A Criticism Of The Argument From Vagueness For Unrestricted Composition, Peter Tan
A Criticism Of The Argument From Vagueness For Unrestricted Composition, Peter Tan
International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities
A subject of much recent philosophical discussion is the thesis that for any finite class of objects, the xs, there is necessarily an object composed of those xs. Composition is unrestricted. Some support for this view arises from concerns about whether composition can be a vague matter. Ted Sider offers an ‘argument from vagueness’ in defense of unrestricted mereological composition which relies heavily on the premise that composition cannot be vague. However, he endorses a particular view of vagueness which, I propose, commits him to abandoning certain premises of his argument. I will defend Sider’s charge that composition cannot be …
Improper Parts, Restricted Existence, And Use: Three Arguments Against Ted Sider's Four-Dimensionalism, Mike Anthony
Improper Parts, Restricted Existence, And Use: Three Arguments Against Ted Sider's Four-Dimensionalism, Mike Anthony
International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities
This paper raises and defends three classes of objections to Ted Sider's argument from vagueness in his recent work, Four-Dimensionalism. The first class argues that Sider's case for four-dimensionalism is superfluous, that is, “mereologically promiscuous three-dimensionalists” can accept his argument yet maintain a compatible variety of three-dimensionalism that accepts the existence of temporal parts as improper parts of otherwise enduring wholes. Second, Sider's argument begs the question of unrestricted composition by presupposing an unrestricted conception of objecthood that the three-dimensionalist can freely reject. Finally, Sider's project offends ontology by undermining a deep ontological distinction between temporal existence and extension. Even …

As the global markets communicate in a swift speed, the mainstream culture has outweighed the regional cultures. The most effective way to pass down cultures to next generations is have children get involved with listening and speaking from the media, especially the cartoon animations. It has played an important part in each kid’s childhood and his/her development. How to create the most influential regional kids cartoon expressing its local culture is the main study topic in this article. This study is trying to work out the key element design for local kid's cartoon animations in Min-nam language in Taiwan through …

Tribal communities use locally available resources to fulfil their daily needs in India. Santhal and Mohli tribes in Jharkhand, India have an intergenerational skill of using bamboo and other natural fibres to make utility crafts like baskets and mats, which is used as a part of their lifestyle. However, it was limited in terms of product range and market reach, which resulted in the tribes’ livelihood stagnancy and other financial difficulties. Therefore, the objective of this research was design intervention and product development based on collaborative designing, as the researchers were outside of the tribal community. And also to propose …
Changing Perspective On Social Inclusion And Design: Exploring The Concept Of Designing For Inclusive Attitudes, Daniele Busciantella-Ricci
Changing Perspective On Social Inclusion And Design: Exploring The Concept Of Designing For Inclusive Attitudes, Daniele Busciantella-Ricci
IASDR Conference Series
The pandemic increased disparities and exacerbated pre-existing inequalities. Attitudinal barriers and discrimination were also exacerbated by the pandemic effects. Some diversity conditions suffered more than others post-pandemic status because their needs were not embedded in the pandemic planning prior to COVID-19. Also, the pandemic effects underlined the importance of embedding Inclusion, Diversity, Equality and Accessibility strategies in complex contexts such as in healthcare systems. Therefore, the paper focuses on how improving inclusive attitudes through design for fighting discrimination and promoting diversity in society. However, traditional design for inclusion approaches does not provide instruments to address this aspect. Consequently, the paper …
Designing The Interaction Between Humans And Autonomous Systems: The Role Of Behavioral Science., Dirk Van Rooy
Designing The Interaction Between Humans And Autonomous Systems: The Role Of Behavioral Science., Dirk Van Rooy
IASDR Conference Series
In recent years, the use of autonomous systems has grown rapidly in both the industrial and military sectors. These systems have the potential to revolutionize the way we live and work, from self-driving cars and drones to automated factories and military equipment. However, it has been argued, for this to happen, researchers and designers need to (re)consider the interaction between humans and machines, as it plays a significant role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of autonomous systems (De Regt & Gagnon, 2020; Janssen et al., 2019). In this paper, I will argue that a closer integration with applied …

Fostering Social Inclusion: Empathic Approaches For Migrant-Centred Design, Vanessa Cesário, Paulo Bala, Shuhao Ma, Valentina Nisi
IASDR Conference Series
In recent decades, the field of design, particularly interaction design, has brought attention to the experiences of migrants with technology. A key aspect of this research has been the active involvement of displaced communities in the design process, through the implementation of empathic design approaches. These approaches place significant value on subjective and experiential perspectives fostering a thought process in which individuals seek to understand others by relating to their experiences. Following this empathic approach, this work focuses on the design for and with migrants, by engaging long-term migrants through a focus group and a participatory activity. The aim of …

Will the design system be emancipated enough to contribute to the transformation processes of identities in different cultural contexts? The notion of identity constitutes a fundamental axis for reflecting on design’s renewal and transformations. Identity is not immutable; it transforms with growth and social changes from a multicultural and intercultural perspective. The paper critiques the contributions submitted to the Identities and [Changing] Identities track for the tenth Congress of the International Association of Societies of Design Research (IASDR 2023). The contributions reflect on four main areas: cultural identity concerning the identity roots of design, the authorial identities with their poetics, …

Design thinking is a human-centered innovative strategy often used by teams to come up with novel, inventive solutions to problems. The collaborations often yield more innovative results than do individual efforts. In recent years, because of the impact of the pandemic, collaborative design thinking has not been limited to face-to-face discussions; rather, more workshops have been introducing online collaboration software as a discussion tool. The purpose of this study was to capture the key aspects of process gain and loss that affected team effectiveness in short-term design workshops, provide feedback and further optimize workshops. To address the research goal, study …
Guiding Into The Unknown. A Dialogue Between Design And Yoga For Mindful Design Education, Estelle Berger
Guiding Into The Unknown. A Dialogue Between Design And Yoga For Mindful Design Education, Estelle Berger
IASDR Conference Series
This paper builds on wider research studying designers’ posture, understood as the specific way in which professional activity is invested, given substance, meaning and justification. Awareness on posture is even more important in design teaching and leadership, as individuals take responsibility for guiding others. But, in complex and uncertain environments, knowledge holding has become less important than continuous learning. “Guiding into the unknown” questions the meaning and very possibility of accompanying intimate processes of transformation, far beyond professional training as commonly understood. Outside of content, what emerges in such relationships? In this investigation, yoga is mobilized as a both philosophical …

In the context of a complex social matrix that we find ourselves in, described by the continuous flux of power relations and asymmetries; design as a practice, their practitioners and researchers carry the responsibility in the mindful shaping of the future. As mediators within the design system, designers carry the conversation between the design program, a hypothesis, the stakeholders, and the effects of the resulting conclusions. Within their practice and the reflexive process upon it, designers can question, critique, and dismantle oppressive systems of status quo perpetuation. A first approach to a critical dialogue in design suggests reviewing one’s identity …

The paper investigates gender biases and stereotypes in the design of conversational interfaces such as chatbots and virtual assistants. Recently the topic has received a growing attention in the design community. In our research, we focus on the issue of the lack of diversity and viewpoints that may unintentionally create services that are biased towards a particular group of users, while ignoring the needs and perspectives of others. To address this issue, we organised a speculative design workshop inviting 9 people with different gender and sexual identity to reflect on gender biases in conversational interfaces with the ultimate objective of …
Living Entanglement: Toward An Entangled Design Nexus, Clee Zhuo Wang, Laurent Laurent Gutierrez
Living Entanglement: Toward An Entangled Design Nexus, Clee Zhuo Wang, Laurent Laurent Gutierrez
IASDR Conference Series
Human-nature encounters more and more take forms of conflict, struggle, resistance and denial. Beneath the surface question of “how to survive”, these encounters reveal “entanglement” as the fundamental condition of the world. This new world view, supported by systems thinking and posthumanism, radicalizes the anthropocentric reductionistic belief. The shift informs a reposition of design from a method to produce (techne) to an invitation to co-becoming (phronesis). This article starts with a cross-disciplinary literature review to elaborate the concept of “entanglement” in three levels: relationality, co-becoming and blurred subject / object division. Then, the field work of an ecoliteracy program (“The …
Decolonizing Creativity In The Digital Era, Laura Herman, Payal Arora
Decolonizing Creativity In The Digital Era, Laura Herman, Payal Arora
IASDR Conference Series
This paper explores the importance of decolonizing creativity in the digital era within the context of the platformised creator economy. We argue that technology has largely been designed for Western audiences by Western audiences, thereby overlooking an enormous segment of global Internet users who exist outside of the Global North. To take a truly inclusive approach to design research, it is imperative to consider local impacts and vernacular realities of designed platforms. Therefore, we share the results of fieldwork conducted with young people in India to produce a non-Western, decolonial perspective on digital creativity and algorithmic cultures. In sharing these …

Recent years have shown a remarkable advancement in making neural technologies accessible, transcending the confines of clinical settings, with companies introducing neural hardware once limited to specialized environments. Concurrently, scientific research has made significant strides in demonstrating the effectiveness of neurofeedback as a closed-loop system, enabling individuals to regulate neural signals consciously. While studies focus on individual-based learning, emerging evidence suggests that NF can facilitate neural synchronicity among multiple individuals. To optimize NF and achieve favorable neuro-behavioral outcomes, recent investigations propose integration of immersive interfaces that provide a holistic and meaningful learning experience. However, a disconnect between scientists and designers …

Chapter Iii — The Ethiopian Forces Of Survival, Messay Kebede
Chapter Iii — The Ethiopian Forces Of Survival, Messay Kebede
Ethiopian Modernization: Opportunities and Derailments
To account for the protracted endurance of Ethiopia, the last chapter hinted at two requisites, namely, a system of power suited for defense and the sense of shouldering a mandate. Such a successful record, in addition to presupposing a robust and effective ability for self-defense, necessitates a leadership that feels entrusted with a mission. From a cursory examination of Ethiopian history, one can confidently surmise that, at least until the overthrow of the last emperor, Ethiopia survived for so long thanks to a system of power that was protective of survival and bearer of a mission. The system rested on …
