Addressing A Cohort Discrepancy Among Ninth-Grade Students At A Rural/Suburban High School, Bryley Keaton Murphy
Addressing A Cohort Discrepancy Among Ninth-Grade Students At A Rural/Suburban High School, Bryley Keaton Murphy
Theses and Dissertations--Educational Leadership Studies
Ninth grade is a critical period where some children experience academic and social growth, while others struggle to navigate their new context, leading to reduced outcomes at school and worsened physical/mental health (Benner & Graham, 2007; Rice, 2001). This mixed-methods action research (MMAR) study addressed how professional practice changes could better support students during this foundational period. Quantitative data was collected from school databases to compare the rate of student success and identify demographic discrepancies, while qualitative data was used to identify possible causes. These data were then integrated to create insightful meta-inferences into the problem of practice. From these …

Theses and Dissertations--Educational Leadership Studies
Empowered teachers believe they can improve their work conditions and positively impact student outcomes. Likewise, teachers with technology integration knowledge can effectively use technology to enhance lessons and improve student learning. This quantitative correlational study investigated teachers’ empowerment, teachers’ technology integration knowledge, and associations between empowerment and technology integration knowledge. Two hundred fourteen randomly selected high school science teachers from across the United States responded to a survey intended to measure empowerment and technology integration knowledge. The teachers' average responses indicate that teachers generally agree with statements surrounding empowerment (M = 3.93, SD = 0.54) and technology integration knowledge …
Embracing Rural First-Generation College Student Scholar Identity: Wading Waist Deep In Unfamiliar Waters, Robert Hayes
Embracing Rural First-Generation College Student Scholar Identity: Wading Waist Deep In Unfamiliar Waters, Robert Hayes
Theses and Dissertations--Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation
First-generation college students do not persist to degree completion at the same rate as their continuing generation peers. There is a wide range of research focusing on the challenges and opportunities that first-generation college students experience, ranging from pre-matriculation factors, the transition period to college, and throughout the undergraduate years. The achievement gap, in terms of persistence to degree, has been a consistent focus of research as first-generation students routinely do not earn college degrees at the same rate as their continuing generation peers. This research takes a holistic approach to understanding the first-generation college student experience that does not …
Examination Of Physiological And Perceptual Responses During Sustained, Isometric, Fatiguing, Handgrip Exercise Anchored To Ratings Of Perceived Exertion, Minyoung Kwak
Theses and Dissertations--Kinesiology and Health Promotion

Responses To Exercise Anchored To Vigorous Intensity Heart Rates, Djadmann Gustave
Theses and Dissertations--Kinesiology and Health Promotion
Exercise prescription to improve cardiorespiratory endurance (CE) is often based on percentages of the reserve or maximum heart rate (HRpeak) or oxygen consumption rate (V̇O2peak)that reflect vigorous intensities (77-95% HRpeak, 64-90% V̇O2peak). These intensities elicit a rating of perceived exertion [RPE] response between 14-17 on the 6-20 Borg Scale. It is recommended that exercise within these ranges be sustained for 20-60min per session. The purposes of this study were to: 1) Determine the metabolic (V̇O2) and perceptual (RPE) responses as well as the sustainability of exercise (time to exhaustion [T …
Investigation Of Lower Extremity Neuromuscular Function In Individuals With And Without Diabetes, Roya Hoveizavi
Investigation Of Lower Extremity Neuromuscular Function In Individuals With And Without Diabetes, Roya Hoveizavi
Theses and Dissertations--Kinesiology and Health Promotion
Background: Diabetes mellitus is associated with notable neuromuscular and motor dysfunctions that could lead to an increased risk of plantar ulcers and amputations. Several contributing factors, including increased muscle-tendon stiffness and abnormal muscle activation pattern may influence the kinematics and kinetics of walking in people with diabetes and promote formation of plantar ulcers. Hyperglycemia and the resultant accelerated rate of glycation have been recognized as the leading cause of muscle and tendon degeneration, yet the precise mechanisms by which diabetes affects the biomechanical properties of the muscle-tendon unit remains unclear. Altered muscle activity during gait is observed in people with …
The Relationship Of Multidimensional Athlete Characteristics Versus Competition Performance And Participation In American Football Players, Alex Brownell
Theses and Dissertations--Kinesiology and Health Promotion
BACKGROUND: Athlete evaluation in American football is dominated by the evaluation characteristics that underly key performance indicators (KPI’s) in the physical domain of performance. Team sport athlete performance is comprised of a combination of attributes in the physical, technical, tactical, and mental domains of performance. Using only KPI’s in the physical domain of performance to predict competition performance of American football athletes is challenging due to the differences in performance outcomes of the varying positions in American football and absence of the other performance dimensions that are not accounted for. Advances in athlete assessment have revolutionized the process of evaluating …

Theses and Dissertations--Kinesiology and Health Promotion
Despite its popularity, there is a lack of research describing the physical demands of American Football. This is surprising when considering the popularity of the use of global positioning systems (GPS) within this specific sporting environment. The aim of the present study was to utilize a novel methodology to describe the physical demands of American football players by play type (run vs. pass) using a play-by-play analysis of global positioning system (GPS) outcomes. Fifty Division I collegiate American football players (Age: 19.8 ± 1.1 yr, Height: 189.3 ± 4.4 cm, Body mass: 86.1 ± 5.8 kg) wore portable GPS monitors …
Reliability And Validity Of A Commercial Running Power Meter To Indicate Metabolic Workload During Endurance Running, James Harris Hudgins Iii
Reliability And Validity Of A Commercial Running Power Meter To Indicate Metabolic Workload During Endurance Running, James Harris Hudgins Iii
Theses and Dissertations--Kinesiology and Health Promotion
Commercial running power (RP) meters may provide endurance runners and coaches with improved precision for monitoring running intensity. Cyclists rely upon the relationship between cycling power and metabolic demand to regulate physiological intensity during training and racing, independent of changes in the physical environment (e.g., terrain, wind). Research demonstrates strong reliability and validity for a specific RP meter to indicate metabolic demand within controlled running conditions. However, several potential influences on this relationship have not been investigated. Therefore, four studies were conducted with the following aims:
- Study 1: Determine the inter-limb reliability and validity of a single-limb-based RP meter …

Theses and Dissertations--Education Sciences
Technology within science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) classrooms has been a topic of discussion for decades (Reiser, 2001, 2007). With the inclusion of more technologies or digital tools in the classroom has pushed classes towards a blended learning or flipped classroom approach (Atkins 2015; Tayebinik & Puteh, 2013; Williams et al., 2008). One such digital tool that has started gaining traction in the STEM classroom is the interactive video (M. K. Seery, 2013; Smith, 2013). Interactive videos allow students to watch the general lecture material outside of class and work through problems during normal class time (M. K. Seery, …
Developing Pedagogical Content Knowledge As Communal Practice: A Case Study Of Chemistry Graduate Teaching Assistants, Walker Bryan Mask
Developing Pedagogical Content Knowledge As Communal Practice: A Case Study Of Chemistry Graduate Teaching Assistants, Walker Bryan Mask
Theses and Dissertations--Education Sciences
Learning does not only happen during dedicated instructional time, which also applies to learning how to teach. Teachers can reflect on their practice while working to continue to improve and develop their teaching skills. In addition to self-reflection, teachers can also learn from their colleagues to experiment with new practices and take others’ teaching knowledge into their repertoire. Understanding how these two processes function can lead to developments in teacher education and professional development, specifically for initiatives that seek to promote collaboration among teachers. Post-secondary educators in particular can benefit from collaborative and reflective practices to improve their teaching, especially …

Minimum High School Graduation Requirements And Teacher Compensation, Allison Johnson
Minimum High School Graduation Requirements And Teacher Compensation, Allison Johnson
Theses and Dissertations--Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation
In the last forty years of educational reform, significant changes have been made to the number and type of high school credits students are required to complete for graduation. As these requirements have changed, the demand for higher-level academic courses has increased while teacher shortages, particularly in high-demand areas such as math and science, have continued to increase. This study uses data from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) Student and Staffing Survey to examine the relationship between minimum graduation credit requirements in core subject areas (English, math, science and social sciences) and teacher salaries, both holistically and in …

This study uses critical race quantitative intersectionality to examine the impacts of gender and dis/ability type on Black students’ school discipline outcomes. We use multilevel logistic regression models to analyze data from a large urban school district, considering the intersectional impact of gender and dis/ability type on school discipline outcomes among Black students (suspension, restorative justice, referral to law enforcement). We found that Black students identified as male, labeled with emotional dis/abilities, or identified as having ADHD were more likely to experience school discipline consequences than those who were not. These findings suggest that gender and dis/ability status are significant …

How Many Non-Isospectral Integral Circulant Graphs Are There?, Katja Mönius, Wasin So
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
The answer to the question in the title is contained in the following conjecture by So [Discrete Math. 306 (2006), 153–158]: There are exactly 2τ(n)−1 non-isospectral integral circulant graphs of order n, whereτ(n) is the number of divisors of n. In this paper we review some background about this conjecture, which is still open. Moreover, we affirm this conjecture for some special cases of n, namely,n = pk,pqk,p2q with primes 2 ≤ p

Maximizing External Action With Information Provision Over Multiple Rounds In Online Social Networks, Masaaki Miyashita, Norihiko Shinomiya, Daisuke Kasamatsu, Genya Ishigaki
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Online social networks have increased their impact on the real world, which motivates information senders to control the propagation process of information to promote particular actions of online users. However, the existing works on information provisioning seem to oversimplify the users? decision-making process that involves information reception, internal actions of social networks, and external actions of social networks. In particular, characterizing the best practices of information provisioning that promotes the users? external actions is a complex task due to the complexity of the propagation process in OSNs, even when the variation of information is limited. Therefore, we propose a new …

Recognizing a face is a remarkable process that humans naturally use. Computer vision has tried to resemble this ability of human vision as a biometric tool to identify humans. Commercial and law enforcement applications are increasingly using face recognition technology to identify people. Currently, it is one of the most sought-after detection methods used in forensics for criminal identification purposes. Owing to similarities in the appearance of certain faces, especially in criminal cases, this problem poses a great challenge in forensic investigation and detection. The novelty of this work lies in the development of a framework for face recognition using …

A Step-By-Step Hhl Algorithm Walkthrough To Enhance Understanding Of Critical Quantum Computing Concepts, Anika Zaman, Hector Jose Morrell, Hiu Yung Wong
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
After learning basic quantum computing concepts, it is desirable to reinforce the learning using an important and relatively complex algorithm through which students can observe and appreciate how qubits evolve and interact with each other. Harrow-Hassidim-Lloyd (HHL) quantum algorithm, which can solve linear system problems with exponential speed-up over the classical method and is the basis of many important quantum computing algorithms, is used to serve this purpose. The HHL algorithm is explained analytically followed by a 4-qubit numerical example in bra-ket notation. Matlab code corresponding to the numerical example is available for students to gain a deeper understanding of …

A Three-Dimensional Cfd Analysis For The Hydrodynamics Of The Direct Contact Heat Transfer In The Oxygen Production Slurry Bubble Column Reactor Of The Cu-Cl Cycle Of Hydrogen Production, Nibras Ibrahim Nassar
Theses
Hydrogen is becoming an increasingly attractive alternative fuel. As such it is important to investigate different methods of hydrogen production. This thesis examines the thermochemical process of splitting water using the three stage CuCl Cycle. In particular it examines the hydrodynamics of a direct heat contact, CuCl’s oxygen reactor for a two-phase system, using a three dimensional, Eulerian-Eulerian Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model. The model was first verified using experimental results and compared to a two-dimensional CFD model by examining the gas holdup (αg) using a Helium-Water-Alumina system for different reactor heights (H) (45,55,65 cm), different superficial gas velocities (Ugs) …

Grossman conjectured that R(G, G) = 2 · |V (G)| − 1, for all simple connected unicyclic graphs G of odd girth and |V (G)| ≥ 4. In this note, we prove his conjecture for various classes of G containing a triangle. In addition, new diagonal graph Ramsey numbers are calculated for some classes of simple connected unicyclic graphs of even girth.

Simple And Complex Cells Revisited: Toward A Selectivity-Invariance Model Of Object Recognition, Xin Li, Shuo Wang
Simple And Complex Cells Revisited: Toward A Selectivity-Invariance Model Of Object Recognition, Xin Li, Shuo Wang
2020-Current year OA Pubs
This paper presents a theoretical perspective on modeling ventral stream processing by revisiting the computational abstraction of simple and complex cells. In parallel to David Marr's vision theory, we organize the new perspective into three levels. At the computational level, we abstract simple and complex cells into space partitioning and composition in a topological space based on the redundancy exploitation hypothesis of Horace Barlow. At the algorithmic level, we present a hierarchical extension of sparse coding by exploiting the manifold constraint in high-dimensional space (i.e., the blessing of dimensionality). The resulting over-parameterized models for object recognition differ from existing hierarchical …
Distributing Deterrence Fairly: A New Rationale For Decoupling Tort Liability, H. Javier Kordi
Distributing Deterrence Fairly: A New Rationale For Decoupling Tort Liability, H. Javier Kordi
Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series
Tort law faces a dilemma: how to adhere to a principle of make-whole compensation without entrenching social inequities. High-earning people receive greater compensation awards, resulting in an unequal distribution of deterrence. The deterrence disparity arises because injurers would rationally direct risky activity towards poorer victims to reduce liability costs; it persists even if race and gender classifications are barred from compensation. This Article offers a novel solution to the dilemma. It develops a decoupled liability regime under which injurers pay damages and are subject to standards of care that are invariant across individual victims, thus equalizing the distribution of deterrence. …
