Extension Publications

The box tree moth (BTM), Cydalima perspectalis (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), is an invasive pest of boxwood (Buxus spp.) causing severe damage to these popular ornamental plants. These plants are popular for their low maintenance, deer resistance, and evergreen foliage. It is a shrub common to almost all landscape environments in the United States. The box tree moth is native to East Asia. It was discovered in Europe in 2007, and since then it has spread rapidly across the continent. In 2018, box tree moth was first detected in North America in Ontario, Canada and in July 2021, the U.S. Department …

Objectives We estimate adult age distributions from Unar 1 and Unar 2, two late Umm an-Nar (2400-2100 BCE) tombs in the modern-day Emirate of Ras al-Khaimah, United Arab Emirates. These collective tombseach contained hundreds of skeletons in commingled, fragmented, and variably cremated states. Previous studies placed the vast majority of this mortuary community in a generalized “adult” category, as have most analyses of similar tombs from this period. We sought to test how adult age estimation methods compare in identifying young, middle, and old age individuals in commingled assemblages.

Materials and Methods We employed Transition Analysis 3 (TA3) and traditional …

Data To Accompany: How Does Rapid Body Color Change Affect The Conspicuity Of Lizards To Their Predators And Conspecifics?, Lindsey Swierk, Andrés Rojo

Biological Sciences Faculty Scholarship

Predator-prey interactions drive the evolution of prey visual camouflage, but prey species also often require salience to their conspecifics for social signaling purposes. Whether rapid body color change can help to dynamically balance conspecific visibility and predator concealment, in the eyes of each group’s respective visual systems, remains poorly understood. We tested this question using water anoles (Anolis aquaticus), a small lizard that uses rapid dark-to-light body color change to visually camouflage itself from its avian predators across diverse microhabitats. We used digital image analysis and visual modeling to assess the effectiveness of color-matching camouflage in A. aquaticus …

Data To Accompany "Altered Heat-Avoidance Behavior Following Damage To The Extended Architecture Of Mexican Jumping Bean Moth Larvae (Cydia Saltitans)", Anna Purtell, Lindsey Swierk

Biological Sciences Faculty Scholarship

In response to physical damage, organisms must balance physical recovery with adaptive responses to other environmental stressors. Understanding how damage and repair influence adaptive responses to high environmental temperatures is of particular interest in light of global climate change. We investigate the impact of damage and subsequent repair on heat-avoidance behaviors in Cydia saltitans larvae inhabiting host seeds (Sebastiana pavoniana) as protective structures (together colloquially known as “Mexican jumping beans”). These larvae perform temperature-dependent “jumping” or “rolling” behaviors to escape extreme heat, which are crucial for larval survival in their native arid and hot subtropical dry forests. Due …

Renewing A Nation: The Impact Of The African Diaspora On The African American Family, Culture And The Black Church, Lolita R. Gilmore-Randall

Doctor of Ministry

Despite the notion the past can never be removed, disassembled or altered, variant versions of African American history continue to serve as a fluid document in time without accountability, acknowledgement, or consciousness of the liabilities associated with the African diaspora. Studies show an estimated 12.5 million African men, women, and children were forcibly transported as part of the transatlantic slave trade, an egregious act that remains impactful to this day. African Americans represent 12% of the American population, but constitute 2.3 million, or 34%, of the total 6.8 million in correctional facilities. Though African American children make up 14% of …

Dry Spells And Global Crop Production: A Multi-Stressor And Multi-Timescale Analysis, Uchechukwu Jarrett, Steve Miller, Hamid Mohtadi

Department of Economics: Faculty Publications

More frequent and punctuated severe events such as dry spells are among the more salient manifestations of climate change. Because dry spells often co-occur with drought and heat waves, understanding the effects of dry spells and heat waves requires a multi-timescale and multi-stressor perspective. Using a global panel of daily precipitation and temperature from 1979 to 2016, we provide evidence that 4-5 week dry spells that occur during the hottest part of the year depress growth in crop production. The effects of these extreme events are modified by existing drought, aridity, and by heat waves. After accounting for productivity and …
