Evaluating The Impact Of Biosimilars In The Drug Market, Olivia Sitter Dec 2023

Evaluating The Impact Of Biosimilars In The Drug Market, Olivia Sitter

Theses

Drug pricing has increase to the point where many Americans are unable to afford prescriptions for both long- and short-term diseases. Within the last decade, U.S lawmakers have changed legislation so that biosimilars can be added into the drug market in hopes of creating affordable products. Biosimilars allow more options for consumers and add increased competition for manufactures which should decrease the overall price of the original biopharmaceutical the biosimilar is modeled after. In current research, the impact of biosimilars within the European Union has been investigated heavily, but the US approved biosimilars much later and there is less information …

Improving Intimate Partner Violence Screening In A Women’S Health Practice Through Implementation Of An Evidence-Based Screening Tool, Jasmine Weber

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects: College of Nursing

The purpose of this quality improvement project was to implement intimate partner violence screening in an outpatient women’s health clinic with no prior screening process in place. Current recommendations are to screen all reproductive age women for intimate partner violence 6 . During a three-month period 170 patients out of 260 eligible patients were screened using the HARK screening tool, 7 of those patients screened positive and were offered referrals to social work. While universal IPV screening was not achieved, a screening rate of 64% is a remarkable improvement from an apparent absence of screening prior to project implementation.

The Fall Of Public Opinion: The Tet Offensive, The Anti-War Movement, And The Media, 1963-1975, Taylor Ann Cusick Dec 2023

The Fall Of Public Opinion: The Tet Offensive, The Anti-War Movement, And The Media, 1963-1975, Taylor Ann Cusick

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

From 1963 to 1975, public opinion regarding the Vietnam War changed drastically. In the beginning, the public was largely on board with Americans going overseas to fight against the North Vietnamese military. Citizens felt the American military was doing what was necessary to secure democracy in a region where communism was spreading, and the public was not easily swayed by those who opposed the war. The media mirrored public opinion during the first years of the war. By 1968, support for the war declined dramatically, and the media’s portrayal of the conflict reversed. Newscasters began to argue that the risk …

Top Tips For Effective Use Of Periodontal Instruments In Primary Care, Morag Powell, Ruth Potterton, Ewen Mccoll Dec 2023

Top Tips For Effective Use Of Periodontal Instruments In Primary Care, Morag Powell, Ruth Potterton, Ewen Mccoll

Peninsula Dental School

Stabilisation of primary disease is a key pillar of successful treatment and in addition to managing caries, managing periodontal disease is a crucial component of a successful treatment plan. The recent European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) S3 level clinical practice guidelines (CPG)1 are evidence‐based clinical guidelines providing recommendations to treat periodontitis. Crucial to successful implementation of these recommendations is delivering behavioural change and non-surgical instrumentation. Often this is given passing attention with insufficient time allocated to behaviour change in treatment planning. Similarly, poorly maintained periodontal instruments and equipment not used to their full utility or design can lead to poorer …

Modeling Of Frontal Polymerization Of Carbon Fiber And Dicyclopentadiene Woven Composites With Stochastic Material Uncertainty, Ahmadreza Mohammad Sharifi, Dong-Jun Kwon, S. Z. H. Shah, Juhyeong Lee

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

A novel finite element modeling framework is proposed for simulating dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) frontal polymerization in carbon fiber (CF) woven composites. A mesoscale CF/DCPD representative volume element (RVE) model was developed with two triggering directions, resulting in out-of-plane and in-plane DCPD polymerization. The Arrhenius equation coupled with a modified Prout-Tompkins autocatalytic model was used to evaluate the dynamic DCPD polymerization process. The rate and degree of DCPD cure were calculated by the material property uncertainties of DCPD with and without random void inclusions (3% used as a reference in this work). The DCPD frontal polymerization in CF/DCPD composite was strongly influenced …

The Religious Landscape Of Uruguay In The Third Millennium: Present Piety As A Product Of The Past?, Brandon Kriplean Dec 2023

The Religious Landscape Of Uruguay In The Third Millennium: Present Piety As A Product Of The Past?, Brandon Kriplean

Honors Theses

Of all Latin American countries, Uruguay enjoys both the lowest percentage of Catholics and the highest percentage of religiously unaffiliated. The central aim of this thesis is to explore the extent to which historical secularization processes and laicidad are responsible for the low number of Catholics and the large number of religiously unaffiliated. With regards to the former, the historical evidence suggests that the small Catholic population is not a result of laicidad but is instead a product of internal issues within the Uruguayan Catholic Church. Part 1 of this thesis will explore the factors that have weakened the Uruguayan …

The Normative Requirement For Shared Decision Making (Sdm) In Healthcare Ethics, Margaret Nornor-Quadjie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Medicine and medical technology started to advance after World War II. During that period, the practice of medicine became technical. A lot began to happen in the biomedical world during the period after WWII that attracted comments, criticisms, and analyses from scholars. Perhaps, the 1947 Doctors’ Trial at the Nuremberg Tribunal and the Nuremberg Code may be said to be the defining moment for bioethics. These events eventually led to, in the United States, the passage of the National Research Act of 1974 that established the Institutional Review Board system and the National Commission for Protection of Human Subjects of …

Comparative Functional And Genomic Analysis Of Protein Targets Of Sexual Selection In Primates, Brianna Ports Dec 2023

Comparative Functional And Genomic Analysis Of Protein Targets Of Sexual Selection In Primates, Brianna Ports

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sexual selection is driven by the differential reproductive success of individuals, which is influenced by competition for mates and mate choice. In primates, this selective pressure has been attributed to the development of distinct anatomical, physiological, and behavioral characteristics. By employing comparative functional and genomic methodologies, this study aimed to assess the repercussions of primate sexual selection. To better understand the mechanisms driving sexually selected traits, an unbiased genome-wide analysis was used to associate rates of protein evolution with relative testes size and sexual size dimorphism. While previous research focused on the rapid evolution of male reproductive proteins in response …

"How Could Anyone But A Madman Have Thought This Sleeping Girl Dead?": L.T. Meade's Approach To The "Buried Alive" Literary Tradition In Support Of Death Certification Reform, Shelby Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

A March 1866 issue of The Lancet observes, "If a newspaper were in want of a startling story with which to enliven a dull copy in the 'off season,' it could not do better than select one with the heading "'Buried Alive'"("Premature Interment" 295). Stories of being buried alive gave readers of all backgrounds a thrill. However, the stories frustrated the medical and scientific communities who were quick to dismiss the threat of live burial as a possibility in a modern world. Drawing on the literary history of "buried alive" stories and medical knowledge surrounding death signs and catalepsy, this …

A Case Of Filgrastim-Induced Neutrophilic Dermatosis Of The Dorsal Hands In A Patient With Felty Syndrome, Theodore Rosen

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Neutrophilic dermatosis of the dorsal hands (NDDH) is a variant of Sweet syndrome that presents with erythematous bullae, papules/plaques, or pustules on the dorsal hands. It is most commonly associated with hematologic and solid organ malignancies, though cases of NDDH associated with inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatologic disorders, and medication exposure have also been described in the literature. Felty syndrome is a rare complication of long-standing rheumatoid arthritis characterized by neuropathy, splenomegaly, and neutropenia. Granulocyte colony stimulating factors (e.g., filgrastim) can be utilized to rescue the neutropenia observed in Felty syndrome, but this treatment may subsequently cause Sweet syndrome. Herein, we …
