Negative Pressure Wound Therapy For Complex Oral Wounds, Mykaihla Sternick, James Gates, Allen Champion, Andrew Yampolsky
Negative Pressure Wound Therapy For Complex Oral Wounds, Mykaihla Sternick, James Gates, Allen Champion, Andrew Yampolsky
Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Faculty Papers
Negative pressure wound therapy provides a nonsurgical treatment option for many types of complex wounds. This therapy utilizes the vacuum-assisted closure device, which decreases air pressure, removes fluid that accumulates within the wound, and aids to facilitate changes that promote healing. Despite the increased use of negative pressure wound therapy in the head and neck region, there is substantially less data available on the management of transoral vacuum-assisted wound closure. Herein, we present a case of a novel approach for the creation and use of a transoral wound vac for a patient with a refractory orocutaneous wound in the setting …

Leadership Style And Nursing Retention, Brenae J. Reason
MSN Capstone Projects
Nursing is the heart of healthcare, for decades we have been the drivers of innovation and have contributed to so many advancements in the profession. Even with nursing being a sincere passion amongst many nurses, there is an alarming trend of nurses who are faced with burnout (Brusie, C., n.d.). It has been reported that 1 in 5 nurses left their position in one particular health system (Andreyeva et al., 2023). It is also noted that turnover can be costly for organizations (Zuniga et al., 2019). While there are a multitude of reasons nurses could be leaving their companies, one …

Introduction: It is becoming clearer that the microbiota helps drive responses to vaccines; however, little is known about the underlying mechanism. In this study, we aimed to identify microbial features that are associated with vaccine immunogenicity in infant rhesus macaques. Methods: We analyzed 16S rRNA gene sequencing data of 215 fecal samples collected at multiple timepoints from 64 nursery-reared infant macaques that received various HIV vaccine regimens. PERMANOVA tests were performed to determine factors affecting composition of the gut microbiota throughout the first eight months of life in these monkeys. We used DESeq2 to identify differentially abundant bacterial taxa, PICRUSt2 …

Flu Vaccine Hesitancy And Accessibility On The Onu Campus, Adia Welch
Honors Capstone Enhancement Presentations
I collected data from students and faculty at Ohio Northern about their ability to receive their flu vaccine on campus. Along with that, collecting opinions on why people did not receive their vaccine and addressing those issues. My goal is to use this information to help improve the vaccine clinics on campus so that more students and faculty can receive their vaccine. This includes making the clinics more accessible or at a more convenient time. This could also include raffles for clinics to improve attendance and the overall vaccination status of the university

Women And Gender In Mountaineering And Climbing, Natalie Gunn
Women And Gender In Mountaineering And Climbing, Natalie Gunn
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis examines how gender and ideas about gender affected early female mountaineers and rock climbers. The study focuses on female dress standards in the Victorian era, the relative equity of accomplishment between male and female mountaineers and climbers, the portrayal of female climbers in the media, and the misrepresentation of female motivations for climbing. By analyzing primary sources from female climbers and mountaineers, this paper uncovers how women challenged traditional gender roles and navigated the complexities of the male-dominated climbing community.

Currently, the ethnic and racial demographics of occupational therapy students do not reflect the US’ diverse populations due to a general lack of awareness about occupational therapy (OT) amongst diverse high school students (HSS). Many factors serve as common barriers amongst diverse, minority communities, limiting students’ exposure to and knowledge about health professions, such as OT. To address these barriers, Health Club is a six-week, high school afterschool program designed to raise awareness about healthcare professions where ethnically and racially diverse populations are commonly underrepresented. Health Club uses lessons consisting of fundamental healthcare knowledge to provide HSS with opportunities to …

Department of Orthopaedics Faculty Research
Introduction: Parosteal osteosarcomas are low-grade bony malignancies that are treated primarily with surgical resection and reconstruction. This report discusses a unique case of a pediatric patient who presented with a parosteal osteosarcoma of the distal radius causing extensive erosive mass effect and growth disturbance of the adjacent ulna. Likely due to their slow-growing nonaggressive nature, parosteal osteosarcomas have not been previously described to abut adjacent bony structures through direct contact. The patient presented in a significantly delayed manner due to social circumstances, inadvertently revealing this novel behavior. This report reviews this rare case and describes the current understanding of this …

Increasing Efficiency Through Accounting: Examining Factors Influencing Uses Of The Internal Service Fund Among County Governments, Steve Modlin
The North American Accounting Studies
ABSTRACT. Previous studies involving internal service fund (ISF) use over the past thirty years point to a decline due to limited usefulness and the ability for local governments to reallocate costs to various departments. In order to determine if this trend is continuing, a thorough analysis was conducted of North Carolina County Comprehensive Annual Financial Reports (CAFRs). Initial findings indicate that there has been a slight increase in ISF use with the province still among larger governments, but the number of services utilized through an ISF continues to decline. Additional survey data suggest less experienced finance officers, a lower number …
The Introduction Of A Low-Fidelity Simulation With An Electronic Health Record To Increase Clinical Judgment In Pre-Licensure Bachelor Of Science In Nursing Students, Tammy Rogers
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) lists clinical judgment (CJ) as a critical skill for nurses to promote patient safety (Barner et al., 2023). The purpose of this quality improvement project was to increase CJ through low-fidelity simulation and an authentic electronic health record (EHR) with the aim of improving patient safety. The clinical partners of the school of nursing provided the EHR making it an innovative, cost-effective approach to guide students in interpreting evidence to make safe clinical decisions (Barner et al., 2023). Forty-five Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students participated in the project, which …

An Inexpensive, 3d Printable, Arduino And Bluray-Based, Confocal Laser And Fluorescent Scanning Thermal Microscope, Justin Loose
Theses and Dissertations
The Fluorescence Scanning Thermal Microscope (FSTM v3.0), was designed to create an inexpensive, and easily manufactured, device for measuring the diffusivity of samples with microscopic locational precision. This was accomplished by using a Blu-ray device known as a PHR-803T, referred to in this work as a PHR. The optics in the PHR are nearly identical in function to conventional devices used in thermoreflectance microscopy, making the PHR extremely useful to integrate into the FSTM design. The focus of this thesis is the application of the FSTM as a confocal microscope using 3D printed components and various low-cost devices to operate …

Introduction
Less than one percent of individuals with a spinal cord injury (SCI) experience complete functional recovery by hospital discharge. In the majority of subjects with SCI or any significant neurological injury, functional impairments remain exceptionally devastating and are the leading causes of disability in the United States. Most subjects have impairments that span from paralysis, sensory and motor dysfunction. In the majority of cases, physical rehabilitation remains the hallmark intervention for the regain of function and improvement in the performance of activities of daily living (ADLs). However, rehabilitation can be limiting in that this method takes a considerable amount …
A Critical Librarianship Approach For Teaching Patent Searching: Who Becomes An Inventor In America?, Dave Zwicky, Ilana Stonebraker
A Critical Librarianship Approach For Teaching Patent Searching: Who Becomes An Inventor In America?, Dave Zwicky, Ilana Stonebraker
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
The ways in which a technology is invented, owned, and approved are strongly influenced by the same oppressive and exclusionary structures that critical librarianship interrogates. Patents, limited-term grants of rights to inventions, are issued to inventors in exchange for detailed specifications of the invention. This paper examines current practices used by business librarians in teaching students how to find patents and how these practices could be critically informed given the nature of the United States patent system as it exists today. An output of this work is a suggested lesson plan with recommended resources.

Tunnels As Temples Of 'New Green India': Dominant Narratives Of Himalayan Dam Building, Manshi Asher, Vivek Negi
Tunnels As Temples Of 'New Green India': Dominant Narratives Of Himalayan Dam Building, Manshi Asher, Vivek Negi
National Law School Journal
The dramatic unfolding of the Joshimath crisis in Uttarakhand, India, has brought the world’s attention once again to the Himalaya. The contribution of a 520-megawatt hydropower dam to land subsidence is squarely in the spotlight. River valleys with bumper-to-bumper hydropower dam building, especially in the North Western Himalaya, in the past decade and a half or so, have witnessed frequent slope de-stabilisation, landslides and seepages. Unlike the visible dispossession of rural—often adivasi and dalit— populations in reservoir based dam affected areas, even establishing and ‘scientifically’ correlating cascading hazards with human impacts of the ‘invisible’ activity of run-of-the-river dams in the …

The American University: Attitudes About Safety And The Impact Of Gun Regulations On Campus, April Bixler
Online Theses and Dissertations
An ultimate goal of American universities is to provide a safe and secure environment for all who attend and operate there, but what safety looks and feels like to the individual can vary to a great degree. There are many factors that campus safety departments consider when designing their campus safety policies and regulations. One way universities in the U.S. have chosen to regulate campus safety is by allowing concealed carry (CC) on their campuses. No evidence was found in the state of Kentucky that explains if a CC policy is warranted or being pursued by faculty, staff and students …

We Are The Reason We Stand Still In The Face Of Climate Change., Sydney Hemp
Honors Theses
Many different factors can impact the way any information is received but it is especially important to see how scientific information is received because it is often backed up by a great deal of evidence, especially in the case of global climate change. Many of these factors have nothing to do with science and everything to do with social influences, political parties, and other demographic measures. Discussion of these relationships is important when discussing communication in a broad sense, but it can be even more important when bringing up things like global climate change, which has become a political topic …

Student Theses
Drug addiction is a major endemic crisis in the United States with a higher prevalence than any other country. Marijuana and hallucinogens make up a great percentage of the drugs of abuse in Americans ranging from 15 to 64 years old. Marijuana contains over 500 active compounds that contribute to its effects, the major components being delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ-9-THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). Understanding the pharmacological mechanism as well as the effects that they elicit through the dopaminergic reward system is a key factor in being able to understand why addiction is so prevalent in our society. This research was aimed to …
Another Obstacle For Survivors Of Sexual Violence: The Effect Of Limiting Emotional Distress Damages In Title Ix Cases, Allison Mauk
Another Obstacle For Survivors Of Sexual Violence: The Effect Of Limiting Emotional Distress Damages In Title Ix Cases, Allison Mauk
University of Dayton Law Review
In April 2022, the Supreme Court of the United States decided in Cummings v. Premier Rehab Keller, P.L.L.C. that emotional distress damages were not recoverable in private rights of action brought under anti-discrimination statutes. Pursuant to their authority under the Spending Clause, Congress has enacted four distinct anti-discrimination statutes including Title VII, the Rehabilitation Act, the Affordable Care Act, and Title IX. In Cummings, a deaf and blind plaintiff sought emotional distress damages under the Rehabilitation Act and Affordable Care Act after she was denied an interpreter at a physical therapy appointment. The Court developed a test to determine whether …
Using Quantitative And Kinetic Proteomics To Explore Proteostasis, Nathan Raul Zuniga Pina
Using Quantitative And Kinetic Proteomics To Explore Proteostasis, Nathan Raul Zuniga Pina
Theses and Dissertations
Every cell consists of carefully orchestrated biomolecules such as lipids, carbohydrates, and proteins. To maintain internal stability (homeostasis), cells maintain the right amount of these molecules at the right time and at the right place. This process is especially true for proteins since they are the foundation functional units within the cell. Proteins form structures and perform chemistry that bestows cells overarching functional roles. Cells maintain protein homeostasis (proteostasis) by modulating synthesis, folding, and degradation processes (turnover) to maintain the abundance levels for all proteins. This is the foundational kinetic model of proteostasis that is covered in this work, and …

Plant genotype is recognized to contribute to variations in microbial community structure in the rhizosphere, soil adherent to roots. However, the extent to which the viral community varies has remained poorly understood and has the potential to contribute to variation in soil microbial communities. Here we cultivated replicates of two Zea mays genotypes, parviglumis and B73, in a greenhouse and harvested the rhizobiome (rhizoplane and rhizosphere) to identify the abundance of cells and viruses as well as rhizobiome microbial and viral community using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and genome resolved metagenomics. Our results demonstrated that viruses exceeded microbial abundance …

Stronger Regulations On Air Pollution Could Reduce Cardiovascular Disease Mortality Rates, Yue Sun
Center for Policy Research
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in the United States, but there are large disparities in CVD death rates across the country. Air pollution also plays an important role in shaping geographic disparities in CVD mortality, as air pollutants can become absorbed in human circulation systems, and cause inflammation, damage nervous systems, and trigger poor CVD outcomes. This brief reports the results of a study that used data on air pollution and from death certificates to estimate the association between fine particulate matter and cardiovascular disease mortality rates in the U.S. in 2016-2018. Results show that cutting …
