Visuality, Language And Communication In Covid-19 Nigerian Social Media Images, Richard Oliseyenum Maledo, Karoh Ativie
Visuality, Language And Communication In Covid-19 Nigerian Social Media Images, Richard Oliseyenum Maledo, Karoh Ativie
International Review of Humanities Studies
Covid-19 is one of the most disturbing infections that has rattled the world in recent history. This flu affected nearly all the countries of the world with different degrees of medical, scientific, social and scholarly attentions. The humanities are not left out from the perspective of language and communication during the pandemic. In the light of the above, this paper undertakes a multimodal semiotic analysis of Covid-19 memes in the Nigerian context with a view to showing how the visual and language complement each other in communicating aspects of Nigerian socio-political realities during the pandemic. Among the images circulated through …
Battle Of Cultures: Translating Figurative Insults In Remy Sylado’S Ca-Bau-Kan, Doni Jaya
Battle Of Cultures: Translating Figurative Insults In Remy Sylado’S Ca-Bau-Kan, Doni Jaya
International Review of Humanities Studies
Translating figurative insults is one of the challenging features of literary translation because these expressions are often culture-bound and produce specific effect. This study seeks to propose a translation produced using predominantly foreignizing approach in an attempt to preserve the original effects, connotations, and nuances of the source text and to examine the extent to which foreignization and domestication can work together when used to deal with certain text types. The source text is taken from Remy Sylado’s novel Ca-Bau-Kan: Hanya Sebuah Dosa, particularly figurative verbal insults between several characters because of their offensive and hilarious double-effect unique to the …
A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Big Brother Watch’S Stop Covid Passes Campaign, Iman Yusuf Bachtiar, Lucia Lusi Ani Handayani
A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Big Brother Watch’S Stop Covid Passes Campaign, Iman Yusuf Bachtiar, Lucia Lusi Ani Handayani
International Review of Humanities Studies
Nineteen Eighty-Four has been widely recontextualised in many different situations, but there has not been any discourse that tries to relate it with surveillance issues in the U.K. in the context of Covid-19 pandemic other than Big Brother Watch’s Stop Covid Passes campaign. This paper aims to discuss how the civil liberties organisation brings the fear of surveillance state presented in the novel into the real life situation happening in the U.K. society.via their public campaign called Stop Covid Passes. The campaign showcases a lot of negative evaluation of the mandatory Covid passes. However, not all agree with the campaign, …
The Road To Hell Is Paved With Vague Intentions: Prosecutorial Development Of 18 U.S.C. § 666 And Its Effect On Local Officials, Theodore Richardson
The Road To Hell Is Paved With Vague Intentions: Prosecutorial Development Of 18 U.S.C. § 666 And Its Effect On Local Officials, Theodore Richardson
Texas A&M Law Review
Over the past century, federal prosecution has expanded to cover behavior without a clear nexus to federal interests. At the same time, the powers of local governments have expanded to areas historically reserved for states. These two trajectories have created a collision course, pitting federal prosecutors against local officials in unexpected ways. Vaguely drafted laws have enabled federal prosecutors to expand their discretionary authority and reach conduct that sits well outside of traditional ideas of criminality.
Corruption is a serious issue that needs to be addressed correctly. But how corruption is addressed and who should address it are two important …
The Colonial Origins Of Institutions In Mauritanina, Mahfoudha Sidelemine
The Colonial Origins Of Institutions In Mauritanina, Mahfoudha Sidelemine
Graduate Research Conference (GSIS)
This paper examines and evaluates the state of development in Mauritania, a former French colony in West Africa. The drivers of (under)development that the paper focuses on are institutions. By focusing on institutions as the main factors that determine the development process of the country, I also focus on the colonial origins of institutions. Hence, in this paper, I draw on Acemoglu and colleagues’ argument on the origin of colonial origins of institutions as they identify two types of colonial institutions—Inclusive and Exclusive (Acemoglu et.al.2001). However, in this research, I argue that there is a third type of institution the …

Tunisia: The Colonized Road To A Democratic Identity, Kara Broene
Tunisia: The Colonized Road To A Democratic Identity, Kara Broene
Graduate Research Conference (GSIS)
The death of one Tunisian man by self-immolation in 2010 created uprisings in 18 other Arab countries in what is known as the 2011 Arab Spring. As a result, Tunisia managed to overthrow its long-standing autocratic government and establish a democracy; it is the only nation who has managed to maintain those changes since 2011. As the first point of protest and the only success story, what makes Tunisia different from the other 18 nations? While there has been research on why Tunisia has succeeded, there is little on how Tunisia’s colonial history under France for 75 years might have …
An Imperfect Solution: The Due Process Case For Providing Court-Appointed Interpreters For Pro Se Plaintiffs, Abdullah Z. Khalil
An Imperfect Solution: The Due Process Case For Providing Court-Appointed Interpreters For Pro Se Plaintiffs, Abdullah Z. Khalil
Texas A&M Law Review
A federal law, the Court Interpreters Act, provides litigants with complimentary access to a qualified or professionally certified interpreter in actions instituted by the United States. The majority of pro se civil litigation in federal courts is initiated by the United States, and thus, those pro se litigants who speak little-to-no English need not pay for access to an exceptional interpreter. Indeed, federal courts offer interpreters proficient in a multitude of languages, and the courts work hard to ensure adequate interpretation in proceedings brought by the United States.
However, those limited-English-proficient pro se plaintiffs initiating their own lawsuits face a …
The Process Theology Of John Elof Boodin, Michael A. Flannery
The Process Theology Of John Elof Boodin, Michael A. Flannery
Libraries Professional Work
Despite his impeccable academic pedigree, a protégé of Josiah Royce and a friend and student of William James, John Elof Boodin is nearly forgotten today among American philosophers; hence, an essential aspect of his thought lost to history is his contribution to process theology. The leading features of process thought demonstrate Boodin’s connections to this unique theology and show it to have been established early on, as early as 1900 and 1904. This places Boodin’s writing on process philosophy/theology well before Alfred North Whitehead, the putative pioneer in modern process metaphysics, by more than twenty years, and co-extensive with Henri …

Writing Mississippi Delta Heritage: The Literary Creation Of Place, Maureen T. Richmond
Writing Mississippi Delta Heritage: The Literary Creation Of Place, Maureen T. Richmond
Student Theses and Dissertations
Since the late twentieth century, scholars of Heritage Studies have spoken of the processual nature of cultural inheritance, claiming that even the most respected traditions are often composed of memory, imagination, and fragments of history combined and artfully assembled. This contemporary analysis of heritage as an ongoing construction or creation shares points of similarity with the process of literary creation. Both blend the observation of fact with the operations of imagination to construct a desired reality. Both can be used to construct a sense of place. Using the paradigm of heritage constructionism, this dissertation examines fiction in the form of …

Recovering The Art Of Testimony, As Embodied Within The Historical Black Church, As A Missionally Formative Practice, Christopher Cobbler
Recovering The Art Of Testimony, As Embodied Within The Historical Black Church, As A Missionally Formative Practice, Christopher Cobbler
DMin Project Theses
This February 2023 Doctor of Ministry project thesis at Lipscomb University aims to consider how the art of testimony, as embodied within the traditional Black church, functions as missionally formative practice. The purpose of this project is to examine the ways testimony service can be utilized to reimagine an alternative eschatological community in a postmodern society. Testimony, in the historical Black Church, was a central component to the life of the congregation; it served as a tool to shape and navigate the theological imagination within a particular community, it cultivated and nurtured centered belonging and was a primary vehicle for …

Abū ʿAmr Ibn Al-ʿAlāʾ (D. 154/770) And Qur’Anic Philology In The Second/Eighth Century, Ali Abdel Latif
Theses and Dissertations
The present study examines Abū ʿAmr ibn al-ʿAlāʾ (d. 154/770), an important scholar whose life coincided with the rise of the various disciplines of Qur’anic philology. I examine his contribution to the field Qur’anic philology, focusing on three distinct yet overlapping genres: Qur’anic chronology, Qur’anic counting, and variant readings. Because these genres were still in development during his time, the material examined in this thesis allows us to examine their state before they reached full development. As we do not have a written corpus by Abū ʿAmr, we will analyse material that was transmitted by his students and preserved in …

Para investigar este fenómeno se realizó un análisis textual computarizado de las categorías gramaticales y los contenidos semántico-funcionales valorativos desde un enfoque cualitativo inductivo-deductivo. Los resultados del estudio mostraron un predominio de los comentarios …
Open Architecture Curricular Design And The Teaching Of Corporate English, Steven J. Sacco, Leonilda Renaldo
Open Architecture Curricular Design And The Teaching Of Corporate English, Steven J. Sacco, Leonilda Renaldo
Global Advances in Business Communication
In this article, the authors describe how Open Architecture Curricular Design is a preferable strategy to fixed Business English curricula offered by traditional providers such as Cambridge English and Berlitz. The authors cite three cases in which OACD, used in blended learning platforms, makes language learning effective. They include (1) Online Safety English, a program designed for nonnative English-speaking agribusiness employees; (2) Boardroom English® designed for senior corporate executives; and (3) The Business Trip, a virtual reality unit designed for the needs of corporations who send their employees abroad. They posit that the use of OACD is a …

Service-Learning In Language For Specific Purposes: A Case Of Korean Language Practicum, Seung-Eun Chang, Jong Hyun Lee, Lee Oh
Global Advances in Business Communication
While service-learning has been greatly acknowledged as an effective instructional tool in education for the past two decades, it has not been extensively applied to the Korean classroom and Language for Specific Purposes (LSP) settings as of yet. The practical challenges of community-involved service-learning for the less commonly taught language (LCTL) programs such as Korean are discussed. Moreover, community engagement through the campus community combined with the language teaching practicum is suggested for service-learning as an alternative to address the challenges. This study explores the curriculum design of a service-learning for a small language group and offers practical ideas on …
Languages For Specific Purposes: Best Practices In Teaching And Learning South Asian And Middle Eastern Languages To Military Personnel, Farid Saydee
Global Advances in Business Communication
Language for Specific Purposes is concerned with the practical use of the target language (Robinson, 1989), such as Arabic for business or English for academic study. Typically, language training programs focus on the development of 1) skills acquisition for general communication, 2) reading skills, and 3) knowledge about cultural differences (Hudson & Brown, 2015). While these skills are essential for meeting the goals of language programs, they fail to prepare learners for practical purposes, especially when it comes to job-specific language needs (McGinn, 2014; USGAO, 2010 & 2002).

Special Issue, Part Ii: Global Advances In Business Communication - World Languages For Specific Purposes: The Future Is Blended, Steven J. Sacco, Diana M. Ruggiero
Global Advances in Business Communication
In the first half of the special issue, we discussed blended learning from four perspectives. In addition to the traditional use of BLENDED--hybrid systems and the adoption of synchronous and asynchronous online teaching, BLENDED referred to four other critical factors:
- The BLENDING of non-U.S. and U.S. educators;
- The BLENDING of traditional WLSP themes (business, engineering) and non-traditional themes (biotechnology and agribusiness);
- The BLENDING of academic, military, and corporate experts; and
- The BLENDING of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Trusting Ai: Integrating Artificial Intelligence Into The Army’S Professional Expert Knowledge, C. Anthony Pfaff, Christopher J. Lowrance, Bre M. Washburn, Brett A. Carey
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
Integrating artificially intelligent technologies for military purposes poses a special challenge. In previous arms races, such as the race to atomic bomb technology during World War II, expertise resided within the Department of Defense. But in the artificial intelligence (AI) arms race, expertise dwells mostly within industry and academia. Also, unlike the development of the bomb, effective employment of AI technology cannot be relegated to a few specialists; almost everyone will have to develop some level of AI and data literacy. Complicating matters is AI-driven systems can be a “black box” in that humans may not be able to explain …
