Metabolic syndrome is a disease that often occurs in early adulthood. Maintaining a good lifestyle to prevent non-communicable diseases is very important to maintain a good quality of life. In early adulthood, most of them are still not exposed to information related to metabolic syndrome, so it is necessary to provide interventions associated with it. This study uses the Nutrizone gameboard intervention media. Good early adults’ knowledge and attitude about Metabolic Syndrome may lead to a good lifestyle that prevents them from suffering from NCDs. An intervention media may improve their knowledge and attitude. The research design used was pre-experimental …

The increased risk of non-communicable diseases is still a problem in Indonesia, one of which is the lack of consumption of fruits and vegetables. The available data shows that although fruits and vegetables have a protective/protective effect on the incidence of non-communicable diseases but in real life, the average consumption of fruits and vegetables is still below the recommended intake. Thus, the protective effect cannot be seen clearly. This study aims to describe the consumption of fruits and vegetables and determine the factors of food parenting practices and other factors related to the consumption of fruits and vegetables in students …

The Association Of Social Media Use And Psychiatric Diagnoses Among Missouri College Students, Avigail Davidovits, Ryan Carpenter, Khrystyna Stetsiv
Undergraduate Research Symposium
Introduction: “Many college students experience significant mental health difficulties, with the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbating these concerns (Sonet al., 2020). Mental health is significantly impacted by social media use, and this relationship has become increasingly complex after the COVID-19 pandemic (Haddad et al., 2021).” Research shows that depression, eating disorders, and anxiety are associated with more time spent on social media (Alam et al., 2021; Khan et al., 2019; Reighm et al., 2019; Sansha et al., 2017; Sidani et al., 2016). To follow-up on this research and assess the relationship between social media usage and psychiatric diagnoses among Missouri college students, …

Selenium (Se) contamination of public lands and water is a result of irrigated agriculture and mining activities in areas rich in Se geologic deposits. Pariette Draw is part of the northern Colorado Plateau and is an area of concern for Se contamination in the Pariette Wetlands. Pariette Wetlands, a wetland built in the 1970s to provide wildlife habitat, is distinguished by its arid climate and a short growing season of hot dry summers followed by cold winters with several months below freezing. An understanding of how Se is mobilized and removed within the wetland will provide management strategies that minimize …

Gonads Without Glp-1: Silencing Glp-1 In The Male Somatic Gonad In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Matthew Titus
Undergraduate Theses
In C. elegans, the gene glp-1 encodes for a Notch receptor called GLP-1, one of two found in C. elegans’ genome. The gene has been previously implicated in the development of the hermaphroditic germline as well as playing a role in the mitosis/meiosis decision. Genetic screening has further identified it as potentially playing a role in the development of the male somatic gonad, making it an ideal candidate for a reverse genetic. We did this by silencing glp-1 and observing if any alterations to the gonad’s phenotype occur.
Normally this could be done by performing a gene knockout. …

Background: 5-year survival after childhood cancer does not fully describe life-years lost due to childhood cancer because there are a large number of deaths occurring beyond 5-years (late mortality) related to cancer and cancer treatment. Specific causes of health-related (non-recurrence, non-external) late mortality and risk reduction through modifiable lifestyle and cardiovascular risk factors are not well described. Through using a well-characterised cohort of 5-year survivors of the most common childhood cancers, we evaluated specific health-related causes of late mortality and excess deaths compared with the general US population and identified targets to reduce future risk.

Ataxia telangiectasia (A-T) is a rare, multisystem progressive condition that typically presents in early childhood. In the absence of cure, people with A-T require coordinated multidisciplinary care to manage their complex array of needs and to minimize the disease burden. Although symptom management has proven benefits for this population, including improved quality of life and reduced complications, there is a need for guidance specific to the nursing and allied healthcare teams who provide care within the community. A scoping review, adopting the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology, was undertaken. It aimed to identify and map the available expertise from nursing and …

Cardiac rehabilitation programs including aerobic and resistance training improve quality of life, physical function and exercise capacity (average increase of 5.2 ml/kg/min). Resistance training increases muscle strength (from 20% 1-RM to 80%), endurance, and exercise performance.
The acute response during resistance training is an increased blood pressure and heart rate due to higher pressure response. This response is based on load and intensity. The Valsalva maneuver should be avoided as it may increase this response.
Individuals with untreated HTN experienced 5mmHg decrease SBP and 3mmHg decrease DBP.
It is the combination of aerobic exercise with resistance training that is more beneficial …

It is no secret that obesity is on the rise in the U.S. Obesity causes health problems, death, and economic loss, and is bad for the common good of society. However, considering my message is about good mental and physical health, we need to pay attention to other factors such as excessive attention to body image, which can also be dangerous to our health and well-being. I believe that living a balanced lifestyle with daily exercise and healthy eating is essential to live a long life with both good physical and mental health.

The Relationship Between Nutrition And The Success Of Learning In American Elementary-Aged Students, Christina Molinelli
Academic Festival
Nutrition is widely understood as an important factor in many health outcomes. However, the impact that nutrition has on learning outcomes is often not considered. Studies have found an identifiable relationship between nutrition and academic achievement in elementary-aged children in American schools. Just as poor nutrition leads to poor health outcomes, poor nutrition also leads to poor academic achievement in ways such that mental development is hindered, cognitive functions are not optimal, test scores are low, and rates of absenteeism are high. With the influence that nutrition has on learning outcomes, studies have also found the importance that eating breakfast …

The minds and bodies of children are some of the most impressionable, open to influence from the environment and the actions and ideas of those around them. The ways which children think about themselves and those they may come into contact with can be strongly influenced by the way they are raised, in a rich or poor family, in a small or large one. Both the socioeconomic status and structure of a child's family throughout their upbringing impacts the physical and mental health outcomes of the child. Children of lower socioeconomic statuses, particularly those from low-income backgrounds, minority racial and …

The Impact Of Nutrition On The Mental And Physical Health Of Young Adults, Dareena El-Far
WRIT: Journal of First-Year Writing
Upon close examination by nutritional professionals, concern has arisen regarding the typical contents of a young adult diet. In terms of the rate at which young adults choose to consume nutritionally-dense food items, the rate at which nutrition-deficient junk food items are chosen over the former is significantly higher. Among further examinations of this issue by researchers, it has become evident that the nutritional decisions made by young adults are increasingly associated with several social, commercial, mental, educational, and economic influences. As a consequence of these factors, research has uncovered a connection between the consumption of a poor diet and …

It Wasn’T A Duck: A Case Of The Misdiagnosis Of Ketoacidosis, Shiva Mohan, Brandon Vu, Danielle Ford
North Texas GME Research Forum 2023
Introduction Most clinicians have heard the old adage: if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it’s a duck. However, this is not always true. Ketoacidosis is a complicated physiological state resulting from fatty acid and amino acid degradation often associated with type 1 diabetics. It can also arise with excess alcoholism, pregnancy, starvation, and exercise. Diabetic, alcoholic, and starvation ketoacidosis may present similarly. Clinicians can often mistake alcoholic and starvation ketoacidosis for diabetic ketoacidosis due to its common presentation. We present a case of a young non-pregnant woman with a history of …

An Update Is Required To Continue Using This Regulation: Why The Hipaa Privacy Rule Should Be Modified To Protect A Broader Range Of Health Data, Lauren Caverly Pratt
Belmont Health Law Journal
While there is no constitutional right to privacy of information, general public sentiment leans in favor of keeping personal health data private. More precisely, individuals would like information known only to the individual and other parties to whom he or she chooses to disclose the information. This is because public knowledge of sensitive personal data may harm the individual economically, socially, or in other intangible ways. The benefits of public knowledge of such individually identifiable health data do not outweigh these potential harms. Privacy should be the default.
To achieve this, HIPAA must be expanded to protect private health data …

Euglycemic Diabetic Ketoacidosis Secondary To Sglt2 Inhibitors In Combination With A Low-Carbohydrate Diet, George Yeung, Nhi Duong, Akshaj Pole, Benjamin Larsen, Syed Ahmed
North Texas GME Research Forum 2023
Euglycemic diabetic ketoacidosis (EuDKA) is a rare complication of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) characterized by normoglycemia in the presence of anion gap metabolic acidosis and blood ketone. EuDKA has been associated with the use of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) but the reported adverse events are scarce. We present a case of a 68-year-old gentleman with T2DM and coronary artery disease, who developed EuDKA after starting empagliflozin (Jardiance) with a low-carbohydrate diet for a few days. SGLT2i block proximal tubule glucose reabsorption, resulting in a state of carbohydrate starvation and subsequent ketosis. The combination of SGLT2i with a low-carbohydrate diet …
