Differences In The Neurological Pathways Of Innate And Learned Fear, Efrat Jacob
Differences In The Neurological Pathways Of Innate And Learned Fear, Efrat Jacob
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Fear is a fundamental emotion for survival. However, not all fears are the same, leading to a necessary distinction between the two main subsections of fear; innate and learned. This research paper investigates whether the neural pathways underlying innate and learned fear are independent of each other. Using optogenetics and pharmacology, researchers have manipulated specific brain regions and circuits involved in fear processing, such as the amygdala, hypothalamus, and PAG (periaqueductal gray). By measuring the behavioral and physiological indicators of fear in rodents exposed to different types of stimuli, research suggests that there may be partial overlap between the neural …

Keratoconus: The Conical Corneal Conundrum And Its Evolving Treatments, Sima Friedman
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Keratoconus is an eye disease that transforms the shape of the cornea from its normal oval shape to a conical shape. This can lead to a decrease in vision and, if not treated, can lead to a loss of vision. Depending on the severity and progression of each case, many treatment options are now available, ranging from cross linking procedures and special contact lenses to corneal transplants.

The Antibacterial And Anti-Inflammatory Properties Of Probiotics Against Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (Mrsa), Punploy Klawkla
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Background: Dysbiosis refers to an imbalance in the types of microorganisms in a person’s natural f lora, associated with several diseases like asthma, type 2 diabetes, and atopic dermatitis (AD). Reports indicate that Staphylococcus aureuscolonizes about 60%-100% of AD skin, causing barrier dysfunction through virulence factors such as superantigens, enzymes, and other proteins. These factors disrupt skin homeostasis by affecting keratinocytes and immune cells. Additionally, dysbiosis in AD skin is marked by a reduction in commensal microbes like Staphylococcus epidermidis and Corynebacterium spp. In recent years, probiotics have been studied in both live bacteria and bacterial lysate forms. Most studies …

Bedbug Education, Treatment, And Prevention, Elizabeth Bedford
Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects
Bedbugs, Cimex lectularius, have become a severe issue in recent years due to human travel, immigration, and importation of products. Unfortunately, most people do not know bedbug biology and therefore do not manage these arthropods correctly. The information available to people online and from pest control professionals must be corrected. Education and proper treatment are necessary to eradicate pests and bedbugs in homes, commercial buildings, and other places. A1 Home Pest Control conducted a study to understand better bedbugs and how to help their clients with eradication and education in the safest manner possible. The study also aimed to …

Entomology Outreach Presentations To Four Audiences, Michael Goldman
Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects
I proposed that my master’s Project would be outreach on Entomology at four levels: School aged children, laymen, non-entomologists in a technical field, and entomologists. The idea here is basically how to talk about entomology to varying levels of expertise, from first graders to experts in both entomology and occupational health and safety. Presentations were given to audiences at each of the four levels. The specific topics varied for each audience. The determination was made by the inviting audience in the cases of school aged children and adult laymen and by me in the cases of Occupational Safety and Health …
A Review Of The Wheat Stem Sawfly, Cephus Cinctus Norton (Hymenoptera: Cephidae), Bethany Thomas
A Review Of The Wheat Stem Sawfly, Cephus Cinctus Norton (Hymenoptera: Cephidae), Bethany Thomas
Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects
The wheat stem sawfly, Cephus cinctus Norton (Hymenoptera: Cephidae) is a native stem-mining insect pest of significant economic importance within the Northern Great Plains of the United States and the prairie provinces of Canada (Criddle, 1923). Cephus cinctus adult females specifically attack large-stemmed grasses, originally feral and later adapted to cultivated grasses, with dryland wheat, Triticum aestivum L. (Poaceae), as the most notable host (Morrill & Kushnak, 1996). As all but two weeks of the sawfly’s lifecycle is contained within a host-grass, understanding the ecological history, biological interactions, and economic impacts between C. cinctus and T. aestivum is …
Comparison Of Insecticide And Trap Crop Management Practices For The Control Of Acalymma Vittatum (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) In Cucumbers, Keely Wright
Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects
The striped cucumber beetle (Acalymma vittatum (F.)) is a specialist herbivore pest, feeding on plants in the Cucurbitaceae family across North America. Adult beetles migrate into cucurbit fields from the field edges to feed on the emerged plant parts. Control methods can include insecticides, cultural practices, and some biological control species, or a combination of multiple methods, each having their own advantages and disadvantages. A push-pull trap crop management system using blue hubbard squash (Cucurbita maxima Duchesne) and nasturtiums was established and compared to a lambda-cyhalothrin (Matador 120EC) foliar insecticide control approach in a cucumber crop. Lambda-cyhalothrin, applied …

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
Plant growth and resilience require balancing an inherently oxidative metabolism with powerful antioxidant systems that help maintain homeostasis. When the environment changes, reactive oxygen species are potent indicators of that change, allowing adaptation through re-balancing metabolism and antioxidant systems. A large body of evidence supports the use of exogenously applied antioxidants to improve both plant growth and their resilience to stress. Notably, some phenotypic effects are similar upon the application of chemically diverse antioxidants, while others are distinct. In this review, we analyze research from antioxidant treatment experiments and highlight the similarities in their practical applications and their effects on …

Milk Thistle Supplementation And Exercise To Influence Bilirubin And Body Weight Outcomes, Don Arthur Matutina
Milk Thistle Supplementation And Exercise To Influence Bilirubin And Body Weight Outcomes, Don Arthur Matutina
Theses and Dissertations--Nutrition and Food Systems
Background: Traditional obesity treatment is ineffective as rates are still on the rise, thus necessitating novel treatments. Plasma bilirubin, once thought as only a clinical marker of liver disease, is now considered an important hormone, correlated with better outcomes within certain metabolic disease states such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. This is largely due to bilirubin’s role in promoting fatty acid oxidation via its interaction with PPARα and its antioxidant capacities to reduce lipid peroxidation. Possible methods of mildly increasing plasma bilirubin may provide a novel obesity treatment. Objective: To evaluate if Silmarin supplementation via milk thistle, exercise, or a …

Dogs have a special place in human history as the first domesticated species and play important roles in many cultures around the world. However, their role in scientific studies has been relatively recent. With a few notable exceptions (e.g., Darwin, Pavlov, Scott, and Fuller), domestic dogs were not commonly the subject of rigorous scientific investigation of behavior until the late 1990s. Although the number of canine science studies has increased dramatically over the last 20 years, most research groups are limited in the inferences they can draw because of the relatively small sample sizes used, along with the exceptional diversity …
Harlem's Superhero: Social Interaction, Heterogeneity Of Thought, And The Superhero Mission In Marvel's Luke Cage, Justin Martin
Harlem's Superhero: Social Interaction, Heterogeneity Of Thought, And The Superhero Mission In Marvel's Luke Cage, Justin Martin
Psychology Faculty Scholarship
The essay extends previous Luke Cage scholarship by analyzing him through a discipline rarely utilized in superhero scholarship: developmental psychology. Using the Luke Cage television series, the author centers Luke Cage's relationship to Harlem. In doing so, the author explores how the relationship can elucidate both the conceptual foundations of morally-relevant decision-making and the ways these concepts may be applied in varied and complex social interactions -- features of social life relevant to everyday persons as well as superheroes working within a fictionalized neighborhood.
Trash Island: Opportunities Of Conservation, Recreation And Education Of Spoil Islands In South West Florida, Olivia Murillo
Trash Island: Opportunities Of Conservation, Recreation And Education Of Spoil Islands In South West Florida, Olivia Murillo
Theses & ETDs
The phrase ‘Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle’ is one of the earliest introductions to environmentalism many of us are familiar with. Along with this phrase, we are made aware of large amounts of pollution such as plastics on land and our oceans. But the phrase is usually not extended to spaces. Have you ever considered reusing, reducing, or recycling a space? This phrase has been the approach to mitigating relatively new manmade spaces that can be found on many coasts: spoil mounds, a form of human byproduct that is often overlooked. Here in South West Florida, one of our waste spaces …
Toward A Non-Account Of Gender Identity, Marina Sidlow
Toward A Non-Account Of Gender Identity, Marina Sidlow
Theses & ETDs
Most accounts of gender fail to be sufficiently trans-inclusive. Thalia Mae Bettcher’s account of gender as sincere self-identification is the only account of gender that can fully account for trans identities and experiences. Bettcher’s account can be considered a non-account of gender because it does not require any similarity in members of a gender-identity group besides their sincere avowal. In doing so, the account allows the concept of gender to be open to the interpretation of the individual. Sincere self-identification ought to be implemented in mainstream society by acknowledging ethical first-person authority over gender, or allowing speakers to have social …

Stress Response In Relation To Gender, Adverse Experiences, And Personality, Alyssa Kramer
Stress Response In Relation To Gender, Adverse Experiences, And Personality, Alyssa Kramer
Theses & ETDs
Behavioral responses to stress have typically been characterized as “fighting” or “fleeing.” However, humans may show a more complex set of behavioral strategies that are influenced by factors such as gender socialization, trauma, and personality. Fawning has recently been introduced as a response to stress that involves conflict avoidance. Although this term has been used colloquially, there is little empirical research that explores the fawn response and how factors such as gender, trauma, and personality may be involved in this stress response. The purpose of this study is to conduct an initial exploration on these factors. Sixty-nine undergraduate participants were …

Investigating Ishikwaella Symbiont Transcriptome Analysis Concerning The Immune System Of Kudzu Bugs, Erika Calle
Theses & ETDs
This thesis investigated the roles of host-gut symbiotic interactions of Candidatus Ishikawella capsulate and Kudzu bugs in the Southeastern United States. Exploring the host-microbe interactions can provide insight into understanding the overall health of species. While the microbes get a habitat and nourishment from the host, these microbes, in turn, help the host by regulating various host physiological functions, including dietary digestion, and imparting protective immunity against pathogens (Khan et al.,2019). Megacopta cribraria or the Kudzu bug is an invasive species of stink bug from the Kyushu region of Japan that invaded the state of Georgia in 2009 (Eger et …

Parkinson’S Disease And The Microbiome: Determining A Functional Link Between Microbiota Composition And Pd Pathogenesis, Emily Visiko
Theses & ETDs
Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is one of the most common neurodegenerative diseases, however, there has been difficulty in determining the pathogenesis of PD. Recent evidence has supported the hypothesis that the gut microbiota may play a causal role in PD development. This thesis presents findings from human-based and animal-based models of PD that revealed differences in the abundances of PD patients’ gut microbiota when compared to those of healthy controls. Additionally, this review discusses proposed mechanisms and pathways involved in PD pathogenesis, specifically focusing on interactions involving the gut microbiota. The mechanisms and pathways discussed include the propagation and spread of …
