Study Of Morphological And Physiological Properties And Pollinators Of The Invasive Callery Pear, Prabina Sharma

All Theses

Callery pear is an invasive tree in 15 states of United States and is currently present in 37 states. Its management has challenged landowners and land managers. Despite being listed as a noxious weed in four states, its study is limited. The accurate estimation of Callery pear biomass will give a clearer picture of the level of invasion and help land managers develop different strategies to control its population. Similarly, identifying possible pollinators of Callery pear is essential to have some insights on pollinators associated with this tree. Hence, the objectives of this study are 1) to calculate total above-ground …

Multiplex Gene Editing In Hepatocytes As A Therapeutic Approach For Familial Hypercholesterolemia, Sarah Minich Aug 2023

Multiplex Gene Editing In Hepatocytes As A Therapeutic Approach For Familial Hypercholesterolemia, Sarah Minich

All Theses

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a genetic disorder associated with elevated levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) that increases the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. FH affects 1 in 250 people.1 Most FH cases are caused by loss-of-function mutations in the either one or both copies of the LDLR gene, which encodes for the LDL-C receptor protein and is responsible for removing excess LDL from the circulating blood plasma.2 Current treatments for FH include medications that reduce LDL from the bloodstream.

Angiopoietin-like 3 (ANGPTL3) is a lipoprotein lipase inhibitor. Studies show that loss-of-function mutations in ANGPTL3 are associated with …

Division of Cardiology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is associated with excess risk of cardiovascular and thrombotic events in the early post-infection period and during convalescence. Despite the progress in our understanding of cardiovascular complications, uncertainty persists with respect to more recent event rates, temporal trends, association between vaccination status and outcomes, and findings within vulnerable subgroups such as older adults (aged 65 years or older), or those undergoing hemodialysis. Sex-informed findings, including results among pregnant and breastfeeding women, as well as adjusted comparisons between male and female adults are similarly understudied.

METHODS: Adult patients, aged ≥18 years, with polymerase chain reaction-confirmed COVID-19 …

High P-T Single Crystal Elasticity Of Zircon And Its Implications For Determining Metamorphic P-T Conditions In Nature, Arlacee Luu Aug 2023

High P-T Single Crystal Elasticity Of Zircon And Its Implications For Determining Metamorphic P-T Conditions In Nature, Arlacee Luu

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Understanding the natural petrologic and tectonic processes, such as slab subduction, requires accurate determination of the pressure (P) and temperature (T) conditions of these processes. Recent development of elastic thermobarometry based on the difference between the elastic evolution of mineral inclusions and their host minerals allows constraining the formation P-T conditions of the inclusion/host system without assuming thermodynamic equilibrium, which is typically needed for the widely used chemistry-based thermobarometry in metamorphic petrology. However, the reliability of elastic thermobarometry heavily depends on the accurate determination of the high P-T single-crystal elastic properties of relevant minerals. In this study, we performed the …

Testing The Niche Center Hypothesis In The Fossil Record Of Atlantic Bivalves, Rhiannon Z. Nolan Aug 2023

Testing The Niche Center Hypothesis In The Fossil Record Of Atlantic Bivalves, Rhiannon Z. Nolan

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Paleoecological analyses of six shallow marine bivalves were conducted to test the Abundant Center Hypothesis using data from the fossil record of the Pleistocene through modern day. This hypothesis predicts the highest abundance of a species is at the center of the geographic or environmental range, decreasing toward the edges. In geographic space, distances to a centerline within a geographic range were variably correlated with population abundances, and some species displayed a sharp drop-off in abundance as distance increased. In environmental space, bivalve species showed moderate correlations between abundance and centrality when measured using cumulative data across the last 2.8 …

Concentrations, compositions, and variability of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) in sewage sludge are characterized using an extensive dataset of 350 samples from 190 wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) across Michigan. All samples are comprised of final treated sewage sludge generated at the end of the wastewater treatment process. Concentrations of Σ24 PFAS are log normally distributed with a range of 1 to 3200 ng/g dry wt. and of average 108 ± 277 ng/g dry wt. Compounds with carboxyl and sulfonic functional groups comprised 29% and 71% of Σ24 PFAS concentrations, respectively, on average. Primary sample variability is associated …

Dynamics And Steering Of A Vibration-Driven Bristle Bot In A Pipe System, Ian Stewart Aug 2023

Dynamics And Steering Of A Vibration-Driven Bristle Bot In A Pipe System, Ian Stewart

All Theses

Soft vibrational robots are robots that incorporate compliant structures into their design and are driven by oscillating actuators. A recent, popular version of a soft vibrational robot is the bristle bot, which uses flexible bristles and a vibration motor to propel itself across surfaces and through pipes. This motion is primarily driven by stick-slip dynamics resulting from asymmetric frictional forces applied at the bristle tips. Depending on the frequency of vibration of the motor, the robot experiences various resonance regions allowing it to maneuver in different directions. Attaching bristles to all sides of the robot and placing it in a …

Comparison Of Vegetative Community And Soil Organic Matter Depth Among Reference Sites And Two Restored Wetlands In The Coastal Plain Of South Carolina, Jessica Clark

All Theses

Wetland loss and degradation from agriculture, urbanization, forestry, and mining is a global issue. South Carolina alone has lost over 27% of its wetlands. This historical wetland loss and climatic changes and impacts make restoring wetlands critical for the state. In restoration, understanding the difference in restored and reference wetland’s vegetation and soil organic matter depth can be crucial in assessing the recovery rate and determining environmental functions and services. The main objectives for our research were to determine differences in soil organic matter depth and vegetative community between the restored Brosnan Forest wetlands, the headwater flats and headwater slopes, …

Assessing The Impact Of States’ Covid Policies On National Park Visitation, Dillon M. Olsen Aug 2023

Assessing The Impact Of States’ Covid Policies On National Park Visitation, Dillon M. Olsen

All Theses

This paper estimates the effect of the coronavirus (COVID) pandemic on outdoor recreation as measured by visitation to U.S. National Parks. Economic theory suggests the pandemic and resulting state policies enacted to limit its spread could have had multiple and confounding effects: (1) increasing demand for outdoor recreation as indoor substitutes became more costly, and (2) reducing the demand for outdoor recreation as travel restrictions, mask mandates, and vaccination requirements increased the cost of park visitation. Using a multiple fixed-effect model, I estimate monthly visitation to National Parks from January 2019 through December 2021 as a function of the stringency …

Knowledge Representation For Conceptual, Motivational, And Affective Processes In Natural Language Communication, Seng Beng Ho, Zhaoxia Wang, Boon-Kiat Quek, Erik Cambria Aug 2023

Knowledge Representation For Conceptual, Motivational, And Affective Processes In Natural Language Communication, Seng Beng Ho, Zhaoxia Wang, Boon-Kiat Quek, Erik Cambria

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Natural language communication is an intricate and complex process. The speaker usually begins with an intention and motivation of what is to be communicated, and what outcomes are expected from the communication, while taking into consideration the listener’s mental model to concoct an appropriate sentence. Likewise, the listener has to interpret the speaker’s message, and respond accordingly, also with the speaker’s mental model in mind. Doing this successfully entails the appropriate representation of the conceptual, motivational, and affective processes that underlie language generation and understanding. Whereas big-data approaches in language processing (such as chatbots and machine translation) have performed well, …

Water Conservation Through Drought-Resilient Landscape Plants And Deficit Irrigation, Ji-Jhong Chen Aug 2023

Water Conservation Through Drought-Resilient Landscape Plants And Deficit Irrigation, Ji-Jhong Chen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Increases in urban population and inadequate rainfall result in imbalanced water budgets in urban and sub-urban regions. Water conservation becomes important in urban landscapes because of increased water demands. Modern landscape designs require drought-resistant plants to maintain urban landscape greenness during water scarcity. Irrigating plants at their irrigation requirements, which is the minimum irrigation rate that can achieve acceptable aesthetic quality, can also conserve water. However, the drought tolerance and irrigation requrements of most landscape plants have not been widely evaluated. Shepherdia ×utahensis ‘Torrey’ (‘Torrey’ buffaloberry) and Penstemon species (beardtongues) are low-water-use landscape plants, but their drought resistance mechanisms are …

Approximate Entropy And Velocity Of Center Of Pressure To Determine Postural Stability: A Pilot Study, Natalie Tipton, Gordon Alderink, Samhita Rhodes Aug 2023

Approximate Entropy And Velocity Of Center Of Pressure To Determine Postural Stability: A Pilot Study, Natalie Tipton, Gordon Alderink, Samhita Rhodes

Open Access Publishing Support Funded Articles

The body’s postural control system is responsible for responding to perturbations of balance and keeping the body upright. During quiet standing, the center of pressure oscillates about the center of mass, counteracting imbalances. These oscillations can be analyzed to determine the degree of stability, which could be helpful in quantifying the effects of brain injuries. In this research, the center of pressure was recorded for stances with feet together and feet tandem, with eyes opened and eyes closed, in neurotypical participants. These signals were analyzed using indices of approximate entropy and velocity to determine how sensitive the measures were in …

Density And Occupancy Of Mammals Along An Urban To Rural Gradient In Northwest Arkansas, Leah E. Mctigue Aug 2023

Density And Occupancy Of Mammals Along An Urban To Rural Gradient In Northwest Arkansas, Leah E. Mctigue

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Human development is a rapidly expanding phenomenon impacting wildlife communities globally. As the human footprint expands, natural greenspace and nature reserves become fragmented and isolated. Wildlife species and communities respond to these changes in different ways. Urban exploiters persist in more urban areas and are able to take advantage of anthropogenic subsidies (food, shelter, etc). Urban avoiders, however, are species that may be pushed out of developed areas or occur in lower densities relative to undisturbed areas. Northwest Arkansas is an optimal location to study the impacts of urbanization on wildlife communities, as the current human population is expected to …

Short-Term Response In Soil Health To Management Practices Within Large- And Small-Scale Cropping Systems In Arkansas, Torri Holder

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Improving soil health is a growing area of interest within large- and small-scale agricultural systems in Arkansas as producers face increasing input costs, increased awareness of variability and intensity in extreme weather events, decreasing resource availability, and suboptimal productivity related to environmental degradation. Practices aimed at improving soil health such as cover cropping and the use of organic amendments are increasingly recommended and adopted; however, research on optimal management in the Mid-South is lacking. Two studies were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of soil health management under both small- and large-scale farming operations in Arkansas. The objective of the small-scale …

Nutrient Responses To Hippuric Acid In Sheep Urine Applied To Pasture Soil Cores, Ethan Avery Collins Aug 2023

Nutrient Responses To Hippuric Acid In Sheep Urine Applied To Pasture Soil Cores, Ethan Avery Collins

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Hippuric acid is a breakdown product of tannins, which bind with proteins in the animal rumen and slow down protein metabolism, thus increasing nitrogen (N) retention in the animal. Increased hippuric acid concentration in bovine and ovine urine applied to soil may decrease rates of nitrification, denitrification, and nitrous oxide fluxes in pasture soils. Additionally, condensed tannins have increased rates of carbon mineralization when incorporated in humus and leaf litter. To evaluate effects of hippuric acid concentration, treatments of urine from sheep fed a tannin-supplemented diet, synthetic urine, or urea controls were applied to intact soil cores seeded with crabgrass …

Rice Material State Diagrams: Trends Of Contemporary Cultivars And Influence Of Nitrogen Application During Production, Evans Ameyaw Owusu Aug 2023

Rice Material State Diagrams: Trends Of Contemporary Cultivars And Influence Of Nitrogen Application During Production, Evans Ameyaw Owusu

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Rice is typically harvested at high moisture content (MC) levels which necessitates drying to low MC levels for safe storage. However, drying at inappropriate temperatures and durations can lead to deterioration of kernel quality such as fissure formation. Kernels with these fissures are typically associated with reduced head rice yields and significant economic losses. Material state diagrams for rice have been created by the University of Arkansas Rice Processing Program (UARPP) as a tool to aid in predicting the ideal temperatures to use during drying and tempering (a process of holding rice at the drying temperature for some duration). The …

Dietary Histidine: Broiler Responsiveness With And Without Endogenous Histidine Reserve Consideration, Kenneth Blake Nelson Aug 2023

Dietary Histidine: Broiler Responsiveness With And Without Endogenous Histidine Reserve Consideration, Kenneth Blake Nelson

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In the past, histidine warranted little concern from poultry nutritionists because it was seldom deficient in practical broiler diets. With most essential amino acids now commercially available as feed-grade forms to partially replace intact protein ingredients, histidine and its minimum in least-cost formulation are receiving fresh attention. Published histidine requirement data for broilers are sparce, and many of these studies have been conducted on males within the first three weeks post-hatch. Moreover, rudimentary dose-response experimental designs may not be applicable to estimate histidine requirements in later growth periods because histidine is uniquely stored within the body. In times of dietary …

Runoff Water Quality And Crop Growth As Affected By Wastewater-Derived Struvite, Machaela Morrison Aug 2023

Runoff Water Quality And Crop Growth As Affected By Wastewater-Derived Struvite, Machaela Morrison

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Mined phosphate rock, used to produce phosphorus (P) fertilizers, is a finite resource. Struvite (MgNH4PO4 • 6H2O) that has been synthetically produced from a stock solution of known P and nitrogen (N) concentrations has been shown to be an effective, alternative fertilizer-P source for various crops. However, little is known about the runoff-water-quality implications from and the crop response to soil application of struvite created from an actual municipal wastewater source. This study consisted of two objectives: i) to evaluate the effects of soil [i.e., Creldon (Oxyaquic Fragiudalf), Dapue (Fluventic Hapludoll), Roxana (Typic Udifluvent), and Calloway (Aquic Fraglossudalf) series], fertilizer-P …
