Botanical Assessment Of Remnant Floodplain Habitats Along Plaster Creek, Kent County, Michigan: Assessing Changes Since The 1890s, Haley R. Weesies, Garrett Crow, David Warners Jan 2023

Botanical Assessment Of Remnant Floodplain Habitats Along Plaster Creek, Kent County, Michigan: Assessing Changes Since The 1890s, Haley R. Weesies, Garrett Crow, David Warners

Faculty and Professional Research

Plaster Creek, a tributary of the Grand River, drains a 58-square mile watershed in Kent County, Michigan. Its headwaters originate in the agriculturally dominated southwestern portion of the county, and then it meanders through residential, commercial, and urban areas of Kentwood and Grand Rapids before it empties into the Grand River about one mile south of downtown Grand Rapids. Much of Plaster Creek’s original floodplain, like the rest of its watershed, has been drastically altered and degraded over time due to the development of residential neighborhoods, commercial properties, agriculture, and industrial zones. Floodplains house unique assemblages of Michigan’s native biodiversity …

Investigating The Kshb V246s Mutation In The Kshab Protein Complex Found In Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, Malika Cruickshank Jan 2023

Investigating The Kshb V246s Mutation In The Kshab Protein Complex Found In Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, Malika Cruickshank

Undergraduate Review

This research centered on studying the interactions between the KshA and KshB subunits of the 3-ketosteroid-9α hydroxylase (KshAB) protein complex found in Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis). Interactions between the two protein subunits were computationally explored using the protein docking program ClusPro and a location in the KshB subunit at Val 246 was found to be in proximity with nearby amino acids in the KshA subunit. This was determined to be a possible location for docking the protein complex. Val 246 of KshB was mutated into a serine residue to explore changes in the electron transfer pathway upon disruption of this …

How Can Consuming A Plant-Based Diet Reduce The Risk Of Cardiovascular Disease In Postmenopausal Women?, Rebecca L. Stack Jan 2023

How Can Consuming A Plant-Based Diet Reduce The Risk Of Cardiovascular Disease In Postmenopausal Women?, Rebecca L. Stack

Undergraduate Review

Despite the fact that women suffer higher rates of cardiovascular events after menopause, there exists a significant underrepresentation of women—especially postmenopausal women—in cardiovascular clinical trials to date. Fortunately, current evidence reveals that cardiovascular events in the general population are largely preventable through modifiable lifestyle factors, with dietary intervention being one of the most important (Amiri et al., 2022). As the impact of whole-diet interventions on cardiovascular risk factors is further explored, it has been determined that a plant-based dietary pattern may favorably influence the prevention of cardiovascular events in postmenopausal women (Barańska et al., 2021). Evidence also reveals that certain …

Enhancement Of Muscle Shortening Torque Preloaded With Muscle Lengthening Is Joint-Specific, Marzouq K. Almutairi, Gary R. Hunter, Donald H. Lein, Sojung Kim, David R. Bryan, Mario Inacio, Christopher P. Hurt, William Reed, Harshvardhan Singh

APC Fund

Our cross-sectional study aimed to investigate joint specificity of concentric muscle torque enhancement after a maximum eccentric contraction for the knee versus ankle joints across two different movement velocities (120°/s and 180°/s). After a familiarization session, 22 healthy young adults randomly performed concentric (CONC) and maximum eccentric preloaded concentric (EccCONC) muscle strength tests of the knee extensors and ankle plantar flexors of the non-dominant leg on an isokinetic strength testing device. We calculated the ratio between EccCONC and CONC (EccCONC/CONC) for all the conditions as the marker of concentric muscle torque enhancement. Separate two-way (joints x velocity) within repeated measures …

Exploration Of Electron Dynamics In A Strong Field By Time Dependent Configuration Interaction With A Complex Absorbing Potential, Paul Hoerner Jan 2023

Exploration Of Electron Dynamics In A Strong Field By Time Dependent Configuration Interaction With A Complex Absorbing Potential, Paul Hoerner

Wayne State University Dissertations

Strong field electron dynamics are a quickly developing field of study in physical chemistry. In order to better understand experimental observations, there is a need for computational tools to simulate electron dynamics in a strong field. Due to the nature of strong electric fields, this requires the solving of the time dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE). Various methods have been used to solve the TDSE in a strong field. In order to look at molecular systems while accurately treating the underlying physics, a method that balances computational affordability with theoretical rigor is necessary. The chosen method that matches these criteria is …

“I Don’T Want To Cook”: Reconfiguring The Domestic Space In Nineteenth-Century American Literature, Rida Leonard Jan 2023

“I Don’T Want To Cook”: Reconfiguring The Domestic Space In Nineteenth-Century American Literature, Rida Leonard

CGU Theses & Dissertations

In the scholarship that considers ways in which the concept of domesticity features in the lives of black and white women in history, there is less discussion of how these women’s unique challenges led them to alter the traditional domestic space. This dissertation first assesses a range of nineteenth-century American newspapers to understand the prevalent social milieu and then closely analyzes select literary texts of the time, to argue that the distinct racial circumstances that framed black and white women’s struggles enabled them to reform the domestic space as needed. Analysis of the nineteenth century press reveals that while white …

Sedative Hypnotic Medications: Effect On Negative Cognition And Insomnia, Austin L. Larsen

Theses and Graduate Projects

The pursuit of healthy sleep in the United States often involves the use of prescription medications that were never intended for long-term treatment of insomnia. The use of medication to address sleep difficulty has multiple sources, including the medical system and a consumer driven economy within the United States. Behavioral interventions for insomnia have been increasing in availability and effectiveness over time, but medication use continues to be a first-line treatment for sleep problems. The focus of the current paper is the exploration of relationships between sedative use, sleep difficulties, and negative cognition in a sample of 104 adult participants …

Premise of the study

Reproductive fitness in plants is often determined by the quantity and quality of pollen transferred by pollinators. However, many fitness studies measure only female fitness, or rely on proxies for male fitness. Here we assess how five bee taxa affect male fitness in a prairie plant by quantifying pollen removal, visitation, and siring success using paternity assignments and a unique experimental approach.

Methods

In Echinacea angustifolia, we measured per-visit pollen removal for each pollinator taxa and estimated the number of pollen grains needed for successful ovule fertilization. Additionally, we directly measured pollinator influence on siring …

Construct An Anaerobic Digester To Treat West Virginia University’S Food Waste, Kevin Omer Jan 2023

Construct An Anaerobic Digester To Treat West Virginia University’S Food Waste, Kevin Omer

Bridge Initiative for Science and Technology Policy, Leadership, and Communications

West Virginia University (WVU) should construct an anaerobic digester to dispose of the approximately 175 tons of food waste generated each year. Today, this waste is transported to a landfill 50 miles away, impacting the environment in a way that is not consistent with WVU’s sustainability policy. A digester, which uses bacteria to turn food waste into biogas, can reduce WVU’s greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental impacts. In addition, faculty can use the digester to conduct research and teach sustainable practices that can be used throughout the state once students graduate. Further, prospective students often review a university’s sustainability …

Incentivize Direct Air Capture, Bioenergy With Carbon Capture, And Carbon Storage While Assessing Opportunities And Challenges To Local Communities, Deborah D. Stine Jan 2023

Incentivize Direct Air Capture, Bioenergy With Carbon Capture, And Carbon Storage While Assessing Opportunities And Challenges To Local Communities, Deborah D. Stine

Bridge Initiative for Science and Technology Policy, Leadership, and Communications

West Virginia is an ideal location for direct air capture (DAC; left picture) and bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS; right picture) – two ways to remove the carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) already in the atmosphere. Both DAC and BECCS require a geological location that can store any CO 2 that is not turned into products. Luckily, the same geology that supports West Virginia’s fossil fuel industry, including former oil and gas reservoirs, unmineable coal seams, and saline formations, can potentially be used to store CO 2 and provide job opportunities for those in former coal communities. BECCS …

Synthesis Of Putative Microcystin-Lr Degradation Products And Full Macrocyclic Cyanopeptide, Mahesh Kumar Yadab Jan 2023

Synthesis Of Putative Microcystin-Lr Degradation Products And Full Macrocyclic Cyanopeptide, Mahesh Kumar Yadab

Wayne State University Dissertations

This thesis primarily focuses on synthesizing fragments of microcystin-LR, which is a natural product, with the aim of establishing them as analytical standards for investigating the biodegradation pathways of MC-LR. Despite of the substantial interest in synthesizing, isolating, and degrading Microcystins over the past few decades, the availability of high-purity microcystin standards at known concentration for quantitative analysis of using LC-MS/MS remains limited. The synthesis of the proposed MC-LR fragments employs the Fmoc/t-Bu protecting group strategy to prevent isomerization. Additionally, novel methods for the total synthesis of N-Boc-Adda are explored, incorporating atom-economic approaches, cross-metathesis, and oxidative boron Heck reactions. The …
