Improving Knowledge and Awareness for Providers and Staff on Intimate Partner Violence
Blessie Clontz
Abstract Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a national and global health issue where women and men have experienced contact sexual violence, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner. A health-care provider is likely to be the first professional contact for survivors of IPV or sexual assault. The purpose of this quality improvement (QI initiative was to use a mixed study design to examine the impact of an educational session on provider and staff knowledge and awareness of intimate partner violence at a small primary care …

Consumer Protection In Islamic Jurisprudence: The Case Of Genetically Modified Food, Gihad Omran Elbashir
Consumer Protection In Islamic Jurisprudence: The Case Of Genetically Modified Food, Gihad Omran Elbashir
Journal of Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal for Humanities and Educational Sciences
The goal of this research is to examine how Islamic jurisprudence can provide answers to questions about genetically modified foods by combining Islamic Fiqh and scientific knowledge to protect consumers from their harmful effects. The research problem arises from the fact that consumers, in an Islamic state and elsewhere, face similar issues that must be addressed by governments and individuals. Islam, as a religion, provides a comprehensive framework for protecting the rights of consumers. Islamic jurisprudence offers guidelines for creating an environment where consumers› interests are optimally protected. These guidelines are based on the divine principles established by Allah, who …

Salts of hexacyanoferrate II/III anions have been widely used as redox couple probe molecules to determine the characteristics of electrode surfaces. Examples include the assessment of electrocatalysts for energy applications and electrocatalysts for the detection of biological or chemical species, as well as the determination of electrochemically active surface areas. An examination of the electrochemical literature, based largely on cyclic voltammetric investigations, reveals a wide range of peak separation and/or heterogeneous electron transfer rate constants, classified sometimes as inner or outer sphere electron transfer processes. Originally developed for the mechanistic interpretation of inorganic transition metal compounds in solution, this terminology …

Mid-infrared spectroscopy (MIR), near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR), and Raman spectroscopy are all well-established analytical techniques in biomedical applications. Since they provide complementary chemical information, we aimed to determine whether combining them amplifies their strengths and mitigates their weaknesses. This study investigates the feasibility of the fusion of MIR, NIR, and Raman spectroscopic data for characterising articular cartilage integrity. Osteochondral specimens from bovine patellae were subjected to mechanical and enzymatic damage, and then MIR, NIR, and Raman data were acquired from the damaged and control specimens. We assessed the capacity of individual spectroscopic methods to classify the samples into damage or control …

MicroRNAs are small ~22 nucleotide RNA sequences that are guided to the 3’ untranslated region (UTR) of protein-coding target mRNA sequences. One particular microRNA, miR155, plays a remarkable role in the immune system, where it is essential for mounting appropriate immune responses. However, its dysregulation has been identified in multiple inflammatory disorders such as Multiple Sclerosis (MS), arthritis, psoriasis and colitis. More specifically, miR-155 has been found to be elevated in the serum and brain lesions of MS patients. Importantly, therapeutic inhibition of miR-155 can inhibit progression of the MS disease model. One of us has identified that macrophages are …
Modeling Self-Diffusiophoretic Janus Particles In Fluid, Kausik Das
Modeling Self-Diffusiophoretic Janus Particles In Fluid, Kausik Das
HMC Senior Theses
We explore spherical Janus particles in which a chemical reaction occurs on one face, depleting a substrate in the suspending fluid, while no reaction occurs on the other face. The steady state concentration field is governed by Laplace’s equation with mixed boundary conditions. We use the collocation method to obtain numerical solutions to the equation in spherical coordinates. The asymmetry of the reaction gives rise to a slip velocity that causes the particle to move spontaneously in the fluid through a process known as self-diffusiophoresis. Using the Lorentz reciprocal theorem, we obtain the swimming velocity of the particle. We extend …
A Visual Tour Of Dynamical Systems On Color Space, Jonathan Maltsman
A Visual Tour Of Dynamical Systems On Color Space, Jonathan Maltsman
HMC Senior Theses
We can think of a pixel as a particle in three dimensional space, where its x, y and z coordinates correspond to its level of red, green, and blue, respectively. Just as a particle’s motion is guided by physical rules like gravity, we can construct rules to guide a pixel’s motion through color space. We can develop striking visuals by applying these rules, called dynamical systems, onto images using animation engines. This project explores a number of these systems while exposing the underlying algebraic structure of color space. We also build and demonstrate a Visual DJ circuit board for …

Predicting Habitat Suitability Of Migratory Sharks Using Machine Learning Methods, Daniel Daye
Predicting Habitat Suitability Of Migratory Sharks Using Machine Learning Methods, Daniel Daye
Open Access Master's Theses
Whale shark (Rhincodon typus) populations have declined significantly over the last century due to anthropogenic mortality. Concerns about the sustainability of known populations and their interactions with humans have generated a high level of interest in the movement and migration patterns of the ocean's largest fish. Despite their seasonal aggregation at locations across the globe, little is known about whale shark movements and habitat use away from these locations. We tracked 26 whale sharks from the male-dominated aggregation near Isla Mujeres, Mexico using SPOT (Smart Position and Temperature) tags. One mature female – Rio Lady – generated location …

Animal Instinct: Radical Black Feminism And The Virtue Of The Demonic, Amity S. Nathaniel
Theses and Dissertations
The impossible strive towards “human” has dominated much of Black feminist studies, but there are scholars such as Sylvia Wynter, Zakiyyah Iman Jackson, Alex Weheliye, and Octavia Butler who've re-configured the concept of humanity in their work by embracing different species and technologies that could provide liberation for Black women. My dissertation explores these new spaces, using Wynter’s “demonic ground” theory as a backbone, to conceptualize Black post-humanism, animality, and the embracing of the “demonic” as radical tools of empowerment. My dissertation aims to establish the consistent and perpetual violence that Black women—from past to present—have endured by living on …
Regulation Of P53 By Trpm6 And Trpm7, Thomas Whitbread
Regulation Of P53 By Trpm6 And Trpm7, Thomas Whitbread
Theses and Dissertations
TRPM6 and TRPM7 are two divalent metal cation channels that also possess a serine/threonine kinase domain. They both play critical roles in cellular and organismal metal homeostasis, and are necessary for proper embryonic development and human health. They may function independently in homomeric units, or act together as heterotetramers that display unique characteristics compared to the homomeric channels. These channel-kinases have increasingly been linked to cancer, displaying altered expression levels in a variety of human cancers and contributing to disease progression. Prior work has shown that TRPM6 and TRPM7 can participate in cancer-related signaling pathways. Here, the potential for TRPM6 …

Controlled Release Of Flurbiprofen From 3d-Printed And Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Processed Methacrylate-Based Polymer, Truc T. Ngo, Jae D. Kim
School of Engineering: Faculty Scholarship
The ability to engineer and predict drug release behavior during treatment is critical to the design and implementation of effective drug delivery systems. In this study, a drug delivery system consisting of a methacrylate-based polymer and flurbiprofen was studied, and its release profile in a controlled phosphate-buffered saline solution was characterized. The polymer, which was 3D printed and processed in supercritical carbon dioxide under different temperature and pressure settings, showed sustained drug release over a prolonged period. A computer algorithm was used to determine the drug release time duration before reaching steady state and the maximum drug release at steady …

Bio-Inspired Sutures: Simulating The Role Of Suture Placement In The Mechanical Response Of Interlocking Structures, Melissa M. Gibbons, Diana A. Chen
School of Engineering: Faculty Scholarship
The hardest anatomical components of many animals are connected at thin seams known as sutures, which allow for growth and compliance required for respiration and movement and serve as a defense mechanism by absorbing energy during impacts. We take a bio-inspired approach and parameterize suture geometries to utilize geometric connections, rather than new engineering materials, to absorb high-impact loads. This study builds upon our work that investigated the effects of the dovetail suture contact angle, tangent length, and tab radius on the stiffness and toughness of an archway structure using finite element analysis. We explore how increasing the archway segmentation …

A New Method For Controlling Fractional Linear Systems, Subramanian V. Shastri, Kumpati S. Narendra, Lihao Zheng
School of Engineering: Faculty Scholarship
The study of fractional linear time-invariant (LTI) systems has been an area of active research over the past thirty years. Results indicate that such systems are becoming important in the representation of certain types of dynamical behavior in biology and engineering. Several methods have been developed for the representation, identification, and control of fractional LTI systems. The primary purpose of this paper is to introduce a new approach to their control. Its principal contribution is the transformation of a fractional LTI system into one without fractional terms (standard LTI system) using feedback and feedforward compensation. While the former may be …

Introduction
Chronic pain, a persistent or recurrent pain lasting more than 3 months, is a widespread problem among military women due to combat-related injuries and post-deployment stressors. Risk factors associated with chronic pain include gender, mental health, post-traumatic stress disorder, and prior physical or military sexual trauma. The most common prevalence of chronic pain is musculoskeletal (e.g., low back and neck), migraine, osteoarthritis, and fibromyalgia. Following deployment, 25% of military women are at risk for chronic pain. Military women are prescribed opioids for pain at a higher rate than men and are at risk for prescription opioid addiction. The unique …

Student-Athletes’ Resilience At Religious And Secular Higher Education Institutions, Thayer Trenhaile
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine whether there was a statistically significant (p < 0.05) difference in student-athletes’ resilience by whether they attended religious or secular higher education institutions. The study utilized data from the 2018 Multi-Institutional Study of Leadership (MSL) survey, which was completed by 8,163 student-athletes at 70 different institutions. The researcher used a confirmatory factor analysis to create the resilience and pre-college factors and an ordinary least squares regression to examine whether there are differences in students’ resilience controlling for pre-college demographics and other collegiate variables. The results of the regression analysis suggested that student-athletes who attended religious institutions have significantly (p < 0.05) lower resilience compared to student-athletes who attended secular institutions. A discussion, recommendations for practice, and recommendations for research are included.

Journal Articles: Pathology and Microbiology
Clostridium novyi has demonstrated selective efficacy against solid tumors largely due to the microenvironment contained within dense tumor cores. The core of a solid tumor is typically hypoxic, acidic, and necrotic-impeding the penetration of current therapeutics. C. novyi is attracted to the tumor microenvironment and once there, can both lyse and proliferate while simultaneously re-activating the suppressed immune system. C. novyi systemic toxicity is easily mitigated by knocking out the phage DNA plasmid encoded alpha toxin resulting in C. novyi-NT; but, after intravenous injection spores are quickly cleared by phagocytosis before accomplishing significant tumor localization. C. novyi-NT could be designed …

Review Of The International Play Policies And Their Contribution To Supporting A Child's Right To Play, Fiona Armstrong, David Gaul
Review Of The International Play Policies And Their Contribution To Supporting A Child's Right To Play, Fiona Armstrong, David Gaul
Articles
Play is recognised as a fundamental children's right protected by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Despite legal and constitutional requirements for ensuring children's right to play, there are few international policies dedicated to play. This paper seeks to use a critical discourse analysis lens to compare the current international policies dedicated to play and identify examples of good practice and perceived barriers to the successful development and implementation of play policies.
