Background

HPA axis: the pathway that the body takes in response to stress

Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) tells the adrenal gland to release glucocorticoids which are considered “stress” hormones1

Glucocorticoids (GCs, cortisol and corticosterone) move energy in the body to facilitate flight or flight responses

Prolonged increase of GCs can have a long-term impact on morphology, immune response, and overall survival

In amphibians, glucocorticoids have a role in metamorphosis, so we predicted that different stages of development have a different response in the HPA A

Some stressors of Dyeing Poison Frog (Dendrobates tinctorious) tadpoles are predators, cannibalistic conspecifics, temperature and …

Causes, Responses, And Implications Of Anthropogenic Versus Natural Flow Intermittence In River Networks, Kendra E. Kaiser Jan 2023

Causes, Responses, And Implications Of Anthropogenic Versus Natural Flow Intermittence In River Networks, Kendra E. Kaiser

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Rivers that do not flow year-round are the predominant type of running waters on Earth. Despite a burgeoning literature on natural flow intermittence (NFI), knowledge about the hydrological causes and ecological effects of human-induced, anthropogenic flow intermittence (AFI) remains limited. NFI and AFI could generate contrasting hydrological and biological responses in rivers because of distinct underlying causes of drying and evolutionary adaptations of their biota. We first review the causes of AFI and show how different anthropogenic drivers alter the timing, frequency and duration of drying, compared with NFI. Second, we evaluate the possible differences in biodiversity responses, ecological functions, …

Macrophage Polarization Status Impacts Nanoceria Cellular Distribution But Not Its Biotransformation Or Ferritin Effects, Uschi M. Graham, Alan K. Dozier, David James Feola, Michael T. Tseng, Robert Yokel

Nanobiotechnology Center Faculty Publications

The innate immune system is the first line of defense against external threats through the initiation and regulation of inflammation. Macrophage differentiation into functional pheno- types influences the fate of nanomaterials taken up by these immune cells. High-resolution electron microscopy was used to investigate the uptake, distribution, and biotransformation of nanoceria in human and murine M1 and M2 macrophages in unprecedented detail. We found that M1 and M2 macrophages internalize nanoceria differently. M1-type macrophages predominantly sequester nanoceria near the plasma membrane, whereas nanoceria are more uniformly distributed throughout M2 macrophage cytoplasm. In contrast, both macrophage phenotypes show identical nanoceria biotransformation …

Based on a comprehensive review and critical analysis of the literature regarding the nutritional concerns of female athletes, conducted by experts in the field and selected members of the International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN), the following conclusions represent the official Position of the Society: 1. Female athletes have unique and unpredictable hormone profiles, which influence their physiology and nutritional needs across their lifespan. To understand how perturbations in these hormones affect the individual, we recommend that female athletes of reproductive age should track their hormonal status (natural, hormone driven) against training and recovery to determine their individual patterns and …

Journal of Urban Culture Research

The current study investigates the revenge concept of ultra-orthodox and secular Israeli Jews, manifesting in drawings and narratives. The convenient sample consisted of thirty-three participants aged 23-61 (12 ultra-orthodox and 21 seculars). This mix-methodology study included the qualitative part, which are two sets of drawings and narratives – “draw an unjust event you experienced” and “draw what you would prefer to happen to the person who unjustly treated you;” and the quantitative part included a self-report questionnaire of the following measures: demographics, history of traumatic events, and feelings of injustice. Comparison between the two groups revealed no differences in the …

Fostering Reading: Supporting Foster Children Through Virtual Learning, Evette Harrell, Leah Washburn-Moses

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Professional literature presents evidence that foster care agencies, foster parents, and educators are unprepared to meet the distinctive educational needs of foster youth. Although there is a general lack of evidence on specific interventions developed for foster youth, some studies have addressed the impact of tutoring. This paper studies the impact of a pilot program that paired 15 teacher candidates with 15 foster youth for virtual reading tutoring as part of a college course. Data were collected from youth, parents, and teacher candidates through surveys and focus groups. The results of this study suggested that the tutoring relationship produced several …

What The Judge Ate For Breakfast: Reasonable Consumer Challenges In Misleading Food Labeling Claims, Jessica Guarino, Nabilah Nathani, A. Bryan Endres

Loyola Consumer Law Review

Food, being an established aspect of global human culture and history, occupies a unique role in contemporary society. Given the massive market available for packaged and processed food, companies have taken deceptive marketing to new heights, resulting in a flurry of consumer litigation. The dominant test for -evaluating the scope of these cases is the reasonable consumer standard, an amorphous assessment which requires a probability that a majority of the general public or targeted consumers would be misled by said deceptive marketing. By analyzing state and federal consumer protection statutes, landmark cases, and elements of human and cultural psychology, the …

Cancer/Testis Gene Expression Changes In Metastatic Cancer, Clara M. Mosentine Jan 2023

Cancer/Testis Gene Expression Changes In Metastatic Cancer, Clara M. Mosentine

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Metastasis is the movement of cancerous cells to new parts of the body, often through the blood or lymph systems. Metastasis is classified as stage IV cancer, a prognosis that is significantly more difficult to effectively treat compared to earlier cancer stages. We are interested in assessing whether expression of Cancer/testis (CT) genes, a class of genes that are predominantly expressed in germ cells while also being abnormally expressed in a large percentage of cancers, is associated with cancer metastasis. Germ cells make up an organism’s reproductive system, such as the testis and ovaries, and exhibit cellular immortality and, in …

Change Is The Only Constant: How Dialectical Behavior Therapy (Dbt) Can Be Made More Culturally Responsive Across Treatment Settings, Angela Susan Van Berkel Jan 2023

Change Is The Only Constant: How Dialectical Behavior Therapy (Dbt) Can Be Made More Culturally Responsive Across Treatment Settings, Angela Susan Van Berkel

Psychology Doctoral Specialization Projects

This program design demonstrates how Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), a well-regarded, existing evidence-based practice (EBP) used to treat many transdiagnostic and complex mental health disorders around the world, can be made more culturally responsive across treatment settings. An overview of the literature regarding global access to mental health treatment reveals that much effort has been made to close the mental health treatment gap by promoting EBPs. However, most EBP research is conducted in Western countries using majority white populations, which calls into question the generalizability and effectiveness of EBPs among U.S. cultural and racial minority and international populations. Despite the …

Mechanism Of Pth Ca2+ Sensing On G-Protein Interactions With Pth1r, Difei Jiang Jan 2023

Mechanism Of Pth Ca2+ Sensing On G-Protein Interactions With Pth1r, Difei Jiang

Lawrence University Honors Projects

Parathyroid hormone 1 receptor (PTH1R) is a family-B GPCR that plays a crucial role in bone remodeling. Previous studies show extracellular Ca2+ is a positive allosteric modulator for one PTH1R ligand, parathyroid hormone (PTH), which is approved by US FDA to treat severe osteoporosis. Moreover, PTH residues E19 & E22 have shown to be involved in Ca2+ sensing. However, the effects of PTH Ca2+ sensing on intracellular G-protein binding are unknown. Here, we used FRET-based SPASM sensors to study the interaction between PTH1R and different Ga peptides. SPASM sensors, which are isolated in native HEK293T membranes through optimized protocol, contain …

Building A High-Throughput Yeast Two-Hybrid Assay To Screen For Novel Chronic Hepatitis B Drugs, Benjamin Glazer Jan 2023

Building A High-Throughput Yeast Two-Hybrid Assay To Screen For Novel Chronic Hepatitis B Drugs, Benjamin Glazer

Lawrence University Honors Projects

Hepatitis B is a vaccine preventable liver disease caused by hepatitis B virus (HBV). Chronic hepatitis B currently affects about 296 million people around the world, killing 820,000 annually. There is currently no cure for chronic hepatitis B, but research over the last decade has identified hepatitis B X protein (HBx) as a promising therapeutic target. Specifically, inhibiting the interaction between HBx and human protein DDB1 could disrupt HBx function. An essential step in the drug development process is to create an assay that is capable of high-throughput screening millions of compounds for activity against HBx-DDB1. This research aims to …

Investigating Neuroanatomical Evolution Through Proliferative Cells In The Astyanax Mexicanus, Sophie Staeger Jan 2023

Investigating Neuroanatomical Evolution Through Proliferative Cells In The Astyanax Mexicanus, Sophie Staeger

Pitzer Senior Theses

The Astyanax mexicanus is a single species of fish that has two very distinct morphs, the cave fish and the surface fish. 200,000 years ago, cave fish ancestors entered the dark and challenging cave environment of Mexico and were forced to adapt in order to survive. Such adaptions include larger fat reserves, more sensitive olfaction, increased neuromasts, and a unique nervous system structure. Yet, other functions regressed, as they lost their eyes and pigmentation. The Duboué lab has established a clear reciprocal relationship between the volume of structures involved in the neuronal adaptations, but the biological mechanisms underlying the development …

Growing Culturally Relevant Food At The Urban Farm: An Examination Of Sovereign Foodways, Place-Making Practices, And Autonomous Identity-Shaping, Dahlia Bess Zail Jan 2023

Growing Culturally Relevant Food At The Urban Farm: An Examination Of Sovereign Foodways, Place-Making Practices, And Autonomous Identity-Shaping, Dahlia Bess Zail

Pitzer Senior Theses

This paper examines channels of culturally relevant food production on the urban farm. It further investigates the connection between this production and the shaping of sovereign foodways, as well as how urban farm models provide space and resources for place-making practices and autonomous identity-shaping. This thesis shifts away from the notion of access to culturally relevant food and instead focuses on the multi-fold context that any food item takes on through its production, distribution, and consumption. This allows for a nuanced understanding of the role that culturally relevant food can play in immigrant foodways. Through case-studies at three urban farms …

Survey Based Investigation On Diet/Bmi In Indian-American Communities, Arjan Deol Jan 2023

Survey Based Investigation On Diet/Bmi In Indian-American Communities, Arjan Deol

Pitzer Senior Theses

Obesity is defined as a disease where abnormal or excessive fat accumulation presents risks to one’s health. It is also associated with a wide variety of metabolic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, sleep apnea, and cardiovascular health. In recent years, the rates of obesity have continued to grow in the United States, especially amongst the Indian-American community. Asians have a lower BMI cutoff ( ≥27.5 kg/m2) for obesity instead of the standard ≥30.0 kg/m2 recommendations by CDC due to a higher prevalence of weight-related diseases at lower BMI and carrying 3-5% more body fat than an average Western …

Restoring An Iconic Joshua Tree Forest: Natural Recovery, Restoration Success, And Soil Microhabitats On A Desert Burn Area, Riley Scaff Jan 2023

Restoring An Iconic Joshua Tree Forest: Natural Recovery, Restoration Success, And Soil Microhabitats On A Desert Burn Area, Riley Scaff

Pitzer Senior Theses

Wildfires are a novel disturbance type in the Mojave Desert, but have been increasing in size and frequency since the 1970s due to the proliferation of invasive grasses. Burned areas are more susceptible to invasion, which can lead to the establishment of a grass-fire cycle. For this reason, restoration is often necessary to facilitate natural plant community recovery, but the extreme desert climate makes returning native vegetation to burn areas challenging. Planting in nutrient-rich soil microhabitats could be a helpful tool to improve revegetation success, but has yet to be tested. This study surveyed natural postfire recruitment across two seasons …

“My Purpose Is To Assist”: How Chatgpt Can Push Liberal Arts Institutions To Think Critically About Themselves, Clare B. Martin Jan 2023

“My Purpose Is To Assist”: How Chatgpt Can Push Liberal Arts Institutions To Think Critically About Themselves, Clare B. Martin

Scripps Senior Theses

Since its release, ChatGPT, a chatbot specialized in writing content and answering questions in response to user prompts, has posed an unclear threat to liberal arts institutions. Can it serve as an effective tool for cheating? Can its responses replace work done in the liberal arts? This thesis argues that ChatGPT’s limitations—particularly its inability to think critically—prevent it from replacing real liberal arts work, which involves questioning, critique, and re-examination. If anything, this thesis suggests, ChatGPT can push liberal arts institutions to better promote critical thinking by serving as a litmus test for liberal arts-level work.

Expression Of Htyr In Drosophila As A Novel Model Of Parkinson’S Disease, Madeleine Callan Jan 2023

Expression Of Htyr In Drosophila As A Novel Model Of Parkinson’S Disease, Madeleine Callan

Scripps Senior Theses

Parkinson’s disease is a debilitating and often deadly neurodegenerative disease affecting a growing and large population. Its etiology has long remained elusive, and because no other organisms have Parkinsonian-like diseases, it is difficult to study PD using model organisms. Neuromelanin (NM), an insoluble melanin synthesized in the dopaminergic synthesis pathway in DA neurons, has recently been implicated in PD as a major causal factor. At high levels in DA lysosomes, it functions as a proteostatic pathway inhibitor–blocking dopaminergic neurons from breaking down harmful molecules until the lysosomes eventually degenerate as well as triggering autophagy, inflammation, and total neurodegeneration. Recently, neuromelanin …

Trait Self-Control, Ego-Depletion, And Mental Health In Non-Offending Minor Attracted Persons, Amaya Kathia Bonilla Jan 2023

Trait Self-Control, Ego-Depletion, And Mental Health In Non-Offending Minor Attracted Persons, Amaya Kathia Bonilla

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Research has focused on understanding the offending behavior of minor attracted persons (MAPs) due to the negative impact their behaviors have on some of the most vulnerable members of society. Further, many different models of impulsivity have been developed to explain these offending behaviors. However, limited research focuses on non-offending MAPs and gaining knowledge about what prevents them from offending. The present study attempted to fill this gap by exploring the relationship between trait self-control and ego-depletion on expression of sexual words. Additionally, the relationship between trait self-control and mental health was assessed. The present study utilized a survey approach …
