Spiritual And Material Boundaries In Old French Verse: Contemplating The Walls Of The Earthly Paradise, Jacob Abell Sep 2023

Spiritual And Material Boundaries In Old French Verse: Contemplating The Walls Of The Earthly Paradise, Jacob Abell

Research in Medieval and Early Modern Culture

The Earthly Paradise was a vibrant symbol at the heart of medieval Christian geographies of the cosmos. As humanity’s primal home now lost through the sins of Adam of Eve, the Earthly Paradise figured prominently in Old French tales of lands beyond the mundane world. This study proposes a fresh look at the complex roles played by the Earthly Paradise in three medieval French poems: Marie de France’s The Purgatory of St. Patrick, Benedeit’s Voyage of Saint Brendan the Abbot, and Guillaume de Lorris’s The Romance of the Rose. By examining the literary, cultural, and artistic components that informed each …

Joint Intent Detection And Slot Filling For Turkish Natural Language Understanding, Osman Büyük Sep 2023

Joint Intent Detection And Slot Filling For Turkish Natural Language Understanding, Osman Büyük

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Intent detection and slot filling are two crucial subtasks of a text-based goal-oriented dialogue system. In a goal-oriented dialogue system, users interact with the system to complete a goal (or to fulfill their intent) and provide the necessary information (slot values) to achieve that goal. Therefore, a user?s text input includes information about the user?s intent and contains required slot values. Recently, joint models that simultaneously detect the intent and extract the slots are proposed to benefit from the interaction between the two tasks. The proposed methods are usually tested using benchmark data sets in English such as ATIS and …

A Machine Learning Approach For Dyslexia Detection Using Turkish Audio Records, Tuğberk Taş, Muhammed Abdullah Bülbül, Abas Haşi̇moğlu, Yavuz Meral, Yasi̇n Çalişkan, Gunay Budagova, Mücahi̇d Kutlu

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Dyslexia is a learning disorder, characterized by impairment in the ability to read, spell, and decode letters. It is vital to detect dyslexia in earlier stages to reduce its effects. However, diagnosing dyslexia is a time-consuming and costly process. In this paper, we propose a machine-learning model that predicts whether a Turkish-speaking child has dyslexia using his/her audio records. Therefore, our model can be easily used by smart phones and work as a warning system such that children who are likely to be dyslexic according to our model can seek an examination by experts. In order to train and evaluate, …

Poetry As Space In Medicine, Esther Kentish Sep 2023

Poetry As Space In Medicine, Esther Kentish

Stimulus: A Medical Humanities Journal

Poetry as a space in medicine can be depicted as a nuanced caveat of narrative and medicine. Patient voices can be prominently showcased emerging from written communications, interviews in the clinic, as well as in acts of self-expression. Writing and reading of patient-doctor memoirs and fiction such as “A Mango Shaped Space” by Wendy Mass story and Joyce’s Ulysses can help to situate patient voices and knowledge within medical spaces. The thematic nature of doctor-patient interactions are important because patient voices provide an exchange of critical information and pose a critical look at the patient’s view of their own dis-ease …

BACKGROUND: A variety of medications are available to manage painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN), but the proper treatment remains challenging. Accordingly, various neuromodulation modalities have been used. However, no prospective clinical trials have evaluated the use of scrambler therapy (ST) in painful DPN. This study aimed to explore the long-term effects of ST in managing painful DPN.

METHODS: The patients received 10 consecutive STs of 45 minutes every 1 to 2 days. The primary outcome was pain score. We measured the visual analog scale (VAS) pain scores at baseline, during ST, immediately after ST, and at 1, 2, 3, and …

The No-Self Thesis: Counterarguments From Abnormal Psychology, Elma Berisha Sep 2023

The No-Self Thesis: Counterarguments From Abnormal Psychology, Elma Berisha

UBT International Conference

The no-self thesis is said to originate in David Hume’s (1739) “bundle theory of self,” questioning the human self as a mere bundle of fleeting perceptions without ontological reality. In contemporary discourse, the self is sandwiched between top-down and bottom-up reductionisms: those with biological and cognitive arguments that reduce the self to a lower, ontological level, on the one hand, and those who hold cultural-linguistic constructionist positions, on the other hand, reducing the self to a higher level. In both cases, self reductionism is a prelude to complete self elimination. On these conceptions, what we call “self” may be nothing …

Text Recycling (Aka “Self-Plagiarism") In Research Writing: Thorny Issues And Best Practices, Cary Moskovitz

Bear GRADS

Researchers often have reason to reuse content from their prior papers in their new ones (descriptions of methods, background material, theoretical frameworks, and so on). Some uses of text recycling are widely considered appropriate; others are universally condemned. Given the variety of ways that researchers might recycle text, they are often unsure about what is and isn't ethical or legal. This talk will present the ethical and legal complexities of text recycling in research writing, present a new taxonomy of text recycling, and explain best practices for recycling material across a range of research contexts.

The Reliability And Validity Of A Mlct-Scale For The Assessment Of Kindergarten Children, Mohammad A. Al-Zu’Bi

Information Sciences Letters

This study was derived from the review of literature on motivation to learn, and creative thinking, in kindergarten children. While both these themes are explored reasonably in depth, there is very little research on motivation to learn creative thinking, which is a pillar of educational development. The researcher found the reason was that there was no Scale to measure this aspect, and so he constructed a new Motivation to Learn Creative Thinking Scale (MLCT-Scale) among kindergarten children. He also investigated the psychometric characteristics of the Scale. This Scale construction and investigation findings are reported here. The methodology used in this …

Early Childhood Education Language Environments: Considerations For Research And Practice, Jennifer Finders, Ella Wilson, Robert Duncan Sep 2023

Early Childhood Education Language Environments: Considerations For Research And Practice, Jennifer Finders, Ella Wilson, Robert Duncan

Department of Human Development and Family Sciences Faculty Publications

The importance of developing early language and literacy skills is acknowledged by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as a global human rights issue. Indeed, research suggests that language abilities are foundational for a host of cognitive, behavioral, and social–emotional outcomes. Therefore, it is critical to provide experiences that foster language acquisition across early learning settings. Central to these efforts is incorporating assessments of language environments into research and practice to drive quality improvement. Yet, several barriers may be preventing language environment assessments from becoming widely integrated into early education. In this brief, we review evidence on …

The Ozarks Mountain region has a rich and lengthy cultural heritage. This heritage includes the creation of crafts with attributes unique to the Ozarks. In 1978 the Ozarks Regional Commission, a federal-state partnership, conducted a survey of crafts and craftsmen in the Ozarks. This thesis examines using digitized images of 35mm slides from the report Crafts: The Human Dimension to build a web exhibit about the history and culture of the Ozarks Mountain Region. The topics covered include geography, migration patterns, and craft items of the region.
