A Comparative Study Of Specific Enthalpy Of Aromatic Hydrocarbons With Simple Carbohydrates, Kohl D. Kervin, Subha Pratihar

ATU Scholars Symposium

Calorimetry is an aspect of chemistry primarily focused on determining the enthalpy of reactions (∆Hrxn). In the bomb calorimetry technique, the heat of combustion of chemical compounds can be measured experimentally. From this data and the application of Hess’s Law, ∆the Hrxn of several chemical reactions can be determined. The technique of bomb calorimetry can be applied to food, fuels, pharmaceuticals, and many other fields. The objective of the present project is to determine the specific enthalpy of various simple carbohydrates (naturally occurring sugars) through bomb calorimetry and compare it with that of aromatic hydrocarbons.

By performing benzoic acid standardization …

Chemometrics: A Valuable Tool For Deriving Information From Complex Data Sets, James Harnly Apr 2023

Chemometrics: A Valuable Tool For Deriving Information From Complex Data Sets, James Harnly

Oxford ICSB

Chemometrics is a subset of machine learning which has been defined a set of advanced mathematical and statistical methods for the analysis of data. This defines many methods such as chemometrics, artificial neuro networks, support vector machines, and rule building expert systems. Chemometrics allows us to draw information from multivariate raw data, i.e., to discover patterns, causes of the patterns, and, with appropriate algorithms, the variance associated with the patterns. The most commonly used forms of chemometrics are principal components analysis (PCA for modeling) and partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA for classification), unsupervised and supervised methods, respectively. In its simplest …

Creatine supplementation is an effective ergogenic aid to augment resistance training and improve intense, short duration, intermittent performance. The effects on endurance performance are less known. The purpose of this brief narrative review is to discuss the potential mechanisms of how creatine can affect endurance performance, defined as large muscle mass activities that are cyclical in nature and are >~3 min in duration, and to highlight specific nuances within the literature. Mechanistically, creatine supplementation elevates skeletal muscle phosphocreatine (PCr) stores facilitating a greater capacity to rapidly resynthesize ATP and buffer hydrogen ion accumulation. When co-ingested with carbohydrates, creatine enhances glycogen …

Cunningham, Sabah Haq, Daniel N. Villageliú, Christi Christi Ellis, Niaz Bahar Chowdhury, Amanda E. Ramer-Tait, Jeff Price, Daren L. Knoell

Food for Health: Publications

Intestinal dysbiosis increases susceptibility to infection through the alteration of metabolic profiles, which increases morbidity. Zinc (Zn) homeostasis in mammals is tightly regulated by 24 Zn transporters. ZIP8 is unique in that it is required by myeloid cells to maintain proper host defense against bacterial pneumonia. In addition, a frequently occurring ZIP8 defective variant (SLC39A8 rs13107325) is strongly associated with inflammation-based disorders and bacterial infection. In this study, we developed a novel model to study the effects of ZIP8-mediated intestinal dysbiosis on pulmonary host defense independent of the genetic effects. Cecal microbial communities from a myeloid-specific Zip8 knockout mouse …
