Thawing And Storage Effects On Quality Of Plant-Based Sausage Patties, Dakota Cook
Thawing And Storage Effects On Quality Of Plant-Based Sausage Patties, Dakota Cook
All Theses
Maintaining sausage analogue quality during a thawing process and storage is important for increasing consumer satisfaction. Following new trends and prevalence of plant-based meats and a flexitarian diet, two experiments were conducted to test how thawing methods (experiment 1) and storage temperatures (experiment 2) affect meat analogue quality. For Experiment 1, Jimmy Dean Original Sausage Patties Made with Pork & Turkey, Morningstar Veggie Original Patties and Beyond Sausage Original Patties were purchased pre-frozen and subsequently thawed in one of three ways: 1. thawed at 4°C for 24 hours, 2. thawed at room temperature (22°C±2°C) for 4 hours and 3. thawed …

Anxiety Screening At A Psychiatric Inpatient Facility: A Quality Improvement Project, Irene Akwitti
Anxiety Screening At A Psychiatric Inpatient Facility: A Quality Improvement Project, Irene Akwitti
Doctor of Nursing Practice
Background. Generalized anxiety disorder is characterized by persistent anxiety and uncontrollable worry occurring more days than not for a minimum of 6 months (Patriquin & Mathew, 2017). Presently, anxiety screening and evidence-based practice treatment for adults are suboptimal. It is impossible to overemphasize the importance of early diagnosis and prompt treatment of generalized anxiety disorder in patients. Purpose. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to implement the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) screening tool, a validated, evidence-based instrument, in a psychiatric inpatient facility to improve early detection and treatment of anxiety disorders in patients. Methods. Staff members were educated …

Using Plastinated Cadaveric Models For Anatomical Study Of Dorsalis Pedis Artery And Its Variation, Steven Bolton, Ifunanya Monube, Hooman Tabatabai-Mir
School of Podiatric Medicine - Student Research
The dorsalis pedis artery is a main artery of the dorsum of the foot. It directly arises from the anterior tibial artery and travels distally to the base of the 1st metatarsal. Its main function includes supplying oxygenated blood to the dorsal surface of the foot. A weak dorsalis pedis pulse is an indication of underlying circulation issue, such as peripheral vascular disease. Anatomical variations of the artery are not uncommon, including the total absence of the artery. Branching variations occur in approximately 10% of the population. Knowledge of these variations is critical for surgeons to prevent surgical complications

Non-Operative Management Strategy For Blunt Pulmonary Artery Pseudoaneurysm: A Case Report, Declan A. Feery, Kevin Kuruvilla, Allison G. Mcnickle, Douglas R. Fraser
Department of Surgery Faculty Research
Traumatic pulmonary artery pseudoaneurysms (PAP) are rare findings and are often associated with penetrating trauma to the chest. We present a case of a pulmonary artery pseudoaneurysm following blunt trauma. A 49-year-old man presented after a motor vehicle collision. Contrast enhanced computed tomography scans of the neck, chest, abdomen, and pelvis were obtained demonstrating a proximal right pulmonary artery pseudoaneurysm, small volume hemopericardium, left first rib fracture, and focal non-flow limiting dissection of left subclavian artery. For the management of right PAP, we adopted a non-operative management strategy with an esmolol infusion for strict heart rate and blood pressure control. …

Zoning And Land Use Law, Newton M. Galloway, Steven J. Jones, Joshua Williams
Mercer Law Review
Each annual survey of Georgia zoning and land use law since 2017 has chronicled judicial decisions ostensibly intended to transform legislative zoning decisions into quasi-judicial actions. These include City of Cumming v. Flowers, in which the Supreme Court of Georgia held a local government variance decision, and any other zoning or entitlement decision tightly controlled by the local ordinance, is quasi-judicial and may only be appealed by writ of certiorari, regardless of the mechanism for appeal set out in the local government’s ordinance; York v. Athens College of Ministry, Inc., in which the Court of Appeals of Georgia …

A Run For Your Money: The Supreme Court Of Georgia In Taylor V. Devereux Foundation, Inc. Upholds The Constitutionality Of The Statutory Cap On Punitive Damages, Rachel N. Ratajczak
Mercer Law Review
The sky is the limit! This idiom rings true, except for plaintiffs in many states who dream of million-dollar punitive damage awards. Many states have statutorily capped punitive damage awards, despite their role as “quasi-criminal . . . private fines” to punish defendants for their wrong-doing, and to deter future similar conduct by others. Challenges to statutory caps have plagued both federal and state courts for decades.
In 2023, the Supreme Court of Georgia in Taylor v. Devereux Foundation, Inc. addressed whether O.C.G.A. § 51-12-5.1(g), Georgia’s statutory cap on punitive damages, violates the right to trial by jury, separation …

Mercer Law Review
The Supreme Court of Georgia’s ruling in Sons of Confederate Veterans v. Henry County Board of Commissioners marks a transformative moment in the evolution of Georgia’s standing doctrine. The case delves into the dimensions of standing in Georgia courts, specifically addressing whether community stakeholders, such as citizens, residents, taxpayers, and voters, must prove an individualized injury to establish standing when raising a general grievance against their local government.

P-Ring: The Conserved Nature Of Phosphorus Enriched Cells In Seedling Roots Of Distantly Related Species, Aniruddha Acharya, Thomas C. Pesacreta
Faculty Publications - Biological Sciences
Plants require sunlight, carbon dioxide, water and mineral ions for their growth and development. Roots in vascular plants sequester water and ions from soil and transport them to the aboveground parts of the plant. Due to heterogeneous nature of soil, roots have evolved several regulatory barriers from molecular to organismic level that selectively allows certain ions to enter the vascular tissues for transport according to the physiological and metabolic demands of plant cell. Current literature profusely elaborates about apoplastic barriers, but the possibility of the existence of a symplastic regulation through phosphorous-enriched cells has not been mentioned. Recent investigations on …

Human Nutrition and Hospitality Management Undergraduate Honors Theses
The mission behind creating the College Girl’s Guide to Fayetteville, AR was to ease the adjustment from high school to college for females attending the University of Arkansas. This is one of life’s most monumental transitions, often resulting in anxiety, depression, and loneliness, specifically among the female demographic. With that in mind, the intent of the guidebook was to develop culture, confidence, and community on campus. In the aftermath of Covid-19, loneliness on college campuses has become an epidemic in need of a university-wide solution to increase student satisfaction and retention. A research aspect that heavily impacted the project was …

A Gold-Based Inhibitor Of Oxidative Phosphorylation Is Effective Against Triple Negative Breast Cancer, R. Tyler Mertens, Jong Hyun Kim, Samuel Ofori, Chibuzor Ngozi Olelewe, Paul J. Kamitsuka, Gunnar F. Kwakye, Samuel G. Awuah
Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications
Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is associated with metabolic heterogeneity and poor prognosis with limited treatment options. New treatment paradigms for TNBC remains an unmet need. Thus, therapeutics that target metabolism are particularly attractive approaches. We previously designed organometallic Au(III) compounds capable of modulating mitochondrial respiration by ligand tuning with high anticancer potency in vitro and in vivo. Here, we show that an efficacious Au(III) dithiocarbamate (AuDTC) compound induce mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative damage in cancer cells. Efficacy of AuDTC in TNBC mouse models harboring mito- chondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) dependence and metabolic heterogeneity establishes its thera- peutic potential following systemic …

Cell Aggregation Activates Small Gtpase Rac1 And Induces Cd44 Cleavage By Maintaining Lipid Raft Integrity, Dong Li, Younhee Park, Hami Hemati, Xia Liu
Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications
Lipid rafts are highly ordered membrane domains that are enriched in cholesterol and glycosphingolipids and serve as major platforms for signal transduction. Cell detachment from the extracellular matrix (ECM) triggers lipid raft disruption and anoikis, which is a barrier for cancer cells to metastasize. Compared to single circulating tumor cells (CTCs), our recent studies have demonstrated that CD44-mediatd cell aggregation enhances the stemness, survival and metastatic ability of aggregated cells. Here, we investigated whether and how lipid rafts are involved in CD44-mediated cell aggregation. We found that cell detachment, which mimics the condition when tumor cells detach from the ECM …
Can Affective Symptomology Predict Somatic Complaints In Symptom Checklists?, Catherine E. Scales
Can Affective Symptomology Predict Somatic Complaints In Symptom Checklists?, Catherine E. Scales
Psychological Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
Introduction: Persistent and medically unexplained somatic symptoms are widespread and pose significant burden to the healthcare system as patients often overuse consultation services when seeking a diagnosis for their symptoms. In turn, this can lead to misdiagnosis and unnecessary treatment. Since somatic symptoms are commonly associated with affective disorders but are not always associated with any specific medical diagnoses, identifying accessible methods of better guiding diagnostic tendencies for clinicians should be a priority.
Methods: Participants (N = 114, Mean age = 18.9) were undergraduate students recruited from the University of Arkansas with no prescreening requirements. Linear regression analyses were utilized …

Government corruption is a problem found in varying degrees in almost every country around the world. Corruption can be defined as the misuse of public office for private gain. Some examples of government corruption are bribery, theft and tax evasion which all can be found in developing countries costing them trillions of dollars every year. The goal of the current study is to explore the relationship between government corruption and the role of internet freedom, using Turkey as a case study. Internet freedom is a broad term that includes having Internet access, digital rights, net neutrality, and freedom of information. …
High Throughput Phenotyping: Field Based Triticale Breeding And Educational Resource Impact, Catherine Kay Mick
High Throughput Phenotyping: Field Based Triticale Breeding And Educational Resource Impact, Catherine Kay Mick
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Triticale (Triticosecale) is a multifunctional hybrid cereal crop that adopted the hardiness of rye and wheat's high-yielding and nutritional qualities. Plant breeding programs work to improve the quality and number of varieties available to producers through multiple rounds of evaluation and selection. However, traditional phenotyping methods are labor-intensive, time-consuming, and destructive, creating a phenotyping bottleneck. Remote sensing using unmanned aerial systems has the potential to alleviate this issue and change the evaluation of phenotypes in a breeding. Demand for educational resources to advance public awareness and prepare the workforce has increased with the utilization of more technology in …
Vulnerabilities Of Greater Prairie Chicken And Tier 1 At-Risk Species In Nebraska Caused By Grassland Transition To Woody Dominance, Robert Peterson
Vulnerabilities Of Greater Prairie Chicken And Tier 1 At-Risk Species In Nebraska Caused By Grassland Transition To Woody Dominance, Robert Peterson
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Woody plant encroachment is a global threat and has been transitioning grasslands to woody dominance at a biome scale. This threat is present in the Great Plains grassland biome which is currently experiencing grassland biome collapse as the alternative woody biome advances northwest. Nebraska, which contains the most intact temperate grassland in the world, is currently at the front lines of this large-scale transition making this state’s management decisions vital for the remaining grasslands and the species which rely on these ecosystems. In this study, we assess the vulnerability of Greater Prairie Chicken and Tier 1 at-risk species in Nebraska …
Decarcerating Immigrant Detainee Medical Care: A Path To Doctrinal Redemption, Kieran Dosanjh
Decarcerating Immigrant Detainee Medical Care: A Path To Doctrinal Redemption, Kieran Dosanjh
University of Chicago Law Review
Government detention is a quid pro quo: the government may deprive persons of their physical liberty, but in exchange, it owes them a level of care. The critical question is, how much care does the Constitution require the government to provide? In a series of federal judicial decisions (collectively, the detainee medical care doctrine), courts have found that the Constitution requires different standards of care for different classes of government detainees. These courts’ standard of care for immigrant detainees is erroneous. Modern U.S. immigration detention’s descriptive resemblance to criminal confinement has prompted courts to (wrongly) find that immigrant detainees are …
The Impact Of Mentoring Practices On New Faculty And Staff, Paige Lloyd
The Impact Of Mentoring Practices On New Faculty And Staff, Paige Lloyd
Education Theses and Dissertations
Annually, schools nationwide welcome new educators to their facilities that bring with them a vast array of experiences. Onboarding tools such as mentoring or induction programs are often a customary practice, utilized to provide new educators with skills to assist them in the classroom as well as acclimate them to their new organization. Mentoring is often synonymous with induction programs and associated with the pairing of an experienced educator with a novice to the field or location that can offer support from instructional and classroom strategies to campus policies. With recent shifts in education and an ever-present national teacher crisis …

The Uteach Program: Minimizing The Disconnect Between Teacher Preparation Programs And Teaching Actualized, Chanel Howard Veazy
Education Theses and Dissertations
New teachers entering classrooms from teacher preparation programs are inadequately prepared to handle the demands of educating today's youth, as the country confronts teacher shortages in historic numbers, particularly in the fields of science and mathematics. The research underscores the pressing need for adequately prepared teachers in today's classrooms, particularly in addressing teacher shortages, which have been historically significant, especially in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields such as science and mathematics. To address these issues, the University of Texas at Austin introduced the UTeach program in 1997 with the aim of improving the quantity and quality of secondary …
Empirical Evidence Supporting The Inclusion Of Multi-Axes Segregation In Assessing Us County Health, David W. S. Wong, Debasree Das Gupta
Empirical Evidence Supporting The Inclusion Of Multi-Axes Segregation In Assessing Us County Health, David W. S. Wong, Debasree Das Gupta
Kinesiology and Health Science Faculty Publications
To facilitate community action toward health equity, the County Health Rankings & Roadmaps program (CHR&R) assigns health rankings to US counties. The CHR&R conceptual model considers White-Black and White-non-White dissimilarity values to represent residential segregation as part of the family and social support subcomponent. As the US is greying and becoming more multi-racial-ethnic, the two-group White-centered segregation measures are inadequate to capture segregation among population subgroups in the US. Thus, we evaluate the relevancy of segregation measures that consider multiple racial, ethnic, and age groups in assessing US county health. Besides using the two-group dissimilarity index to measure Whitecentered racial …
