Trauma-Informed Instruction And How It Influences Mental Health Outcomes In Students With Disabilities, Jeffery Phillip Bishop Jan 2023

Trauma-Informed Instruction And How It Influences Mental Health Outcomes In Students With Disabilities, Jeffery Phillip Bishop

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A growing body of research has shown that mental health needs among school-age children exceed the number of mental health professionals available to address those needs. Since students spend a lot of their time at school, much of the responsibility for identifying and responding to student mental health concerns falls mainly on the shoulders of teachers. Teachers often lack the training and resources to support these growing needs, and the recent pandemic has only compounded the issue. Students with intellectual disabilities not only have the same or greater level of mental health concerns as their non-disabled peers but also lack …

Beyond Resilience: Arming Special Education Teachers With “Hope Theory” In The Fight Against Burnout, Eden E. Buchwald-Mcglennon

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Teachers have been forced to face many new workplace challenges since the COVID-19 pandemic emerged in March 2020; this has resulted in increased job-related stress. Pre-pandemic, teacher stress levels were already much higher than other occupations and strongly linked to teacher attrition. The majority of research in the field of special education, identifies “burnout” as the leading predictor of teacher attrition. Indeed, burnout has been dubbed the “reward for overwork” and the end result is exhaustion, depersonalization, a sense of inefficacy and often a departure from the field of education. The following research explores the destructive nature and scope of …

Supporting K-12 Students With Anxiety: The Teacher's Role, Interventions And Methods To Reduce Anxiety, John Jordan Douglas

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a literature review of evidence-based practices that support K-12 students with anxiety. Three areas addressing evidence-based practices for students with anxiety include the role of the teacher, interventions, and methods to reduce test anxiety. Literature revealed the significance of the teacher’s role in building positive relationships to support students with anxiety and mental health issues. Common interventions and methods for test anxiety included mindfulness, breathing exercises, and muscle relaxation techniques. Small sample sizes and few clinically diagnosed anxiety disorders caused limitations in research. Further research should focus specifically on methods that support students with a diagnosed anxiety …

Implications Of Teacher Burnout Related To Being A Special Education Provider, William M Sprouls Jan 2023

Implications Of Teacher Burnout Related To Being A Special Education Provider, William M Sprouls

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT The profession of special education instructor has evolved over the years. Special education teachers must often manage lesson plans that make accommodations for all intellectual and disability needs of students. Special education teachers are charged with leading the IEP team and overseeing a wide range of goals, including occupational, speech, physical, and emotional behavioral, and modified education that integrates the student into the least restrictive environment mandated by law. These responsibilities often vary across disabilities and federal educational settings. The author of this thesis reviewed a number of relevant articles that explored the multitude of responsibilities required of special …

Exploring Occupation-Based Sleep Interventions For School-Aged Children Experiencing Homelessness: A Critically Appraised Topic, Aspen Delano, Joslynn Sauer, Emily Vieth Jan 2023

Exploring Occupation-Based Sleep Interventions For School-Aged Children Experiencing Homelessness: A Critically Appraised Topic, Aspen Delano, Joslynn Sauer, Emily Vieth

Critically Appraised Topics

Sleep is a crucial component of healthy neurological development throughout childhood. According to Suni (2023a), elementary school-aged children between the ages of 6 and 12 experience sleep deprivation when they obtain less than 9 hours of sleep per night. Contie (2022) found that children experiencing insufficient sleep had more mental health and behavioral challenges than those who had sufficient sleep. Additionally, Contie (2022) found that children experiencing sleep deprivation had less gray matter and volume in their brains. This impacts cognitive functioning, specifically decision-making, conflict-solving, working memory, and learning. The brain undergoes critical development of the basal ganglia, ganglia-thalamus-cortex circuit, …

Native American Youth & Substance Abuse Treatment: An Adjustable Intervention For Healing, Megan K. Saboo Jan 2023

Native American Youth & Substance Abuse Treatment: An Adjustable Intervention For Healing, Megan K. Saboo

Honors Capstone Projects

Substance abuse and mental health disparities are major issues that impact the lives of Native American people. In order to combat the issue of early onset substance abuse experienced by Native youth, culturally sensitive interventions have been created and utilized by Indigenous communities. However, little research has examined these interventions. In this project, existing interventions are examined and conclusions and implications from the discussion will be used to propose an intervention that may be utilized to treat substance use disorder among Native youth.

Know An Emotion By The Company It Keeps: Word Embeddings From Reddit/Coronavirus, Alejandro García-Rudolph, David Sanchez-Pinsach, Dietmar Frey, Eloy Opisso, Katryna Cisek, John Kelleher

Articles

Social media is a crucial communication tool (e.g., with 430 million monthly active users in online forums such as Reddit), being an objective of Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques. One of them (word embeddings) is based on the quotation, “You shall know a word by the company it keeps,” highlighting the importance of context in NLP. Meanwhile, “Context is everything in Emotion Research.” Therefore, we aimed to train a model (W2V) for generating word associations (also known as embeddings) using a popular Coronavirus Reddit forum, validate them using public evidence and apply them to the discovery of context for specific …

Rigorous Care: The Early Warning Syllabus, Michelle Warren, Guadalupe Ortega, Jenny Oh Jan 2023

Rigorous Care: The Early Warning Syllabus, Michelle Warren, Guadalupe Ortega, Jenny Oh

Open Education Initiative Projects

This document includes a set of policies that are designed to provide efficient ways for instructors to implement pedagogies of care. The principle of “rigorous care” is informed by research on learning, accessibility, and mental health. The idea of “early warnings” is meant to help students identify their needs and seek support before problems become unmanageable. Both ideas respect the fact that both students and instructors work under enormous pressure.

Each policy statement is preceded by a brief framing justification and followed by a selected bibliography of the research and testimonials that have informed the policy.

Drawing On The Strengths Of Community Health Workers To Address Sexually Transmitted Infections: Roles, Medicaid Reimbursement, And Partnerships, Naomi Seiler, Katie Horton, Paige Organick-Lee, Claire Heyison, Alexis Osei, Greg Dwyer, Aaron Karacuschansky, Mekhi Washington, Amanda Spott

Health Policy and Management Informal Communications

Rates of bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the United States are high and, largely, still soaring. Though chlamydia cases have decreased slightly since 2017, gonorrhea and syphilis have increased by 25% and 68%, respectively, and congenital syphilis has increased by 184%. Bacterial STI can lead to pain, infertility, and even, in the case of syphilis and congenital syphilis, death. With appropriate detection and treatment, all of these STIs are curable. And yet a range of barriers between communities and the healthcare system perpetuate the STI epidemic.

Community health workers (CHWs) could play a key role in helping bridge the …

The Relationship Between Marijuana Policy And Prejudice Regarding Adult Black Americans, Caitlin Turner Jan 2023

The Relationship Between Marijuana Policy And Prejudice Regarding Adult Black Americans, Caitlin Turner

Perspectives

Marijuana policy has been a crucial debate for many years in America. Even with the legalization of marijuana in many states, Black people are still being arrested at an unjustified rate in contrast to white people. These differences have led to the overrepresentation of Black people incarcerated for this low-level crime as a direct result of the aftermath of the War on Drugs. This paper will analyze the effects of the overcriminalization of marijuana, more specifically among Black people. It will question the extent of marijuana policy on the outcomes of Black people versus white people and will discuss what …

Libraries As Community: Investigating Social Infrastructure And Community Cohesion, Mora N. Rehm Jan 2023

Libraries As Community: Investigating Social Infrastructure And Community Cohesion, Mora N. Rehm

Kentucky Journal of Undergraduate Scholarship

Libraries are a form of public infrastructure that guide, protect, and preserve the spirit of community. Established as the guarantor of a peaceful, well-informed society, this research evaluates the library's methods and degree of influence over citizens' feelings of community alongside other social phenomena; looking both within and without existing systems, the researcher posits a model of critical librarianship, acknowledging that current practices reinforce existing structures of inequity and privilege. A methodological investigation is then made into the link between library and community through use of secondary data analysis, concluding that strong library systems positively associate with community cohesion on …

Comparing Substance Use Social Issues In Appalachian And Non-Appalachian Regions In Kentucky, Erica C. Bellamy, James N. Maples Jan 2023

Comparing Substance Use Social Issues In Appalachian And Non-Appalachian Regions In Kentucky, Erica C. Bellamy, James N. Maples

Kentucky Journal of Undergraduate Scholarship

Substance use and abuse is not a uniquely Appalachian problem, but it remains a prevalent social problem for the geographical region. Kentucky has been one of the central states experiencing generations of substance abuse, ranging from methamphetamines to OxyContin to heroin. Eastern Kentucky, which includes a portion of Central Appalachia, has been a focal point for the proposed war against substance use. What remains undemonstrated in studies is exactly how substance abuse differs between the Central Appalachian counties of Eastern Kentucky and the remainder of the state, if any difference exists at all. In this study, the researchers examine how …

Social Work Masters Capstone Projects

This capstone will demonstrate my competency and ability to use interprofessional collaboration with the nine Eastern Kentucky University (2022a) Master of Social Work (MSW) program interprofessional social work practice competencies. I will begin by describing my practicum setting and learning goals (EKU, 2022b) for the MSW program, as well as the two sub-groups within the agency I primarily worked with. Next, I will do a literature review of previously researched interprofessional collaboration with the two sub-groups, before demonstrating my practice of the nine competencies using my practicum experiences. I will then finally end with evaluating the effectiveness of interprofessional collaboration …

Past And Present: Important Women In Leadership Roles, Robyn Stevenson Jan 2023

Past And Present: Important Women In Leadership Roles, Robyn Stevenson

Integrated Studies

Women as leaders is not a new concept. History shows us how many women accomplished wonderful things; current day news shows us how many women are still accomplishing wonderful things. With the past and the present, we should expect our future to be even more dominated by women. This paper takes a look at the women that have showed up for the world in many different ways, and gives a brief look into their lives. Some of the women are very well known, some have stayed under the radar and not as recognized. But the one thing that they all …
