The Practitioner King - A Study Of Legal Education And Practice In Pakistan, Summaiya Zaidi
The Practitioner King - A Study Of Legal Education And Practice In Pakistan, Summaiya Zaidi
PhD Dissertations
This dissertation is a study of legal education and practice in Pakistan and investigates the rise of the legal practitioner through a socio-historical examination. It seeks to determine the extent to which legal education in Pakistan is bound by colonial norms of practice through a genealogy of the legal practitioner in South Asia where the practitioner emerges as a dominant actor in the legal field. This dissertation argues that the fields of legal education and practice cannot be studied separately because the two are intimately connected for three main reasons: firstly, the law degree serves as an entry requirement to …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Aim Although Antarctica hosted a diverse fauna and flora in the past, its modern climate is too extreme for many lineages: their recent extinction makes it difficult to include the continent in historical biogeographical analyses. We use southern temperate stream‐inhabiting beetles as a model to explore whether Antarctica may be included in historical biogeographic reconstructions in a group absent from Antarctica today, and to test its role in shaping the current distribution of stream‐inhabiting insects. Taxon Coleoptera, Elmidae. Location Southern Hemisphere temperate regions and Antarctica. Methods We included Antarctica in historical biogeographic analyses indirectly, as a component of distance matrices …
‘Safe Couch, Safe House’ Program (Scshp): Reducing Exposure To Toxic Flame Retardants For Children In A Low-Income Public Housing At Hunters View, Bayview-Hunters Point, San Francisco., Aliza Khan
Master's Projects and Capstones
Since the 1970s, flame retardants have been used extensively in consumer goods, including furniture, textile, and electronics, to meet California’s flammability standards. (Gibson et al.,2019) Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs), once the most widely used flame retardants being used in consumer products, were phased out from use in manufacturing as evidence emerged about PBDEs persistence and toxicity. (Hoffman et al.,2017) PBDEs were replaced by Organophosphate Flame Retardants (OPFRs), which has proven to be a case of ‘regrettable substitution’ as exposure to OPFRs is ubiquitous and pervasive in humans due to their volatility and propensity to leach from products into the environment. …
Methodological Analysis On Settler Territoriality And The Rise Of The Yellowstone Wild Bison Advocacy Movement, Red G.R. Burkett
Methodological Analysis On Settler Territoriality And The Rise Of The Yellowstone Wild Bison Advocacy Movement, Red G.R. Burkett
Theses - ALL
Bison bison, also known as the North American Buffalo, are a keystone species of endemic megafauna in the Great Plains prairie ecosystem. Bison were driven nearly to extinction in the late 19th century when millions of buffalo were massacred by settlers in order to starve Indigenous civilians and force them onto federally-managed Reservations as a step in the centuries-long ethnic-cleansing of Turtle Island. Such genocidal methods were a primary tool in erasing the land claims of Indigenous nations and colonizing the territories of Indigenous communities who depended on bison as a primary source of food and materiel for social reproduction. …
Biodegradable, And Biocompatible Hybrid Double- Network Cryogel Scaffold For Cartilage Regeneration, Zining Yang
Biodegradable, And Biocompatible Hybrid Double- Network Cryogel Scaffold For Cartilage Regeneration, Zining Yang
Theses - ALL
Three-dimensional (3D) scaffolds are utilized in tissue engineering to address various unmet medical needs. Cryogels, are macroporous, crosslinked gel networks that are formed by gelation of precursor monomers/polymers under sub-zero conditions. Several studies demonstrate the potential of cryogels, as 3D scaffolds for culturing cells and controlled delivery of potent growth factors while improving upon limited porosity and restricted nutrient exchange that is characteristic of conventional hydrogels. Many current studies utilize free radical polymerization for designing poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and alginate based cryogels resulting in formation of non-biodegradable networks. Here, we designed a hybrid double- network cryogel made of alginate and …

Cascading Effect Of Recent Fires On Moth Abundance Alters Pollen Transport Networks In Rosemary Bald Habitats, Karma Kashmir Thomas
Theses - ALL
Fire frequency and severity have increased dramatically due to anthropogenic activity including historic fire suppression leading to fuel build-up. Investigating the influence of fire and fire-related characteristics (frequency, severity, spread, etc.) on organisms and their ecosystem services is therefore of high importance. This work is especially pertinent for arthropods, which constitute a large portion of global diversity and offer important ecosystem services, including pollination. Existing literature has demonstrated the susceptibility of many Lepidoptera to fire, but this has been variable across studies, underscoring the need to consider how fire-related variables impact survival. In addition, there continues to be a global …

Development Of Air-Jetting System For Bioprinting Of Alginate Micro-Droplets, Nathan Lingenfelter
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Transplantation of organoids has been demonstrated to be a promising cure to many diseases including Type-1 diabetes. However, achieving consistent and robust derivations of mature organoids from human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) is challenging. Cellular mechano-transduction, where mechanical stimuli is sensed and converted to biochemical signaling, has been proposed to overcome this challenge. This pathway relies on encapsulating hPSCs in a small volume of a biomaterial such as alginate, which has been widely used as cell encapsulation materials due to its biocompatibility and selective permeability. In this project, we focused on developing an air-jetting based technique to generate small and …

The SWI/SNF ATP-dependent chromatin remodeler is a master regulator of the epigenome, controlling pluripotency and differentiation. Towards the C-terminus of the catalytic subunit of SWI/SNF is a motif called the AT-hook that is evolutionary conserved. The AT-hook is present in many chromatin modifiers and generally thought to help anchor them to DNA. We observe however that the AT-hook regulates the intrinsic DNA-stimulated ATPase activity aside from promoting SWI/SNF recruitment to DNA or nucleosomes by increasing the reaction velocity a factor of 13 with no accompanying change in substrate affinity (K

Cloning A Fusion Gene For The Identification Of The Proteins Contained In Ubiquitin-Rich Condensates, Grace M. Whitehead
Cloning A Fusion Gene For The Identification Of The Proteins Contained In Ubiquitin-Rich Condensates, Grace M. Whitehead
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Cellular liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) is a mechanism by which membraneless organelles such as polyubiquitinated condensates form and function. A non-receptor tyrosine kinase, Tnk1, binds to the polyubiquitin of polyubiquitinated condensates that are labeled for the proteasome for autophagy through its ubiquitin association (UBA) domain. This tyrosine kinase has links to a subset of hematological cancers, so identifying the protein contents within polyubiquitinated condensates is essential for understanding their significance in cancer pathways and to eventually identify potential therapeutic targets. This honors thesis focuses on the cloning of a fusion gene, pcDNA3.1 mNeonGreen–V5–UBA, as well as its deactivated L36D variant, …
