Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) have gained significant attention for their energy-efficient and fast-inference capabilities, but training SNNs from scratch can be challenging due to the discrete nature of spikes. One alternative method is to convert an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) into an SNN, known as ANN-SNN conversion. Currently, existing ANN-SNN conversion methods often involve redesigning the ANN with a new activation function, rather than utilizing the traditional ReLU, and converting it to an SNN. However, these methods do not take into account the potential performance loss between the regular ANN with ReLU and the tailored ANN. In this work, we …

Three’S A Crowd: Conflicts Of Interest In Third- Party Preparation Of Environmental Impact Statements And Evolving Agency Responsibility Under Nepa, Colleen Mcgrath
UC Law Environmental Journal
Although the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) is designed to promote accountability and transparency about the environmental impacts of large-scale government projects, the lack of oversight over the production of Environmental Impact Statements (EIS) can result in incomplete or biased reports, especially when the EIS is prepared by a third party that has financial or organizational ties to the project. As such, this paper investigates the inherent conflicts of interest that arise when third parties prepare EIS and how that lack of impartiality can undermine the credibility of environmental assessments, erode public trust, and diminish the effectiveness of NEPA as …
A Framework For Personal Respiratory Ethics, Ian W. Goddard
A Framework For Personal Respiratory Ethics, Ian W. Goddard
Journal of Health Ethics
The Covid-19 pandemic raises the need for an ethical framework that addresses the unique ethical challenges and questions arising from airborne infectious diseases. For example, are we ever ethically obliged to wear a face mask? If so, why and when? The Respiratory Ethics Framework (REF) herein proposes pathways to answers grounded in ethical norms and the moral principles of non-harm, beneficence and respect for personal autonomy. REF is a personal ethics wherein your ethical duty to increase your respiratory hygiene efforts—such as by donning a mask—is proportional to your estimation of an increase in the likelihood that your respiratory effluent …

Background: Consumption of an organic diet reduces exposure to a range of agricultural pesticides. Only three studies have examined the effect of an organic diet intervention on exposure to the herbicide glyphosate, the most heavily used agricultural chemical in the world. Despite its widespread use, the primary sources of glyphosate exposure in humans are poorly understood.
Objective: Our objective was to examine the effect of an organic diet intervention on urinary glyphosate concentrations among pregnant individuals.
Methods: We conducted a 2-wk randomized crossover trial in which 39 pregnant participants living near (≤ 0.5 km) or far (> 0.5 km) from …

The Art Of A Slugslayer: An Exploration Of The Process Of Extracting Radulae From Lehmannia Valentiana For The Purpose Of Viewing In The Scanning Electron Microscope, Elizabeth Gannon
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
A radula is an anatomical structure found exclusively in mollusks that acts as both tongue and teeth in feeding. Its structure has been studied for more than a century, yet published methods for identifying, dissecting, and cleaning radulae for microscopy are almost unintelligible to anyone not already familiar with molluscan anatomy. The purpose of this project was to identify the best method of garden slug radula isolation and present it in a manner that anyone could understand and successfully use.
After identifying the location of the radula in the slug, the easiest means of removal proved to be simply regurgitating …

The Impact Of Vitamin D On Cancer: A Mini Review., Gerbenn Seraphin, Sandra Rieger, Martin Hewison, Enrico Capobianco, Thomas S Lisse
Faculty Research 2023
In this review, we summarize the most recent advances in vitamin D cancer research to provide molecular clarity, as well as its translational trajectory across the cancer landscape. Vitamin D is well known for its role in regulating mineral homeostasis; however, vitamin D deficiency has also been linked to the development and progression of a number of cancer types. Recent epigenomic, transcriptomic, and proteomic studies have revealed novel vitamin D-mediated biological mechanisms that regulate cancer cell self-renewal, differentiation, proliferation, transformation, and death. Tumor microenvironmental studies have also revealed dynamic relationships between the immune system and vitamin D's anti-neoplastic properties. These …

Citizen Science Data Reveal Regional Heterogeneity In Phenological Response To Climate In The Large Milkweed Bug,, Alexis Garretson, Tedra Cuddy, Alexandra G Duffy, Inaturalist Citizen Scientists, Rebecca E Forkner
Faculty Research 2023
Regional populations of geographically widespread species may respond to differ- ent environmental factors across the species' range, generating divergent effects of climate change on life-history phenology. Using thousands of citizen science obser- vations extracted from iNaturalist and associated with corresponding temperature, precipitation, elevation, and daylength information, we examined the drivers of adult mating and of nymphal phenology, development, and group size for populations of the large milkweed bug, Oncopeltus fasciatus, in different ecoregions. Research-grade iNaturalist images were correctly identified 98.3% of the time and yielded more than 3000 observations of nymphal groups and 1000 observations of mating adults span- ning …

BACKGROUND: Interactions between immune and tumor cells are critical to determining cancer progression and response. In addition, preclinical prediction of immune-related drug efficacy is limited by interspecies differences between human and mouse, as well as inter-person germline and somatic variation. To address these gaps, we developed an autologous system that models the tumor microenvironment (TME) from individual patients with solid tumors.
METHOD: With patient-derived bone marrow hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs), we engrafted a patient's hematopoietic system in MISTRG6 mice, followed by transfer of patient-derived xenograft (PDX) tissue, providing a fully genetically matched model to recapitulate the individual's TME. …

Ensemble Of Handcrafted Features Of Environment Sound Classification Using A Deep Convolutional Neural Network To Enhance Accuracy And Reduce Computational Complexity, Ibrahim Abdulrahman Aljubayri
Theses and Dissertations
Environmental sound classification (ESC) is an area of active research in signal and image processing that has made significant strides over the past several years. The goal of ESC is to classify environmental sounds by extracting and analyzing handcrafted and deep features from various acoustic events. The task is complex because environmental sounds are typically unstructured, nonstationary, and overlapping. Multiple deep learning (DL) approaches have successfully tackled the ESC problem and outperformed conventional classifiers like k-nearest neighbors (kNN) or support vector machine (SVM). However, most DL approaches have high computational costs, making them unsuitable for use in embedded systems applications. …

Religious Liberty For Religious Child-Welfare Organizations: Promises And Perils, Asma T. Uddin
Notre Dame Law Review Reflection
In the 2015 case Obergefell v. Hodges, the U.S. Supreme Court held that states cannot deny same-sex couples access to marriage and its accompanying benefits. Some religious communities with traditional beliefs about marriage and sexuality responded to the ruling with strong concerns about its potential impact on their religious exercise.
One area of concern involved religious child-welfare organizations that work with the state to provide these services. In all states, there are two options for prospective parents seeking to adopt children. In the private system, birth parents voluntarily place their child up for adoption through a private organization. In …

Leadership traits and behaviors are observed early in human development, and although an improved understanding of youth leadership would usefully inform many real-world contexts (e.g., education, parenting, policy), most empirical work on leadership has been limited to adult populations. The purpose of the current article is to add a developmental perspective to leadership research that has so far been absent. Here, we (a) highlight adolescence as a critical developmental period for leadership emergence and development, (b) argue that leadership among youths is poorly understood and critically understudied, (c) provide exemplars of synergy between research on leadership and adolescent development that …

Graph representation learning methods opened new avenues for addressing complex, real-world problems represented by graphs. However, many graphs used in these applications comprise millions of nodes and billions of edges and are beyond the capabilities of current methods and software implementations. We present GRAPE (Graph Representation Learning, Prediction and Evaluation), a software resource for graph processing and embedding that is able to scale with big graphs by using specialized and smart data structures, algorithms, and a fast parallel implementation of random-walk-based methods. Compared with state-of-the-art software resources, GRAPE shows an improvement of orders of magnitude in empirical space and time …

New Mexico Teachers’ Perceptions Of Students Who Stutter, Kyla Evelyn Cook
Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs
Although stuttering may have a negative impact on quality of life, social support can mediate this impact and result in better outcomes. Teachers can be an important support for children. However, studies have shown that teachers have similar biases and knowledge compared to the public, and therefore may hold harmful beliefs about their students who stutter. This online survey is part of the assessment phase that aims to investigate the local attitudes and beliefs of K-12 school teachers in New Mexico. The data showed that New Mexico teachers have similar knowledge and biases as teachers globally. Results indicate New Mexico …
