The COVID-19 pandemic brought global disruptions to the way universities operate. Online learning abruptly took priority, as the physical campuses in Australian universities became deserted. Staff had to instantly adapt to major changes in work practices, whilst continuing to support students’ engagement and maintain quality teaching and learning. This article discusses how change fatigue during the pandemic impacted the wellbeing of staff working in the enabling education sector. As staff and student wellbeing is interdependent, gaining a better understanding of the influences on staff wellbeing in the post-pandemic era is worth exploring in the context of discussions around student wellbeing …

Antibody Binding Captures High Energy State Of An Antigen: The Case Of Nsp1 Sars-Cov-2 As Revealed By Hydrogen-Deuterium Exchange Mass Spectrometry, Ravi Kant, Nawneet Mishra, Michael L Gross
2020-Current year OA Pubs
We describe an investigation using structural mass spectrometry (MS) of the impact of two antibodies, 15497 and 15498, binding the highly flexible SARS-CoV-2 Nsp1 protein. We determined the epitopes and paratopes involved in the antibody-protein interactions by using hydrogen-deuterium exchange MS (HDX-MS). Notably, the Fab (Fragment antigen binding) for antibody 15498 captured a high energy form of the antigen exhibiting significant conformational changes that added flexibility over most of the Nsp1 protein. The Fab for antibody 15497, however, showed usual antigen binding behavior, revealing local changes presumably including the binding site. These findings illustrate an unusual antibody effect on an …

Employment, Income, And Poverty In Kalamazoo City Core Neighborhoods, Val Klomparens
Reports
This report employs a traditional methodology using American Community Survey data to examine employment, income, and poverty in three neighborhoods in Kalamazoo, Michigan: Eastside, Northside, and Edison. These neighborhoods are studied with an emphasis on eligibility status for the Distressed Area Recompete Pilot Program, administered through the U.S. Economic Development Administration. Eastside residents are unique in that a larger share earn income through wages or employment than do Michigan residents, yet their median income falls below those at the county and state levels in a statistically significant way. The Edison neighborhood is characterized by greater income inequality than the other …

Protein UFMylation downstream of the E1 enzyme UBA5 plays essential roles in development and endoplasmic reticulum stress. Variants in the UBA5 gene are associated with developmental and epileptic encephalopathy 44 (DEE44), an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by early-onset encephalopathy, movement abnormalities, global developmental delay, intellectual disability, and seizures. DEE44 is caused by at least 12 different missense variants described as loss of function (LoF), but the relationships between genotypes and molecular or clinical phenotypes remain to be established. We developed a humanized UBA5 fly model and biochemical activity assays in order to describe in vivo and in vitro genotype–phenotype relationships …

Managing Soil Ph For Crop Production In Calcareous-Alkaline Soil, Cody Zesiger, Jody Gale, Matt Yost, Grant Cardon
All Current Publications
In semiarid soils of the Western U.S., altering soil pH is not easily accomplished nor straightforward. Utah’s soil pH range can be 1,000 times more acidic or alkaline than neutral (7.0) pH soils. In semiarid regions, typical high-pH soils are also calcareous, meaning there is a large amount of solid calcium carbonate (lime) in the soil. When soil-acidifying amendments are added to these soils, the lime dissolves and counteracts any of the applied soil-acidifying amendments. This fact sheet explains how to identify whether crop symptoms are related to soil pH, how to perform an in-field test for soil pH buffering …

Employment Leave For Early Pregnancy Endings: A Biopolitical Reproductive Governance Analysis In England And Wales, Al Middlemiss, I Boncori, J Brewis, J Davies, Vl Newton
School of Nursing and Midwifery
When a pregnancy ends in England and Wales, statutory time away from paid employment is limited to circumstances where there is a live birth or stillbirth. Forms of leave, such as Maternity Leave or Paternity Leave, depend on parental status derived from the civil registration of a new person or a post-viability stillbirth. Other early pregnancy endings, such as miscarriage or abortion, do not provide specific time off work after pregnancy. This paper uses the concept of reproductive governance to analyze current and shifting biopolitical truth discourses, strategies of intervention, and modes of subjectification around post-pregnancy leaves. It shows how …

Michigan Tech Publications
Mitochondrial dysfunction is associated with various health conditions, including cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. Mitochondrial-targeting therapy aims to restore or enhance mitochondrial function to treat or alleviate these conditions. Exosomes, small vesicles that cells secrete, containing a variety of biomolecules, are critical in cell-to-cell communication and have been studied as potential therapeutic agents. Exosome-based therapy has the potential to treat both cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. Combining these two approaches involves using exosomes as carriers to transport mitochondrial-targeting agents to dysfunctional or damaged mitochondria within target cells. This article presents a new technique for engineering brain-derived exosomes that target mitochondria and has …

Advanced Diffusion Mri Technique And Applications In Placenta And Brain, Zhexian Sun
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Among a series of contrasts of MRI, diffusion MRI (dMRI) is different from conventional MRI by its ability to capture information about the random movement of water molecules and their interaction with local tissue microstructures. This capability holds the potential to reveal intricate subvoxel microstructural information linked to pathological changes, offering potential imaging biomarkers. A higher-order diffusion analysis model helps to yield more accurate and specific parameters but requires more extensive parameter tuning and higher image quality. In this study, we firstly fine-tuned the previously developed diffusion basis spectrum imaging (DBSI) method to strike a balance between efficiency and accuracy …

What The World Has Learned About Their Governments During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Olga Shvetsova
Political Science Faculty Scholarship
As we take stock of all aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic history, one important lesson to be learned concerns government behavior. While defense by immunity was in the works in vaccine research labs, defense by government action took the front seat, and political incumbents in every country and locale became "doctors to the public.” Did some governments perform better than others? Were there any predictable or explainable shortcomings in their crisis responses? Will governments and countries that underperformed in this crisis fall short in other crises where responsible leadership might be required? The contributors to this volume compare and contrast …

Episode 6: For The Kids, Sara Gras
Season 01
When I started thinking about how to address the issue of trans exclusion from youth sports, I knew I needed to include the culture/industry of youth sports as part of the discussion. The pressure to compete and perform at a high level in athletics is reaching kids earlier than ever before, facilitated by parents who see success in sports as the ticket to success in life. This episode explores the relationship between the increased parental investment in kids' athletic achievements and the social acquiescence to the exclusion of trans kids from sports.
