French Subtitling Strategies And Techniques Used In Indonesian Film Marlina Si Pembunuh Dalam Empat Babak, Tesyalia Zara Aisyah, Arif Budiman

International Review of Humanities Studies

This qualitative research aims to describe the use of subtitling strategies and techniques in Indonesian film Marlina si Pembunuh dalam Empat Babak due to spatial constraints. The corpus consists of Indonesian audio script of the movie and its French subtitle. The theoretical framework is based on Gottlieb’s ten strategies of subtitling, and Carmitroglou’s, Carroll and Ivarsson’s codes of subtitling. The results indicate that out of ten strategies, one strategy, transcription, is not applicable to the corpus. The most common strategies are transfer, then condensation. Transfer is used to translate simple phrases, while condensation is used to translate dialogs with unimportant …

Metonymy In The Book Of Mormon Nov 2023

Metonymy In The Book Of Mormon

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

A suggestion by Gordon Thomasson led to a May 3 seminar where 11 F.A.R.M.S. collaborators examined another subtle stylistic feature in the Book of Mormon. Metonymy is the practice of giving a person or place a name whose meaning reflects an event or trait associated with that person or place. A closely related practice sees a person's name become symbolic of some phenomenon. An example of metonymy is in I Sam. 25 where a man is said to have been named Nabal, "fool," because he refused to aid David and his supporters. The second pattern is shown in the statement …

Is Mulek Mentioned In The Bible?

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

Helaman 6:10 records that Zedekiah, King of Judah in Lehi's day, had a son named Mulek who escaped execution by the Babylonians, despite the statement in 2 Kings 25:4-7 that the king's sons were slain. While the name Mulek is not mentioned directly in the Bible, scholars have recently drawn some interesting conclusions about a person named Malchiah, mentioned in Jer. 38:6. Could he have been Mulek?

A Pragmatic Contrastive Analysis Of Apology Strategies In Jordanian Arabic And English Language, Nesreen Ja'afreh

Jordan Journal of Applied Science-Humanities Series

Awareness of language or language competency has greatly changed from the focus of language itself as form and structure to language use as pragmatics. Accordingly, different culture's structure discourse in different ways. Moreover, studies have shown that this holds for discourse genres traditionally considered as highly standardized in their rituals and formulas. As a complementary study to the previous studies, this study provides a contrastive analysis, from a pragmatic point of view, of apology strategies in Jordanian Arabic and English. Through, a twelve situations questionnaire, this research investigates apology strategies as they are used by Jordanian EFL postgraduate students at …

The Linguistic Structure In 'Dafatir Al-Warraq' By Jalal Bargas: 'The Notebooks Of The Papermaker' Novel Between The Act Of Notation And The Speech Of Thresholds, Nidal Al-Shamali, Murad Al-Bayarri Nov 2023

The Linguistic Structure In 'Dafatir Al-Warraq' By Jalal Bargas: 'The Notebooks Of The Papermaker' Novel Between The Act Of Notation And The Speech Of Thresholds, Nidal Al-Shamali, Murad Al-Bayarri

Jordan Journal of Applied Science-Humanities Series

This study explores the linguistic structure and text thresholds in Jalal Barjas's 2020 novel 'Dafatir al-Warraq.' The novel creates a narrative language grounded in a philosophical context of text thresholds, forming a basis for inquiries inspired by the painful realities of contemporary life. The narrative language and its thresholds play a mediating role, integrating other elements, despite a division that reflects the hero’s schizophrenia and his loss of the correct path.

Hence, the study aims to evaluate the language of narration by considering narrative writing as an approach to storytelling. This approach led to the novel being narrated once in …

Natural Language Processing Faculty Publications

The OffensEval shared tasks organized as part of SemEval-2019-2020 were very popular, attracting over 1300 participating teams. The two editions of the shared task helped advance the state of the art in offensive language identification by providing the community with benchmark datasets in Arabic, Danish, English, Greek, and Turkish. The datasets were annotated using the OLID hierarchical taxonomy, which since then has become the de facto standard in general offensive language identification research and was widely used beyond OffensEval. We present a survey of OffensEval and related competitions, and we discuss the main lessons learned. We further evaluate the performance …

The Irrepressible Influence Of Vocal Stereotypes On Trust, Ilaria Torre, Laurence White, Jeremy Goslin, Sarah Knight Nov 2023

The Irrepressible Influence Of Vocal Stereotypes On Trust, Ilaria Torre, Laurence White, Jeremy Goslin, Sarah Knight

School of Psychology

There is a reciprocal relationship between trust and vocal communication in human interactions. On one hand, a predisposition towards trust is necessary for communication to be meaningful and effective. On the other hand, we use vocal cues to signal our own trustworthiness and to infer it from the speech of others. Research on trustworthiness attributions to vocal characteristics is scarce and contradictory, however, being typically based on explicit judgements which may not predict actual trust-oriented behaviour. We use a game theory paradigm to examine the influence of speaker accent and prosody on trusting behaviour towards a simulated game partner, who …

Ethnicity, Identity, And Conceptualizing Community In Indian Ocean East Africa, Daren E. Ray Nov 2023

Ethnicity, Identity, And Conceptualizing Community In Indian Ocean East Africa, Daren E. Ray

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

This volume explores how the people of littoral East Africa imagined and reimagined their communities over two millennia of engagement with Indian Ocean transformations—from the settlement of Bantu speakers near the coast around the first century CE to their participation in transoceanic commerce, imperial rivalries, colonial projects, and decolonization movements in the mid-twentieth century. Like other histories of the Indian Ocean, it emphasizes the circulation of people and ideas, but its cis-oceanic approach demonstrates how these littoral communities continued to integrate strategies from those in Africa’s interior as well as from people who traveled the ocean.

The book also clarifies …

All Faculty Scholarship (Archived)

Air writing is one of the essential fields that the world is turning to, which can benefit from the world of the metaverse, as well as the ease of communication between humans and machines. The research literature on air writing and its applications shows significant work in English and Chinese, while little research is conducted in other languages, such as Arabic. To fill this gap, we propose a hybrid model that combines feature extraction with deep learning models and then uses machine learning (ML) and optical character recognition (OCR) methods and applies grid and random search optimization algorithms to obtain …

Course-based research pedagogy involves positioning students as contributors to authentic research projects as part of an engaging educational experience that promotes their learning and persistence in science. To develop a model for assessing and grading students engaged in this type of learning experience, the assessment aims and practices of a community of experienced course-based research instructors were collected and analyzed. This approach defines four aims of course-based research assessment—(1) Assessing Laboratory Work and Scientific Thinking; (2) Evaluating Mastery of Concepts, Quantitative Thinking and Skills; (3) Appraising Forms of Scientific Communication; and (4) Metacognition of Learning—along with a set of practices …

Linguistic Impact On The Use Of The Reliable Digit Span For Performance Validity In A Sample Of English-Spanish Bilingual Adults, Amy Polinsky Nov 2023

Linguistic Impact On The Use Of The Reliable Digit Span For Performance Validity In A Sample Of English-Spanish Bilingual Adults, Amy Polinsky

Student Theses

Performance validity tests (PVTs) are used alongside neuropsychological assessments to help detect suspect effort. One of the most widely used PVTs, the Reliable Digit Span (RDS), and its latest version, the RDS-revised (RDS-R), have been widely accepted as valid and reliable within the general population. However, as the United States becomes increasingly globalized, questions arise regarding the validity of language-based tests such as the RDS and RDS-R amongst English-Spanish bilingual populations. This study used a within-subject design with 28 bilingual undergraduate students, testing them on the Digit Span (the test that RDS results are based on) in both English and …

Further Reflections On Visual Illustrations Of Philosophy: A Response To Freeland, Schellekens, And Strayer, Thomas E. Wartenberg

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

The incisive commentaries about Thoughtful Images by Cynthia Freeland, Elisabeth Schellekens, and Jeff Strayer provide the occasion for a rethinking of some of the fundamental claims about visual illustrations of philosophy that I made in the book. The essay begins with a discussion of the “logic” of the term ‘illustration’ and then discusses the relationship between illustrations and technology. A variety of different themes are then addressed, such as the possibility of musical illustrations of philosophy; differences in the processing of written texts and visual images; additions to fidelity and felicity as norms applying to successful illustrations of philosophy; and …

Navigating Unfair Contract Terms: Drawing Insights From Australia In Addressing The Legal Conundrum In Malaysia, Ibtisam@Ilyana Ilias, Norazlina Abdul Aziz, Hariz Sufi Zahari, Helza Nova Lita

International Journal on Consumer Law and Practice

In Malaysia, the regulation of unfair contract terms within business-to-consumer contracts falls under the jurisdiction of Part IIIA of the Consumer Protection Act 1999. This regulatory framework is overseen by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Living Cost. However, the effectiveness of Part IIIA is hindered by certain gaps, resulting in its infrequent utilization for determining unfair terms in consumer contracts. One of the primary challenges lies in interpreting key terms such as “harsh,” “oppressive,” “unconscionable,” and “adequate justification.” These ambiguities often remain unresolved until legal proceedings take place. Complicating matters, doubts persist regarding the applicability of the Consumer Protection …

The Economics Of Repair: Fixing Planned Obsolescence By Activating The Right To Repair In India, Dunia Zongwe, Mahantesh Gs, Mamatha R

International Journal on Consumer Law and Practice

This paper examines the lack of a Right to Repair (R2R) legislation in India, particularly in the technology sector, and proposes key principles for an optimal Right to Repair Act based on competition economics and consumer choice. In the current scenario, electronic devices are often designed with planned obsolescence, leading to limited lifespans and encouraging a cycle of consumption and disposal, which negatively impacts the economy, society, and the environment. The global R2R campaign aims to balance societal rights and corporate interests by empowering consumers with the right to repair their devices.

Our research is the first to develop core …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Objective: For youth with Type 1 Diabetes and their families, engaging in multiple complex health behaviors may delay and/or reduce serious complications by attempting to keep blood glucose levels within a specific range for as long as possible. As such, quick and rapid assessment of diabetes self-care behaviors is important, yet few brief (e.g., 2-5 items) established measures exist; and even fewer have been evaluated for bias across socio-medical-demographic proxies for privilege/oppression. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to develop a short form of the Self-Care Inventory (SCI-R) and to evaluate validity, reliability, and measurement bias across socio-demographics. Methods: …
