The De-Indigenisation Of The English Language: On Linguistic Idiosyncrasy, Fayssal Bensalah Apr 2023

The De-Indigenisation Of The English Language: On Linguistic Idiosyncrasy, Fayssal Bensalah

Journal of Creative Writing Studies

This paper introduces and explains a fresh adaptation of linguistic hybridity. This creative strategy is common among postcolonial, transnational and transcultural writers, who would import linguistic features from their first languages to hybridise their prose and paint it with a distinctive identity. I aim, however, to demonstrate that my English text can be hybridised without looking outside the English language, but rather by looking within it. The English language, as I argue, is already a hybrid language, populated by thousands of words borrowed from various languages, including Arabic. The words of this latter, if used intelligently and selectively in my …

The Effect Of Transcutaneous Vagus Nerve Stimulation On Laryngeal Muscle Flexibility With Lexical Tone Imitation., Gracen Friess, Jersey Garoutte, Yiru Yao, Qiang Li Apr 2023

The Effect Of Transcutaneous Vagus Nerve Stimulation On Laryngeal Muscle Flexibility With Lexical Tone Imitation., Gracen Friess, Jersey Garoutte, Yiru Yao, Qiang Li

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

Transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) is a non-invasive technique that applies electrical currents through surface electrodes at selected locations to reorganize the brain neural network based on neuroplasticity. The therapeutic effect of tVNS has been reported related to the sensory neural network, but few studies are on the motor neural network. We hypothesized that when applying the tVNS to the recurrent laryngeal branch of the vagus nerve, the laryngeal muscles responsible for speech will become more flexible, and their motor activities will be enhanced. To examine this hypothesis, Chinese lexical tones were adopted to be imitated by the healthy English …

Name-Based Demographic Inference And The Unequal Distribution Of Misrecognition, Jeffrey W. Lockhart, Molly M. King, Christin Munsch Apr 2023

Name-Based Demographic Inference And The Unequal Distribution Of Misrecognition, Jeffrey W. Lockhart, Molly M. King, Christin Munsch

Sociology

Academics and companies increasingly draw on large datasets to understand the social world, and name-based demographic ascription tools are widespread for imputing information that is often missing from these large datasets. These approaches have drawn criticism on ethical, empirical and theoretical grounds. Using a survey of all authors listed on articles in sociology, economics and communication journals in Web of Science between 2015 and 2020, we compared self-identified demographics with name-based imputations of gender and race/ethnicity for 19,924 scholars across four gender ascription tools and four race/ethnicity ascription tools. We found substantial inequalities in how these tools misgender and misrecognize …

Afrikaans Taboo Words: Offensiveness Ranking And Reflections In Usage, Rebecca Brenkman Apr 2023

Afrikaans Taboo Words: Offensiveness Ranking And Reflections In Usage, Rebecca Brenkman

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis analyzes the offensiveness of Afrikaans taboo words gathered from an online survey and cross-compares it to grammatical constructions and functionality as displayed in an Afrikaans corpus. Culturally speaking, Afrikaans has a rich history of taboo terminology, especially in the racial category. The historical importance of taboo terms aids in understanding the evolution of the offensiveness of terms, especially as influenced by factors such as politics, attitude shifts, younger generations, etc. Results from the online survey focused primarily on the White Afrikaans-speaking population, as minimal responses were gathered from other ethnic groups. Additional findings from the survey indicated that …

Covid-19'S Effects On Students' Educational Growth, Anna Chavez Maples

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has affected the education system drastically and created many challenges for families as well as schools. When schools moved to online and virtual learning, many students began to fall behind in their education and the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) became harder for schools to meet. The following research explored the effects the pandemic caused in schools and how far behind students are today with their education and socialization. The results of this research will share ways to help today’s students catch up in their education so that they can reach their full potential.

Experiences Of Post-Master's Arts Based Supervision With Art Therapists Of Color, Madoka Urhausen Apr 2023

Experiences Of Post-Master's Arts Based Supervision With Art Therapists Of Color, Madoka Urhausen

Expressive Therapies Dissertations

ABSTRACT

This study explored experiences of art therapists of color who underwent post-master’s arts-based supervision (ABS) to obtain an art therapy credential. ABS emphasizes creation of clinical insight and knowledge through not only reviewing and evaluating client’s art and art processes but also having supervisees to engage in their own artmaking in response to their clinical work. The sample was chosen for their intersectional identities that added a layer of complexity to their identity formation. This qualitative phenomenological study employed Culturally Responsive Focus Group (CRFG) with Arts-based Research (ABR) methodology to explore two questions: (1) What are the experiences of …

Embodied, Simulation-Based Cognition: A Hybrid Approach, Sean Christopher Kugele Apr 2023

Embodied, Simulation-Based Cognition: A Hybrid Approach, Sean Christopher Kugele

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Embodied cognition is a paradigm in cognitive science that emphasizes the fundamental role of bodies, environmental interactions, situational contexts, and sensory and motor systems in cognitive processing. Much of the research in embodied cognition has focused on online cognitive activities (such as reactive, overt behaviors) that are directly coupled to environmental stimuli. Such research fails to explain offline cognitive activities (such as planning, deliberation, and mental imagery) that are spatially or temporally decoupled from one’s immediate sensory experiences. Embodied, simulation-based theories of cognition attempt to address this shortcoming by proposing a mechanism—modal simulations—by which sensory and motor systems can directly …

Deictic Pointing And Demonstrative Usage In American Sign Language, Paul Twitchell Apr 2023

Deictic Pointing And Demonstrative Usage In American Sign Language, Paul Twitchell

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

American Sign Language (ASL), like many different signed languages, has a systematic way of using pointing signs for multiple types of nominal reference. Possibly the most basic function of pointing is to indicate, direct and modulate reference to physical objects located in proximal and distal areas called exophoric demonstratives.

This study aims to investigate ASL exophoric demonstratives and how ASL fits within the different typological systems of demonstratives that have been documented (Diessel & Coventry, 2020). Several research questions focus on how signers direct attention to proximal and distal referents in ASL using an elicitation task. The two studies (adult …

How Resilience Is Framed Matters For Governance Of Coastal Social-Ecological Systems, Sarah Clement, Javad Jozaei, Michael Mitchell, Craig R. Allen, Ahjond S. Garmestani

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Effective governance of social-ecological systems (SES) is an enduring challenge, especially in coastal environments where accelerating impacts of climate change are increasing pressure on already stressed systems. While resilience is often proposed as a suitable framing to re-orient governance and management, the literature includes many different, and sometimes conflicting, definitions and ideas that influence how the concept is applied, especially in coastal environments. This study combines discourse analysis of the coastal governance literature and key informant interviews in Tasmania, Australia, demonstrating inconsistencies and confusion in the way that resilience is framed in coastal governance research and practice. We find that …

Investigating Iraqi Efl University Students' Use Of Key Morphological Terms, Yousuf Taresh Hilal Jabur Al Amaya, Elhaj Ali Adam Esmaeil Apr 2023

Investigating Iraqi Efl University Students' Use Of Key Morphological Terms, Yousuf Taresh Hilal Jabur Al Amaya, Elhaj Ali Adam Esmaeil

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

The current study investigates the Iraqi college learners' abilities to handle morphological terms as a main part of EFL learners' grammatical competence. In this study, morphological terms are classified into two types: General Morphological Terms and Word-Formation Terms. It is worth mentioning that this study is restricted to the morphological terms that are of concern to the EFL university students because such terms represent rather important part of grammar, than minor concepts and details. After surveying such terms, the researcher devised a questionnaire prepared for a representative sample of (100) Iraqi EFL college students randomly chosen from the 3rd year …

"Azat, Ankakh, Artsakh": Music, Memory, And The Second Nagorno-Karabakh War, Sasha Linn Arteaga

Music ETDs

In this thesis, I examine a selection of music videos, from those created in 2015 at the centenary of the Armenian Genocide, to those created in response to the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War, considered by Armenians to be a continuation of the Armenian Genocide. To the Armenian people, Nagorno-Karabakh is part of their ethnic homeland and has maintained a majority-Armenian population and separatist government backed by the Republic of Armenia since the First Nagorno-Karabakh War. I apply a music-as-text approach in this thesis, examining these music videos through examination of the visual, musical, and lyrical elements. I then analyze these videos …

Written Corrective Feedback And Learner Engagement: A Case Study Of A French As A Second Language Program, Maria-Lourdes Lira-Gonzales, Antonella Valeo

Journal of Response to Writing

Within the context of second language (L2) writing, learner engagement with feedback has elicited significant theoretical and empirical interest (e.g., Zhang & Hyland, 2018; Zheng & Yu, 2018). Research has highlighted the dynamic nature of learner engagement with corrective feedback (WCF), but the ways in which learner and contextual factors impact such engagement with WCF in authentic classrooms are still underexplored (Han, 2019). Furthermore, little is known about how L2 learners engage with WCF from an ecological perspective, which considers the relationships between learners and their surrounding environments (Bronfenbrenner,1993; van Lier, 2000).

Situated in an adult French as a second …

Making Dramatic Literature More Accessible And Relevant To High School Students, Jessica R. Buttell, Leah Nillas, Faculty Advisor Apr 2023

Making Dramatic Literature More Accessible And Relevant To High School Students, Jessica R. Buttell, Leah Nillas, Faculty Advisor

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

I conducted a self-study to examine how teachers can make dramatic literature more accessible and relevant to students of different backgrounds in a high school English classroom. Dramatic literature in this case can be defined as literary works written with the intent to be performed on the stage and shares the following defining characteristics: acts, scenes, stage directions, dialogue, and a cast of characters. Starting in September of 2022, I began collecting data with field notes, anecdotal records, student teacher weekly reflections, university supervisor observation comments, informal surveys, lesson plans, and student work samples. The lesson plans outlined learning objectives, …

Effects Of Curricular Integration Of Students’ Identities, Reanne B. Rivera, Leah A. Nillas, Faculty Advisor Apr 2023

Effects Of Curricular Integration Of Students’ Identities, Reanne B. Rivera, Leah A. Nillas, Faculty Advisor

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

The curricular integration of students’ cultural identities is a critical component of maximizing students’ learning as educators bridge their students’ lived experiences and cultural backgrounds to their learning (Ladson-Billings, 1995). Another component of students’ identities entails their learning styles. When students’ preferred learning styles are implemented into the classroom they showed higher levels of academic achievement and engagement (Lauria, 2010). A final component of students’ identities explored in this classroom research includes students’ interests. Engagement is learning when students’ choices and interests are considered for their learning (Beecher & Sweeney, 2008). The significance of this research project is to analyze …

Evolving Scientific Vocabulary And Language In Middle School Classrooms: Babbling And Gargling On The Way To Scientific Understanding, Merryn Cole, Thomas Ryan, Jennifer Wilhelm Apr 2023

Evolving Scientific Vocabulary And Language In Middle School Classrooms: Babbling And Gargling On The Way To Scientific Understanding, Merryn Cole, Thomas Ryan, Jennifer Wilhelm

Taboo: The Journal of Culture and Education

While scientific vocabulary is important, it can often become problematic for students. Sometimes, those words can become a barrier to participation or act as a gatekeeper to success in the science classroom. Under the Next Generation Science Standards, middle school students are expected to model Earth-Moon-Sun motions to explain Moon phases, eclipses, and seasons (NGSS Lead States, 2013). Using a phenomenography lens, we investigated the ways in which students seeing the Moon in nature and related classroom experiences translate into a mental model of lunar phases and how vocabulary is used to communicate these models. Eighth-grade students from three urban …

Higher Education Students’ Perceptions Of Online Learning During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Abby O’Bryant

Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research

This article focuses on the impacts of online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic on students at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo. Using survey data (n = 64) and semistructured interviews with currently enrolled students (n = 17), key impacts of online learning on the student body were analyzed. The respondents reported disengagement in lectures, negative impacts on their mental and physical health, negative thoughts about dropping out and transferring, apprehension about the quality of course content, and dissatisfaction with tuition. The paper utilizes qualitative data analysis to report the findings.

"'Joo Wa Dare?' Who Is The Queen?" Queen Contests During The Wartime Incarceration Of Japanese Americans, Bailey Irene Midori Hoy

Madison Historical Review

This paper examines beauty pageants held at incarceration centers during the Japanese-American internment. Although there has been literature created on beauty pageants before and after WWII, there is very little information on these war-era pageants, despite their prolific nature. Using mostly primary sources and material culture, the paper examines the coverage of the contestants, clothing, and presentation within the Center’s newspapers and in coverage by the Wartime Relocation Authority, whilst also problematizing uncritical readings of these documents. This paper highlights the difficulty in determining agency within spaces of incarceration, and calls for further research on the subject.
