Autodocking Studies Of Oxygenated Fullerenes As Inhibitors Of The Hiv Protease, Michael Kaminski
Autodocking Studies Of Oxygenated Fullerenes As Inhibitors Of The Hiv Protease, Michael Kaminski
All Student Theses and Dissertations
In a previous study, several oxygenated fullerene compounds were produced by ozonation of C60 (Buckminsterfullerene) and were identified by elemental analysis and by SALI (surface analysis by laser ionization). Some of these compounds, especially a batch, SK-5, a mixture of C60O1-8, were shown to inhibit activities of HIV-Protease with IC50 (concentration for 50% inhibition) of 1 mg/mol in the in-vitro studies. The oxygenated fullerenes were shown to have epoxide, ketones, and hydroxyl functionalities. As expected, C60 interacted with ozone with alkene functionality and not as an aromatic compound. It was postulated that C60O had epoxide functionality, as a product of …

Psychotherapist advice, suggestions, and recommendations (ASR) occur in many psychotherapy sessions and most treatment approaches. This chapter defines ASR, provides clinical examples, and reviews the research evidence for the immediate in-session, immediate delayed, and intermediate effects of ASR, as well as for the moderators of these effects in individual psychotherapy. In seven studies with 327 clients and 131 therapists, evidence of neutral immediate in-session outcomes (e.g., client experiencing levels), neutral immediate delayed outcomes (e.g., client-rated helpfulness during post-session videotape reviews), and positive intermediate outcomes (e.g., implementation of recommendations as rated in subsequent sessions) was found for ASR. These differences may …

Synthesizing Energy Transitions, Danielle Stokes, Nadia Ahmad, Uma Outka, Hannah Wiseman
Law Faculty Publications
This Article assesses the growing and cross-disciplinary literature on energy transitions to explore how it can guide law and policy reforms for the energy sector. The modern conception of energy transition centers primarily on clean energy—a shift away from fossil energy dependence. It also, however, incorporates equity as a core principle, as an increasing emphasis on energy justice and just transition seeks to create guiding norms for the energy sector’s current state of change. The concept of energy transition is critical for describing and giving meaning to a fundamental societal shift at the local, regional, national, and global scales, aligned …

The construct of ocean identity provides a valuable lens that can unpack the multiple dimensions of human connections with ocean spaces, and crucially places importance on the integration of cognitive, affective, and behavioral components. The construct of ocean identity is applicable in academic and professional contexts, and is largely unexplored from both qualitative and quantitative research perspectives. This comment article presents a revised definition of ocean identity and posits a useful conceptual framework based on a robust analysis of literature to unveil the multiple dimensions that may explain an individuals’ ocean identity. Here we identify a series of attributes that …
A Wrong Turn With The Rights Of Nature Movement, Noah M. Sachs
A Wrong Turn With The Rights Of Nature Movement, Noah M. Sachs
Law Faculty Publications
Environmentalists have long dreamed of granting enforceable legal rights to nature, and their vision has recently become reality. Governments in the United States and abroad are enacting Rights of Nature laws, and many scholars have championed this burgeoning movement as one of the best hopes for preserving the environment.
Legal rights for nature seem visionary, but policymakers and scholars are overlooking considerable problems with this approach. This Article spotlights these problems, including the vague and incoherent content of nature’s rights, the difficulty of defining the boundaries of natural entities, the absence of limiting principles for the rights, and the legislation’s …
Reimagining Langdell's Legacy: Puncturing The Equilibrium In Law School Pedagogy, Laura A. Webb
Reimagining Langdell's Legacy: Puncturing The Equilibrium In Law School Pedagogy, Laura A. Webb
Law Faculty Publications
For more than 150 years, legal education has largely followed the course charted by Christopher Columbus Langdell when he became dean of Harvard Law School in 1870. Langdell’s innovations included the case method, high-stakes summative assessments, and preferences for faculty members with experience in “learning law” rather than practicing it. His proposals were innovative and responsive to challenges in legal education at the time, but this Article argues that taking Langdell’s approach to reform—including a willingness toimplement radical changes in the face of institutional shortcomings—requires reimagining his methods for the benefit of today’s students. We identify key deficiencies of the …

The COVID-19 pandemic prompted extraordinary state action to protect American children. Acting in its longstanding role as parens patriae, the state stepped in to protect children and their families from the ravages of the pandemic as well as from the dramatic upheaval it precipitated. This Article will evaluate the state’s pandemic response vis-à-vis children and their families, mining the experience for lessons learned and possible ways forward. Specifically, this project will argue that the state’s pandemic response represented a departure from the state’s conventional approach to parens patriae. Conventional practice prior to the pandemic was characterized by a state model …
Development Of A Pseudotype-Based Neutralization Test For Sars-Cov-2 Antibody Measurement, Kunlanan Charsangbong
Development Of A Pseudotype-Based Neutralization Test For Sars-Cov-2 Antibody Measurement, Kunlanan Charsangbong
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The gold standard for measuring anti-SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing antibody is a live-virus neutralization test (VNT). However, VNT is rather complex and must be performed in a biosafety level 3 facility. Therefore, a gene-encoding spike protein of the original SARS-CoV-2 variant was designed to develop a lentivirus-based SARS-CoV-2 pseudotype in this study to replace the live virus, which can be conducted in a biosafety level 2 facility. The 2nd generation lentiviral pseudotype with green fluorescent protein (GFP) and the 3rd generation lentiviral pseudotype with luciferase as a reporter system, respectively, provided a sufficient titer (TCID50/mL) for a neutralization test. However, the 3rd …

This research investigates the relationship between Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance, represented by ESG scores, and Probability of Financial Distress Risk (FDR), as proxied by Ohlson O-Score, for firms operating in the Asia-Pacific region from 2010 to 2022. In addition, the aforementioned relationship during economic crisis and the level of market development is also investigated. The findings reveal a negative association between ESG performance and the probability of FDR in which the increase in ESG performance reduces the likelihood of FDR. Notably, the environmental and social pillars of ESG consistently exhibit negative relationship with FDR, with the social pillar …

The Impact Of Green House Gas Emission On Firm's Performance In Japan, Chanikan Veerachadsakulchai
The Impact Of Green House Gas Emission On Firm's Performance In Japan, Chanikan Veerachadsakulchai
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This study investigates the impact of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on corporate financial performance in Japan, with a particular focus on the role of environmental regulations. We hypothesize that while lower GHG emissions generally enhance financial performance, the benefits diminish beyond a certain point. Additionally, we examine how stringent environmental regulations influence this relationship. We use total GHG emissions and total GHG emissions per company’s enterprise value including cash (EVIC) as the proxies. The results indicate that GHG emissions negatively impact corporate financial performance, as measured by ROA and Tobin's Q. However, the regulatory environment, whether stringent or not, does …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This paper examines the influence of ESG performance on the cost of debt (CoD) in Asia-Pacific firms from 2010 to 2022. It is among the first to explore how ESG performance scores affect the cost of debt against different economic conditions and market maturity levels. The study finds that companies with higher ESG ratings, particularly environmental and social dimensions, correlate with lower borrowing costs. Governance scores also matter, but they don't seem to influence borrowing costs as much. Additionally, the paper reveals that ESG's impact on borrowing costs is stronger in developed countries than in emerging ones. The research also indicates …

Transit-oriented development (TOD) is essential to promote independent travel and encourage mass transit use among students, which has several advantages for their physical well-being and boosts their confidence in society. Despite a decade of mass rail transit development and TOD development in Bangkok City, cars still queue to drop students at schools, even near transit stations. This presents a paradox: Why do students go to school in proximity to the mass transit system but not use the mass transit system? The high reliance on personal cars will inevitably shape children’s transportation habits in adulthood, significantly impacting the city’s air quality …
