The Impact Of Somali Parental Involvement On Elementary Education In Minnesota: Opportunities And Challenges, Abdiqani Abdullahi Elmi
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Abstract This qualitative study examines the challenges faced by Somali-American parents in Minnesota regarding involvement in their children's education, particularly during elementary school. The elementary level is a critical stage for students' learning and a foundational pillar for both academic development and social integration, making parental involvement during this stage especially important. However, immigrant families, specifically Somali-Americans, face significant challenges that impede their ability to participate actively in their children's educational journey. This qualitative phenomenological research investigated barriers that might stem from limited formal education, low English proficiency, cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic challenges. The methodology used in this research is …
An Integrated Evaluation Of Trace Mineral Status, Regional Variation, And Supplementation Effects On Circulating Mineral And Reproductive Performance In American Plains Bison, Bailey M. Rodriguez
An Integrated Evaluation Of Trace Mineral Status, Regional Variation, And Supplementation Effects On Circulating Mineral And Reproductive Performance In American Plains Bison, Bailey M. Rodriguez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The continued expansion of the American Plains Bison (Bison bison) industry has increased the need for science-based nutritional recommendations tailored specifically to the species, due to limited species-specific research. Because trace minerals influence immune function, growth, and reproductive performance, establishing baseline mineral status and evaluating responses to supplementation are critical for advancing bison production and conservation efforts. This thesis integrates two complementary investigations to evaluate trace mineral status in American Plains bison at both regional and herd management levels. First, a herd level comparison evaluated the influence of differing mineral supplementation strategies on circulating mineral concentrations, herd performance, and reproductive …

Winter-Feeding High Forage Vs. High Concentrate Diets To Beef Cows: Effects On Placental Transcriptomics, Lactation Capacity, And Enteric Methane Emissions, Megan Ann Wehrbein
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Nutritional management and lactation performance are critical factors influencing productivity in cattle. This research includes two complementary studies. The first study was a meta-analysis to develop a lactation curve for Bos taurus cattle in North America using data from machine or hand milked cows. Data from 7 studies were used resulting in 1340 cow-day observations. Milk yield was analyzed by parity (primiparous or multiparous) and feeding management (non-nutrient restricted or nutrient restricted), revealing that primiparous cattle peaked earlier and at lower yields than multiparous cattle, and nutrient restriction reduced peak milk yield. Overall, Bos taurus cattle followed lactation trends similar …
Evaluating Methodologies For Estimating Enteric Emissions And Modeling Greenfeed Technology Utilization In Extensive Beef And Bison Grazing Systems, Aletta Laura Husmann
Evaluating Methodologies For Estimating Enteric Emissions And Modeling Greenfeed Technology Utilization In Extensive Beef And Bison Grazing Systems, Aletta Laura Husmann
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from grazing ruminants represent a significant component of U.S. agricultural emissions. However, enteric methane (CH4) from cow– calf systems on extensive rangelands pose substantial measurement and management challenges. The Northern Great Plains (NGP) supports nearly one-quarter of the U.S. beef cow population, yet regionally representative, herd-level enteric emission data from commercial ranches remain limited. This thesis integrates empirical field measurements with modeling approaches to evaluate the feasibility of quantifying enteric emissions on extensive rangelands and to examine system-level drivers influencing data yield, costs, and operational performance. Enteric methane and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions were measured from …
Stronger Starts: Advancing Maternal And Infant Health In Breathitt County, Kentucky, Madisyn Smith
Stronger Starts: Advancing Maternal And Infant Health In Breathitt County, Kentucky, Madisyn Smith
Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
Maternal and infant health outcomes remain significantly poorer in rural Appalachian communities, where structural and socioeconomic barriers limit access to timely and comprehensive care. Kentucky reports elevated rates of preterm birth and infant mortality, with counties such as Breathitt County facing challenges including limited obstetric services, transportation barriers, and high poverty rates. These factors contribute to delayed prenatal care, fragmented services, and increased risk of adverse outcomes.
The Stronger Starts Initiative is an evidence-informed public health program designed to improve maternal and infant health outcomes through a coordinated, multi-level approach. The program integrates nurse-led home visiting, telehealth obstetric consultations, community-based …
Promoting Maternal And Infant Health In Franklin County, Ky: A Community-Based Physical Activity And Education Intervention, Subin Kim
Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
Maternal and infant health outcomes are key indicators of population health, yet persistent disparities exist in rural communities across the United States. In Kentucky, Franklin County reflects this pattern, with concerning maternal and infant health indicators despite relatively favorable socioeconomic conditions. Identified challenges include elevated rates of poor physical and mental health days, high drug overdose mortality, provider shortages, and ongoing reproductive health concerns such as tobacco use during pregnancy and increased infant mortality associated with elevated maternal body mass index.
To address these gaps, a three-pronged, community-based prenatal and postpartum physical activity and education program is proposed. The program …

Momentum For Healthy Births-Hardin County, Ky, Brittany R. Jackson
Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
Maternal and infant health disparities in Hardin County, Kentucky, reflect persistent gaps in timely access to care, particularly among rural and underserved populations. Structural barriers, including transportation limitations and unmet social needs, contribute to delayed prenatal care initiation and low postpartum follow-up, increasing the risk of adverse outcomes. This capstone project proposes the MOMentum (Maternal Outreach and Monitoring for Mothers) Program, an integrated care model designed to strengthen access, improve care coordination, and enhance continuity across the prenatal and postpartum period.
The program combines a Community Health Worker (CHW)-led navigation model with enhanced postpartum care supported by telehealth services and …

Background: Short sleep and formula feeding during infancy are associated with increased risk of childhood obesity. Feeding practices and sleep arrangements vary during infancy and may also be dynamic, yet their impact on infant night sleep duration remains unclear. Understanding these relationships is crucial for formulating recommendations to support breastfeeding and address sleep concerns. Objective: We examined the association between feeding mode and parent-reported infant night sleep duration during the first postnatal year, while additionally evaluating night-weaning and bedsharing as contextual sleep-related practices. Methods: Infants in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area (n = 193) were followed up at 3, 8, 13, …
Place-Branding In The Japanese Agricultural Industry: A Discourse Analysis Of National, Prefectural, Municipal, And Producer Perspectives, Miyu L. Owada
Pomona Senior Theses
This essay is a case study of place-based agricultural branding in Japan, particularly in the sub-urban context of Mitaka City, Tokyo. Shifting the focus from rural revitalization models typically studied in this field, this study brings sub-urban landscapes into the conversation. Although existing studies assume a top-down policy is implemented for agricultural branding in Japan, the study assesses to what extent this structure holds true for the Mitaka context, comparing narratives across four tiers: the national Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (MAFF), the prefectural Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG), the municipal Mitaka City and Japan Agricultural Cooperatives (JA) Tokyo Musashi …
Feral Horses And Native Ungulates: Evaluating The Potential For Competition In Predator–Prey Communities Of Alberta’S Upper Foothills, Birch Gano
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Feral herbivores are expanding in range and numbers globally, yet their community-level effects in ecosystems are poorly resolved. We evaluated whether feral horses reshape predator–prey–vegetation dynamics in Alberta’s Upper Foothills, Canada, through two pathways; i) potential exploitative competition for forage and ii) apparent competition via shared predators. We combined fecal DNA metabarcoding with remote wildlife cameras to quantify diets, spatiotemporal co-occurrence, and the role of horses in carnivore diet. We analyzed 241 ungulate scats (feral horses, elk, bighorn sheep, cattle, moose, and deer), 96 combined camera-years at 23 sites, and 190 carnivore scats (wolves, cougars, coyotes, bears) from 2023–2025. The …
From Environment To Population Dynamics: Integrating Physiology, Morphology, And Demography In A Montane Migratory Bird, Beverly Sunshine Domschot
From Environment To Population Dynamics: Integrating Physiology, Morphology, And Demography In A Montane Migratory Bird, Beverly Sunshine Domschot
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Environmental variation shapes population dynamics by influencing how individuals acquire and allocate resources. However, the pathways linking environmental conditions to population-level outcomes remain difficult to resolve because they operate across multiple levels of biological organization. Traits such as physiology and morphology mediate these relationships by shaping how individuals respond to challenges and convert resources into survival and reproduction. Physiological traits can change rapidly in response to short-term conditions, whereas morphological traits reflect longer-term processes related to performance and energy balance. Despite their complementary roles, these traits are typically studied in isolation, limiting our ability to understand how environmental conditions propagate …
Embodied Women’S Health In The Pacific: Biocultural Pathways Of Hormones, Immunity, And Reproduction, Courtney Callidora Manthey
Embodied Women’S Health In The Pacific: Biocultural Pathways Of Hormones, Immunity, And Reproduction, Courtney Callidora Manthey
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This dissertation examines women’s health through a biocultural framework that integrates biological anthropology, medical anthropology, and public health, with a central focus on the Pacific. It advances embodiment theory as a unifying approach for understanding how lived experience becomes biologically incorporated across the life course, shaping reproductive, endocrine, and immune outcomes. Grounded in research in Sāmoa and situated within broader comparative contexts in the United States and Amazonian populations, this work argues that women’s health cannot be fully understood through biomedical indicators alone, but must instead be interpreted within historically, culturally, and environmentally embedded Pacific contexts and beyond. The dissertation …
Evolution Of A Nitrogen-Fixing Endosymbiont And Integration With Its Diatom Host, Heidi Elizabeth Abresch
Evolution Of A Nitrogen-Fixing Endosymbiont And Integration With Its Diatom Host, Heidi Elizabeth Abresch
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Endosymbiosis, where one cell lives inside of a different cell, is ubiquitous in nature and has enormous impacts on the ecology and evolution of both the host and the endosymbiont [1, 2]. These relationships exist along a continuum ranging from facultative—where both partners are able to live independently—to completely obligate—where partners can only survive in the presence of the other. The most famous examples being the chloroplast and mitochondrion [3]. After hundreds of millions or even billions of years of coevolution, highly-integrated endosymbionts are coordinated with the host on the genetic, metabolic, and cellular levels, but we do not understand …
Evolutionary Genetics Of Wolbachia Density Variation And Effects On Host Fitness, John Paul Statz
Evolutionary Genetics Of Wolbachia Density Variation And Effects On Host Fitness, John Paul Statz
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Symbiotic interactions are widespread across the tree of life, and many insects associate with vertically transmitted intracellular bacteria whose fitness is tied to host reproduction. Because these endosymbionts transmit through the maternal line, selection often favors traits that increase the production and success of transmitting females. Over time, endosymbionts can evolve functions such as nutrient provisioning, defense against predators and pathogens, and contributions to environmental stress tolerance, thereby shaping host ecology and evolution. Yet these effects depend critically on the abundance and localization of endosymbionts within host tissues. This dissertation examines these processes in Wolbachia, the most common known animal …
The Evolution Of Ritual Violence And Identity At Paquimé, Lacy Jaide Hazelwood
The Evolution Of Ritual Violence And Identity At Paquimé, Lacy Jaide Hazelwood
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The prehistoric site of Paquimé, located in the Casas Grandes region of northern Mexico, was a major regional center characterized by its complex sociopolitical organization, distinctive architecture, and evidence of ritualized behavior. Previous research has documented skeletal trauma and processing patterns consistent with ritual violence within the Paquimé skeletal assemblage, including human sacrifice and cannibalism. However, questions remain regarding the identities of these individuals and the reasoning behind their selection for targeted violence by the community. Did an individual’s age, biological sex, kinship affiliations, and/or migrant status predispose them to these ritually violent acts? To address these gaps, this dissertation …

A Wellness Approach To Aging, Retirement, And Suicide Risk: Gerontological Considerations, Seth T. Robinson, Derek J. Lee
Adultspan Journal
Suicide risk in older adulthood represents complex interactions between developmental transitions; changing social contexts; and interactions between ecological context and individual perceptions of belongingness, burdensomeness, and hope. This paper presents an integrative, developmentally appropriate framework for conceptualizing and addressing suicide risk in older adulthood, which is grounded in the Indivisible Self model of wellness. Drawing on current empirical knowledge of wellness, suicidality, and older adulthood, this paper presents risk and protective factors associated with older adulthood through life transitions, changing social contexts, and other relevant factors. We present a novel integration of suicide intervention, wellness, and holistic care as a suitable …

Full-Time Career Retirement: A Black Man’S Narrative Of Survival And Protecting His Peace, Demetrius Cofield, Amaya Rakes
Adultspan Journal
Full-time career retirement is a major developmental transition that is often examined through race-neutral frameworks, leaving Black men’s experiences underexplored in counseling and aging scholarship. This perspective article centers the narrative of a retired Black man veteran who transitioned into full-time career retirement after decades of state employment. Using a narrative interview approach, this manuscript examines the factors that shaped his retirement decision and adjustment to later adulthood. The interview frames retirement as a process of self-preservation, continuity, and intentional living rather than identity loss or disengagement. Findings highlight the role of disciplined wellness practices and selective disengagement in promoting …

The Coral Microbiome Under Climate Change: Shifting Symbiotic Interactions, Katherine E. Parker, Kate M. Quigley
The Coral Microbiome Under Climate Change: Shifting Symbiotic Interactions, Katherine E. Parker, Kate M. Quigley
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Host–microbe symbioses are central to organismal health, yet these complex partnerships are often strongly shaped by the environment. Climate change is increasingly altering environmental conditions, disrupting the balance of host–microbe interactions and pushing them along a continuum from mutualism (both partners benefit) toward parasitism (one partner gains at the other’s expense). Reef-building corals provide a clear example of this vulnerability, as the coral holobiont, an ecological unit comprising diverse photosynthetic algal symbionts (Symbiodiniaceae) and other microbial partners, depends largely on these mutualistic interactions for nutrition, immunity, and stress tolerance. Increasingly, evidence suggests that under heat stress, the algal symbionts retain …

Condensed aromatic nitrogen (ConAN) is commonly found in soil and aquatic environments. ConAN is broadly viewed by the biogeochemistry community as a combustion-derived product leading to its frequent designation as pyrogenic “black” nitrogen. Here, we provide evidence that ConAN can also form through nonpyrogenic pathways. In an experiment simulating biomass oxidation, pine wood boards assembled with iron nails were exposed to 12 years of natural environmental conditions. Nitrogen concentrations increased from 0.2 to 1.2 wt % with increasing proximity to the nail. Ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry showed enrichment of nitrogen-containing compounds within the lignin and condensed aromatic domains. X-ray spectroscopic …
Silent Struggles: The Hidden Burden Of Depression Among Black Single Mothers In Ghana, Sonja Brown
Silent Struggles: The Hidden Burden Of Depression Among Black Single Mothers In Ghana, Sonja Brown
Doctor of Ministry
Reflections Through the Single Mothers of the Bible examines depression among Black single mothers in Ghana as an overlooked yet urgent mental, physical, economic, social, and Spiritual concern, highlighting the need for integrated Faith-based and community-centered responses. While global attention to maternal mental health has increased, the lived experiences of Black single mothers, particularly within faith-shaped, patriarchal, and economically constrained Ghanaian contexts, remain underrepresented in scholarly research, theological discourse, and public policy. This gap presents a problem and an opportunity to develop holistic, culturally responsive, and faith-informed approaches to care and advocacy.
This dissertation argues that depression among Black single …

Assessing Aerobic And Anaerobic Exercise As Therapies For Sarcopenia, Ella B. Farrer
Assessing Aerobic And Anaerobic Exercise As Therapies For Sarcopenia, Ella B. Farrer
Student Research Poster Presentations 2026
Sarcopenia is an age-related condition represented by progressive changes in muscle physiology that results in the loss of muscle mass and strength. The onset varies amongst individuals and can be influenced by various factors. On the cellular level, mitochondrial dysfunction and disruptions at neuromuscular junctions have been associated with the progression of sarcopenia. The condition ultimately reduces mobility, increases mortality, and hinders quality of life in older populations, necessitating an understanding of effective therapies.
Exercise was linked to symptom reduction of sarcopenia. Evidence indicated aerobic exercise and anaerobic exercise influence distinct molecular pathways involved in muscle physiology. Literature assessed the …
