Disconnected, Frustrated And Withdrawn: Institutional Policy Implications For Equity In Student And Faculty Community, Jessica Marie Welsh

Dissertations and Theses

DFW rates at intuitions of higher education for students from underrepresented populations trended higher than majority students. A single explanatory case study provides insight to the factors impacting DFW rates in first-year gateway courses at a four-year, public, comprehensive institution. The study employed the use of focus groups of students, non-tenure-track faculty, and tenure-track faculty. In addition, institutional data was collected and used to triangulate to the data collected from focus groups. The inductive results showed multiple institutional barriers causing DFW rates among first-generation, Pell Grant, and/or students of color. Using Turner and Angulo’s (2018) theoretical framework of high-risk decision-making …

Background Discrimination Of A Neutrino Detector With Dense Neural Networks, Perry Siehien Jan 2023

Background Discrimination Of A Neutrino Detector With Dense Neural Networks, Perry Siehien

Dissertations and Theses

Neutrinos are subatomic particles that weakly interact with matter due to their neutral charge and small cross section. Detectors that search for neutrinos require sensitive instrumentation, which makes them susceptible to various background sources such as gamma rays. Additionally, coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering events, or CEvNS, are the weakest neutrino interactions at 1-25 keV, making them exceptionally difficult to observe. To understand the physics of CEvNS events within the detector material, the recoil signatures of relevant interactions must be determined. Traditional analysis methods are effective, but cannot be applied to energies below 50 keV, due to the overlap of discrimination …

Comparing Phosphorus Removal Efficiencies And Mechanisms Via Two Cost-Effective Specialty Adsorbents In A Cascade Upflow Filtration System, Sydney Kilgus-Vesely

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Finding solutions to treat water that contains phosphorus is an important effort due to the harmful impacts it presents to both human health and the environment. Phosphorus is considered a limiting factor in water oftentimes and therefore controls the growth of algal bloom in a water body. The increase of algal populations due to wastewater effluent, stormwater runoff, and agricultural discharge in Florida waters has a direct link to the event of harmful algal blooms such as red tide in coastal regions, eutrophication of waterbodies, and fish kills. Finding low cost, energy efficient, and low maintenance green sorption media (GSM) …

A Framework For The Automatic Identification Of Optimized Yield Surface Parameters, Kevin Hanekom Jan 2023

A Framework For The Automatic Identification Of Optimized Yield Surface Parameters, Kevin Hanekom

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Advanced engineering materials are designed to display tensile-compressive asymmetry (TCA) and anisotropy to provide unique attributes to critical components necessary in the hot section of turbines. The never-ending chase for higher efficiencies, and with them, higher temperature gradients, intrinsically leads to more and more of these complex materials, like single crystal turbine blades, embedded within the turbine environment. Mathematical models, known as yield criteria, allow engineers to visualize the mechanical behavior of these materials in various orientations under complex loading. Yield criteria are dependent on three key items in determination of their governing parameters: material test data, mathematical constraints, and …

Variational Autoencoder And Sensor Fusion For Robust Myoelectric Controls, Keith A. Currier Jan 2023

Variational Autoencoder And Sensor Fusion For Robust Myoelectric Controls, Keith A. Currier

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Myoelectric control schemes aim to utilize the surface electromyography (EMG) signals which are the electric potentials directly measured from skeletal muscles to control wearable robots such as exoskeletons and prostheses. The main challenge of myoelectric controls is to increase and preserve the signal quality by minimizing the effect of confounding factors such as muscle fatigue or electrode shift. Current research in myoelectric control schemes are developed to work in ideal laboratory conditions, but there is a persistent need to have these control schemes be more robust and work in real-world environments. Following the manifold hypothesis, complexity in the world can …

Dcaf14 Regulates Cdt2 To Promote Set8-Dependent Replication Fork Protection, Neysha Tirado-Class, Caitlin Hathaway, Anthony Nelligan, Huzefa Dungrawala Jan 2023

Dcaf14 Regulates Cdt2 To Promote Set8-Dependent Replication Fork Protection, Neysha Tirado-Class, Caitlin Hathaway, Anthony Nelligan, Huzefa Dungrawala

Molecular Biosciences Faculty Publications

DDB1- and CUL4-associated factors (DCAFs) CDT2 and DCAF14 are substrate receptors for Cullin4–RING E3 ubiquitin ligase (CRL4) complexes. CDT2 is responsible for PCNA-coupled proteolysis of substrates CDT1, p21, and SET8 during S-phase of cell cycle. DCAF14 functions at stalled replication forks to promote genome stability, but the mechanism is unknown. We find that DCAF14 mediates replication fork protection by regulating CRL4CDT2 activity. Absence of DCAF14 causes increased proteasomal degradation of CDT2 substrates. When forks are challenged with replication stress, increased CDT2 function causes stalled fork collapse and impairs fork recovery in DCAF14-deficient conditions. We further show that stalled fork protection …

Otud5 Limits Replication Fork Instability By Organizing Chromatin Remodelers, Angelo De Vivo, Hongseon Song, Yujin Lee, Neysha Tirado-Class, Anthony Sanchez, Sandy D. Westerheide, Huzefa Dungrawala, Younghoon Kee

Molecular Biosciences Faculty Publications

Proper regulation of replication fork progression is important for genomic maintenance. Subverting the transcription-induced conflicts is crucial in preserving the integrity of replication forks. Various chromatin remodelers, such as histone chaperone and histone deacetylases are known to modulate replication stress, but how these factors are organized or collaborate are not well understood. Here we found a new role of the OTUD5 deubiquitinase in limiting replication stress. We found that OTUD5 is recruited to replication forks, and its depletion causes replication fork stress. Through its C-terminal disordered tail, OTUD5 assembles a complex containing FACT, HDAC1 and HDAC2 at replication forks. A …

We have previously demonstrated that deletion of an intracellular leucine aminopeptidase results in attenuated virulence of S. aureus. Herein we explore the role of 10 other aminopeptidases in S. aureus pathogenesis. Using a human blood survival assay we identified mutations in two enzymes from the M20B family (PepT1 and PepT2) as having markedly decreased survival compared to the parent. We further reveal that pepT1, pepT2 and pepT1/2 mutant strains are impaired in their ability to resist phagocytosis by, and engender survival within, human macrophages. Using a co-infection model of murine sepsis, we demonstrate impairment of dissemination and survival …

Writing New Normals: A Study Of American Pandemic Fiction In The Wake Of Covid-19, Riley E. Droppleman Jan 2023

Writing New Normals: A Study Of American Pandemic Fiction In The Wake Of Covid-19, Riley E. Droppleman

Gaines Fellow Senior Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to explore the aspects of pandemic fiction that extend beyond the illness itself. In this thesis, I show that while the disease that spreads is a large focus of pandemic fiction, the truths that spring from these novels reveal larger societal issues, such as class hierarchies, racial inequalities, and failings of the government to fight the pandemic. In fact, pandemics act as catalysts for the uncovering of these societal ills, and the authors of pandemic fictions bring these greater faults of society to the forefront of their novels. I analyze three novels from the …

Data For "Linking Previous Experiences To Behavior And Health In The Honey Bee (Apis Mellifera)"", Rebecca R. Westwick, Clare C. Rittschof, Gavin P. Brackett, Cameron E. Brown, Bethany J. Ison, Zainulabbeudin Syed, Anna M. Foose

Entomology Research Data

An organism’s ability to respond to changing conditions can be vital to its success. Indeed, plasticity is a common feature of living organisms. Much of the research in this area, though, has focused on effects caused by environmental conditions. What has received relatively less attention is how social experiences and broader features of an organism’s social environment can lead to long-lasting changes in health and behavior. This knowledge gap exists despite the well-documented existence of health and behavioral effects after social interactions in certain taxa such as humans.

Social insects such as honey bees provide an excellent opportunity to better …
