected from Ola Tuputupua's Cohort and analyze the association between children's eating behavior and weight.
Methods: The confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and exploratory factor analysis (EFA) were conducted. Multinominal logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine associations between the CEBQ subscales with children's weight (healthy weight/overweight/obesity) as the dependent variable.
Results: The original eight-factor CEBQ …

Solving Contemporary Issues In Conservation Through A Market-Based International Park System, Ian Finley
Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies
In 2016, the United States National Park Service celebrated its centennial, which caused a flurry of calls for reflection and recommendations for improvements for national parks.1 People began urging the national parks to reaffirm their commitment to conservation and recreation, along with encouraging more research.2 It seemed to be a natural time to revisit the original “justification for both Yosemite and Yellowstone park [that] was the protection of unique scenery in the national interest.”3 That being said, in light of developments in national parks over the last one hundred years, it is important to challenge or at least qualify that …

The Impact Of Dog Therapy On Anxiety And Happiness In Hospitalized Children, Alejandra Mateos
The Impact Of Dog Therapy On Anxiety And Happiness In Hospitalized Children, Alejandra Mateos
Scripps Senior Theses
Research on the psychological impact of hospitalization on children and their families indicates that a hospital stay can lead to stress and fear in pediatric patients. However, positive aspects may be introduced into the lives of hospitalized children through interactions with therapy dogs that can improve their psychological well-being. The focus of this proposed study is to investigate the effect of dog therapy on happiness and anxiety levels in pediatric inpatients. Two hundred children between 6 and 17 years old who are hospitalized at a children’s hospital will either interact with a therapy dog or a dog plush animal across …
Who Votes And Why: Economic And Psychological Predictors Of Political Participation, Rhea Malhotra
Who Votes And Why: Economic And Psychological Predictors Of Political Participation, Rhea Malhotra
Scripps Senior Theses
At the centre of democracy lies the right to vote. The United States of America is considered to be an emblem of democracy, so voting is naturally a topic of discourse in colloquial spheres especially given the long fight for equal voting access. In general, voting is a way for citizens to advocate their needs, interact with contemporary society, and prove their affiliation with their country. That being said, the individual reasons to vote differ from citizen to citizen, but patterns may still exist which is why it is important to explore which variables can predict voting outcomes. By doing …
Early Intervention In Pediatric Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: A Longitudinal Study, Chloe Boxer
Early Intervention In Pediatric Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: A Longitudinal Study, Chloe Boxer
Scripps Senior Theses
Obessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a psychological disorder that causes significant distress for millions of people, but it is under-researched and often misunderstood by both the general population and clinicians. In pediatric OCD, life outcomes like symptom severity and duration of the disorder are typically negatively impacted. Previous research has demonstrated that early intervention of pediatric OCD has positive outcomes, but the adverse side effects of common medications along with the lack of comprehensive effectiveness in traditional psychotherapies for OCD suggest that new and potentially better options must be explored. A 2x4 Mixed Model ANOVA design will compare CBT and EMDR …

Doris Stevens: A "Fascist" Feminist? Stevens, The Inter-American Commission Of Women, And The Unión Argentina De Mujeres, 1936-1939, Jeannette Hunker
Scripps Senior Theses
Doris Stevens (1888-1963) was a U.S. feminist, suffragist, and member of the National Women’s Party. After the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified in 1920, Stevens, among other U.S. feminists, involved herself in Latin American politics, working to pass women’s suffrage legislation in multiple countries. Stevens was chair of the Inter-American Commission of Women (IACW) from 1928 to 1939. Eventually, a number of Latin American feminists, as well as members of the Roosevelt administration, sought to remove her from the IACW when her political tendencies posed a threat to both. Accused of being a “fascist,” Stevens was voted …
Who’S To Blame For Shame? Interpersonal Influences On Self-Conscious Emotions In Early Adolescence, Elsie Dank
Who’S To Blame For Shame? Interpersonal Influences On Self-Conscious Emotions In Early Adolescence, Elsie Dank
Scripps Senior Theses
Theories of self-conscious emotional experience suggest that shame and guilt arise as a result of negative self-appraisals surrounding one’s conformity to social norms; however, shame focuses on whole-self appraisal while guilt focuses more specifically on the actions one has taken. As a result, shame tends to be associated with more negative aspects of behavior, mental health, and wellbeing. Thus, it is valuable to examine possible aspects of development that influence individuals’ tendencies toward shame or guilt. Some evidence suggests that negative parenting styles are associated with shame, and positive parenting styles with guilt. This study aims to investigate whether the …

Telomeres: A Tool To Assess The Impacts Of Mining Contaminants On Riparian Songbirds, Lillian Krach, Bridger Creel, Megan Fylling, Zac Cheviron, Creagh Breuner
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
Mining has left massive environmental and physical scars across the landscape. Aquatic and riparian landscapes in particular have been significantly impacted by traditional mining practices. Waste products left over from hard-rock mining leech heavy metals onto the landscape and these metals spread from headwater streams to major waterways (Lottermoser 2010). Heavy metals have been shown to cause physiological stress and challenges to organisms depending on the metal and the concentration (Baos et al. 2019, Boyd & Rajakaruna 2013). While some mining-impaired areas have undergone restoration efforts, is it enough? Typical restoration methods replace the contaminated floodplain, but not the riverbed …

Predators In Paradise: Ecotourism And Predator-Prey Dynamics In Monteverde, Costa Rica, Andrew Cremeans
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
The use of camera trap surveys is increasingly common to investigate recurring diel activity of mammals. Investigation into the temporal overlap of mammals can provide unique insights into predator-prey dynamics. Understanding this relationship is essential to effectively manage and conserve both species. Extensive research across the tropics has found that daily activities of mammals were shaped by thermoregulation and trophic location in food webs. Although broad scale studies of daily patterns of mammals have enhanced our understanding of these constraints, many study sites included were remote protected areas under strict conservation measures. Such protected areas often had full complements of …
Understanding The Drivers Of Body Condition In Female Elk: Implications For Nutritional Ecology On Changing Landscapes, Nicole P. Bealer
Understanding The Drivers Of Body Condition In Female Elk: Implications For Nutritional Ecology On Changing Landscapes, Nicole P. Bealer
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
Ungulate body condition is often understood to reflect the nutritional resources on the landscape but is ultimately influenced by more than forage because body condition integrates both energetic costs and benefits. Factors driving variation in female body condition can be classified in both individual vs. environmental and bottom-up vs. top-down frameworks. My research evaluates how individual vs. environmental and bottom-up vs. top-down frameworks explain variation in ingesta-free body fat (IFBF) in female elk (Cervus canadensis). I used seven years (2015-2021) of IFBF data from monitored and recaptured female elk (n = 139) in the Ya Ha Tinda (YHT) population in …

A Comparison Of Divergence In Non-Introgressing Genes Across A Chickadee Hybrid Zone, Eliana K. Lowe
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
Hybridization between species plays a very important role in the overall evolutionary history of many taxa. The study of hybrid zones can also provide insight into how species are responding to environmental factors such as climate change and changes in species interactions. The hybrid zone between the northern black-capped chickadee (Poecile atricapillus) and the southern Carolina chickadee (Poecile carolinensis) provides an insight into how hybridization is affecting two distinct species. Black-capped and Carolina hybrids have reduced fitness in the wild. Hybrids tend to have higher basal metabolic rates, less muscle growth, and less neuron growth to …

Determining Species-Specific False-Positive Rates Using Visual And Auditory Cues: A Case Study With Sagebrush Steppe Songbirds, Amelia K. Evavold
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
Errors in wildlife field data threaten to bias resulting abundance and occupancy estimates if not properly accounted for or minimized. Methods to account for false-positive errors in wildlife data have not been as thoroughly developed as those for false-negative errors despite false-positives being present across diverse wildlife taxa and study systems. The calibration method to account for false-positives involves assessing the field detection method to determine how often false-positive errors occur in the field data. Rates can then be incorporated into estimations based on the field data to improve estimation accuracy. This study presents an application of the calibration approach …

From Prison Zooms To Hospital Rooms: Unmasking The Positives Of Remote Education, Molly Chao Yeselson
Scripps Senior Theses
From Prison Zooms to Hospital Rooms: Unmasking the Positives of Remote Education is the culmination of a seven-year battle for my life and my education. Remote and hybrid education are perpetually identified as the cause of pandemic-era learning deficits. My project seeks to challenge such rhetoric by detailing the positive educational experience I, a student with a disability, along with my incarcerated peers, have had thanks to distance learning. I argue that as the world shifts from a pandemic to an endemic approach to COVID-19, higher education must keep its virtual doors open to nontraditional students.
Combatting Bacterial Infections: The Efficacy Of Poly-Gamma-Glutamic Acid On The Prevention Of Nasopharyngeal Infections Among Individuals With Cleft Lip And Palate, Florence Pun
Scripps Senior Theses
Cleft lip and palate (CLP) is a medical condition where children are born with an unfused lip and palate. While surgery is required to fuse the lip and palate, there are other conditions that children with CLP face after surgeries, such as otitis media (OM), speech impediments, and difficulty breathing. Particularly, OM occurs frequently in individuals with CLP because the tensor veli palatini muscles cannot open the Eustachian tube frequently and ventilate the middle ear properly, even after surgery. This thesis is a research proposal to evaluate whether γ-PGA can be used in nasal washes to safely prevent nasopharyngeal infections …
Variation In Soil-Mediated Drought Response Traits Between Sympatric Species Of Mimulus, Anna Reitman
Variation In Soil-Mediated Drought Response Traits Between Sympatric Species Of Mimulus, Anna Reitman
Scripps Senior Theses
The ‘time limitation hypothesis’ is an evolutionary theory regarding evolution in angiosperms. The theory attributes ephemeral drought stress to transitions from a perennial to annual life history and an animal- to self-pollinating mating style. The most influential edaphic parameter on water availability is soil texture (i.e. grain size) due to its controls on porosity. Adhesion weakens with coarseness allowing for expedited rates of water loss via evaporation and percolation. The potential implications of coarse soil textures on major transitions in angiosperms due to drought mediation as the ‘time-limitation hypothesis’ proposes has yet to be thoroughly examined. Here, we grew two …

Ethical And Strategic Issues In Decarbonization Policy, Roger E. Meiners, Andrew P. Morriss
Georgia State University Law Review
Policies that force non-fossil fuel energy result in increased reliance on the rapid development and deployment of batteries and other technologies to meet decarbonization goals set by the United States and other industrialized economies. This Article focuses on batteries, noting that key minerals come from corrupt or hostile countries. Many key finished products come from China, thereby making the U.S. and the European Union reliant on an autocratic regime. Using cobalt as an example, the Article considers its production and the U.S.’s unwillingness to shoulder its share of the environmental burden of mineral extraction or refining. Further, the U.S. is …

Maternal SARS-CoV-2 infection triggers placental inflammation and alters cord blood immune cell composition. However, most studies focus on outcomes of severe maternal infection. Therefore, we analyzed cord blood and chorionic villi from newborns of unvaccinated mothers who experienced mild/asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy. We investigated immune cell rewiring using flow cytometry, single-cell RNA sequencing, and functional readouts using ex vivo stimulation with TLR agonists and pathogens. Maternal infection was associated with increased frequency of memory T and B cells and nonclassical monocytes in cord blood. Ex vivo T and B cell responses to stimulation were attenuated, suggesting a tolerogenic state. …
