The Fetal Maternal Conflict: One Body, Two Considerations, Anna Ludkiewicz Apr 2023

The Fetal Maternal Conflict: One Body, Two Considerations, Anna Ludkiewicz

Academic Festival

The scenario surrounding a pregnant woman provides a situation in which the rights of both mother and fetus must be considered. Conflict arises when a mother’s decision regarding her pregnancy may cause harm to the fetus. Controversy in the fetalmaternal conflict appears in circumstances regarding a woman’s personal health care choices, lifestyle and behaviors, and occupational situation (Flagler et al. 1997). One perspective on this issue is that a pregnant woman has reproductive rights and should maintain autonomy over her own body. The opposing perspective believes that a woman’s reproductive rights do not outweigh the fetus’s right to live. This …

The Overlooked Aspect Of The Psychological And Physiological Effect Of Injuries On The Rehabilitation Process, Andrew Tolfa Apr 2023

The Overlooked Aspect Of The Psychological And Physiological Effect Of Injuries On The Rehabilitation Process, Andrew Tolfa

Academic Festival

The mind and body are closely connected. Although the amount of research is limited involving this topic, exercise science is advancing rapidly, and a clearer connection is beginning to become apparent. Until the 1960s, exercise science as a field was largely unprecedented. Does psychology have a bigger influence on clinical outcomes than we think? Are there interactions between the physiology of recovery and the thought process? Should physical therapists be required to have some sort of degree or education in psychology to provide the most holistic care? The answers to these questions remain in the air, but with the research …

Use Of Resources By Adult Karner Blue Butterflies (Lycaeides Melissa Samuelis) In Michigan: Comparisons Of Nectar Selections On Native And Non-Native Species, Afafia Herweyer

Masters Projects

Abstract

The endangered Karner blue butterfly (Lycaeides melissa samuelis) is at risk due to the decline of oak barrens and dry sand prairies, the butterfly’s sole habitat. Survival depends on effective conservation of remaining habitat and creation of new viable habitats. Successful management must consider resource needs for both larval and adult stages. Information on adult nectar requirements is limited (Grundel et al. 2000, Pickens & Root 2008). Sufficient nectar increases lifespan and fecundity of butterflies (Murphy et al. 1983, Hill & Pierce 1989, Fischer & Fielder 2001), and deters emigration. Encroachment of non-native nectar species into butterfly habitat warrants …

This project explores the recent research regarding access to mental health services among collegiate student-athletes and how removing those barriers can encourage this population …

Superabsorbent Polymer Use In Rangeland Restoration, Shannon V. Nelson Apr 2023

Superabsorbent Polymer Use In Rangeland Restoration, Shannon V. Nelson

Theses and Dissertations

Soil moisture deficits often hinder rangeland revegetation efforts. Due to sheer numbers and germination timing, invasive annual species can easily outcompete those of desired seeded species for resources, including water. One way to increase seedling establishment may be to increase the amount of water available to seeded species. Superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) can absorb and release hundreds of times their weight in water and slowly release it. Concentrated SAP bands at or near seedling rooting depth may act as a soil water reservoir for germinating seedlings and increase rangeland seedling establishment. The objective of these studies was to evaluate the effect …
