Technical Study And Conservation Treatment Of A Painted Wooden Figure, Attributed As An 18th-Century American Sternboard, Sutton Hastman
Art Conservation Master's Projects
This study focuses on the investigation of an object owned by the Memorial Art Gallery (MAG) that was cataloged as an 18th -century American sternboard. The MAG shared concerns regarding the object’s provenance and whether the object was correctly identified. Technical analysis, including multimodal photography, x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX) and wood identification, was conducted to inform the museum on the fabrication of the object and on its material components. The information collected was examined alongside historical research regarding the authenticity of the provenance, aiming to better understand the nature of the …

Training Robot Swarms For Adaptive Foraging In Environments With Obstacles, Pigar Biteng, Tameem Uz Zaman, Qi Lu
Computer Science Faculty Publications
In this work, we train adaptive and efficient foraging strategies for robot swarms in a large, unmapped search space with multiple randomly distributed box obstacles using the penalty-reward based NeuroEvolution of Augmented Topologies (NEAT), P-NeatFA. This model enables efficient multi-robot foraging behavior and obstacle avoidance by rewarding effective actions and penalizing inefficient ones, thereby minimizing redundant exploration and outperforming traditional stochastic foraging algorithms. We optimize foraging strategies and search patterns in robot swarms by training models that maximize cumulative rewards in three types of resource distribution environments. The evaluation focuses on the number of resources collected within a fixed time …

Evolving Adaptive Foraging Robot Swarms With Neat In Environments With Obstacles, Tameem Uz Zaman, Pigar Biteng, Qi Lu
Computer Science Faculty Publications
We apply NeuroEvolution of Augmented Topologies (NEAT) to evolve adaptive and efficient swarm foraging behaviors in unknown environments with randomly placed obstacles. By rewarding effective actions and penalizing inefficient ones using the proposed strategy P-NeatFA, the training generates efficient foraging and obstacle avoidance strategies, reducing redundancy and outperforming traditional stochastic foraging algorithms. Optimization is guided by cumulative reward-based fitness, evaluated through simulations involving three types of distributed resources. Foraging performance is assessed in terms of resource retrieval rates. We compare the performance of our proposed P-NeatFA with that of CPFA and NeatFA. Experimental results show that P-NeatFA significantly outperforms the …
Large Scale Deletion And Rebalancing Within The K1c Kafirin Family In Sorghum, Tyler W. Ferris
Large Scale Deletion And Rebalancing Within The K1c Kafirin Family In Sorghum, Tyler W. Ferris
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Sorghum bicolor (L.) Monech (sorghum) is cultivated as food for humans and livestock and is valued for its low input requirements. However, sorghum grain protein is deficient in the essential amino acid lysine and has poor protein digestibility because of the abundance of proline-rich kafirins that constitute >70% of proteins that form low-digestibility protein bodies. To reduce kafirin expression in the endosperm, and elicit wholesale proteome rebalancing to increase non-kafirin proteins, a single-guide RNA (sgRNA) Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR/Cas9) construct was previously used to target members of the highly-repetitive alpha-kafirin family, k1C in RTx430 sorghum. The …

Plant Nutrient Interactions In High-Yielding Soybean Environments, Victoria Inklman
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Plant nutrient demands and limitations are usually studied individually by nutrient. Here, we investigated how nitrogen (N) limitation in high-yielding soybean environments affects the uptake, removal, and residual of other plant macro- and micronutrients. The objective of this study was to quantify the uptake, removal, and residual levels of soybean macro- and micronutrients under N-limited conditions and to identify nutrient priorities for high-yielding soybean systems. Aboveground plant samples at physiological maturity were collected in 19 high-yielding soybean fields with N limitation across the state of Nebraska. Reference plots with ample N supply were included within each field to compare macro- …

Improving Glycemic Control Mechanisms By Electrical Muscle Stimulation, Jehu Narh Apaflo
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Introduction: Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) has emerged as a promising intervention for improving metabolic health in sedentary individuals with overweight or obesity. Its capacity to induce muscle contraction without voluntary movement presents a viable alternative to traditional exercise, especially in mobility-limited populations. NMES may serve as a non-invasive alternative to traditional exercise, especially in high-risk populations who face elevated type 2 diabetes incidence linked to hyperglycemia, obesity, and inactivity. This study investigated the impact of NMES on glycemic control and metabolic health in a sedentary, predominantly Hispanic, overweight or obese population. Methods: This study examined the acute and long-term effects …
Restoring Balance: Choctaw Policy And The Environment In New Spain's Eighteenth-Century Frontier, Fior Daliso Garcia Lara
Restoring Balance: Choctaw Policy And The Environment In New Spain's Eighteenth-Century Frontier, Fior Daliso Garcia Lara
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
During the colonial period, Indigenous peoples in the Lower Mississippi Valley used their deep ecological knowledge to respond to imperial pressures. Eighteenth-century Louisiana was a contested borderland where Spain, France, and England vied for expansion through alliances, warfare, and trade with Native tribes. As European powers vied for control of the region, Native groups devised strategies to assert sovereignty over their territories and livelihoods. My dissertation examines the ecological history of the Choctaw and Spanish Louisiana from 1763 until the United States Indian Removal Act in the 1830s. It argues that imperial disputes over Indigenous lands compelled the Choctaw to …
Characterization Of Glyt1 Expression And Glycinergic Circuits, Laura Patricia Montes
Characterization Of Glyt1 Expression And Glycinergic Circuits, Laura Patricia Montes
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Glycine is one of the main inhibitory neurotransmitters in the central nervous system. Glycine is regulated by the glycine transporters 1 and 2 (GlyT1 and GlyT2, respectively) in the synaptic cleft. Both transporters participate in glycinergic inhibitory neurotransmission. Moreover, GlyT1 also participates in glutamatergic excitatory neurotransmission. GlyT2 is devoted to caudal regions of the brain and is used as a marker for glycinergic neurons. In contrast, GlyT1 is expressed across the brain in the rostrocaudal axis and is highly associated with GlyT1-positive glial cells. Data from our laboratory has identified GlyT1-positive neurons in the rodent brain. Therefore, we hypothesize that …

Depuration Of A Solitary Ascidian Depletes Transient Bacteria Without Altering Microbiome Alpha-Diversity, Brenna Hutchings, Susanna López-Legentil, Lauren M. Stefaniak, Marie L. Nydam, Patrick M. Erwin
Marine Science
Depuration, or the process of clearing impurities from the gut, is commonly applied to marine food products due to its efficacy in removing human pathogens from shellfish and edible ascidians. Recent studies also reported that depuration of filter-feeding animals helped reduce transient bacteria and identify resident symbionts in gut microbiome studies. Here, we examined the impact of depuration on bacteria in the branchial sac, gut, and hepatic gland of the solitary ascidian Pyura vittata. Replicates were kept in filtered seawater for 4 days prior to dissection (aquaria-depuration) and compared to samples that were immediately processed following collection (wild-no depuration) and …

Breaking Confirmatory Spells By Implementing Research- Integrated Cures, J. A.C. Vriezen
Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Differences in economic and social growth and academic equity, experi ences, and opportunities have left an achievement gap in STEM for underprivileged students. Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs) have attempted to answer these inequalities by leveling the playing field or by offering course-based research opportunities with minimal requirements for background knowledge. When we ask novel questions, more students get the experience of performing research, which lowers thresholds to pursue research and increases participation. Although the learning outcomes have been largely positive, there is a concern that many CUREs are still too scaffolded. In contrast, I propose to develop exploratory, hypothesis-driven …

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have gained significant attention due to their widespread distribution in the environment and potential adverse health effects. While ingestion, especially through contaminated drinking water, is considered the primary route of human exposure, recent research suggests that other pathways, such as inhalation and dermal absorption, also play a significant role. This review provides a concise overview of the toxicological impacts of both legacy and emerging PFASs, such as GenX and perfluoro butane sulfonic acid (PFBS), with a particular focus on their effects on the liver, kidneys, and immune and nervous systems, based on findings from recent …
"I'Ll Leave The Back Porch Light On:" An Exploration Of The Legitimization Of Same-Gender Male Couple Members Through Marriage And Parenthood For Those With Adverse Coming Out Experiences, Devin S. Simpkins
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Reczek and Bosley-Smith (2022) identified several reasons why queer adult children reported feeling compelled to maintain relationships with their rejecting parents, and the strategies that they utilized to do so. The construct of legitimization exists within a heteronormative context, contributing to the theory that adherence to cis-heteronormative relational ideals allows same-gender couples to have a greater chance of being accepted by the dominant culture (Chevrette & Eguchi, 2020). Unintentional or deliberate aligning with idealized images of traditional (i.e., cisgender and heterosexual) couples or families is a means by which same-gender couples may seek this acceptance.
The present study sought to …
Assessing Grafted Triploid Watermelon And Yellow Nutsedge Growth In Saline Agroecosystems, Joseph F. Bazzle
Assessing Grafted Triploid Watermelon And Yellow Nutsedge Growth In Saline Agroecosystems, Joseph F. Bazzle
All Theses
In an effort to better understand how saltwater intrusion events will impact watermelon growers a field trial was conducted to study how saline irrigation water will impact weed growth and seedless watermelon productivity at a joint Clemson University and USDA ARS facility. Weed management has always been a hurdle in vegetable crop production systems, requiring extensive labor even in a conventional setup. For organic growers, often the only economical approach is a combination of mechanical weed control techniques, including plastic mulches, tarps, and hand weeding. For watermelon growers, plastic mulch remains the most effective form of organic weed control available. …

3,5-Dihydroxy-4-Isopropylstilbene (Tapinarof) Is A Partial Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor Agonist In Fish, Conner A. Dicks
All Theses
The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) is a ligand activated transcription factor that is essential in regulating development, immune homeostasis, and drug and xenobiotic metabolism. Activation of the AHR by specific ligands results in its translocation to the nucleus where it induces a myriad of gene products, including cytochrome P450 (CYP) drug metabolizing enzymes (e.g., CYP1A1) and other components of the chemical defensome, as well as inflammatory control. Interestingly, the AHR can bind a wide variety of endogenous and xenobiotic ligands which are able to induce unique downstream effects dependent on cell type, inflammatory context, and ligand stability. The AHR is …

Using Convolutional Neural Networks To Estimate Missing Values In Univariate Time Series Data, Wasn Saad Al-Karadi
Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences
In this research, deep neural networks (CNNs) were used to estimate missing values in a univariate time series dataset and compared with DES/Holt and (SVR) estimation methods to determine their accuracy in handling missing values in the dataset. These missing values directly affect the process of building mathematical and statistical models, affecting the accuracy of the final results that enable us to make the right decisions in the future. The presence of missing values in the dataset is due to problems that occur during sampling, such as a malfunction in the measuring device, security attacks, or communication errors. The results …

Background: Blood-based biomarkers hold significant promise for the early detection and diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other dementias. Age-related changes in blood levels of AD biomarkers are well-documented but poorly understood. Epigenetic clocks are mathematical models based on DNA methylation patterns that reflect various aspects of the multidimensional aging process. We investigated the associations of epigenetic aging with five blood-based AD biomarkers in 2656 Hispanic/Latino adults (mean age 62.5 years; 65% females) from the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos. We used multivariable linear regression models to estimate the associations of acceleration in each of five epigenetic clocks with …
Local Adaptation In The Pinus Palustris Ground Layer, Jason Paul Joines
Local Adaptation In The Pinus Palustris Ground Layer, Jason Paul Joines
All Dissertations
Population survival or extirpation may be dependent on adaptation to local environmental conditions. I hypothesized that populations of species with large ranges would be locally adapted because of the variety of environments that different populations experience, that spatial patterns of local adaptation would correspond to patterns of endemism because processes driving local adaptation may also lead to speciation, and that the extent of local adaptation would be stronger in species with little gene flow among populations than in those with extensive gene flow because of the relative strength of selection necessary to overcome gene flow. I tested these hypotheses using …

Concussions and traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains a significant public health concern, especially in American football, where repeated head impacts pose long-term risks to athlete health. While current helmet testing standards rely heavily on the Hybrid III surrogate headform to evaluate protective performance, these surrogate models lack anatomical accuracy and exclude the presence of a brain component, limiting their ability to capture the true mechanics of concussion. To address this limitation, this research developed and validated a novel inverted impact testing method that allows the impact testing of a Hybrid III headform and a cadaveric specimen. Additionally, this fixture preserves …
Unsupervised Deep Learning For Video Restoration, Mary Damilola Aiyetigbo
Unsupervised Deep Learning For Video Restoration, Mary Damilola Aiyetigbo
All Dissertations
In today's digital era, visual data is vital across several domains such as medical diagnostics, scientific imaging, surveillance, and entertainment. However, video data often suffers from degradations like noise, blur, compression artifacts, and low resolution, which degrade quality and downstream usability. Video restoration aims to recover clean, high-fidelity video from such corrupted inputs. Unlike static images, video restoration must maintain temporal consistency across frames, making it a significantly more complex problem. While supervised deep learning methods have achieved state-of-the-art results, they typically require large datasets of paired noisy-clean video datasets that are scarce or impractical to obtain in real-world settings …
Trophic Roles And Climate-Driven Vulnerability For Benthic Invertebrates At Artificial Reefs In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Amanda Kirkland
Trophic Roles And Climate-Driven Vulnerability For Benthic Invertebrates At Artificial Reefs In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Amanda Kirkland
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Artificial reefs are deployed to enhance marine habitats and fisheries, yet their role in supporting secondary production and their vulnerability to climate stressors remain understudied. This dissertation investigates the trophic ecology and climate sensitivity of benthic invertebrates at artificial reefs in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Chapter 1 assessed reef food webs using stable isotopes from fishes, invertebrates, and primary producers across six reefs and two seasons. Mixing models showed that most fishes rely on benthic reef carbon, while suspension feeders consume plankton and sediment microphytobenthos. Isotopic niche analysis revealed functional diversity and seasonal shifts in δ¹³C and δ³⁴S, though …
Elucidating The Mechanisms Underlying A Functional Plant-Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Symbiosis Using Omics Approaches, Jasmine Gill
Elucidating The Mechanisms Underlying A Functional Plant-Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Symbiosis Using Omics Approaches, Jasmine Gill
All Dissertations
Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are obligate biotrophs forming symbiotic association with plants. The plant-AMF symbiosis has gained much attention due to its ability to improve plant nutrient uptake, especially phosphorus, which is often inadequately available to plants due to its limited mobility and complex formation in many soils. Phosphorus (P) is a crucial nutrient for plants, and most phosphate fertilizers are derived from phosphate rock, a finite natural resource. Thus, optimizing P uptake is vital for sustaining crop yields and addressing the needs of a growing global population. Plant-AMF symbioses are significant in this context, as AMF can acquire P …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Trees assist in stormwater retention basin functionality as efficient sources of water removal, and determining stand structure and leaf area of forests can be a measure of their effectiveness. The structure of forest stands on these basins managed for runoff mitigation has received little attention. We investigated the structure and species composition/diversity (tree and herbaceous) of planted, managed stands and naturally regenerated stands on stormwater retention basins managed by Harris County Flood Control District in Harris County, Texas. We determined stand structure variables (trees per hectare, basal area per hectare, quadratic mean diameter, relative density, average tree height, and percent …
