Dreaming My Ancestors: A Poetic Inquiry Into Longing And Legacy, Maya T. E. Borhani Feb 2023

Dreaming My Ancestors: A Poetic Inquiry Into Longing And Legacy, Maya T. E. Borhani

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

This poetic inquiry traces certain aspects of my identity as the daughter of an Iranian immigrant growing up in the United States. I use autobiographic life writing (Hasebe-Ludt, Chambers, Leggo, 2009) to lay out (some of) the bones of a larger personal and family story, followed by a suite of poems addressing some of the mysteries, wonderments, gifts and reckonings that I am left with—and which are inherent to—my misplaced, scattered family history and lineage. Although my father shared little about his life in Iran before coming to the U.S., with the help of other relatives I have gleaned a …

Assessment Of Co-Occurring Disabilities In Young Children Who Are Deaf And Hard Of Hearing, Brittany A. Dale, Raschelle Neild Feb 2023

Assessment Of Co-Occurring Disabilities In Young Children Who Are Deaf And Hard Of Hearing, Brittany A. Dale, Raschelle Neild

Perspectives on Early Childhood Psychology and Education

Overall, the literature is clear that more research is needed on various assessment techniques for identifying co-occurring disabilities in young children who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH). As individualized, norm-referenced assessment measures are updated to keep up with the changing demographics of the United States, there appears to be more of an effort to include children with various disabilities within the standardization samples; however, the communication barriers and required assessment accommodations remain the most salient with DHH students. Because accommodations are test-specific, psychologists must be cognizant of the accommodation and interpretation procedures of each test they select for …

The Importance Of Early Number Concepts For Learning Mathematics In Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Children, Clifton Langdon, Christopher Kurz, Marie Coppola Feb 2023

The Importance Of Early Number Concepts For Learning Mathematics In Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Children, Clifton Langdon, Christopher Kurz, Marie Coppola

Perspectives on Early Childhood Psychology and Education

This chapter discusses important background knowledge and research findings from a variety of disciplines that inform best practices for supporting optimal mathematical achievement in all children. First, discussion will begin with the importance of early numeracy for later academic outcomes, and why prioritization of instruction time and early intervention are needed to increase the likelihood of a strong foundation in numeracy. Second, a brief overview of numeracy development milestones will provide a basis for discussion of our central thesis: language experiences can impact numerical cognition, which then have a significant impact on academic outcomes. Third, given the importance of numeracy …

Educational Strategies For Deaf Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd), Aaron Shield, Patrick Graham, Raschelle Neild Feb 2023

Educational Strategies For Deaf Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd), Aaron Shield, Patrick Graham, Raschelle Neild

Perspectives on Early Childhood Psychology and Education

In this paper we highlight some of the difficulties that deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are likely to exhibit in the classroom, such as echolalia and insistence on sameness, deficits in perspective-taking and theory of mind, difficulty producing and comprehending facial expressions and pronouns, articulation difficulties, and challenges with social interaction. For each challenging area we propose educational strategies that teachers may find useful, including video modeling, visual schedules, Social Stories, Power Cards, and peer support groups. We encourage educators to be flexible and creative in their use of multiple teaching strategies with these children, …

“Will You Help Me With My Homework?”: A Case Use Of Visual Methodologies In Research With (Deaf) Children, Jennifer S. Hensley Feb 2023

“Will You Help Me With My Homework?”: A Case Use Of Visual Methodologies In Research With (Deaf) Children, Jennifer S. Hensley

Perspectives on Early Childhood Psychology and Education

This is an analysis of a qualitative study and the visually compelling methodology that aimed to create child-friendly/child-inclusive research conducted with deaf children. The researcher engaged in one-on-one and focus group interviews with young deaf children, ages 6 to 12 years old, in signing, deaf schools around the United States. The methodology employed a combination of videos, pictures, and modeling to portray the abstract concept of “research” and participation in research as a means to informed consent and to engage children in the task of considering personal reflections compared to others’ experiences. This article reviews techniques applied and the resulting …

Universal Design For Learning: Promoting Access In Early Childhood Education For Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Children, Katie Taylor, Raschelle Neild, Michael Fitzpatrick Feb 2023

Universal Design For Learning: Promoting Access In Early Childhood Education For Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Children, Katie Taylor, Raschelle Neild, Michael Fitzpatrick

Perspectives on Early Childhood Psychology and Education

The following article is a literature review of the guiding principles for universal design for learning (UDL) specifically for early childhood education with implications for children who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH). In recent years, early childhood education has become more inclusive for all children with and without disabilities. Given that educators need to plan lessons and design their classrooms with every child in mind prior to meeting them, guidance on the UDL framework is warranted. DHH children present unique barriers in the classroom. This article walks through the three guiding principles, engagement, representation, and expression along with …

Asl Rhyme, Rhythm, And Phonological Awareness For Deaf Children, Leala Holcomb Feb 2023

Asl Rhyme, Rhythm, And Phonological Awareness For Deaf Children, Leala Holcomb

Perspectives on Early Childhood Psychology and Education

The author, who is of multigenerational Deaf heritage, provides a review of the literature on spoken and signed rhyme, rhythm, and phonological awareness used with young children. While a foundation of knowledge has been built with early language approaches in spoken language, little is known about parallel forms of these approaches in American Sign Language (ASL). ASL rhyme, rhythm, and phonological awareness have historically been absent from early childhood classrooms that serve Deaf children. The author explores why this is the case and draws upon historical events to provide answers. An autoethnographic account of the author’s experience with early language …

Preparing Practitioners To Work With Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Infants, Toddlers, And Their Families: Professional Competencies That Result In Positive Outcomes, Marilyn Sass-Lehrer, Jodee Crace, Raschelle Neild Feb 2023

Preparing Practitioners To Work With Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Infants, Toddlers, And Their Families: Professional Competencies That Result In Positive Outcomes, Marilyn Sass-Lehrer, Jodee Crace, Raschelle Neild

Perspectives on Early Childhood Psychology and Education

Infants and toddlers who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) are unique in their physical and individual abilities and resources. Their diversity extends beyond hearing levels and involves physical, cognitive, social-emotional, and communicative attributes. Families with newly identified children have a wide range of backgrounds and experiences that influence how they respond to learning that their child is DHH and what they need from professionals in the first few days and months after their baby has been identified. While knowledge and skills generic to the field of early childhood special education provide a foundation for working with these children …

The Relevance Of Shame Across Time And Location, Miranda Vander Berg, Kari Sandouka

SDSU Data Science Symposium

Twitter is used among various entities professionals, politicians, and the general public as an online social network. Many tweets are informational, but others are reactive based on judgment that leads to public shaming. In response to the book “The Shame Machine” (by Cathy O’Neil), we look at Tweets to determine a linguistical and content analysis of shame. The research focuses on content analysis to define if a tweet contains language that is deduced as public shaming. Other factors relating to the tweet are the time, date, location of the author, and if it’s the initial post or a response to …

Bridging The Cultural Divide: A Single Case Study To Describe The Lived Experiences Of A High School Senior From A Mexican American Working-Class Family, Nadine E. Franz

Journal of Multicultural Affairs

ABSTRACT

Bridging the Cultural Divide:

A Single Case Study to Describe the Lived Experiences of a High School Senior from a Mexican American Working-Class Family

The United States’ education system lacks a commitment to multicultural education. This failure to validate all students’ cultural assets is problematic. Multicultural education challenges the status quo to change schools to validate the diverse backgrounds of students of color (Banks, 1993; Banks & Banks, 2015). The United States education system must adopt a multicultural education policy that focuses on equity, freedom, and diversity to ensure students’ success (Grant & Tate, 1995). Consequently, schools and students …

Architecting The Metaverse: Blockchain And The Financial And Legal Regulatory Challenges Of Virtual Real Estate, James Hutson, Guarango Banerjee, Naresh Kshetri, Kurt Odenwald, Jeremiah Ratican

Faculty Scholarship

There has been disagreement over the value of purchasing space in the metaverse, but many businesses including Nike, The Wendy’s Company, and McDonald’s have jumped in headfirst. While the metaverse land rush has been called an “illusion” given underdeveloped infrastructure, including inadequate software and servers, and the potential opportunities for economic and legal abuse, the “real estate of the future” shows no signs of slowing. While the current virtual space of the metaverse is worth $6.30 billion, that is expected to grow to $84.09 billion by the end of 2028. But the long-term legal and regulatory considerations of capitalizing on …

Words And Diagrams About Rosenstock-Huessy’S Cross Of Reality, Martin Zwick Feb 2023

Words And Diagrams About Rosenstock-Huessy’S Cross Of Reality, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper is a systems theoretic examination of Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy’s “cross of reality,” a structure that fuses a spatial dyad of inner-outer and a temporal dyad of past-future into a space-time tetrad. This structure is compatible not only with the "human-centered" point of view that Rosenstock-Huessy favours, but also with the "world-centered" point of view inherent in science. The structure, based in his analysis of speech, is applied by him to a wide variety of individual and collective human phenomena, including language, religion, and social critique. To appropriate terminology used by physicists, the cross of reality could be viewed as …

Trait Impressions From Voices Are Formed Rapidly Within 400ms Of Exposure, Mila Mileva, Nadine Lavan Feb 2023

Trait Impressions From Voices Are Formed Rapidly Within 400ms Of Exposure, Mila Mileva, Nadine Lavan

School of Psychology

When seeing a face or hearing a voice, perceivers readily form first impressions of a person's characteristics—are they trustworthy, do they seem aggressive? One of the key claims about trait impressions from faces and voices alike is that these impressions are formed rapidly. For faces, studies have systematically mapped this rapid time course of trait impressions, finding that they are well formed and stable after approximately 100 ms of exposure. For voices, however, no systematic investigation of the time course of trait perception exists. In the current study, listeners provided trait judgments (attractiveness, dominance, trustworthiness) based on recordings of 100 …

First Generation Preservice Teachers’ Self-Efficacy Regarding The Teaching Of Diverse Students And The Incorporation Of Diverse Topics Into Classroom Content, Roberto Ch. Nava, Peter M. Vigil, Jan P. Evenstad

The Interactive Journal of Global Leadership and Learning

The purpose for this study was to examine whether there is a difference in self-efficacy between first generation and non-first generation preservice teachers to address the teaching of diverse PK-12 students. Bandura’s (1997) concept of self-efficacy was employed as a framework to understand the results of the study. A cross-sectional design was used to analyze a self-efficacy survey that was administered to first generation and non-first generation preservice teachers. A total of 55 preservice teachers nearing completion of their teacher preparation at one university participated. The data demonstrates statistically significant differences of unequal self-efficacy development between first generation and non-first …

Effects Of Diglossia On The Acquisition Of Underlying Reading Processes: Toward Pragmatic Solutions, Mohammed R. Jouhar Phd Feb 2023

Effects Of Diglossia On The Acquisition Of Underlying Reading Processes: Toward Pragmatic Solutions, Mohammed R. Jouhar Phd

International Journal for Research in Education

The purpose of this systematic review was to investigate how diglossia hinders the acquisition of underlying reading processes of Arabic-speaking students and recommend pragmatic solutions that would help Arabic teachers in developing their students’ reading abilities. Results of the included studies showed that Arabic-speaking students lack standard phonemes, phonological and morphological patterns, and letters missing from their local Arabic vernaculars, which in turn, affect their word reading abilities. Nevertheless, it takes six years of systematic exposure to standard Arabic to close the linguistic gap between students’ oral and written language in terms of phonemes, letters, and phonological and morphological patterns. …
