Mental Health Treatment And The Criminal Justice System, Susana Lehan-Trasente
Mental Health Treatment And The Criminal Justice System, Susana Lehan-Trasente
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The criminal justice system has established interventions for those who have mental illness and have been charged with criminal complaints. In New York State, the Mental Health Court has been established to address these issues and is to be used by all counties. However, the treatment and probation interventions vary from county to county. Saratoga County uses a Single Point of Access (SPOA) which receives referrals from the general court and probation officers. SPOA refers clients to a variety of treatment interventions available in the county. In Monroe County, the Mental Health Court refers the criminally involved/mentally ill individual to …
Comparative Study Of Risky Sexual Behaviors In African American Adolescents Who Use Drugs And Alcohol, Angela Matthew
Comparative Study Of Risky Sexual Behaviors In African American Adolescents Who Use Drugs And Alcohol, Angela Matthew
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a major public health problem in the United States. Adolescents are a high majority of these cases, with African American adolescents being affected disproportionally. Previous research has shown that risky sexual behaviors, such as non-condom use, multiple sexual partners, early initiation of sexual intercourse, and alcohol or marijuana use before sexual intercourse put adolescents at a higher risk of contracting an STI when they are sexually active. These behaviors can be observed through the theoretical framework of the problem behavior theory that describes the constructs of why individuals engage certain behaviors. How alcohol and drug …
Effects Of Supermax On Inmate Mental Health: Phenomenological Experiences Of Knowledgeable Professionals, Lea Michelle Miller
Effects Of Supermax On Inmate Mental Health: Phenomenological Experiences Of Knowledgeable Professionals, Lea Michelle Miller
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
It may or may not be true that the conditions and practices associated with supermax sentencing are both creating and exacerbating psychological harm for the inmates who are exposed to them. To date, there is evidence that both supports and refutes the contention that supermax sentencing is psychologically harmful; thus, the literature necessitates additional research into this phenomenon. This qualitative study was conducted to add to the extant body of knowledge relevant to supermax prisons and populations by exploring the lived experiences of professionals who have worked with them. This research was conceptually based in the current understanding of social …
Analyzing Small Business Strategies To Prevent External Cybersecurity Threats, Dr. Kevin E. Moore
Analyzing Small Business Strategies To Prevent External Cybersecurity Threats, Dr. Kevin E. Moore
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Some small businesses’ cybersecurity analysts lack strategies to prevent their organizations from compromising personally identifiable information (PII) via external cybersecurity threats. Small business leaders are concerned, as they are the most targeted critical infrastructures in the United States and are a vital part of the economic system as data breaches threaten the viability of these organizations. Grounded in routine activity theory, the purpose of this pragmatic qualitative inquiry was to explore strategies small business organizations utilize to prevent external cybersecurity threats. The participants were nine cybersecurity analysts who utilized strategies to defend small businesses from external threats. Data were collected …
Parenting From Juvenile Confinement: Adults’ Reflections On Their Juvenile Experience, Lakeasha R. Moore
Parenting From Juvenile Confinement: Adults’ Reflections On Their Juvenile Experience, Lakeasha R. Moore
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractMass incarceration in the United States has resulted in an estimated 19.7 million youth living in fatherless homes. Incarcerated juvenile fathers are contributing to that number. Juvenile fathers who are incarcerated is a socially pertinent topic with significant implications, yet child developmental scholars understudy it. This phenomenological qualitative study was conducted to fill this gap by exploring the lived experiences of adults who, as juveniles, were incarcerated fathers and how they coped with social and emotional stressors while attempting to balance adolescence and defining fatherhood. Five adult males were interviewed and asked a series of four demographic and 18 semistructured …
Male Sexual Offender Recidivism Impact On Sex Crime Investigations, Jessica Ann Muccione
Male Sexual Offender Recidivism Impact On Sex Crime Investigations, Jessica Ann Muccione
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The purpose of this research was to explore how male sexual offender recidivism impacted sex crime investigations. Recidivism is a widely recognized social problem that affects all of society. Understanding the influence that male sex offender recidivism may have on a sex crime investigation is key to recognizing its relationship to recidivism. The methodology used in this study was a basic qualitative inquiry to explore how male sex offender recidivism impacts sex crime investigations. Based on Hirschi’s social bond theory, the study addressed ways a sexual offender may conform to societal requirements through attachments and personal values. The application of …
A Meta-Analysis Of Higher Education On Professional Police Behavior Patterns, Augustine S. Nugba
A Meta-Analysis Of Higher Education On Professional Police Behavior Patterns, Augustine S. Nugba
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Police misconduct has become an issue of concern among law enforcement officers and other stakeholders. Approximately, 10% of law enforcement officers commit 90% of misconduct problems, and as high as 45% of the misconduct generates citizen complaints. Thus, there has been an increasing debate on whether police officers should attain a college education or not. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to investigate the relationship between education level and the number of complaints filed against police officers for misconduct. This study was grounded on the cognitive development theory. The study was conducted by following the guidelines proposed by …
Exploring Jury Nullification: Its Political History, Current, And Potential Impact On Policy, David Harold Penny
Exploring Jury Nullification: Its Political History, Current, And Potential Impact On Policy, David Harold Penny
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Jury nullification (JN) is when a jury knows a defendant is legally guilty, but states they are not guilty, believing that their verdict better serves justice in that case. The problem is the violation of the Constitution’s equal protection clause for all citizens, caused by the intentional omission in most judges’ instructions to juries of JN. The purpose of the study was to fill the gap in the literature on jury behavior and address the problem of JN. The study framework is chaos theory as applied by Horowitz to jury behavior. It describes judges and lawmakers mistrust of juries associated …
Reducing Opioid Prescribing By Using The Center For Disease Control Guidelines, Christina Marie Peters
Reducing Opioid Prescribing By Using The Center For Disease Control Guidelines, Christina Marie Peters
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Opioid abuse is a serious national health crisis resulting in overdose and increased mortality in chronic pain patients. The purpose of this evidenced-based, quality improvement (QI) project was to improve primary care provider’s (PCP) awareness of The Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) opioid prescribing guidelines to reduce opioid prescribing at this project site. The Donabedian model of structure, process, and outcome was used as the framework for this QI project. Lewin’s change management model of unfreezing and freezing was used as a guide to implement organization change by creating problem awareness, seeking alternative methods, and integrating the new …

African American Women’S Experiences Coping With Stress Through Community-Based Services, Delisa V. Procks
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Few studies have studied how community-based services (CBS) work to mitigate the strong Black woman image (SBWI) coping mechanism for Black women to improve their mental health. The purpose of this generic, qualitative study was to understand the experiences of 10 African American women, ages 18 and older, who identified with the SBWI and had received CBS to address their stress-related coping strategies. Transactional theory of coping with stress and the SBWI approach was used as the framework to help explain how stress in terms of the SBWI impacted the response of the African American women within their environment. Data …
Impact Of Minority Incarceration On The Family Unit, Huey S. Ratcliff
Impact Of Minority Incarceration On The Family Unit, Huey S. Ratcliff
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The economic impact of incarceration on minority family units has both secondary and third-order effects on the minority family unit when a family member is incarcerated, which is exacerbated when the incarcerated family member was both the primary breadwinner and a parent. The purpose of this study was to identify the social and economic effects incarceration has on minority families. The study addressed how minority families adjust to changes in organic composition and how the minority family copes with increased debt and loss of earning potential. Further, the study sought to answer how minority families overcome economic hardship when the …
Postsecondary Education, Self-Efficacy, And Organizational Commitment Impact On Previously Incarcerated Employee Job Satisfaction, Elizabeth Sadler Roney
Postsecondary Education, Self-Efficacy, And Organizational Commitment Impact On Previously Incarcerated Employee Job Satisfaction, Elizabeth Sadler Roney
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
A study was conducted to determine if previously incarcerated employee age, postsecondary education (PSE) attainment, prior incarceration status, and assessed self-efficacy predict job satisfaction. It also considered if organizational commitment had a moderating effect on the predictors ability to forecast the criterion. Two underlying theories considered in this study are Bandura’s social learning theory and Vroom’s expectancy theory. The obtained sample of 22 participants included seven previously incarcerated individuals. Demographic data used as predictors were employee age, PSE attainment, and prior incarceration status. Three instruments used included the New General Self-Efficacy Survey to assess self-efficacy as a predictor, the Job …
Heterosexual Male Sexual Assault Victims Experience Of Challenges In Reporting Their Victimization, Jessica Lynn Rundle
Heterosexual Male Sexual Assault Victims Experience Of Challenges In Reporting Their Victimization, Jessica Lynn Rundle
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to identify the gender specific challenges male sexual assault victims face when they report their victimization. Researchers can use their knowledge of these challenges reduce the stigmatization that is correlated with being a male sexual assault victim. The theoretical basis for this study was Joseph Pleck’s sex role strain paradigm, also known as the gender role strain paradigm. The research questions pertained to the psychological challenges that male sexual assault victims encounter when they begin seeking out services. The sample for this study consisted of eight heterosexual male participants who are sexual assault …

The Rome Statute And Its Significance In Combatting Impunity For Rape In Ethiopia, Kassahun Yibeltal Sahilu
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The goal of ending impunity for atrocity crimes including rape is globally appreciated and accepted with little reservation; however, the actual relevance to the domestic situation in Ethiopia has not been previously explored. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of the Rome Statute, a treaty on atrocity crimes, in combating impunity for perpetrators of rape in Ethiopia in light of Feminist Theory and Domestic Politics of Theory of Treaty Compliance. The research explored the significance of the treaty considering the actual condition of the country by conducting semi-structured group and personal interviews with two lawyers working …

Dna Transfer And Persistence On Non-Porous Surfaces Submerged In Spring Water [Preliminary Study], Morgan L.. Korzik, Josep De Alcaraz-Fossoul, Michael S. Adamowicz, David San Pietro
Forensic Science: Faculty Publications
Submerged items are often thought to lack evidentiary value. However, previous studies have shown the ability to recover DNA from submerged porous items for upwards of six weeks. The crevices or interweaving fibers in porous items are thought to protect DNA from being washed away. It is hypothesized that, because non-porous surfaces do not have the same traits that might aid in DNA retention, then DNA quantities and the number of donor alleles recovered would decrease over longer submersion periods. Additionally, it is hypothesized that DNA quantity and the number of alleles would be negatively affected by flow conditions. Neat …

Terrible Freedom, Ambiguous Authenticity, And The Pragmatism Of The Endangered: Why Free Speech In Law School Gets Complicated, Leonard M. Niehoff
Articles
We idealize colleges and universities as places of unfettered inquiry, where freedom of expression flourishes. The Supreme Court has described the university classroom as “peculiarly the ‘marketplace of ideas.’” It declared: “The Nation’s future depends upon leaders trained through wide exposure to that robust exchange of ideas which discovers truth out of a multitude of tongues, [rather] than through any kind of authoritative selection.” The exchange of competing ideas takes place not only in classrooms, but also in public spaces, dormitories, student organizations, and in countless other campus contexts.

Still, We Thrive: Understanding How Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, And Other Men Who Have Sex With Men (Gbtmsm) Experience Structural Barriers & Facilitators To Wellness, Lucas Gergyek
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Historically and concurrently, structural violence has been a significant force influencing the sexual health and broader health of gay, bisexual, transgender and other men who have sex with men (GBTMSM). Yet to date, the majority of projects exploring the health inequities facing GBTMSM have focused on intrapsychic and behavioural factors as most related to poor health outcomes. As well, these studies are sometimes deficits focused, and fail to evaluate how GBTMSM continue to thrive, and maintain positive health. As a result, the ways in which systems and policies underlie and perpetuate health inequities facing GBTMSM have been somewhat obscured. Connectedly, …
Adding Women To The Conversation On Safe Consumption Sites: A Qualitative Interview Study With Poor And Marginalized Women Who Use Illicit Substances, Kaitlin Waechter
Adding Women To The Conversation On Safe Consumption Sites: A Qualitative Interview Study With Poor And Marginalized Women Who Use Illicit Substances, Kaitlin Waechter
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Women’s erasure from discourses pertaining to substance use and safe consumption sites (SCSs) means harm reduction efforts are developed through the male lens. This research seeks to discover why women do (or do not) access SCSs so as to determine if and how SCSs address the unique gendered needs of women who use illicit substances. Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with 14 women-identified individuals who use illicit substances. Participants were recruited from a non-profit organization that offers harm reduction, but is not itself a SCS in order to capture a full range of perspectives on the SCS in their community. …
“It Felt Like A Sense Of Rape:” Women’S Experiences Of Strip Searching In Prison As Gendered, Misogynoir, And Colonial Genocidal Sexual Violence, Jessica Hutchison
“It Felt Like A Sense Of Rape:” Women’S Experiences Of Strip Searching In Prison As Gendered, Misogynoir, And Colonial Genocidal Sexual Violence, Jessica Hutchison
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Previously imprisoned women have long been sounding the alarm about the harms of strip searching and calling for it to be banned. However, it remains a routine prison practice and research into it is scant. Furthermore, Canada is incarcerating Indigenous women at genocidal levels and disproportionately imprisoning Black women. Therefore, my research explored the use of strip searching in federal prisons through anti-colonial and anti-racist feminist frameworks, specifically, abolition feminism.
My research was grounded in the ethic of relational accountability and centred reciprocity, respect, and responsibility in each phase. I gathered stories from 23 formerly incarcerated women from across Canada …
Experiences Of Quality Of Life Among Youth Experiencing Homelessness, Mental Health Problems, And Addictions, Wilsy Choudhary
Experiences Of Quality Of Life Among Youth Experiencing Homelessness, Mental Health Problems, And Addictions, Wilsy Choudhary
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Youth experiencing homelessness are often at a higher risk for developing concurrent mental health and addiction disorders. Existing interventions such as Housing First for Youth (H4FY) aim to provide youth experiencing homelessness with immediate access to safe, affordable housing as well as social inclusion and wellness supports. Furthermore, mental health interventions in the form of an integrated mental health and addictions (IMHA) service model have also been proposed to address the access barriers in place for youth experiencing homelessness, such as arbitrary exclusion criteria for substance use, long waiting periods and to further help them navigate the existing complex mental …
Should Prosecutors Be Expected To Rectify Wrongful Convictions, Bruce A. Green
Should Prosecutors Be Expected To Rectify Wrongful Convictions, Bruce A. Green
Faculty Scholarship
In 2008, the American Bar Association amended the Model Rules of Professional Conduct to address prosecutors’ post-conviction conduct. Model Rules 3.8(g) and (h) establish the remedial steps a prosecutor must take after achieving a criminal conviction when confronted with significant new evidence of an injustice. They require prosecutors to disclose the new exculpatory evidence and to take reasonable steps to initiate an investigation, and if clear and convincing evidence then establishes the convicted defendant’s innocence, the prosecutors’ office must take reasonable steps to rectify the injustice. Since then, 24 state judiciaries have adopted versions of one or both rules. Although …
Punishment Without The State, I. Bennett Capers
Punishment Without The State, I. Bennett Capers
Faculty Scholarship
People are speaking up on social media and in other virtual spaces, sometimes to spur the criminal process, sometimes in response to the criminal system’s perceived failures, and even sometimes completely indifferent to the criminal system. People are expressing moral condemnation. They are shaming, shunning, banishing, and canceling. What are the implications of punishment through virtual spaces, in lieu of the usual—and now seemingly antiquated—space of physical courtrooms? More broadly, when all the world can become a virtual courtroom, a “place” for judgment, what are the implications for how we think about crime itself? And perhaps most importantly, if social …

Xai-Driven Cnn For Diabetic Retinopathy Detection, Vikas Shenoy Pete
Master's Projects
Diabetes, a chronic metabolic disorder, poses a significant health threat with potentially severe consequences, including diabetic retinopathy, a leading cause of blindness. In this project, we tackle this threat by developing a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to support the diagnosis based on eye images. The aim is early detection and intervention to mitigate the effects of diabetes on eye health. To enhance transparency and interpretability, we incorporate explainable AI techniques. This research not only contributes to the early diagnosis of diabetic eye disease but also advances our understanding of how deep learning models arrive at their decisions, fostering trust and …

Reconsidering A Private Right Of Action Under Vawa: How The Media Portrays Violence Against Women And Its Effect On Commerce Clause Jurisprudence, Lauren Chamberlin
Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal
The note argues that the Violence Against Women Act's (VAWA) private right of action was a valid exercise of Congress's Commerce Clause powers, contrary to the Supreme Court's ruling in United States v. Morrison. It contends that gender-based violence substantially affects interstate commerce and that the Court's decision was influenced by outdated perceptions of such violence as a private matter. The article advocates for the reenactment of the private right of action, emphasizing the need for Congress, the courts, and the states to address the economic and societal impacts of gender-based violence.

The Negative Impacts Of Border Patrol On The Mental Health Of Migrants, Breyana M. Newton
The Negative Impacts Of Border Patrol On The Mental Health Of Migrants, Breyana M. Newton
Pell Scholars and Senior Theses
The research in this paper is a deep dive into the actions of Border Patrol on migrants and refugees and their effects on the individual. This includes impacts on mental health, child development, resettlement prevention, and racism and discrimination within border patrol itself. To understand all of this and how wide reaching all of this goes there needs to be a reflection on the history and policies of Border Patrol and the Government behind it.
The problem with patrolling our borders is that there are consequences on the U.S. as a nation and unintended consequences on those individuals migrating into …
Female Lawyers Don’T Need Pity; They Need A Paycheck, Meagan S. Bilodeau
Female Lawyers Don’T Need Pity; They Need A Paycheck, Meagan S. Bilodeau
Pell Scholars and Senior Theses
Whether it's pity or patronization female lawyers have often been criticized. They're visualized on the lower level of the patriarchal hierarchy system in the Hollywood courtroom. However, women that hold emotional intelligence don't need pity. Emotional intelligence encompasses how to set boundaries, stay motivated, hold healthy relationships inside and outside the courtroom, as well as maintain self-regulation. Through analysis of the biographical films Erin Brockovich, On the Basis of Sex, and The Mauritanian this study explores how extensively psychological resilience subfactors are depicted, proving whether or not female lawyers are emotionally prepared to succeed in their noteworthy cases.
