‘Have They Talked About Us At All?’ The Moral Distress Of Healthcare Social Workers During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Qualitative Investigation In The State Of Texas, Sophia Fantus, Rebecca Cole, Lataya Hawkins, Priyanjali Chakraborty

School of Social Work Faculty Publications

Amid the ongoing pandemic, as overburdened and underfunded health systems are requiring health care social workers (HSWs) to assume responsibilities beyond their scope of practice, institutional constraints have undoubtedly heightened encounters of moral distress (MD). MD is the psychological disequilibrium that arises when institutional factors obligate an individual to carry out a task that violates their professional and/or personal ethics. Our qualitative study investigated HSWs’ (n = 43) MD in Texas during the 2019 COVID-19 pandemic. Findings from our study indicate that MD occurs across five levels: (i) patient care decisions; (ii) personal care decisions; (iii) team/unit decisions; (iv) …

A Reader Response Approach To Storytelling And Tabletop Games: The Player's Experience Of Dungeons And Dragons And Its Pedagogical Applications, Noah Hansen

English

Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) is a role-playing game (RPG) that has exploded in popularity since its conception in the 1970s. This paper aims to examine how D&D, and other RPGs like it, can be utilized within an academic setting by utilizing Reader Response theory. This theory, pioneered by theorists Louise Rosenblatt and Wolfgang Iser, would serve to measure the impact that D&D has on the players. Using an IRB approved study, this paper views the emotional impact, literary experience, and individual connections that participants make while playing D&D to show the worth that D&D has as a literary tool and …

Off The Beaten Warpath: Native Representation And Themes In Chris Claremont’S X-Men, Michael James Bittner Jan 2023

Off The Beaten Warpath: Native Representation And Themes In Chris Claremont’S X-Men, Michael James Bittner

English

“Off the Beaten Warpath”: Native Representation and Themes in Chris Claremont’s X-Men Chris Claremont, the long-time writer on several X-Men titles, used the opportunity to develop his own cast of original and highly diverse characters. Several of these new characters either were of Native heritage or became Native through the course of the narrative, and he created one of the first storylines focusing on Native themes, The Demon Bear Saga. The British-born Claremont uses Native themes throughout his tenure on the X-Men titles, sometimes adhering to, but often defying the conventions associated with Native American literature. Although not without some …

In this critical review, we examine how artificial intelligence (AI) technologies can be leveraged to mitigate human errors, thereby improving the safety and performance of operators in nuclear power plants (NPPs). First, we discuss the various causes of human errors in NPPs. Next, we examine the ways in which AI has been introduced to and incorporated into different types of operator support systems to mitigate these human errors. We specifically examine (1) operator support systems, including decision support …

Comparing Enacted And Perceived Parental Communication As Predictors Of Adolescents’ Emotion Regulation In Families With Harmful Versus Non-Harmful Parental Alcohol Use, Marie C. Haverfield, Jennifer A. Theiss Jan 2023

Comparing Enacted And Perceived Parental Communication As Predictors Of Adolescents’ Emotion Regulation In Families With Harmful Versus Non-Harmful Parental Alcohol Use, Marie C. Haverfield, Jennifer A. Theiss

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Emotion regulation is an important skill that adolescents typically learn through early interactions with their primary caregivers. Associations between parental communication and adolescent emotion regulation are well-documented however, it is unclear whether the parent’s actual communication behavior or adolescents’ perceptions of the parent’s behavior is a more robust predictor of emotion regulation outcomes. This study used Baumrind’s parenting styles typology as a theoretical foundation for examining parents’ enacted responsiveness and control and adolescents’ perceptions of their parent’s responsiveness and control during conversation as competing predictors of adolescents’ self-reported emotion regulation during two parent-child interactions. Sixty parent-adolescent dyads participated in an …

Dispersal And Coastal Geomorphology Limit Potential For Mangrove Range Expansion Under Climate Change, Jacqueline L. Raw, Tom Van Der Stocken, Dustin Carroll, Linda R. Harris, Anusha Rajkaran, Lara Van Niekerk, Janine B. Adams Jan 2023

Dispersal And Coastal Geomorphology Limit Potential For Mangrove Range Expansion Under Climate Change, Jacqueline L. Raw, Tom Van Der Stocken, Dustin Carroll, Linda R. Harris, Anusha Rajkaran, Lara Van Niekerk, Janine B. Adams

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Latitudinal range limits for mangroves on high-energy, wave-dominated coasts are controlled by geomorphological features and estuarine dynamics. Mangroves reach a southern global range limit along the South African coastline, but the distribution is patchy, with stands occurring in only 16% of the estuaries in the region. Yet, the persistence of forests planted >50 years ago beyond the natural distribution limit suggests that additional estuaries could support mangroves. Understanding regional drivers is necessary to inform global-scale estimates for how this important ecosystem is predicted to respond to climate change. Here, we combine species distribution modelling (MaxEnt), Lagrangian particle tracking using an …

Dynamic Density Functional Theory Of Multicomponent Cellular Membranes, L. G. Stanton, T. Oppelstrup, T. S. Carpenter, H. I. Ingólfsson, M. P. Surh, F. C. Lightstone, J. N. Glosli

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

We present a continuum model trained on molecular dynamics (MD) simulations for cellular membranes composed of an arbitrary number of lipid types. The model is constructed within the formalism of dynamic density functional theory and can be extended to include features such as the presence of proteins and membrane deformations. This framework represents a paradigm shift by enabling simulations that can access length scales on the order of microns and time scales on the order of seconds, all while maintaining near fidelity to the underlying MD models. These length and time scales are significant for accessing biological processes associated with …

The Small Intestinal Microbiome: Vibing With Intestinal Stem Cells, Victoria Poplaski, Faith Sawyer, Sarah E Blutt Jan 2023

The Small Intestinal Microbiome: Vibing With Intestinal Stem Cells, Victoria Poplaski, Faith Sawyer, Sarah E Blutt

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

The epithelial lining of the small intestine mediates its absorptive and secretory function and thus is a critical component of human health. Regeneration and renewal of the epithelium is the result of proliferation of intestinal stem cells (ISCs). Many cell types and molecular factors are known to regulate the ability of ISCs to proliferate, including adjacent neighboring epithelial cells and the underlying, supportive stromal cells. The microbiome resides in the lumen of the small intestine and is in close contact with the epithelium. Due to its proximity to ISCs, it has been hypothesized that species within the microbiome have the …

Background: Alcohol use can lead to child abuse and neglect even if the person using alcohol does not use heavily. Yet relatively few measures that reflect alcohol use are available at smaller geographic units. We assess whether the estimated level of total alcohol use per capita is related to measures of child abuse and neglect that include substantiated reports of maltreatment, total entries into foster care, and alcohol-related entries into foster care. Methods: Our sample consists of 326 Census block groups in Sacramento, California over three time points (978 space–time units). Administrative data for substantiations of child abuse and neglect …

Racial-Religious Decoupling In The University: Investigating Religious Students’ Perceptions Of Institutional Commitment To Diversity, Saugher Nojan Jan 2023

Racial-Religious Decoupling In The University: Investigating Religious Students’ Perceptions Of Institutional Commitment To Diversity, Saugher Nojan

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Muslims face racism based on their racialized religious identities, yet few address their experiences through critical race theory or campus racial climate. This paper addresses how religious students rate institutional commitments to campus diversity when considering racial and religious respect. This study examines undergraduate experience surveys across nine campuses and a Muslim student photovoice project through a mixed-methods design. I argue that racial and religious respect derived from interpersonal, discursive, and material sources influence Muslim students’ perceptions of institutional commitment to diversity. I introduce racial-religious decoupling to refer to how the separation of race and religion as distinct social experiences …

Community Focused Urban Renewal, Cody D. Verschelde Jan 2023

Community Focused Urban Renewal, Cody D. Verschelde

Architecture Theses

Cities across the nation continue to develop and grow, but in many, rundown industrially zoned lots tend to be left alone and become an eyesore. These sites need to be better utilized by the community living around them. There needs to be a way to develop and design a living community system integrated into the surrounding city and local community with the bonus of being semi-self-sufficient. Combining these new buildings into the existing context of the urban fabric is essential to any growing city. Urban redevelopment of a large site within an already growing city can help to influence further …

Very Short-Term Solar Power Forecasting Using A Frequency Incorporated Deep Learning Model, Hossein Panamtash, Shahrzad Mahdavi, Qun Zhou Sun, Guo Jun Qi, Hongrui Liu, Aleksandar Dimitrovski

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

This paper aims to forecast solar power in very short horizons to assist in real-time distribution system operations. Popular machine learning methods for time series forecasting are studied, including recurrent neural networks with Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM). Although LSTM networks perform well in different applications by accounting for long-term dependencies, they do not consider the frequency domain patterns, especially the low frequencies in the solar power data compared to the sampling frequency. The State Frequency Memory (SFM) model in this paper extends LSTM and adds multi-frequency components into memory states to reveal a variety of frequency patterns from the data …

How Can Land Use Planning And Architectural Design Be Combined To Create A New Form Of Residential Lake Shore Development?, Trenton Peterson Jan 2023

How Can Land Use Planning And Architectural Design Be Combined To Create A New Form Of Residential Lake Shore Development?, Trenton Peterson

Architecture Theses

This thesis envisions itself into the future to answer the questions of how we can allow numerous people to have the opportunity to acquire a residential waterfront property when the value of land continues to increase, and waterfront space proceeds to become more limited. With waterfront value increasing and space becoming more and more limited only a sparse amount of people get to experience the luxury of living on the water. I believe that a new area could be developed on multiple waterfront properties (lakes and oceans) that would allow additional waterfront views while allowing the value to be lower …

Distributed Cooperative Kalman Filter Constrained By Advection–Diffusion Equation For Mobile Sensor Networks, Ziqiao Zhang, Scott T. Mayberry, Wencen Wu, Fumin Zhang Jan 2023

Distributed Cooperative Kalman Filter Constrained By Advection–Diffusion Equation For Mobile Sensor Networks, Ziqiao Zhang, Scott T. Mayberry, Wencen Wu, Fumin Zhang

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

In this paper, a distributed cooperative filtering strategy for state estimation has been developed for mobile sensor networks in a spatial–temporal varying field modeled by the advection–diffusion equation. Sensors are organized into distributed cells that resemble a mesh grid covering a spatial area, and estimation of the field value and gradient information at each cell center is obtained by running a constrained cooperative Kalman filter while incorporating the sensor measurements and information from neighboring cells. Within each cell, the finite volume method is applied to discretize and approximate the advection–diffusion equation. These approximations build the weakly coupled relationships between neighboring …

Psychological Science Faculty Publications

The COVID-19 pandemic impacted the mental wellbeing of the entire globe. However, Latin American countries’ systemic and environmental challenges hindered the ability of many nations in the region to serve the mental health needs of its habitants. Compared to other mental health symptoms, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms (PTSS) were particularly higher among this geographical region. Nonetheless, there is scarcity of research identifying the unique symptom profile of PTSS. Given that the typology of PTSS is multidimensional and appears to be contingent on the type of stressor, this study (as part of larger international study) aimed to identify differences in PTSS …

Orphereal: Orphic Journey To Healing: A Therapeutic Design For The Anxious And Depressed, Sydney Suzanne Weigel Jan 2023

Orphereal: Orphic Journey To Healing: A Therapeutic Design For The Anxious And Depressed, Sydney Suzanne Weigel

Architecture Theses

Mental health has been rising for years, although since the pandemic that swept the world in 2020, it only seems to have been getting worse. When we hear somebody has broken their leg, has been diagnosed with a cancer or a terminal illness, why do we feel empathy towards the person? We feel called to deliver get well cards, and post about their misfortune and rally others to do the same; in the simplest terms, we support them on the path to heal. Mental health should be no different. The 2 most common mental illness diagnoses in America are depression …

Celebrating The Past While Creating The Present & Imagining The Future Through The Hamline Midway Library, Hailey O'Connor Jan 2023

Celebrating The Past While Creating The Present & Imagining The Future Through The Hamline Midway Library, Hailey O'Connor

Architecture Theses

Architecture is more than four walls and a roof. It becomes a beacon of a community. As a country the United States is relatively young, hence the architecture is not as historic as other countries. As a whole, there seems to be a pattern that if the building is not working, tearing it down and starting over is the only option. Throughout this thesis there will be research on why preserving these historic buildings is essential and why they are important to the community surrounding the building. The Hamline Midway Library is only one example of buildings being torn down …

Breaking Barriers By Preserving The Future: Fergus Falls Kirkbride, Deanna Hurley

Architecture Theses

The thought came to me over the Summer when I was visiting my hometown. There is a historical building called the Regional Treatment Center (RTC), and over the years, I have seen many attempts to repurpose it, but all have failed. We have visitors come from across the country and even other continents to see the RTC, and the city is losing out on potential profit for the community by not utilizing the RTC. Now, the city wants to tear the whole structure down (except the main tower), costing over 9 million dollars. Along with the great cost, loss of …

Adaptive Thinking, Tanner Trosen

Architecture Theses

The LEED Green Building Rating System was founded in 1993 and officially launched in 1998. Since then LEED’s goal has been to certify buildings that save money, improve efficiency, lower carbon emissions and create healthier places for people. LEED has done a very good job at producing the former. LEED certified buildings are very environmentally friendly, efficient, and save money day to day. Unfortunately when it comes to healthier places for people, the ball gets dropped. The WELL Building Standard bridges this gap. WELL buildings seek to improve the nutrition, fitness, mood, sleep, comfort, and performance of its occupants. This …

Inclusivity In Public Space: Architecture And The Disabled Body, Grace A. Dietz Jan 2023

Inclusivity In Public Space: Architecture And The Disabled Body, Grace A. Dietz

Architecture Theses

People with disabilities are living in a world that simply was not built for them and it creates a lot of unnecessary struggle and bias because of that. Public spaces are especially discriminatory towards the disabled body, and yet the public world as it exists today is also more and more discriminatory towards every single one of our bodies because of reductive design strategies that place more emphasis on evolving technology such as cars over our bodily experience of design and space. The only way we can interact with the world is through our bodies. Our bodies move us through …

A Methodology Of Calculating The Carbon Footprint Of A Building, Kaitlyn Kane

Architecture Theses

Environmentalism and conservation are two things that are very important to me. It is so enjoyable to be in a place where so little others have been. Walking through the woods where no human has adapted is precious. Although these areas are perfect, there must also be space for us to adapt and inhabit, but we must be mindful of the existing environment while doing so. It is well known that our climate has been significantly impacted by climate change. Carbon dioxide emissions is the leading driver of the global climate change. It is talked about worldwide how we as …
