Journal of Multicultural Affairs
Power brokers and their market economies enforce education on a global level. According to the United Nations, the effects of global neoliberal capitalism cause human rights violations in all parts of the world, yet democratic countries scoff at these findings (Pogge, 2002 & 2005). People of the world continue to believe that tying minoritized students to existing structures and ensuring enculturation is the best possible outcome for all involved (Suárez-Orozco & Suárez-Orozco, 2015). That is, minoritized children are educated to ensure first-world countries produce a minimally educated and willing labor force. In this paper we argue the following: 1) power …

This paper explores the student experience in North Texas through current research and interviews with students, parents, educators, and nonprofit leaders who leaned into the work of meeting basic needs in an extremely challenging time. The chapter begins with data on COVID-19 infection rates in the community and publicly available data from school districts and Texas Education Agency on academic achievement, grounding the chapter in quantitative facts. Next, findings from interviews provide context on the human impact of the pandemic. Parents and educators share their perspectives on the challenges students faced, unpacking what they wish they had known early in …
An Improved Digestion And Analysis Procedure For Silicon In Plant Tissue, Noah James Langenfeld, Bruce Bugbee
An Improved Digestion And Analysis Procedure For Silicon In Plant Tissue, Noah James Langenfeld, Bruce Bugbee
Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications
Silicon (Si) in plant tissues reduces abiotic and biotic stress, but it is incorporated as silica (SiO2), which is difficult to solubilize for analysis. We modified an oven-induced tissue-digestion and analysis method to improve Si solubilization and validated its accuracy by quantifying the mass-balance recovery of Si from the hydroponic solution and plant tissues of cucumber (Cucumis sativus). Leaf, stem, and root tissues were dried, finely-ground, and digested in 12.5 molar sodium hydroxide at 95°C for 4 hours. Solutions were then acidified with 6 molar hydrochloric acid to achieve a pH below 2 for measurement of …

Reproductively Viable Population Of American Black Bears (Ursus Americanus) In Lowland Chihuahuan Desert Habitat Of Trans-Pecos Texas, Franklin D. Yancey Ii, Stephen Kasper
Western North American Naturalist
During a 6.5-year camera-trap study in Big Bend Ranch State Park (situated in the Trans-Pecos region of West Texas), we documented a persistent breeding population of American black bears (Ursus americanus) in the Solitario region of the park. The habitat in the Solitario, which is an isolated, eroded remnant of volcanic activity, is low-elevation Chihuahuan Desert scrub but includes significant and complex localized topography and prolonged water sources in the form of tinajas. From January 2016 to May 2022, camera traps captured 367,301 photographs. Of these, 868 contained one or more black bears, resulting in 1010 black bear …

Using antibiotics without medical guidance (non-prescription antibiotic use) may contribute to antimicrobial resistance. Hispanic individuals are a growing demographic group in the United States (US) with a high prevalence of non-prescription antibiotic use. We investigated the effects of acculturation and subjective norms on Hispanic individuals’ intentions to use antibiotics without a prescription from the following sources: (1) markets in the United States (not legal), (2) other countries (abroad), (3) leftovers from previous prescriptions, and (4) friends/relatives. We surveyed self-identified Hispanic outpatients in eight clinics from January 2020 to June 2021 using the previously validated Short Acculturation Scale for Hispanics (SASH). …

Women with perinatal depression are at a high risk for unhealthy dietary behaviors but whether the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has exacerbated this risk is unknown. Here we report the findings of a qualitative study exploring the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on nutrition-related experiences of women with perinatal depression. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, in-depth interviews were conducted with 18 women with a history of perinatal depression and 10 healthcare providers. A semistructured format elicited how food and nutrition-related behaviors of women with perinatal depression were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Thematic analysis identified 4 themes related to …

BACKGROUND: Research has shown that early exposure to added sugars from table food is related to increased intake of added sugars in later childhood. The earliest window of exposure to added sugars may be in infancy via infant formula. However, beyond the well-established factors of maternal lifestyle and modeling, there is a lack of research examining how exposure to added sugars from infant formula influences infant/toddler added sugar intakes from table foods and sugar sweetened beverages (SSB).
OBJECTIVE: While accounting factors previously associated with infant/toddler added sugar intakes and maternal SSB consumption (proximal measure of maternal modeling), this study aims …

Stem Cell And Drug Delivery Systems For Promoting Angiogenesis And Myogenesis In Ischemic Limbs, Ning Gao
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a widespread atherosclerotic disorder affecting more than 200 million people globally, with critical limb ischemia (CLI) being its most severe manifestation. Stem cell therapy has been a promising CLI treatment, but the harsh conditions in an ischemic limb, such as hypoxia, high reactive oxygen species (ROS) stress, and the lack of a support matrix, trophic factors, and nutrients, all compromise therapeutic efficacy by reducing the survival rate or function of transplanted cells. This thesis presents various biomaterial systems designed for stem cell and drug delivery to improve the cell microenvironment and promote angiogenesis and myogenesis …

Food Science Faculty Articles and Research
Shrimp is the most-consumed seafood product in the United States; however, there is a lack of research into the extent of short-weighting and mislabeling of shrimp in the commercial marketplace. The objective of this study was to investigate frozen shrimp for Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) compliance, species authentication, acceptable market names, net weights, and percent glaze. A total of 106 frozen shrimp packages were purchased from grocery stores in Southern California. Samples were considered COOL compliant if both the procurement method and country of origin were reported at the point of sale. Species authentication and acceptable market names were …

Levothyroxine (LT) is the synthetic form of thyroxine (T4), a thyroid hormone analog used to treat hypothyroidism. LT overdose rarely results in severely poor outcomes. General guidelines for treating exogenous thyrotoxicosis depend on the severity of symptoms. There is no standardized protocol; however, drug discontinuation, beta-blockers (specifically propranolol), and cholestyramine effectively manage overdose when needed, with most cases resolving independently without medical intervention. Here, we present the case of a 26-year-old female with a history of supraventricular tachycardia, anxiety, depression, and Hashimoto thyroiditis who was accidentally overprescribed LT (300 mcg for one and a half months) that resulted in symptoms …

Training The Next Generation Of Primary-Care Physicians: Are Student-Run Free Clinics (Srfcs) The Way To Go?, Tobe Momah
Journal of Public Health in the Deep South
Background: The consensus over the last 20 years is that increased availability of primary care reduces the overall cost of healthcare and improves mortality and morbidity rates by as much as 1.44 fewer deaths per 10,000 people (American College of Physicians, 2008; Shi, Starfield, Kennedy, & Kawachi, 1999). However, not enough physicians are going into primary care to meet the need for improved and increased access. By 2020, the expanded Title VII program goal is to produce a physician workforce that is at least 40 percent primary care (Jackson et al., 2014). Estimates show that 74% of U.S. medical school …

The Prevention And Cardiac Rehabilitation Group Of The Saudi Heart Association Recommendations Regarding Establishing A Cardiac Rehabilitation Service, Abdulhalim Jamal Kinsara, Raghdah Aljehani, Jadwiga Wolszakiewicz, Adam Staron, Muteb A. Alsulaimy
Journal of the Saudi Heart Association
Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is a cornerstone in the secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation has obtained the highest class of recommendation and the level of evidence for the treatment of patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction, after myocardial revascularization, with chronic coronary syndromes, and in patients with heart failure (HF). Comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation should be implemented as soon as possible, be multi-phasic, and adjusted to the individual needs of the patient. CR is still suboptimally used, and many cardiac centers do not have such services (2). The provision of CR services should be based on standards and …

Multi-Species Host Use By The Parasitoid Fly Ormia Lineifrons, Kyle J. Rogers, Oliver M. Beckers
Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity
Antagonistic species relationships such as parasitoid/host interactions lead to evolutionary arms races between species. Many parasitoids use more than one host species, requiring the parasitoid to adapt to multiple hosts, sometimes being the leader or the follower in the evolutionary back-and-forth between species. Thus, multi-species interactions are dynamic and show temporary evolutionary outcomes at a given point in time. We investigated the interactions of the multivoltine parasitoid fly Ormia lineifrons that uses different katydid hosts for each of its fly generations sequentially over time. We hypothesized that this fly is adapted to utilizing all hosts equally well for the population …
