Limitations Of Telemedicine Vs. Face-To-Face Eye Examination In A Patient With New Headaches, Joseph Hallak, Od, Danielle Kalberer, Od
Limitations Of Telemedicine Vs. Face-To-Face Eye Examination In A Patient With New Headaches, Joseph Hallak, Od, Danielle Kalberer, Od
Optometric Clinical Practice
Background: During the emergence and rise of COVID-19, precaution directives and limitations on in-person eye examinations re-routed a significant portion of care to telemedicine and virtual modalities. While these technologies allowed for healthcare communications that otherwise could not occur during such trying times, there are major limitations to these sanctioned applications. This report will present a seemingly benign case that could have easily been re-routed from an in-person examination to a telemedicine version due to the patient’s seemingly “routine” vision complaints.
Case Report: A 50-year-old male patient contacted the eye clinic with a complaint of a minor, new, unexplained headache …
Profiles Of Resilience: Examining The Stories Of First Responder And Military Families, Kimberly Gomes
Profiles Of Resilience: Examining The Stories Of First Responder And Military Families, Kimberly Gomes
Symposium of Student Scholars
Background: Social support is a key factor in the development of resilience and is often derived from spouses and other family members. The current literature is limited in that there is no consensus about how resilience is defined and developed among individuals in high-stress occupations. Considering this, we aimed to interview military and first responder couples and examine how couples define resilience and navigate challenging experiences together.
Methods: We collected five distinct family stories wherein a member of the dyad was in a high-stress occupation (i.e., law enforcement and military personnel). All participants completed screeners to determine eligibility …

Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences
The context of the Coronavirus pandemic has fundamentally changed the way we approach medical services. Beyond setting up new technological possibilities, it has propelled telemedicine to become a reality, bringing undeniable practical benefits. The questions that arise are both justified and worrying: can digitalization replace a direct interpersonal relationship that involves a physical examination, while preserving the quality of the medical act and the degree of patient satisfaction? Isn't there a risk that the digitization of the medical record will cancel out the deep human character of classical medicine that has evolved since the time of Hippocrates? Should the implementation …

Online Doctoral Candidate Preparedness For Practical Matters Associated With Their Dissertation Research: A Phenomenology, Grace Michele Baker
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to explore the dissertation research preparation and IRB-review experience of online doctoral candidates attending a medium-sized university in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. The theory that guided this research was Knowles’ theory of adult learning, which addresses how and why adults learn and why they choose to do so. The chosen design was transcendental phenomenology, which is used when the purpose of a study is to describe a phenomenon, and this is accomplished by collecting information about the phenomenon from a group of individuals who experienced it. The sample pool …

A Phenomenological Study Of The Lived Experiences Of Educators Who Seek To Recognize And Address Academic Stress In Secondary Students, Lisa M. Konieczna
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand the lived experience of educators who sought to recognize and address academic stress in secondary students. The theory guiding this study was Lazarus and Folkman’s transactional model of stress as it relates to the ways educators experience the appraisal, stress, and coping of students facing academic stress. Dweck’s growth mindset theory was applied to frame educators’ perspectives of student growth potential. The study participants consisted of 10 middle and high school educators from a suburban school district in Massachusetts. Participants were selected based on their years of experience in education and …
Sibling Placement In Adoption: The Adoptee Perspective, Kristen Richmond Phillips
Sibling Placement In Adoption: The Adoptee Perspective, Kristen Richmond Phillips
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Almost three-quarters of adoptees have known birth siblings, while a little more than one-quarter have birth siblings adopted by the same family (National Survey of Adoptive Parents, 2009). Many studies have been completed surrounding the issue of sibling placement in adoptions. However, no studies to this date have been published from the perspective of the adoptee. This study utilized interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) to explore the phenomenon of sibling placements from the perspective of adoptees. Purposive sampling was utilized to select eight participants who met the criteria of being over the age of 18, being a domestic adoptee, and having …

Accessibility Of On-Campus Food Pantries: A Comparative Review, Jayden Parrott
Honors Projects
This project explores ways in which food pantries across Ohio college campuses are accommodating for those with food restrictions such as food allergies, religious diets, or personal choice (vegan/vegetarian). Food insecurity is a widespread issue that affects many Americans. College students especially bear the burden of this issue. Food pantries are a common institution to combat food insecurity, and these work for many of the individuals that use them. Those with special dietary needs, however, may find more difficulty when accessing these resources. Having a food allergy or being on a religious or personal diet may impact how you can …

Viejo Period Architecture In The Casas Grandes Region Of Northern Mexico, Samuel J. Jensen
Viejo Period Architecture In The Casas Grandes Region Of Northern Mexico, Samuel J. Jensen
Theses and Dissertations
The Casas Grandes region of northern Mexico is an understudied, though important, part of the culture area that has come to be known as the Northwest/Southwest (NW/SW). What studies have been conducted in the Casas Grandes region have focused on the Medio Period (approximately 1200-1450 AD) and the large site of Paquimé. Only a small amount of research has been conducted on the preceding Viejo Period (approximately 700-1200 AD). In this thesis, I create a clearing house of published Viejo Period architectural features excavated in the Casas Grandes region. I also analyze those features to develop our understanding of the …

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
First responders are routinely exposed to traumatic events that can affect their mental health to the extent of suicidal ideation and suicide completion. The purpose of our study is to inform the comparability of predictors of suicidality across first responder types to elucidate the most efficacious targets for intervention and clinical intercession. Clients (N = 224) sought counseling services between 2015 and 2020 at a not-for-profit organization. We conducted a matched study with cases defined as those with suicidality at baseline and those without suicidality at baseline (controls). First responder types were law enforcement officers (LEOs), firefighters, and emergency …

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, online learning has become the innovation and an alternative virtual education adopted by universities, due to campus closures. The sudden adoption of the innovation without prior preparation and training causes the ineffective implementation of online learning in most institutions. Based on this description, insufficient information is available regarding the experiences of the student population, which are the most affected by online learning in higher education. Therefore, this study aims to explore the experiences of pre-service teachers regarding their numerous abilities to provide a good online learning program. Using a qualitative focus group study design, data …

Journal of the Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet
Background: Gaining informed consent is a critical step before any medical procedure, and before taking part in medical research. Cultural differences in concepts of health and healing, communication, language, and racism, can play a part in forming barriers to gaining informed consent for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, a lack of informed consent can worsen distrust and contribute to continuing health disparities. This protocol describes a study aimed at providing a better understanding of informed consent experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people undergoing heart surgery and participating in research. Journal of the Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men experience significantly higher rates of suicide, trauma, alcohol related deaths and unemployment than other Australian men. Despite significant levels of government intervention, rates of family violence, unemployment and incarceration continue to increase in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. As a subset of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population, there has been a lesser focus on how to meaningfully improve the wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men. This systematic review seeks to understand what interventions, programs and activities are successful in improving the wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men …

Since 1992, Ghana has implemented several initiatives and reforms such as the National Anti-Corruption Plan (NACAP), Right to Information (RTI) Act, Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO), and the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) with the goal of improving accountability while reducing corruption. These policies provide researchers with a lot of opportunities to examine how effective these programs have been as well as their impact on accountability. Hence, the present study seeks to accomplish three main objectives: 1) to explore the factors that facilitate vertical accountability; 2) to explore the limitations to vertical accountability; and 3) to investigate the …

Effects Of Cultural Matching And Identity Safety: An Examination Of Indigenous Student’S School Experiences, Tori Horton, Susie Michalek, Caitlin Carvalho
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
Cultural matching refers to the reflection of one’s own culture in day-to-day life, which is critical for nurturing one’s sense of acceptance and identity in the world (Rip et.al., 2020). Identity safety is when one’s social identity is welcomed and valued rather than viewed as a barrier to success The presence of cultural matching and identity safety is important in educational settings throughout childhood and adolescence, as both are crucial to students’ overall well-being and identity. Opportunities to express one’s culture in the classroom is essential for a sense of belonging and safety (Steele & Cohen-Vargas, 2013); however, Indigenous students …
