Women Caregivers Of Palliative Care Patients: The Arogyakeralam Project In Kerala, India, Florence Jose
Journal of International Women's Studies
Palliative care is primarily holistic care given to the patient and their family where the caregiver plays a significant role in the patient’s health and wellbeing. This research studies the perception of the caregivers on the functioning of the Arogyakeralam palliative care project in Kerala, India, in order to understand the challenges faced by women caregivers of this type of patient. In this descriptive and analytical study, the researcher used the multi-stage random sampling methodology. A structured interview schedule was used to obtain data from 54 primary caregivers of palliative care patients who were randomly and proportionately selected from two …

Child Sexual Abuse And Exploitation Through Livestreaming In Indonesia: Unequal Power Relations At The Root Of Child Victimization, Ni Luh Tasya Prathisthita Tanaya, Ni Made Martini Puteri
Journal of International Women's Studies
Child sexual abuse and exploitation through livestreaming is a rising phenomenon of online child sexual abuse and exploitation in Indonesia. This phenomenon takes place in both offline and online spaces. Moreover, due to the active involvement of the viewers, these content viewers can also be considered as offenders. Thus, it is necessary to recognize this phenomenon as a crime against children, instead of merely a sexual act. By using a criminology perspective, this research explores the roots of this phenomenon, the impact on survivors, and the child protection system’s actions against it. This qualitative study used secondary data analysis, derived …
Compassion Fatigue In Nursing, Madeline Bragaw
Compassion Fatigue In Nursing, Madeline Bragaw
Academic Festival
What started as the reason nurses chose the field has now become the reason many nurses are choosing to leave. Empathy and compassion are two qualities that make nurses so special, but when nurses begin to take on the emotional stress of their patients’ pain and illnesses, they can grow burnt out and fatigued. Compassion fatigue is defined as, “apathy or indifference towards the suffering of others” (Oxford University Press, 2021). As a protective mechanism, nurses can begin to become apathetic to suffering when they are constantly seeing people go through emotional and physical pain. While nurses are protecting themselves, …
The Rise Of Art Therapy As A Robust Treatment For Mental Health Issues, Erin Clark
The Rise Of Art Therapy As A Robust Treatment For Mental Health Issues, Erin Clark
Academic Festival
Art therapy is a method of treatment used within a broad spectrum of patients. There are many forms of art therapy: it can be done through music, drama, painting or drawing, and dance-movement. These methods of therapy can be used for mentally disabled patients, PTSD victims, persons facing a phobia, non-vocal patients, and patients with psychosis. On top of all these situations, art therapy is also utilized in traditional therapy with neurotypical patients. The common goal of art therapy varies on the patient. In some cases, the common goal is a lift of trauma or even full recovery, in other …

Honors Capstone Paper Abstract
In this paper, the commonly unspoken trials of pregnant women and new mothers will be discussed. Beyond this, solutions are going to be proposed and proven worthwhile in decreasing the incidence of postpartum depression (PPD) and its accompanying tragic, perinatal conditions. The extent of the misfortunes of PPD are explored, and the subject of fear of childbirth is fully explained and identified as a causative factor. All of this information is used to advocate for obstetrician-led mental health education and maintenance classes for pregnant women during their second trimester of pregnancy. Compared against current perinatal guidelines …
Sex Trafficking In The United States, Julia Kavanagh
Sex Trafficking In The United States, Julia Kavanagh
Academic Festival
With the availability of enhanced resources for victims, increased training of healthcare, law enforcement, and the ordinary citizen to identify victims, and increased government awareness and effort, the halt of sex trafficking can occur. It is certainly difficult for the United States to combat sex trafficking in other countries, but they can continue and heighten their efforts on U.S. soil.

Patient Experience Journal
In 2019, we, as a group of patients and researchers, were invited to rethink how the executive board received and responded to patient stories at a specific NHS hospital trust in the UK. Through an iterative series of meetings, we were able to co-identify common concerns and together develop a distinctive narrative framework for effecting change by sharing patient experiences. This narrative framework is designed to help patients position themselves as ‘part of their healthcare team,’ emphasising roles and responsibilities between patients and health practitioners to compare ideals with reality in patient experiences. While the project was promising, several factors …

Patient Experience Journal
Heart failure is a complex chronic condition that results in multiple patient visits throughout the care continuum. Patient experience has associations with clinical outcomes. The purpose of this study was to examine patient experience among the underserved in a specialized interprofessional collaborative practice heart failure clinic. This prospective study utilized both qualitative and quantitative data to describe the patient experience within an interprofessional collaborative practice. Data were collected from patient experience surveys in 1128 patients seen in the Heart Failure Transitional Care Services for Adults (HRTSA) clinic between January 1, 2018, and December 31, 2021. Interprofessional collaborative practice surveys were …

A Return To The Roots: Mysticism And Psychodrama For Traumatized Populations: A Literature Review, Hyde Nichols
A Return To The Roots: Mysticism And Psychodrama For Traumatized Populations: A Literature Review, Hyde Nichols
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This paper is a literature review on the spiritual roots of psychodrama and how this can be utilized for traumatized populations. To support this hypothesis, I reviewed research done on post- traumatic stress disorder, spirituality and mysticism, as well as how psychodrama has been utilized for traumatized populations. J.L. Moreno’s original writings on psychodrama and its components and philosophy are utilized to situate mysticism and spirituality within the psychodramatic paradigm. All terms listed above are defined using research done within the United States, although Moreno began his career in Austria. To end the paper I discussed the importance of staying …

Mentally Ill Offenders And Recidivism Rates, Makenzie Ward
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
Background Information In Indiana, individuals with mental illnesses are disproportionately represented in the criminal justice system. Rather than being evaluated and treated in a proper facility, such as public psychiatric hospitals, offenders are referred to jails and prisons. According to Ray, Sapp, et.al. (2016), “Studies have found the rate of serious mental illness in jail and prison ranges from 14 to 16 percent, a rate three to five times greater than the proportion of serious mental illness in the greater population.” Mentally ill offenders that are not receiving adequate representation while incarcerated are not getting access to resources needed once …

Ecoracism And Antiracism In The Environmental Justice Movement And Their Place In Literature, Jill Amari
Ecoracism And Antiracism In The Environmental Justice Movement And Their Place In Literature, Jill Amari
Academic Festival
The term “ecoracism” has recently entered the fields of environmental activism, ecocriticism, and Critical Race Theory, though not much research on ecoracism has yet been done in the latter two fields. Antiracism, another modern concept, refers to the acknowledgment of racism and the promotion of racial equality. This paper explores how ecoracism and antiracism are important within the environmental justice movement, just as they are significant in literature. But how can looking at nature literature through an ecoracist and antiracist lens help future studies of these subjects, as well as future environmental and literary scholars? Scholars, like activists, have a …

A Comparative Analysis Of The United States' Prison System, Samantha Barone
Academic Festival
The prison systems of the United States, Norway, and Germany all employ different approaches, ranging from rehabilitation-focused to punishment-focused. The United States has a more punishment focused approach and has the highest incarceration rate in the world. Norway and Germany employ approaches that are more rooted in rehabilitation and work to help reintegrate inmates back into society. It would be beneficial for the United States to employ a more rehabilitative approach, in order to improve prisoner welfare and the economy.
Retaining First-Generation College Students: Faculty And Staff Perceptions, David Wolff
Retaining First-Generation College Students: Faculty And Staff Perceptions, David Wolff
Student Academic Conference
Research showed faculty-student interactions impact student engagement and was a primary factor to student retention (Kuh & Hu, 2001; Means & Pyne, 2017; Swecker et al., 2013; Tinto, 1987). The literature revealed while retention may be an issue for many institutions, there is a greater need to address retention specifically related to first-generation college students (FGCS). Students often seek advice from faculty and staff when faced with questions about their academic progress. Faculty and staff voices need to be collected regarding their perceptions of the effectiveness of the support systems used within an institution that promote retention for FGCS. This …
Career Interests, Sarah Stepanek, Megan Paul
Career Interests, Sarah Stepanek, Megan Paul
Umbrella Summaries
Career interests reflect individuals’ “trait-like preferences for activities, environments, and outcomes that motivate goal strivings and achievement” (Jones et al., 2020). Simply put, interests are a series of likes and dislikes that develop alongside one’s cognitive abilities and personality to shape human behavior (Jones et al., 2020; Low et al., 2005). Interests, thus, drive the amount of time and effort individuals spend acquiring knowledge and abilities within a certain domain and their pursuit of educational and career goals (Jones et al., 2020). According to vocational choice theory, individuals tend to seek work that aligns with their interests, and when this …

Building Student-Athlete Resilience On And Off The Field, Hannah Beatus
Building Student-Athlete Resilience On And Off The Field, Hannah Beatus
Masters Projects
Literature continues to demonstrate that student-athletes have a difficult time understanding how the skills they acquire as a student-athlete are transferrable to a non-sport environment. Student-athletes are exposed to messages about resilience early on in their athletic careers yet lack the understanding of how these skills are applicable to life outside of athletics. This project examines the aforementioned problem through an ecological systems theory lens. A workshop series designed to bring together student-athletes and coaches addresses this knowledge gap. It is hoped that by bringing together student-athletes and coaches that the development of resilience can be understood through a more …

Communication Sciences and Disorders Faculty Articles and Research
Purpose:
This viewpoint discusses a plausible framework to educate future speech-language pathologists (SLPs) as socially responsive practitioners who serve and advocate for the burgeoning vulnerable ethnogeriatric populations with neurogenic communication disorders.
Method:
We provide an overview of the demographic, epidemiological, and biopsychosocial context that supports the implementation of equity-based, population-grounded educational approaches for speech-language pathology services in ethnogeriatric neurorehabilitation caseloads and discuss a plausible perspective based on the educational social determinants of health (SDOH) framework by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.
Results:
The NASEM's three-domain SDOH educational perspective integrates education, community, and organization to create a self-reinforcing …
Corpus Expositum: Fat Studies As Critical Education Material For Student Affairs Professionals, Jenna J. Weatherwax
Corpus Expositum: Fat Studies As Critical Education Material For Student Affairs Professionals, Jenna J. Weatherwax
Masters Projects
As Fat Studies is an emerging field within higher education student affairs, research shows that the academic, social, and personal development of students who face fatphobia or discrimination is stunted (Brown, 2016; McHugh and Kasardo, 2012; Ramseyer Winter, 2017; Ropers-Huilman et al., 2016; Stevens, 2018; Wann, 2009). But, as colleges have historically and continuously ignored or erased the presence of fat students on their campuses, fat students are often left without support during their college experiences (Wann, 2009). Several factors impact fat college students and this project explores these factors, including the gendered aspect to fatphobia, the medicalization of fatness …
The Efficacy Of Implementing Financial Literacy Curriculum For College Students, Nyia M. Slade
The Efficacy Of Implementing Financial Literacy Curriculum For College Students, Nyia M. Slade
Masters Projects
As college students continue to rely on student loans, it is concerning that only a few interventions are in place to promote financial literacy. The federally required Loan Entrance Counseling and Loan Exit Counseling are ineffective, leaving students at a disadvantage. This project addresses this issue by examining the significance and effectiveness of financial literacy programs at postsecondary institutions. A more comprehensive approach is necessary by implementing a financial education course that covers loan processes, financial literacy, and overall financial wellness.

Limitations Of Telemedicine Vs. Face-To-Face Eye Examination In A Patient With New Headaches, Joseph Hallak, Od, Danielle Kalberer, Od
Optometric Clinical Practice
Background: During the emergence and rise of COVID-19, precaution directives and limitations on in-person eye examinations re-routed a significant portion of care to telemedicine and virtual modalities. While these technologies allowed for healthcare communications that otherwise could not occur during such trying times, there are major limitations to these sanctioned applications. This report will present a seemingly benign case that could have easily been re-routed from an in-person examination to a telemedicine version due to the patient’s seemingly “routine” vision complaints.
Case Report: A 50-year-old male patient contacted the eye clinic with a complaint of a minor, new, unexplained headache …

Profiles Of Resilience: Examining The Stories Of First Responder And Military Families, Kimberly Gomes
Symposium of Student Scholars
Background: Social support is a key factor in the development of resilience and is often derived from spouses and other family members. The current literature is limited in that there is no consensus about how resilience is defined and developed among individuals in high-stress occupations. Considering this, we aimed to interview military and first responder couples and examine how couples define resilience and navigate challenging experiences together.
Methods: We collected five distinct family stories wherein a member of the dyad was in a high-stress occupation (i.e., law enforcement and military personnel). All participants completed screeners to determine eligibility …
