This paper aims to explore the multifaceted elements involved in the design of residential buildings, encompassing both landed and high-rise structures, with a particular focus on memory. The ever-increasing urban population density has prompted a shift towards high-rise living, leading many individuals to transition from traditional landed homes. However, in urban environments where closely-knit communities have been the norm, high-rise living is often perceived as a potential obstacle to fostering social interactions akin to those experienced in landed residential areas. This challenge presents a compelling opportunity for designers to create vertical residential spaces that maintain the vibrant communal ambiance found …

Health Organization1 has upended abortion jurisprudence. The case concerned a Mississippi law barring most abortions when the probable gestational age of the fetus was greater than fifteen weeks.2 Holding that the U.S. Constitution did not protect a right to abortion through the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment,3 the Court overruled Roe v. Wade4 and Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v. Casey.
5 Abortion, it explained, differed from other protected acts because abortion destroyed potential life.6 Deeming rational basis review appropriate,7 the Court concluded that the Mississippi law was rationally related to what the Court accepted as legitimate state …

High-Risk Individuals And Naloxone Use: Implications For Thn Programs In Rural Appalachian Communities, Victor Garcia, Lisa Mccann, Erick Lauber, Christian Vaccaro, Melissa Swauger, Alex Daniel Heckert
Journal of Appalachian Health
Introduction: Take-home naloxone (THN) is being made available across rural Appalachia to curb opioid overdose fatalities. Despite this initiative, some opioid users do not possess naloxone, and if they do, do not administer it to others.
Purpose: Research findings on risk factors that contribute to opioid overdose are presented. These factors, identified in a sample of 16 overdose cases, are (1) early onset age of opioid use; (2) progressive opioid use; (3) a transition from pain medication to heroin and fentanyl; (4) fears of being arrested at a naloxone intervention if first responders are contacted, and (5) limited knowledge of …

To Legitimacy And Beyond: A Reform Agenda To Restore Public Confidence In The Federal Courts, Charles G. Geyh
Articles by Maurer Faculty
The article begins by describing he ongoing cycle of anti-court sentiment directed at the federal courts. It situates that cycle in historical context, to the end of showing how independence norms have evolved to constrain more draconian efforts to curb the courts in those cycles. The article then explains why the latest cycle is unusually aggressive and why norms that have protected the judiciary’s independence for generations may be at risk if public skepticism of the courts reaches the point of undermining the judiciary’s perceived legitimacy. Next, the article sorts through the definitional clutter that complicates assessments of whether the …

The conserved process of cell division in bacteria has been a long-standing target for antimicrobials, although there are few examples of potent broad-spectrum compounds that inhibit this process. Most currently available compounds acting on division are directed towards the FtsZ protein, a self-assembling GTPase that is a central element of the division machinery in most bacteria. Benzodioxane-benzamides are promising candidates, but poorly explored in Gram-negatives. We have tested a number of these compounds on E. coli FtsZ and found that many of them significantly stabilized the polymers against disassembly and reduced the GTPase activity. Reconstitution in crowded cell-like conditions showed …

Social-Emotional Learning: Preschool Teachers’ Perspectives From Urban And Rural Contexts, Seema Lasi, Khushal Khan, Noreen Afzal
Human Development Programme
Social-emotional learning (SEL) is an integral part of holistic child development. The early years of life are the best window of opportunity when children acquire self-regulation which stays with them throughout their lives. A qualitative exploratory design with focus group discussions (FGDs) was used for preschool teachers’ perspectives on SEL from urban and rural areas of Pakistan. Five (5) FGDs were organized, each with 8 to 10 teachers. Insights were highlighted by teachers from urban and rural contexts. Urban schoolteachers demonstrated a better understanding of SEL as compared to rural schoolteachers. The main themes identified during the analysis were teachers' …

Is A Ban On Non-Competes Supported By Empirical Evidence?, Sarah Oh Lam, Thomas Lenard, Scott Wallsten
Fordham Journal of Corporate & Financial Law
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has proposed a rule to declare virtually all non-compete agreements unfair methods of competition under Section 5 of the FTC Act and therefore, illegal. However, the empirical literature on non-compete agreements cited by the FTC in its Notice for Proposed Rulemaking (“NPRM”) shows mixed results on earnings, job creation, firm formation, entrepreneurship, training, investment, and firm value. Evidence in other current studies also does not support an economy-wide ban. The FTC concludes that the proposed rule would yield net benefits even though by its own admission it lacks the information necessary to conduct a …

The Public’S Companies, Andrew K. Jennings
Fordham Journal of Corporate & Financial Law
This Essay uses a series of survey studies to consider how public understandings of public and private companies map into urgent debates over the role of the corporation in American society. Does a social-media company, for example, owe it to its users to follow the free-speech principles embodied in the First Amendment? May corporate managers pursue environmental, social, and governance (“ESG”) policies that could reduce short-term or long-term profits? How should companies respond to political pushback against their approaches to free expression or ESG?
The studies’ results are consistent with understandings that both public and private companies have greater public …

The Indigenous knowledge presented in this report is the cultural and intellectual property of those who have shared it. The purpose of the report is to communicate the knowledge shared with us to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to help inform the Species Status Assessment and …
The Problem With The “Non-Class” Class: An Urgent Call For Improved Gatekeepers In Merger Objection Litigation, Josh Molder
The Problem With The “Non-Class” Class: An Urgent Call For Improved Gatekeepers In Merger Objection Litigation, Josh Molder
Fordham Journal of Corporate & Financial Law
Until recently, class actions dominated merger objection litigation. However, plaintiff’s lawyers have constructed a “non-class” class where an individual suit can benefit from the leverage of a certified class without ever meeting the stringent class certification requirements of Federal Rules of Civil Procedure 23. This new development has initiated a shift in merger objection litigation where plaintiffs are increasingly filing individual suits instead of class actions. However, this shift has left shareholders vulnerable to collusive settlements because plaintiff’s attorneys have significant control over these suits and a strong incentive to settle quickly for a substantial fee. Additionally, corporate defendants are …
