Maui Wildfires: A Case Study In Local Government Crisis Communication Response, Joshua A. Voda
Student Theses and Dissertations
When wildfires swept through the island of Maui in Hawai‘i in August 2023, the communities of Olinda, Kula and especially Lahaina were devastated. Thousands of people were displaced, and nearly 100 people were lost. Just like the speed at which the fiery winds consumed these towns, accusations of emergency mismanagement and a host of misinformation spread by word of mouth and online. The primary local government authority for these communities is the County of Maui, currently led by Mayor Richard Bissen. This case study examines the first month of communication from the County of Maui to the affected communities via …

Inspired by the author's experience as the sole Muslim woman in a company of over 100 employees, the capstone project addresses the observed lack of prioritization for minority inclusion in the workplace. The capstone project outlined aims to address this issue by developing a cultural sensitivity and inclusion workshop that surpasses superficial efforts and encourages participants to internally reflect on their daily workplace interactions. The workshop, designed with an experiential approach lasting 1.5-2 hours, seeks to foster practical knowledge and instigate changes towards a more inclusive, equitable, and diverse working environment. Emphasizing increased awareness, engagement in reflective and collaborative activities, …

Let’S Influence That Attitude Before It’S Formed: Inoculation Against Reactance To Promote Dei Training, Roger Gans, Mengqi Monica Zhan
SAGE Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive
Despite annual investments of $8 billion by U.S. organizations on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) training, many DEI programs are derailed by resistance from members whose attitudes and behaviors the programs are intended to address. The current study tested the effectiveness of a narrative-based inoculation strategy designed to mitigate resistance attributable to psychological reactance. Participants (N = 273) were randomly exposed to either a single-message assignment-to-DEI-training notification or a dual-message inoculation condition in which they received a pro-DEI-training message before receiving the assignment-to-DEI-training notification. The inoculation condition produced lower levels of reactance and greater positive attitude change in favor …

Navigating Repatriation: Factors Influencing Turnover Intentions Of Self-Initiated Repatriates In Emerging Economies, Nga T. T. Ho, Hung T. Hoang, Pi Shen Seet, Janice Jones
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Purpose: The repatriation process often involves challenging and unexpected readjustment issues, leading to high turnover amongst repatriates. However, research has focussed on the re-entry decisions and experiences of company-assigned (CA) repatriates, whilst studies on self-initiated expatriates (SIEs) that repatriate back to their home countries (i.e. self-initiated repatriates (SIRs)) are limited, particularly in emerging transition economies. This study develops and tests a model to explain the factors influencing professional SIRs' turnover intentions and how repatriation readjustment affects their intentions in Vietnam. Design/methodology/approach: The data was collected from 445 Vietnamese professional SIRs who worked and/or studied for extended periods overseas and subsequently …

Weakness Is The New Strength: How Vulnerability Makes Leaders Stronger, Scott Dick
Transform
Weakness is the new strength: How vulnerability makes leaders stronger is the result from the meta-analysis of five phenomenological studies designed to generate a theory that explains how exemplar leaders from five different fields used “soft-skills” and four domains of behavior to create mutual shared knowledge, resolve conflict and transform relationships to produce breakthrough results. The four domains of behavior are communication, collaboration, ethics, and emotional intelligence. The sample was composed of 75 exemplar leaders from five different professional fields and included an analysis of over 1,300 pages of interview transcripts as the main data source for the study. The …

Letter From The Editor In Chief, Jeffrey Lee
Transform
The TRANSFORM journal is a space for leaders, mentors, researchers, and practitioners of transformational leadership to be seen, heard, and valued; it is a place for making connections. Relationship-building is central to transformational leadership at all levels of an organization; this fundamental truth is a trending topic in literature. Otherwise, however, leadership can be an isolating experience.
As an ethnographer, I believe the best way to launch an academic, peer-reviewed journal is to do what I do best: storytelling. I want to share my thoughts on transformational leadership through a story in the form of a letter to my younger …

The COVID-19 pandemic brought global disruptions to the way universities operate. Online learning abruptly took priority, as the physical campuses in Australian universities became deserted. Staff had to instantly adapt to major changes in work practices, whilst continuing to support students’ engagement and maintain quality teaching and learning. This article discusses how change fatigue during the pandemic impacted the wellbeing of staff working in the enabling education sector. As staff and student wellbeing is interdependent, gaining a better understanding of the influences on staff wellbeing in the post-pandemic era is worth exploring in the context of discussions around student wellbeing …

Improving Access To Early Interventions For Prediabetic Patients, Kimberleigh M. Telling
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Approximately 88 million Americans, or nearly one-third of the population, have prediabetes. This condition has a high rate of progression to type 2 diabetes, reaching 70%. However, early identification, diagnosis, and participation in lifestyle interventions can effectively reduce the risk and promote euglycemia. Regrettably, 85% of those with prediabetes are unaware. The goal of this quantitative quality improvement project was to enhance the use of the prediabetes diagnosis code by primary care providers, who play a crucial role in preventing type 2 diabetes. The purpose was to improve access to early intervention for individuals with prediabetes, following the guidelines of …

A Phenomenological Exploration Of The Leadership Experiences Of School Leaders During Covid-19 Changes, Margaret H. Johnson
A Phenomenological Exploration Of The Leadership Experiences Of School Leaders During Covid-19 Changes, Margaret H. Johnson
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this qualitative, transcendental phenomenological study was to explore the leadership experiences of school leaders during the COVID-19 pandemic. The theory guiding this study was Hersey and Blanchard’s situational leadership theory as it focuses on the idea that leadership is contingent and can be adjusted based upon the factors of a situation. The situational leadership theory can help to explain the adjustments in leadership practices that could be made when the employee’s task changes, or their relationship needs change. The relationship between the situational leadership theory and this study was the change in faculty task and setting situations …

Improving Strategic Management Planning In Non-Profit Organizations: Federally Qualified Health Centers, Esther Taylor
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This qualitative multiple case study included the challenges non-profits, specifically Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) leaders face when utilizing ineffective methods for strategic planning and management. The researcher conducted 21 semistructured interviews with critical decision makers involving executive, senior, and middle managers at three health centers in Texas to obtain a better understanding of their perspective on strategic planning and management. The results of the findings revealed that FQHC leaders face many barriers that limit their success or expansion of the mission, organizational growth, financial stability, and strategic alliances. However, the results demonstrated that leaders from non-profits, particularly FQHCs can …

Culturally Responsive Leadership: The Lived Experiences Of Mid-Level Administrators In Public Education Navigating Competing Priorities, Ann Marie Bucco
Theses & Dissertations
The increasing diversity within the U.S. education system necessitates the presence of influential leaders capable of fostering Cultural Responsiveness (CR) through their leadership strategies. Previous research has underscored the critical significance of implementing CR in achieving effective outcomes for students’ needs in today’s evolving educational environment. Nonetheless, a gap exists in understanding middle-level leaders' challenges when striving to implement CR approaches in a bureaucratic system. This qualitative phenomenological study sought to delve into the real-life experiences of middle-level district curriculum administrators operating within a bureaucratic structure. The study examines middle-level district curriculum administrators’ descriptions of roles, experiences, communication and advocacy, …
