Speculative Immigration Policy, Matthew Boaz Jan 2023

Speculative Immigration Policy, Matthew Boaz

Scholarly Articles

This Article considers how speculative fiction was wielded by the Trump administration to implement destructive U.S. immigration policy. It analyzes the thematic elements from a particular apocalyptic novel, traces those themes through actual policy implemented by the president, and considers the harm effected by such policies. This Article proposes that the harmful outcomes are not due to the use of speculative fiction, but rather the failure to consider the speculative voices of those who have been historically marginalized within the United States. This Article argues that alternative speculative visions could serve as a platform for radical imagination about future U.S. …

Engaging The Aging Process: Unlock The Fountain Of Youth, Abeni El-Amin Ph.D. Jan 2023

Engaging The Aging Process: Unlock The Fountain Of Youth, Abeni El-Amin Ph.D.

Management Faculty Publications

Employment for aging is a significant aspect shaping the aging processes during formative years. Therefore, work opportunities combined and consequential impacts later in life merit special consideration. Given that population aging has become a global pattern with ensuing changes in labor markets far and wide, there is increased concern about the impacts of retirement around the globe and the macroeconomic advantages frequently connected with delaying retirement. It is fundamental for nations with aging populations to maintain profitability, given an aging workforce. Governments must make it simpler for individuals to maintain a significant presence in the workforce. This contribution focuses on …

Quantitative Study Of Aphid Natural Enemies In Central Oklahoma Canola Fields, Norman C. Elliott, Kristopher L. Giles, Kristen A. Baum, Sarah Elzay

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Winter canola (Brassica napus L.) is planted in late September through October in central Oklahoma and harvested in June. Three aphid species typically infest canola fields in central Oklahoma: cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae L.; green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer); and turnip aphid, Lipaphis pseudobrassicae (Davis). Predatory insects and spiders and hymenopteran parasitoids that prey on aphids are present in canola fields in central Oklahoma. We used a D-vac suction device to sample aphids and natural enemies in a total of 23 canola fields in central Oklahoma in early November and mid-March of three growing seasons. During the three …

Duryee, Bryant England, Carlos D. Hunter, Jack E. Mordeson, Evan Ryan, Eric C. Daubach, Debra J. Romberger, Geoffrey M. Thiele, Ted R. Mikuls

Journal Articles: Internal Medicine

Objective: Post-translational protein modifications with malondialdehyde-acetaldehyde (MAA) and citrulline (CIT) are implicated in the pathogenesis of rheumatoidarthritis (RA). Although precise mechanisms have not been elucidated, macrophage-fibroblast interactions have been proposed to play a central role in the development and progression of RA. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the downstream effects of macrophage released soluble mediators, following stimulation with fibrinogen (FIB) modified antigens, on human fibroblast-like synoviocytes (HFLS).

Methods: PMA-treated U-937 monocytes (Mϕ) and macrophage-differentiated peripheral blood mononuclear cells (MP) were stimulated with FIB, FIB-MAA, FIB-CIT, or FIB-MAA-CIT. HFLS-RA cells were stimulated directly with FIB antigens or with …

Approximate Equilibria For A T Cell And Treg Model, Bruno M. P. M. Oliveira, Isabel P. Figueiredo, Nigel J. Burroughs, Alberto A. Pinto Jan 2023

Approximate Equilibria For A T Cell And Treg Model, Bruno M. P. M. Oliveira, Isabel P. Figueiredo, Nigel J. Burroughs, Alberto A. Pinto

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

We analyse a model of immune response by T cells (CD4), where regulatory T cells (Tregs) act by inhibiting IL-2 secretion. We introduced an asymmetry reflecting that the difference between the growth and death rates can be higher for the active T cells and the active Tregs than for the inactive T cells and inactive Tregs. This asymmetry mimics the presence of memory T cells. In this paper we start by analysing the model in the absence of Tregs. We obtain an explicit formula that gives approximately the antigenic stimulation of T cells from the concentration of Tregs. Afterwards, we …

Chaotic Behaviour Of The Solutions Of The Moore-Gibson- Thompson Equation, J. Alberto Conejero, Carlos Lizama, Francisco Rodenas Jan 2023

Chaotic Behaviour Of The Solutions Of The Moore-Gibson- Thompson Equation, J. Alberto Conejero, Carlos Lizama, Francisco Rodenas

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

We study a third-order partial differential equation in the form t uttt +autt −c2uxx −buxxt = 0, (1) that corresponds to the one-dimensional version of the Moore-Gibson-Thompson equation arising in high-intensity ultrasound and linear vibrations of elastic structures. In contrast with the current literature on the subject, we show that when the critical parameter g := a − t c2 b is negative, the equation (1) admits an uniformly continuous, chaotic and topologically mixing semigroup on Banach spaces of Herzog’s type.

Similarity Of General Population Matrices And Pseudo-Leslie Matrices, Jo?O F. Alves, Henrique M. Oliveira Jan 2023

Similarity Of General Population Matrices And Pseudo-Leslie Matrices, Jo?O F. Alves, Henrique M. Oliveira

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

A similarity transformation is obtained between general population matrices models of the Usher or Lefkovitch types and a simpler model, the pseudo-Leslie model. The pseudo Leslie model is a matrix that can be decomposed in a row matrix, which is not necessarily non-negative and a subdiagonal positive matrix. This technique has computational advantages, since the solutions of the iterative problem using Leslie matrices are readily obtained . In the case of two age structured population models, one Lefkovitch and another Leslie, the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropies are different, despite the same growth ratio of both models. We prove that Markov matrices associated …

Predicting Synchronization Of Three Mutually Inhibiting Groups Of Oscillators With Strong Resetting, José M. Amig?, Thiago S. Mosqueiro, Ram?N Huerta Jan 2023

Predicting Synchronization Of Three Mutually Inhibiting Groups Of Oscillators With Strong Resetting, José M. Amig?, Thiago S. Mosqueiro, Ram?N Huerta

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Neural populations encode sensory information, memory and motor patterns through electro-chemical firings, which propagate throughout the nervous system via synapses, a structure that couples neurons together. A powerful tool to investigate synchronization issues in such systems are the Phase Resetting curves. However these are best suited for brief and small perturbations. Motivated by the observation of strong inhibition in some neural circuits, we investigate a resetting model with similar features to a known neural population called striatum, in which three groups of neurons inhibit themselves. The model is intrinsically based on Kuramoto oscillators, and is analytically treatable. We derive a …

Chemostats With Time-Dependent Inputs And Wall Growth, Tom?S Caraballo, Xiaoying Han, Peter Kloeden Jan 2023

Chemostats With Time-Dependent Inputs And Wall Growth, Tom?S Caraballo, Xiaoying Han, Peter Kloeden

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Traditional assumptions in the simple chemostat model include fixed availability of the nutrient and its supply rate, and fast flow rate to avoid wall growth. However, these assumptions become unrealistic when the availability of a nutrient depends on the nutrient consumption rate and input nutrient concentration and when the flow rate is not fast enough. In this paper, we relax these assumptions and study the chemostat models with a variable nutrient supplying rate or a variable input nutrient concentration, with or without wall growth. This leads the models to nonautonomous dynamical systems and requires new concepts of nonautonomous attractors from …

Symbolic Dynamics Of Odd Discontinuous Bimodal Maps, Henrique M. Oliveira Jan 2023

Symbolic Dynamics Of Odd Discontinuous Bimodal Maps, Henrique M. Oliveira

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Iterations of odd piecewise continuous maps with two discontinuities, i.e., symmetric discontinuous bimodal maps, are studied. Symbolic dynamics is introduced. The tools of kneading theory are used to study the homology of the discrete dynamical systems generated by the iterations of that type of maps. When there is a Markov matrix, the spectral radius of this matrix is the inverse of the least root of the kneading determinant.

Spectral And Dynamical Invariants In A Complete Clustered Network, J. Leonel Rocha, Sara Fernandes, Clara Gr?Cio, Acilina Caneco Jan 2023

Spectral And Dynamical Invariants In A Complete Clustered Network, J. Leonel Rocha, Sara Fernandes, Clara Gr?Cio, Acilina Caneco

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

The main result of this work is a new criterion for the formation of good clusters in a graph. This criterion uses a new dynamical invariant, the performance of a clustering, that characterizes the quality of the formation of clusters. We prove that the growth of the dynamical invariant, the network topological entropy, has the effect of worsening the quality of a clustering, in a process of cluster formation by the successive removal of edges. Several examples of clustering on the same network are presented to compare the behavior of other parameters such as network topological entropy, conductance, coefficient of …

Approximation Of Hamiltonian Systems Using An Alternative Variational Technique, Sergio Amat, M. José Legaz, Pablo Pedregal Jan 2023

Approximation Of Hamiltonian Systems Using An Alternative Variational Technique, Sergio Amat, M. José Legaz, Pablo Pedregal

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Hamiltonian systems are related to numerous areas of mathematics and have a lot of application branches, such as classical and quantum mechanics, statistics, optical, astronomy, molecular dynamic, plasma physics, etc. In general, the integration of these systems requires the use of geometric integrators. In this paper, we introduce a new variational approach for models which are formulated naturally as conservative systems of ODEs, most importantly Hamiltonian systems. Our variational method for Hamiltonian systems, which is proposed here, is in some sense symplectic and energy preserving. In addition to introducing the technique, we briefly indicate its most basic properties, and test …

Onset Of Hyperbolic Macroscopic Behavior In Complex Systems Subjected To External Agents, Carlo Bianca, Christian Dogbe, Annie Lemarchand Jan 2023

Onset Of Hyperbolic Macroscopic Behavior In Complex Systems Subjected To External Agents, Carlo Bianca, Christian Dogbe, Annie Lemarchand

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

This paper deals with the derivation of hyperbolic equations from a space inhomogeneous thermostatted kinetic equation which can be proposed for the modeling of complex systems subjected to the external actions at the microscopic and macroscopic scales. The particles of the system are able to perform an activity which is modeled by introducing a specific variable. The derivation of the hyperbolic equations is obtained by performing different scalings into the time and space variables and letting the scaling parameter goes to zero. Applications and future research direction are discussed into the last section of the paper.

Optimal Control Of A Bioeconomic Model For A Two-Stage Species With Recruitment, Lilia M. Ladino, Edison I. Sabogal, Jose C. Valverde Jan 2023

Optimal Control Of A Bioeconomic Model For A Two-Stage Species With Recruitment, Lilia M. Ladino, Edison I. Sabogal, Jose C. Valverde

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this work, the capture effort exerted on the adult population (or exploitable population) of a two-stage species with recruitment is considered as a control parameter to investigate the optimal exploitation of the resource, sustainability properties of the population and rent earned from the resource. Pontryagin’s maximum principle is used to characterize the optimal control. The optimal control is derived and then solved numerically using an iterative method with Euler scheme. Simulation results show that the optimal control scheme allows us to get the sustainability of the ecosystem and to validate the model.

Development Of A New Control Algorithm For Automatic Irrigation Scheduling In Soilless Culture, Daniel Rodr?Guez, Juan Reca, Juan Mart?Nez, Rafael L?Pez-Luque, Miguel Urrestarazu Jan 2023

Development Of A New Control Algorithm For Automatic Irrigation Scheduling In Soilless Culture, Daniel Rodr?Guez, Juan Reca, Juan Mart?Nez, Rafael L?Pez-Luque, Miguel Urrestarazu

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In soilless culture, water and nutrients must be frequently and precisely applied due to the reduced volume and low water holding capacity of the substrate. For this reason, irrigation scheduling is an important and difficult task. The use of an irrigation control tray with two electrodes (level sensor) is a simple way for controlling irrigation. Irrigation operation is triggered when the water level in the tray decreases below a preset level. This is a simple on-off control but inflexible because it requires periodic manually calibrations. This work aims at developing a more efficient control system for the irrigation management of …

Dynamic Study Of A Delayed Fractional-Order Seir Epidemic Model With General Incidence And Treatment Functions, Asma Althemairi, Fatma Hussien, Ahmed A. Farghaly Jan 2023

Dynamic Study Of A Delayed Fractional-Order Seir Epidemic Model With General Incidence And Treatment Functions, Asma Althemairi, Fatma Hussien, Ahmed A. Farghaly

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

This study examines the global features of the SEIR epidemic model in its fractional-order version with time delay. General functions are considered to govern the infection transmission rate, and the rate at which diseased individuals are removed from the infected class. First, we form the proposed model in the Caputo case and perform fundamental mathematical analysis of the model solutions, such as checking for non-negativity and boundedness. The basic reproduction number R0 is then provided after computing the equilibrium points. Following that, sufficient criteria for the global stability of each equilibrium are checked using the relevant Lyapunov functions. It is …

On Bessel-Maitland Function And M-Parameter Mittag-Leffler Function Associated With Fractional Calculus Operators And Its Applications, Rupakshi Mishra Pandey, Ankita Chandola, Ritu Agarwal

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Fractional calculus is of utmost importance because of its extensive use in various fields of inequality theory, applied mathematics, science and engineering. In this paper, our aim is to discuss some image formulas involving various fractional operators that has kernel as the Appell function and the Saigo operators with Bessel-Maitland function and m-parameter Mittag-Leffler function. The results are then represented in the form of the generalized Wright-hypergeometric function. Further, some special and particular cases involving the Mittag-Leffler function, the Wiman function, the Prabhakar function among other generalizations of the Mittag- Leffler function are induced.

Rough Sets Theory Based Approach For Predicting Students ́ Performance In E-Learning Systems, Manasik M. Nour, Sumayyah I. Alshber, H. A.Mohamed

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In the recent days, educational data mining Strategies have captured the notice of Scientists according to the rapid growth of educational data and the need for developing methods to discover the hidden knowledge to predict the success of students’ learning. Many methods are used in the previous literature such as ANN, SVM, Naive Bayes classifiers and logistic regression. The original motivation of this work is to fill the gap between the very large dynamic data on educational institutions and the computational programming tools which is not sufficient to find solutions in some cases. The current work proposes a strategy based …
