Championing Awareness Of The Opioid Epidemic Through A Service-Learning Module For Non-Stem Biology Majors, Ryleigh Fleming, Sarah J. Adkins, Marco Esteban, Cinnamin Cross, Amy Hutson Chatham, Samiksha A. Raut
Championing Awareness Of The Opioid Epidemic Through A Service-Learning Module For Non-Stem Biology Majors, Ryleigh Fleming, Sarah J. Adkins, Marco Esteban, Cinnamin Cross, Amy Hutson Chatham, Samiksha A. Raut
APC Fund
Over 50,000 people die annually from opioid overdoses in the United States leading to what has become known as the “opioid epidemic.” This is of heightened concern in states like Alabama that experience higher rates of overall drug use and overdose deaths. Thus, it is increasingly important for college students in Alabama to learn about how the opioid epidemic is affecting their communities. Previous studies have demonstrated that engaging non-majors in innovative active-learning oriented pedagogies like service-learning can enhance their understanding and awareness about contemporary societal issues. Despite its pedagogical potential, the impact of opioid-related service-learning, particularly for non-majors, continues …
Looking Backward To Move Forward: Ending The "History And Tradition" Of Gun Violence Against The Lgbtq+ Community, Brett V. Ries
Looking Backward To Move Forward: Ending The "History And Tradition" Of Gun Violence Against The Lgbtq+ Community, Brett V. Ries
Duke Law Journal Online
Anti-LGBTQ+ gun violence is occurring in the United States at an alarming rate. The Department of Homeland Security has even issued a domestic terrorism warning for attacks against the LGBTQ+ community. When the shootings at the Pulse Nightclub in Florida and Club Q in Colorado are combined, fifty-four individuals were murdered and seventy-eight more were wounded while simply existing in an LGBTQ+ space. Both of these targeted shootings occurred within the past six years, indicating that anti-LGBTQ+ gun violence is not a relic of the past. As they were ten years ago, LGBTQ+ individuals are still disproportionately impacted by hate …

Retailers – especially this time of year – excel at causing problems.
“By this,” said Dr. Kelly Price-Rhea, “I mean they present the consumer with a problem the consumer didn’t know they had.”
Price-Rhea, an associate professor and director of the online Digital Marketing Program at East Tennessee State University, has spent her professional career researching consumer behavior, the ethics of digital marketing and more.
And with the shopping season upon us, it is useful to understand why so many of the holiday sales you encounter are so difficult to resist.

Applying The Fast Fit Test Method For Quantitative Cnc To The Qualitative Fit Test Method Utilizing And Approved Reference Method And A Modified Reference Method, Mckenna Kaelber
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
N95 respirators are the most utilized respirator in the healthcare sector, and when properly fitted, protect workers from biological and chemical exposures. A respirator fit test is a protocol used to assess the seal between the user’s face and the respirator. Quantitative and Qualitative methods are both approved and used for respirator fit testing. Quantitative Condensation Nuclei Counting (CNC) uses instrumentation to measure the particles on the inside and outside of the respirator and calculates a fit factor, indicating how well the respirator fits. Qualitative fit testing (QLFT) relies on the individual’s ability to detect a challenge agent while wearing …

Inscribing Violence: Quantifying The Impact Of World Heritage Site Inscription On Direct And Structural Violence., Anne Chance
Doctor of International Conflict Management Dissertations
The World Heritage Program and nomination process have undergone considerable criticism regarding their impact on host nations. These critics have often described violence as an unintended side-effect of heritage sites, but this research has lacked a systematic analysis of types of violence associated with the inscription of sites. The background to this study explores the application of Galtung’s Triangle of Violence, which considers the symbiotic dynamics of cultural violence, structural violence, and direct violence. In so doing, I constructed the Measures of Structural Violence matrix by which to examine direct and structural violence in states that host heritage sites.

Sle1 (Aaa) And Alpha Hemolysin (Hla) Staphylococcus Aureus Antigens As A Potential Vaccine For Cows, Roz Al Janabi, Madeline Clark, Juliette Tinker
VIP 2023
Knowledge of Staphylococcus aureus is essential to understanding how this pathogen causes different types of infections in humans. It can cause skin superficial infections and gastroenteritis. It can also cause infections in the joints and wounds, therefore causing humans to be severely ill by causing sepsis or infection in the blood. It is also very commonly antibiotic-resistant. In the lab, we are working with this priority pathogen because of antibiotic resistance. Cows can get S. aureus from humans, and it causes mastitis. This affects the dairy industry which is very important in the United States, but also specifically important in …
The Unexpected Significance Of Myosin A In Organization Of M-Line Protein Unc-89/Obscurin Within Striated Muscle Cells Of Caenorhabditis Elegans, Kar Men Lee
Honors Theses
This research investigates the unexpected significance of Myosin A in the organization of M-line protein UNC-89/obscurin within striated muscle cells of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans). The study employs immunofluorescence techniques to examine the spatial and temporal dynamics of UNC-89/obscurin and Myosin A during embryonic development. The sarcomere, a fundamental unit in muscle cells, is governed by the 'sliding filament model,' where the M-line serves as a crucial anchor for Myosin A. This research seeks to understand the relationship between muscle function in humans and C. elegans, utilizing the latter's simple anatomy and genetic tractability. The …

Moral Injury, Identity Dissonance, And Reintegration: A Compendium Of Reintegration And Survey Of United States Military Veterans, Thomas Hodges
Moral Injury, Identity Dissonance, And Reintegration: A Compendium Of Reintegration And Survey Of United States Military Veterans, Thomas Hodges
Doctor of International Conflict Management Dissertations
How do military moral injuries affect reintegration? All service members leave the military eventually, but reintegration can be challenging, bringing changes in career, family life, and friendships, potentially prompting a loss of purpose, drive, and connection. Service members may also struggle with a crisis of identity upon separating from the military, feeling their military identity is incompatible with civilian life. While these difficulties are common for service members in reintegration, they may be worsened by moral injury, the adverse biological, social, psychological, and spiritual effects of experiencing an event that deeply offends a person’s sense of right and wrong. People …

This study examines the relationships between e-government service quality, perceived value, satisfaction, and loyalty toward e-government services. Survey data were collected from 340 randomly selected e-government service users in Vietnam. The results reveal that (1) e-government service quality consists of five dimensions: ease of interaction, fulfillment, citizen care, security and privacy, and trustworthiness; (2) among the five dimensions of e-government service quality, only trustworthiness and fulfillment are significantly related to perceived value; however, trustworthiness has a stronger association with perceived value than does fulfillment; and (3) both perceived value and satisfaction are positively associated with loyalty. The results indicate that …

Aequitas: Seeking Equilibrium In Title Ix, Raymond Trent Cromartie
Aequitas: Seeking Equilibrium In Title Ix, Raymond Trent Cromartie
University of Dayton Law Review
In 2011, the Obama Administration introduced the Dear Colleague Letter (“DCL” or “Letter”), which drastically reshaped the nature and scope of Title IX and redefined how sex-based discrimination is viewed and addressed on college campuses around the country. While the overall intent of the Letter was to address historical mishandlings of sexual misconduct on the part of victims, including sexual assault in higher education, many commentators have expressed the concern that the guidelines aggressively pursued this end without considering several sweeping impacts. Where Title IX used to be a means for providing equal access to education through government oversight, through …
How Can They Be Silenced? Why Ohio Must Amend Its Civil Statute Of Limitations For Child Sexual Abuse Claims, Mackenzie F. Reiber
How Can They Be Silenced? Why Ohio Must Amend Its Civil Statute Of Limitations For Child Sexual Abuse Claims, Mackenzie F. Reiber
University of Dayton Law Review
Ohio should abolish the civil statute of limitations for child sexual abuse (CSA) claims because survivors of CSA generally recover memories and come forward with allegations well past the limitations period; courts in states that have eliminated the civil statute of limitations for CSA claims do not become overwhelmed by hearing these claims several years past the date of the abuse; and the perpetrator’s constitutional rights are not violated by abolishing the statute of limitations.

ETSU News
ETSU is committed to providing students with hands-on learning opportunities to make a real-world impact.
Earlier this week, East Tennessee State University achieved a significant milestone. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) voted to reaffirm our university’s accreditation with no findings or recommendations. This action signifies that one of the most stringent accrediting bodies in the nation not only gave ETSU its continued endorsement but did so without listing a single concern or recommendation for improvement. In short, it was a glowing review.
ETSU must undergo the reaffirmation process every ten years to ensure that …
