Let Them Play! Integrating More Play Into Kindergarten Curriculum And Classrooms, Danielle N. Johnson
Let Them Play! Integrating More Play Into Kindergarten Curriculum And Classrooms, Danielle N. Johnson
Masters Projects
Research reinforces how play in the classroom can greatly benefit students in academic, social, emotional and behavioral ways. Today, students in kindergarten are being pressured to adhere to rigorous academic standards .While teachers are centering instruction around these standards, play is no longer seen as an essential piece of the classroom. The standards in kindergarten are becoming more intense and similar to higher grade levels. Developmentally, play can be a very advantageous way to help students grow in literacy and their learning. With scaffolding and modeling, teachers have the opportunity to teach through play and give students space to grow …
When It Happens Here: Reproductive Autonomy, Fascism, And Dobbs V. Jackson Women’S Health Organization, Robin Maril
When It Happens Here: Reproductive Autonomy, Fascism, And Dobbs V. Jackson Women’S Health Organization, Robin Maril
Pace Law Review
Within six months after the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, nineteen states passed laws prohibiting abortion within the first trimester. The most restrictive laws banned abortion entirely, except to save the life of the person giving birth. The Court’s eager abdication of its role in protecting individual liberty under the 14th amendment marks a grim chapter in the life cycle of American democracy. The Dobbs decision, along with the political environment that demanded the repeal of Roe v. Wade, promises to severely limit the role of women in public life. The specter …

Originalism After Dobbs, Bruen, And Kennedy: The Role Of History And Tradition, Randy E. Barnett, Lawrence B. Solum
Originalism After Dobbs, Bruen, And Kennedy: The Role Of History And Tradition, Randy E. Barnett, Lawrence B. Solum
Northwestern University Law Review
In three recent cases, the constitutional concepts of history and tradition have played important roles in the reasoning of the Supreme Court. Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization relied on history and tradition to overrule Roe v. Wade. New York State Rifle & Pistol Ass’n v. Bruen articulated a history and tradition test for the validity of laws regulating the right to bear arms recognized by the Second Amendment. Kennedy v. Bremerton School District looked to history and tradition in formulating the test for the consistency of state action with the Establishment Clause.
These cases raise important questions about …

Trcaptionnet: A Novel And Accurate Deep Turkish Image Captioning Model With Vision Transformer Based Image Encoders And Deep Linguistic Text Decoders, Serdar Yildiz, Abbas Memi̇ş, Songül Varli
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Image captioning is known as a fundamental computer vision task aiming to figure out and describe what is happening in an image or image region. Through an image captioning process, it is ensured to describe and define the actions and the relations of the objects within the images. In this manner, the contents of the images can be understood and interpreted automatically by visual computing systems. In this paper, we proposed the TRCaptionNet a novel deep learning-based Turkish image captioning (TIC) model for the automatic generation of Turkish captions. The model we propose essentially consists of a basic image encoder, …

Infrared Imaging Segmentation Employing An Explainable Deep Neural Network, Xinfei Liao, Dan Wang, Zairan Li, Nilanjan Dey, Rs Simon, Fuqian Shi
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Explainable AI (XAI) improved by a deep neural network (DNN) of a residual neural network (ResNet) and long short-term memory networks (LSTMs), termed XAIRL, is proposed for segmenting foot infrared imaging datasets. First, an infrared sensor imaging dataset is acquired by a foot infrared sensor imaging device and preprocessed. The infrared sensor image features are then defined and extracted with XAIRL being applied to segment the dataset. This paper compares and discusses our results with XAIRL. Evaluation indices are applied to perform various measurements for foot infrared image segmentation including accuracy, precision, recall, F1 score, intersection over union (IoU), Dice …

Solving A Sixth Amendment Crisis: The Case For Resource Parity In Georgia’S Indigent Defense System, Meagan R. Hurley
Solving A Sixth Amendment Crisis: The Case For Resource Parity In Georgia’S Indigent Defense System, Meagan R. Hurley
Mercer Law Review Symposium
The United States criminal legal system employs what is said to be an “adversary” system—one in which opposing parties—the prosecution and the defense—present their evidence and arguments (usually in conflict with one another) to a neutral third party (a judge or jury) for adjudication. The idea behind the adversarial process is that a judge or jury is best positioned to make determinations of guilt or innocence once provided with reliable information from competent, zealous, and prepared advocates on both sides of the podium. At its core, the adversarial system is meant to function as the mechanism by which constitutional principles …

Chapter Vi —The Radicalization Of Ethiopian Students, Messay Kebede
Ethiopian Modernization: Opportunities and Derailments
When one analyzes the Ethiopian Revolution of 1974, the aspect that needs to be primarily explained is not so much the uprising against the imperial regime as its precipitous shift toward socialist demands and slogans. Many unsolved problems liable to provoke widespread discontents saddled the regime. None of them, however, required or invited a socialist revolution per se. The decisive impulse toward a socialist revolution came undoubtedly from the Ethiopian student movement. Accordingly, any inquiry about the revolution must begin by unraveling the reasons that brought about the radicalization of a great majority of Ethiopian students and intellectuals. A compelling …

When humans begin learning new motor skills, they typically display early rapid performance improvements. It is not well understood how knowledge acquired during this early skill learning period generalizes to new, related skills. Here, we addressed this question by investigating factors influencing generalization of early learning from a skill A to a different, but related skill B. Early skill generalization was tested over four experiments (N = 2095). Subjects successively learned two related motor sequence skills (skills A and B) over different practice schedules. Skill A and B sequences shared ordinal (i.e., matching keypress locations), transitional (i.e., ordered keypress pairs), …

Designing A Program To Develop Computer Science Master Teachers For An Underserved Rural Area, Susie Morrissey, Thomas Koballa, Robert Allen, Judy Godfrey, Michael Dias, Shawn Utley, Deannia Clements
Journal of STEM Teacher Education
Due to a shortage of rural computer science teachers, researchers used a three-phase method to design a computer science endorsement, which will be coupled with an instructional coaching endorsement within an Educational Specialist degree program. The team conducted interviews of teachers as well as school and district level administrators in rural areas to determine needs and resources available to develop computer science master teachers. Interviewers also investigated recruitment, preparation and support processes pertinent to the program. Findings included that, although infrastructure for wireless access is lacking, school and district administrators are very interested in supporting teachers to become computer science …

Drawing on an online professional development modular course that addressed critical approaches to the issues of race, immigration, English Language Learners (ELLs)/Emerging Bilinguals (EBs), and gender and sexual orientation, this paper reports teachers’ perceptions on gender stereotypes in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education. In particular, building on the course readings, we discuss teachers’ emergent approaches to address gender stereotypes in teaching practice that improve girls' participation in STEM fields. Data is collected from a pre-course survey and teachers’ discussions during the course. Centering on the course readings from theoretical and empirical research that address gender issues, discussion prompts …
