The Universe In A Single Rock, William Peycha
The Universe In A Single Rock, William Peycha
Theses & ETDs
The Tabby House Ruins are located at the Desoto National Memorial within Shaw’s Point Archeological District in Bradenton, Florida. This research study is a continuation of the Integrated Heritage Pilot Project conducted in 2021. DNA extraction and analysis were the goals of continued research to prevent the loss of microbial heritage. The loss of access to the Tabby House Ruins is predicted to occur due to rising sea levels by 2040. 29 total samples were collected across two non-consecutive days in 2021 of both surface soil, soil cores, and tabby. Each sample was categorized by either soil or tabby, exposed …
Unpaid Labor, Social Reproduction Theory, And Transgender Communities Of Care: A Transgender Social Reproduction Framework, Riley Bedell
Unpaid Labor, Social Reproduction Theory, And Transgender Communities Of Care: A Transgender Social Reproduction Framework, Riley Bedell
Theses & ETDs
Marxist analysis has been frequently dismissed as a class reductionist framework which omits important considerations of many unique, interconnected oppressions within its theoretical vision of building a more equitable future. On the contrary, this thesis builds upon Marx’s foundational critique of capitalism to show how an intersectional feminist approach can be derived from his theories of alienation, expropriation, and emancipation. In doing so, I draw upon social reproduction theory and feminist movements to show how capitalist society shapes the oppressions and depends upon unpaid reproductive labor processes which occur within it in a contradictory, crisis-invoking manner. As a result, I …
Elucidation Of Cell Signaling Pathways In The Drosera Capensis Prey Capture Response, Cas Setterberg
Elucidation Of Cell Signaling Pathways In The Drosera Capensis Prey Capture Response, Cas Setterberg
Theses & ETDs
Drosera is a genus of carnivorous plants commonly known as the sundews. Sundews capture insects to supplement nutrient intake in nutrient-poor environments by entrapping prey in sticky mucus secreted by specialized trichomes referred to as tentacles. They exhibit thigmonasty, non-directional movement in response to physical stimuli, in their tentacles and leaves during their prey capture process. There is evidence that carnivory in the Droseraceae evolved from existing plant defense signaling pathways. The goal of this study was to explore the potential of reactive oxygen species (ROS) being involved as signals in prey capture response; of particular interest was singlet oxygen. …
Opportunistic Ospreys: A Geotemporal Systematic Review Of Osprey (Pandion Haliaetus) Use Of Nesting Structures From 1970-2020, Avery Myers
Theses & ETDs
In this thesis, I explore gaps in the narrative history of American osprey (Pandion haliaetus carolinensis) populations, focusing on increased human-wildlife conflicts following the recovery of the species. I conducted a systematic review of osprey literature to model the total number of occupied nests, number of occupied nests on artificial structures, and proportion of occupied nests on artificial structures in the United States from 1970 to 2020. The systematic review yielded 30 usable sources. The reported difference in proportion of nests on artificial structures before and after 1995 was -0.502 (-0.520, -0.483), indicating an increase in the use of artificial …
The Effect Of Brevetoxin On Clams Using Metabolomics, Nicole Mckenna
The Effect Of Brevetoxin On Clams Using Metabolomics, Nicole Mckenna
Theses & ETDs
Algal blooms are a worldwide issue. They are normally influenced by excess nutrients in the environment, but can have many causes. One algal bloom on the Gulf Coast of Florida is Red Tide, caused by the dinoflagellate Karenia brevis. This algal bloom produces toxins called brevetoxins, which can kill marine organisms, and cause respiratory irritation and other symptoms in mammals. The Northern Hardshell Clam (Mercenaria mercenaria) is one marine species that is affected by brevetoxins and can be an affective bioindicator in an ecosystem. However, there is limited research on the chemical impact that brevetoxins have on clams, especially utilizing …
Fashion Confronts The Gender Binary: Unisex, Androgynous, And Queer Approaches In Contemporary Genderless Fashion, Jordan Grubbs
Fashion Confronts The Gender Binary: Unisex, Androgynous, And Queer Approaches In Contemporary Genderless Fashion, Jordan Grubbs
Theses & ETDs
The rise in everyday feminism and other social justice movements over the past decade has resulted in an ever-widening call, aided by social media, to revolutionize representation in fashion. Similar to the 1960s and 70s emergence of unisex and androgynous fashion alongside the Women’s Liberation Movement, the contemporary fashion industry – particularly highfashion – is attempting to accompany and encourage gender revolution today. This thesis will examine three of the most popular industry approaches to circumventing traditional gendered expectations and perceptions of dress. Chapter One, entitled “Unisex Fashion: Removing Gender from the Equation,” calls attention to a unisex approach to …
Aflatoxin: Global Health Impacts And Methods For Removal And Mitigation, Destin Huebner
Aflatoxin: Global Health Impacts And Methods For Removal And Mitigation, Destin Huebner
Theses & ETDs
Aflatoxin is classified as a class 1 carcinogen by the International Cancer Research Institute and is synthesized by fungi of the genus Aspergillus, but more specifically A. flavus. While being exposed to significant amounts of aflatoxin can lead to death in acute cases, long term exposure can proceed to conditions such as malnutrition, developmental delays, and immunosuppression; this is accomplished through various aflatoxin metabolites, some of which concentrate in specific parts of the body. Although it is known how aflatoxin impacts the integrity of crops, industries such as those that produce Korean rice wine remain uncertain as to how this …
Brain Connectivity And Mechanoreception In Marine Mammals, Alexis Mingos
Brain Connectivity And Mechanoreception In Marine Mammals, Alexis Mingos
Theses & ETDs
Marine mammals returned to the water through several temporally separated lineages, each species adapting somatosensory mechanisms that allow them to locate and consume food. The species in this study have adapted to underwater environments through different modalities. Manatees, harbor seals, and sea otters all utilize mystacial vibrissae, while manatees also possess lightly scattered thin vibrissae over the entire body, and sea otters employ their sensitive paws for active touch. These sensory differences provide an interesting opportunity to compare and examine the neuroanatomy of mechanoreception in differentially adapted marine species. The brain reflects these adaptations, creating “pathways” formed by neuronal connectivity, …
With Brains Like These Who Needs Enemies: How To Write A Play When Your Brain Fights You At Every Step, Clementine Mead
With Brains Like These Who Needs Enemies: How To Write A Play When Your Brain Fights You At Every Step, Clementine Mead
Theses & ETDs
Demonstrating the mind on stage is a difficult task and often depends on the use of staging different bodies. When a character is not saying every thought out loud, it is nearly impossible to tell what exactly is happening inside their heads. In this thesis, I explore the relationship between memory and stage, mind and body, and art and artist. Through the analysis of biographical works and plays that display interactions of the mind and body on stage, I was able to craft a play of my own that demonstrates the same explorations. Within these texts you can find that …
Effects Of Visitor Disturbance On The Flushing Behaviors Of American Alligators (Alligator Mississippiensis) In Myakka River State Park, Zane Cullinane Walsh
Effects Of Visitor Disturbance On The Flushing Behaviors Of American Alligators (Alligator Mississippiensis) In Myakka River State Park, Zane Cullinane Walsh
Theses & ETDs
Anthropogenic presences and influence spread into wildlife spaces and can negatively affect species living in areas that were previously less disturbed. In this thesis, a study was conducted in which the flight initiation distances and flushing behaviors of American alligators in a wild-living congregation within the Myakka River State Park Wilderness Preserve, an area within a state park in Southern Florida, were measured and analyzed. Flight initiation distances in reptiles are an important component of population risk assessment, which influences wildlife management decisions, that often goes understudied in these species. Potential negative effects of an increased human presence in wild …
Identifying Biomarkers Of Brevetoxin Exposure In The Northern Quahog Metabolome With 1h Nmr Spectroscopy, David Ponce
Identifying Biomarkers Of Brevetoxin Exposure In The Northern Quahog Metabolome With 1h Nmr Spectroscopy, David Ponce
Theses & ETDs
The northern quahog (Mercenaria mercenaria Linnaeus, 1758) is heavily valued for its ability to filter excess nutrients from marine ecosystems, and as a delicacy in the shellfish aquaculture industry. However, humans may contract Neurotoxic Shellfish Poisoning from consuming northern quahogs that have accumulated toxins from the dinoflagellate Karenia brevis in their tissues, and current methods of toxin analysis are notoriously slow and inefficient. This study used 1H NMR spectroscopy to identify gill metabolites that may serve as immediate biomarkers of brevetoxin exposure in afflicted northern quahogs. A total of 70 adult northern quahogs were exposed to brevetoxin PbTx-2 for 24 …
An Investigation Into Harmful Algal Bloom Contributors, Isabella Chandler
An Investigation Into Harmful Algal Bloom Contributors, Isabella Chandler
Theses & ETDs
These projects span a two-year time period in which phytoplankton was sampled from Sarasota Bay. Samples were examined in order to find potential harmful algal bloom (HAB) contributors in addition to the commonly reported Karenia brevis. It was identified that both Gonyaulax and Pseudo-nitzschia genera found in The Bay could also be contributing to HAB events in Sarasota Bay. The first study (Chapter 1) spanned a year (2021) and looked at differences in the three groups' distribution at three different sites. This study found that Gonyaulax is an abundant organism and could be contributing to the HABs in the area. …
Diurnal Cortisol, Mood, And Hormonal Contraceptives: An Examination Of The Differences In Diurnal Cortisol Patterns And Mood Between Hormonal Contraceptive Users And Non-Users, Irene Hanabergh
Theses & ETDs
Cortisol is a steroid hormone that plays a role in the physiological response to stress. One standard pattern of cortisol change is the diurnal rhythm which peaks in the morning and declines throughout the day. Disruptions in this pattern are linked to chronic stress and poorer mental health outcomes. Previous research has found blunted cortisol responses as well as increased stress and depressive scores in hormonal contraceptive (HC) users compared to non-users. Yet little is known about the effect of HC use on average diurnal cortisol patterns. The goal of this study is to examine differences in diurnal cortisol pattern …
An Eye Is A Window Into The Soul: An Eye Tracking Study Exploring The In-Group Empathy Hypothesis, Jamie Friedman
An Eye Is A Window Into The Soul: An Eye Tracking Study Exploring The In-Group Empathy Hypothesis, Jamie Friedman
Theses & ETDs
Prejudice intervention focuses on decreasing prejudice and discrimination through means such as raising empathy and perspective taking. However, a person’s empathy may not extend to everyone. For example, the in-group empathy hypothesis states that individuals showcase more empathy toward members of their in-group than toward members of their out-group. In this study, I used eye tracking to explore how the in-group empathy hypothesis relates to participant behaviors when viewing racial microaggressions directed towards members of their racial in-groups and out-group. I operationalized various eye tracking metrics to measure allocation of attention and interest when participants watched clips with a target …
성장통(Growing Pains): Animating The Intersection Of Early Menarche And The Model Minority Stereotype On Adolescent Development, Payton Sherer
성장통(Growing Pains): Animating The Intersection Of Early Menarche And The Model Minority Stereotype On Adolescent Development, Payton Sherer
Theses & ETDs
Adolescence, particularly the onset of puberty, is a critical window in which a host of physiological and psychological changes occur, creating a stressful environment for adolescents. Due to the different hormonal changes in puberty in males and females, this window could have different outcomes based on sex. For females, the age at which first menstrual cycle begins, known as menarche, has fallen in recent decades. Critically, early menarche has been linked to negative mental health outcomes. Puberty is also associated with social and cultural challenges that can create a vulnerable period exacerbated by biological changes. One such social pressure is …
Strands In The Web Of Life: The Mayan Milpa And Ways Of Relating To Nature, Ellie Jalbuena Cook
Strands In The Web Of Life: The Mayan Milpa And Ways Of Relating To Nature, Ellie Jalbuena Cook
Theses & ETDs
The indigenous Maya people of the Yucatán cultivate milpa, a complex agroecosystem. The milpa system involves maize, beans, and squash in a polyculture along with a wide array of other plants and animals in a shifting cultivation style in which patches of forest are periodically cleared, cultivated for a few years, and then allowed to grow back into the surrounding forest. The milpa is integrated into both the community of Mayan society and the forest ecosystem, guided by an epistemic value system based on a respect for the interdependent animacy of the land and the life in the ecology. In …
Crocodile Talk: Structural Analysis Of American And Morelet’S Crocodile Vocalizations In Belize, Helena Wood Barron
Crocodile Talk: Structural Analysis Of American And Morelet’S Crocodile Vocalizations In Belize, Helena Wood Barron
Theses & ETDs
Out of the extant reptilians, crocodilians are the most vocal (Vergne et al, 2009). Crocodiles use vocalizations for social interactions, such as courting and territorial defense (Vergne et al, 2012), as well as distress or threat calls (Boucher et al, 2020). There are two types of crocodiles living in Belize, the American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus) and the Morelet’s crocodile (Crocodylus moreletii), and they have been hypothesized to interbreed based on genetic evidence and morphological traits of both species being exhibited in individuals (Ray et al, 2004). The overall aim of this project was to analyze the structure of calls made …
Enhanced Efficiency In Natural Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells By Fine Tuning Pigment Interactions, Katie Herbert
Enhanced Efficiency In Natural Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells By Fine Tuning Pigment Interactions, Katie Herbert
Theses & ETDs
Traditional methods of solar energy are expensive and inaccessible for many people, especially in times of such economic disparity. Natural dye-sensitized solar cells may provide a solution to this due to their low-cost, accessibility and simple fabrication methods. This form of energy remains in preindustrial phases due to low efficiency and rapid degradation of the dye. This thesis proposes that by fine tuning pigment interactions, both through intentional selection of compounds present and purification by thin layer chromatography, efficiencies in dye-sensitized solar cells can be enhanced. In crude dye samples of anthocyanin containing dyes, efficiencies increased slightly with the addition …
Germanic History: Summarization And Imagery, Making Academic Texts Approachable, Tyrell Daniels
Germanic History: Summarization And Imagery, Making Academic Texts Approachable, Tyrell Daniels
Theses & ETDs
When studying historical events, it is important to have the context to deepen understanding. One way to do this is through imagery, allowing readers to visualize what they read in the text. This is especially important when geographical knowledge is lacking or important territorial shifts are mentioned. To address the topic of visual aids accompanying text, we chose five time periods that were historically significant to the Germanic region and the world, past or present. We chose the 30 Years’ War, German Zollverein, German Unification, World War I, and World War II. We gathered sources for each time period, summarized …
Locomotory Behaviors In Three Marine-Associated Arthropods: A Film-Based Analysis Of Aratus Pisonii (Edwards, 1837) (Crusacea; Decapoda; Sesarmidae), Ligia Baudiniana (Edwards, 1840) (Crusracea; Isopoda, Ligiidae), & Anurida Maritima (Guerin-Menevill, 1836), (Crustacea; Collembola, Neanuridae), Lydia Dykema
Theses & ETDs
Marine-associated arthropods are subject to a wide array of environmental challenges. While they risk desiccation on land, they are subject to a variety of threats in water ranging from its chemistry and physical characteristics to predation. Aratus pisonii, Ligia baudiniana, and Anurida maritima– semiterrestrial marine-associated arthropods– demonstrate tidal-driven daily rhythms that minimize their time in the water. Their existence at the land-water interface nevertheless forces them to enter the water at times where it is critical that the animals be capable of moving quickly and effectively back to land. Through this study, I sought to understand what locomotory forms and …
Process Depletion In Emotion Regulation, Christian Capistrano Boeckner
Process Depletion In Emotion Regulation, Christian Capistrano Boeckner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The ability to regulate emotions via reappraisal is considered an important skill that is associated with greater well-being. However, the effectiveness of emotion regulation is impacted by individual differences, and its adaptiveness may vary depending on context. For example individuals from vulnerable populations such as children and mothers in the context of poverty often demonstrate less optimal reappraisal, that is in turn associated with maladaptive behaviors. Given its consequence on mental health, it is critical to understand mechanisms that influence reappraisal to maximize its adaptive consequences. The current study explored conditions that could either facilitate or impair reappraisal success. We …
Improving Cervical Spine Fracture Detection In Ct Imaging With Yolov5 Data Augmentation Strategies, Salem Ghanem Ali Al-Ali
Improving Cervical Spine Fracture Detection In Ct Imaging With Yolov5 Data Augmentation Strategies, Salem Ghanem Ali Al-Ali
Theses
Cervical spine fractures are the most common type of spinal injury, with over 17,730 spinal cord injuries occurring annually in the United States alone. The prevalence of spinal fractures is highest among the elderly, and these fractures are often difficult to detect due to the possibility of coexisting degenerative illnesses and osteoporosis. Computed Tomography (CT) is increasingly being used for the imaging diagnosis of adult spine fractures, replacing traditional radiography. An accurate and timely diagnosis is critical to preventing neurological degeneration and paralysis following trauma. Machine learning algorithms, such as the YOLO series developed by Ultralytics, have emerged as valuable …
History’S Pathologists: Oswald Spengler, Jacques Barzun, John Lukacs And The Dying Of The West, Michael A. Flannery
History’S Pathologists: Oswald Spengler, Jacques Barzun, John Lukacs And The Dying Of The West, Michael A. Flannery
Libraries Professional Work
This essay explores the perceived weakening and even possible collapse of Western Civilization as seen through the eyes of three prominent historians: Oswald Spengler, Jacques Barzun, and John Lukacs. Each of them has provoked controversy due to their pathologies of the West and their conclusion that its vital signs (identified as religion, science, and education), suggest a sick and possibly dying patient. All three developed metahistories that led, in Dermot Quinn’s words, to “that architecture of greater meaning by which historical facts make themselves intelligible.” That is to say, beyond their specific historical narratives, each made use of a wider …

Elucidating The Impact Of Western Diet On Bone Marrow Cytokine Signatures: Understanding Poor Outcomes In Susceptibility To Infection And Progression Of Cancer, Lahari Kondeti
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Among other disease outcomes, obesity is associated with 1) reduction in long-lasting immune protection and 2) acquisition of cancer. Given our interest in hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell (HSPC) dynamics, we questioned if similar mechanisms in the bone marrow microenvironment contribute to obesity-induced HSPC alterations responsible for 1) decreased immune protection and 2) transformation of HSPCs in the pathogenesis of hematologic malignancies. The negative effects of obesity on immune protection are most notably established in influenza models. Influenza infection susceptibility is increased and influenza vaccine-induced immunity wains in obese individuals. Ongoing studies aim to define mechanisms for waning immunity at …
