Measuring Follow-On Innovation, Janet Freilich, Sepehr Shahshahani Jan 2023

Measuring Follow-On Innovation, Janet Freilich, Sepehr Shahshahani

Faculty Scholarship

How patents affect follow-on innovation is a key question for the patent system. We disaggregate follow-on innovation into activities that infringe patents and others that do not infringe but can be indirectly affected by patents. Replicating an important study using our disaggregated measure, we find that 87 percent of followon innovation is not patent infringement. Supplementing the study’s empirical strategy with data on patent expiration dates, we find that gene patents which are not close to expiration cause an increase in noninfringing follow-on research, but the effect disappears for patents close to expiration. Our nuanced measure helps better identify the …

Application Of A Secondary Opioid Risk Tool In The Management Of Patients On Opioids In The Adult Pain Management Clinic: A Quality Improvement Project, Monica Kastanaras Jan 2023

Application Of A Secondary Opioid Risk Tool In The Management Of Patients On Opioids In The Adult Pain Management Clinic: A Quality Improvement Project, Monica Kastanaras

DNP Projects

Introduction—Significance and Background: Aggressive opioid prescription practices play the biggest role in opioid-related behaviors and contribute to an epidemic of abuse. If started on long-term opioid therapy without screening, patients who are high risk for opioid abuse could overdose on their prescribed opioids. Current practice does not follow guidelines on monitoring opioid misuse behaviors utilizing a secondary screening tool for patients on long-term therapy.

Purpose: The purpose of this project is to help clinicians identify whether a patient, currently on long-term opioid therapy, may be exhibiting aberrant behaviors associated with misuse of opioid medications, using the Current Opioid Misuse Measure …

Biomarker Assay Development: Urinary Titin In Becker Muscular Dystrophy, Kimchi Le, Corrine Stahura Jan 2023

Biomarker Assay Development: Urinary Titin In Becker Muscular Dystrophy, Kimchi Le, Corrine Stahura

Research Days Posters 2023

Mutations in a structural muscle protein called dystrophin result in muscle fiber degradation and diseases such as Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD). Such muscle fiber degradation can result in large titin fragments being released into serum and excreted into the urine. Compared to current methods using muscle biopsy and serum collection, our study utilizes urine as a potential non-invasive method for monitoring disease progression in BMD by quantifying urinary titin fragments. This is done through development of an immunoassay based on the enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) format using liposomal technology as a method of detection. …

Facing A Modern International Issue: The Politics Of Biological Warfare In The United States And Korea, James Kang Jan 2023

Facing A Modern International Issue: The Politics Of Biological Warfare In The United States And Korea, James Kang

Research Days Posters 2023

Biological warfare, which is the deliberate release of infectious toxins or organisms that cause diseases, has historically been a major issue that the international community has strived to resolve. By analyzing peer-reviewed journals and pre-modern documents, this research project challenges the effectiveness of pre-established policies and collaborative efforts to prevent the development and usage of biological warfare. The modern perception of biological warfare is misinterpreted because it has adapted different connotations compared to its origins. The project will engage in a historical examination of the Biological Weapons Convention and historization of major political events, such as the Korean War, to …

Anatoliy Golitsyn’S Epistemological Disinformation, Daniel Reznikov Jan 2023

Anatoliy Golitsyn’S Epistemological Disinformation, Daniel Reznikov

Research Days Posters 2023

In 1961, KGB agent Anatoliy Golitsyn defected to the West. In his attempts to collaborate with American intelligence agencies, Golitsyn generated a number of memoranda to the CIA that accused subsequent defectors of operating as double agents. This paper interprets Golitsyn's writings through an epistemological approach to facts that distinguishes between situations in which what we know to be true is based on fact and situations in which we turned out to be right, but only because we were lucky (known as the Gettier Case). I argue, that Golitsyn's writings reflect a common epistemological strategy in disinformation campaigns that resembles …

The Influence Of Colored Light On Mexican Jumping Bean Larva (Laspeyresia Saltitans) Activity, Amber Tuske, Faith Summers, Andrés Rojo, Annie Wong, Cassandra Puglisi

Research Days Posters 2023

The Mexican jumping bean larva, Laspeyresia saltitans, is a moth larva that lives in the seeds of a fern, Sebastiana pavoniana, found throughout deserts in Mexico. Mexican jumping bean larvae are known to jump to avoid the intense heat and sunlight of their environment, but little is known about the specific cues that induce this behavior. We analyzed how different wavelengths of light affected the activity of the jumping bean larvae through exposure to red, green, purple and white light. Larval movement from their original position was measured, and we determined the greatest displacement occurred under red light, and the …

For Your Eyes Only: Do Visual System Differences Between Predators And Conspecifics Influence Perception Of Lizard Body Coloration?, Andrés Rojo Jan 2023

For Your Eyes Only: Do Visual System Differences Between Predators And Conspecifics Influence Perception Of Lizard Body Coloration?, Andrés Rojo

Research Days Posters 2023

Because predator and prey each see the world in different ways – with different color perceptions and visual acuities – whether colorful traits of animals arise as a result of camouflage or social signaling is not always readily apparent. Water anoles (Anolis aquaticus) are Central American lizards that use visual signals in conspecific interactions. We compared lizard and avian visual models to examine lizard conspicuousness to conspecifics and predators. Using the image processing software ImageJ and the plug-in micaToolbox, visual system models of lizard predators and conspecifics were applied to photos of A. aquaticus and their substrates obtained from a …

Best Practices For Bioacoustic Analysis Of Wood Frog (Rana Sylvatica) Advertisement Calls Over A Suburbanization Gradient, Lizzy Croft, Lindsey Swierk

Research Days Posters 2023

Identifying how species respond to an anthropogenic change in their environment is crucial to understanding species persistence and best conservation practices. Wood frogs (Rana sylvatica) can be found throughout all of North America in both human-disturbed and remote habitats, and they are therefore an excellent species to use to test the impacts of environmental change on their behavior and physiology. Wood frog mating activity includes male congregation and auditory chorusing behavior (i.e., advertisement calls). I explored bioacoustics methods for analyzing these wood frog advertisement calls across a suburbanization gradient to determine if and how suburbanization affects the pitch, duration, and …

Microplastics Reduce Earthworm (Eisenia Fetida) Biomass And Impact Behavior, Meisi Williams, Anthony Calder, Anna Brun, Gavin Code, Vashti Devi B. Mahadeo, Weixing Zhu

Research Days Posters 2023

This study aims to understand the impacts of common anthropogenic pollutants on earthworms (Eisenia fetida) and soil health. Earthworms were exposed to high microplastics and low microplastics, high and low salinity, imidacloprid pesticide, and combinations of salinity and pesticide. After 28 days, earthworms reared in different concentrations of microplastics showed significant reduction in biomass. The individual escape assay demonstrated that microplastics significantly reduced the earthworms’ ability to escape the induced stressor. We ran a pilot study for avoidance with the varying treatments and found that earthworms preferred the microplastics and high salt and pesticide environments. We found no effects on …

Research Days Posters 2023

Anthropogenic pollutants are a common issue, yet ubiquitous in natural environments. In this experiment, Eisenia fetida, a common indicator of ecosystem health, was exposed to varying pollutants and assessed using behavioral assays, escape response to stress, change in biomass, and avoidance trials. The treatment groups included; high (HMP) and low (LMP) microplastics, high and low salt concentrations, imidacloprid pesticide, and combinations of the latter three. Following experimental testing, pH and conductivity were measured to assess soil health. In the presence of microplastics, earthworms showed a significant decrease in their ability to respond to stress, indicating negative impacts on behavior. We …

The Combined Impact Of Maternal Major Depressive Disorder And Individual Major Depressive Disorder Results In Increased Amounts Of Dependent Stress, Caroline Cahill Jan 2023

The Combined Impact Of Maternal Major Depressive Disorder And Individual Major Depressive Disorder Results In Increased Amounts Of Dependent Stress, Caroline Cahill

Research Days Posters 2023

Stress generation is an idea explaining how symptoms of depression contribute to the occurrence of additional stress in an individual's life (Hammen 1991). Increased amounts of dependent stress can occur in individuals with current or past depression (Alloy 2010). Children of mothers with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) are at a higher risk of depression and also have increased amounts of stress generation (Feurer et al. 2016). This study identifies the combined impact of individual and maternal MDD on dependent episodic stress. Participants were 228 mothers and their 8–14-year-old children. Diagnostic interviewers assessed mothers’ and children’s histories of MDD. Six months …

Design And Synthesis Of Methyltransferase Inhibitors To Treat Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Infections, Michael Piacquadio Jan 2023

Design And Synthesis Of Methyltransferase Inhibitors To Treat Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Infections, Michael Piacquadio

Research Days Posters 2023

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a common opportunistic pathogen that is responsible for nearly 10% of hospital-acquired infections. P. aeruginosa infections have become increasingly difficult to treat due to rising antibiotic resistance; thus, novel methods of treatment must be developed to combat infection. P. aeruginosa releases pyochelin to acquire nutrients and disrupt host biological processes. Pyochelin-deficient strains of P. aeruginosa demonstrated significantly lower growth ability and virulence. Because of pyochelin’s role in virulence and the unique proteins involved in secretion, the pyochelin biosynthetic pathway is an effective drug target for P. aeruginosa treatment. Before pyochelin is released, the precursor molecule is methylated …

Implementing Nature's Rights In Colombia: The Arato And Amazon Experiences, Camila Bustos, Whitney Richardson Jan 2023

Implementing Nature's Rights In Colombia: The Arato And Amazon Experiences, Camila Bustos, Whitney Richardson

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Nature's rights approaches are being developed as an alternative legal means to enable justice for nature and, oftentimes, humans, too. This study examines Colombia's two seminal court-ordered nature's rights approaches which recognize ecosystems-the Atrato River Basin (2016) and the Colombian Amazon (2018)-as a legal subject with rights to protection, maintenance, conservation, and restoration. Developed as remedies for human rights violations, both cases offer opportunities to explore variations in nature's rights approaches and the relationship between efforts to enable justice for humans and nature. We build on existing scholarly engagement with the cases by contributing a detailed archival study on their …

Transcriptomic Responses Of Females To Consumption Of Nuptial Food Gifts As A Potential Mediator Of Sexual Conflict In Decorated Crickets, Bert Foquet, James Rapkin, Manmohan D. Sharma, Ben M. Sadd, Scott K. Sakaluk, John Hunt Jan 2023

Transcriptomic Responses Of Females To Consumption Of Nuptial Food Gifts As A Potential Mediator Of Sexual Conflict In Decorated Crickets, Bert Foquet, James Rapkin, Manmohan D. Sharma, Ben M. Sadd, Scott K. Sakaluk, John Hunt

Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences

Nuptial food gift provisioning by males to females at mating is a strategy in many insects that is thought to be shaped by sexual conflict or sexual selection, as it affords males access to a female's physiology. While males often attempt to use these gifts to influence female behaviour to their own advantage, females can evolve counter mechanisms. In decorated crickets, the male's nuptial gift comprises part of the spermatophore, the spermatophylax, the feeding on which deters the female from prematurely terminating sperm transfer. However, ingested compounds in the spermatophylax and attachment of the sperm-containing ampulla could further influence female …

Evaluating Non-Point Source Microplastic Pollution And Its Impact On Biota In The Huron River, Morgan H. Chaudry Jan 2023

Evaluating Non-Point Source Microplastic Pollution And Its Impact On Biota In The Huron River, Morgan H. Chaudry

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), like microplastics and pharmaceuticals, are a growing threat to aquatic ecosystems across the globe. Microplastics can be transported into waterways through a myriad of sources, including point sources such as wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and nonpoint sources, such as runoff. Microplastics can act as vectors for other CECs, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), into biota. The goal of this study was to evaluate 1) the importance of non-point sources of microplastic pollution to the Huron River, 2) if aquatic filter feeders ingest microplastics, and 3) how the interaction of microplastics and pharmaceuticals affect filter …

Revisiting The Geography Of Globalisation In The Covid-19 Pandemic Using Risk Theory, Kunphatu Sakwit Jan 2023

Revisiting The Geography Of Globalisation In The Covid-19 Pandemic Using Risk Theory, Kunphatu Sakwit

Journal of Social Sciences

My review paper is part of Covid-IAS Project, funded by National Research Council of Thailand. The paper focuses on the geography of globalisation in the Covid -19 pandemic. I employ Ulrich Beck’s concept of risk society to critically examine geography. Although Beck is not a geography theorist, his theory can be used extensively and alternatively to study the geography of globalisation. By drawing upon Beck, I argue that the geography of globalisation in the context of Covid -19 displays forms of dependency upon the politics of knowledge about Covid -19 vaccines. With the production of knowledge, the vaccines have caused …

Design, Synthesis, And Evaluation Of Acetyl Coa Synthetase Inhibitors, Michael Emmett Heene Jan 2023

Design, Synthesis, And Evaluation Of Acetyl Coa Synthetase Inhibitors, Michael Emmett Heene

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Invasive fungal species provide a challenge to the current drug landscape, only partiallymet by approved drugs. The Acetyl Coenzyme Synthetase (ACS) enzymes are an attractive target for antifungal compounds because normal mammalian cells do not rely on ACS for energy metabolism while fungal cells do rely on ACS. This work focuses on the design and synthesis of inhibitors of various fungal ACS enzymes. The first class of inhibitors is based on the 2-aminothiazole scaffold originating from a saturation transfer difference (STD) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) study and previous whole-organism assays. Ultimately, the 2-aminothiazole core compounds were found to not be …

Articles

BACKGROUND: Prior research supports a strong link between Alzheimer's disease (AD) and metabolic dysfunction that involves a multi-directional interaction between glucose, glutamatergic homeostasis, and amyloid pathology. Elevated soluble amyloid-β (Aβ) is an early biomarker for AD-associated cognitive decline that contributes to concurrent glutamatergic and metabolic dyshomeostasis in humans and male transgenic AD mice. Yet, it remains unclear how primary time-sensitive targeting of hippocampal glutamatergic activity may impact glucose regulation in an amyloidogenic mouse model. Previous studies have illustrated increased glucose uptake and metabolism using a neuroprotective glutamate modulator (riluzole), supporting the link between glucose and glutamatergic homeostasis.

OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized …

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

Chronic infections and cancers evade the host immune system through mechanisms that induce T cell exhaustion. The heterogeneity within the exhausted CD8+ T cell pool has revealed the importance of stem-like progenitor (Tpex) and terminal (Tex) exhausted T cells, although the mechanisms underlying their development are not fully known. Here we report High Mobility Group Box 2 (HMGB2) protein expression is upregulated and sustained in exhausted CD8+ T cells, and HMGB2 expression is critical for their differentiation. Through epigenetic and transcriptional programming, we identify HMGB2 as a cell-intrinsic regulator of the differentiation and maintenance of Tpex cells during …
