Investigating The Effects Of Message Framing On College Students' Risk Perceptions And Protective Responses To Adenovirus, Shawna Dias, Romy Rw

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

The purpose of this study is to investigate how message framing influences people’s risk perceptions, protective action decision making, and behavioral response. We make a case for both revising and extending the use of the protective action decision model (PADM) and message framing theory to examine the message characteristics of the adenovirus warnings during this crisis event, as well as participants’ impressions and behavioral responses to health risk communication messages. The data were collected from three focus group sessions, held at the University of Maryland. We found evidence to suggest that fear appeals and efficacy focused messaging may increase the …

Reinventing Black Womanhood: Alternative Media And Identity Discourse In The 2019 Chicago Mayoral Race, Ololade Afolabi Dec 2023

Reinventing Black Womanhood: Alternative Media And Identity Discourse In The 2019 Chicago Mayoral Race, Ololade Afolabi

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

This paper examines how a Chicago-based alternative medium covered the 2019 Chicago’s mayoral race. The study uses critical discourse analysis and the theory of Black feminism to argue for the need to examine the multiple identities of Black women and how such identities determine their representation in socio-cultural and political spaces. The findings from this study show that agency is a major part of media coverage and that the identities of Black women are better represented when the women are portrayed as agents in their own stories. These findings provide an alternative narrative to the discourse of Black womanhood which …

Listen When She Speaks: Young Women On Arriving At Reproductive Rights Opinions, Sydney Elaine Brammer Dec 2023

Listen When She Speaks: Young Women On Arriving At Reproductive Rights Opinions, Sydney Elaine Brammer

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

While a significant amount of time has been devoted to researching and analyzing existing opinions about reproductive rights, few have aimed to identify how young women, between the ages of 18 and 35, have arrived at those opinions. This project includes a literature review, an analysis of a series of interviews with young women, and an in-depth discussion about the importance of understanding their experiences. Above all else, it suggests that there are several common points of interest and demands for change from women all across the spectrum on reproductive rights issues, and critical similarities in the ways that they …

My Anger Is Still A Small Boy: (Dis)Embodied Anger As Survival, Damon Darling

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

The stories found within these pages disclose graphic and intimate details regarding numerous accounts of physical, sexual, and drug-based assaults. These stories are raw, they are bloody, and they are mine. There are parts of me that I wish I could continue to remain silent about. However, I hold on to hope that these pages may offer some form of healing for myself and for (potentially) you. Given the nature of these pages, reader, I implore you to approach the essay carefully and cautiously. In this paper, I performatively engage with an internal family system of various personae that have …

The autoethnography spans a college semester of activism, involving a march, weekly protests, and a storytelling event centered on police brutality. Communication scholarship undergirds this narrative that reveals entering activism is a rewarding journey to justice, and also to self-discovery.

"Is This Place Inside Or Outside?": Issues Of Space In Kentucky Route Zero, Jesse Snider Dec 2023

"Is This Place Inside Or Outside?": Issues Of Space In Kentucky Route Zero, Jesse Snider

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

Using the video game Kentucky Route Zero as an artifact and the theories of Space and Place of De Certeau, I examine “confused spaces:” places that present simultaneously as two or more contradictory spaces. Through the inevitable confusion between my performance/agency as the game’s player and the performance/agency of the characters within the game, I re-examine De Certeau’s idea of the pedestrian through the lens of twice-behaved behaviors, bureaucracy, remembered religion, inside, outside, and the agency to exert perceived change in one’s environment. Finally, I bring what I learned through Kentucky Route Zero into the realm of the physical, as …

In Part I, this Comment discusses the political landscape in the area of climate action. Part III discusses the Quartet and its role in MQD as a determinative legal canon. Recent scholarship calls into question if there are multiple iterations of MQD, and whether the most …

Unclear Guidelines From The Sentencing Commission And A Prejudiced Warden Result In (Un)Compassionate Release, Mary Trotter Dec 2023

Unclear Guidelines From The Sentencing Commission And A Prejudiced Warden Result In (Un)Compassionate Release, Mary Trotter

Journal of the National Association of Administrative Law Judiciary

Congress first developed compassionate release in 1984, granting federal courts the authority to reduce sentences for “extraordinary and compelling” reasons. Compassionate release allows the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) and inmates to apply for immediate early release on grounds of “particularly extraordinary or compelling circumstances which could not reasonably have been foreseen by the court at the time of sentencing.” Questions remain about how the BOP and the courts grant compassionate release and whether the courts apply the compassionate release guidelines consistently. The uncertainty is due to the lack of clarity from the USSC to define “extraordinary or compelling circumstances,” …

Practical solutions for soil conservation are needed to ensure sustainable food production. Conservation agriculture and the use of cover crops are promising strategies for soil improvement in agricultural systems. These strategies are being promoted in Cambodia to address rapidly declining soil fertility; however, there is a lack of insight into the perceptions of Cambodian smallholders towards cover cropping within a conservation agriculture approach. A greater understanding of the utilization and perceptions of cover crops is needed to increase adoption and prevent further soil degradation. This study utilized a mixed methods approach with quantitative data from a farmer survey and qualitative …

Aequitas: Seeking Equilibrium In Title Ix, Raymond Trent Cromartie

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

Over the past two decades, the scope of Title IX has expanded drastically and now includes the investigation and adjudication of sexual misconduct cases through campus tribunals. Beginning in 2011, the Obama Administration, through a “Dear Colleague Letter” and subsequent guidance, initiated this process by establishing guidelines that required schools to develop and implement policies and procedures for the handling of sexual misconduct cases. Following the publication of the Obama-era guidance, schools scrambled to ensure compliance with the federal guidance, which led to a myriad of applications by universities. Unfortunately, the fallout from the 2011 guidance was widespread litigation initiated …

Key Points In Preparation For Oregon Legislative Session (2024): Examining The Multifaceted Impacts Of Drug Decriminalization On Public Safety, Law Enforcement, And Prosecutorial Discretion, Kelsey S. Henderson, Christopher Campbell, Brian Renauer

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications and Presentations

These findings are part of a 3-year study to examine the impacts of possession of PCS law changes on: (1) law enforcement discretion, (2) prosecutorial decision-making, (3) courts/sentencing, and (4) public safety. The key findings, unless noted, represent statewide trends and impacts. Prior to M110, other statewide changes in policy, law, and historical events such as the COVID-19 lockdown/court backlog and public defense crisis also had important impacts on enforcement, prosecution/sentencing, and public safety outcomes. As such, data collected during the early implementation of M110 is not likely a reliable predictor of its ultimate impact. The data reported on below …
