“I Remember Feeling Pretty Darn Lucky”: Crafting Family Resilience In Response To A Medical Emergency, Sophie Downing Dec 2023

“I Remember Feeling Pretty Darn Lucky”: Crafting Family Resilience In Response To A Medical Emergency, Sophie Downing

Communication: Faculty Scholarship

Through a combination of autoethnographic reflections and oral history interviews with my parents, I explore the ways in which we enacted resilience throughout my father’s unexpected hospitalization, rehabilitation, and his subsequent years of recovery, both individually and communally. Using communication theory of resilience (CTR) as a framework, I identify the ways in which we engaged in the five processes outlined by Buzzanell (2010): crafting normalcy, emphasizing action while backgrounding negative feelings, affirming identity anchors, relying on communication networks, and employing alternative logics. I then propose three additional processes of enacting resilience that emerged from my family’s insights: enacting performative resilience, …

Bedford Springs Resort: A Political And Social Annex Of Antebellum America: 1840-1860, Sara Grace Davis-Leonard

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Antebellum America has been described as a period of turbulence for the nation as the North and the South grew farther apart through sectionalism. While voters relied upon the increasing partisan press to inform them of debates in Washington and the often-deliberate decision to forgo the ultimate decision on slavery, in private politicians forged friendships through social events such as parties and dinners. When the Congressional session ended in early summer, politicians often accompanied by their families would travel north to Saratoga Springs or west to the much cooler climates of the mountain resorts: Bedford Springs, White Sulphur Springs, Warm …

Multiple cancers exhibit aberrant protein arginine methylation by both type I arginine methyltransferases, predominately protein arginine methyltransferase 1 (PRMT1) and to a lesser extent PRMT4, and by type II PRMTs, predominately PRMT5. Here, we perform targeted proteomics following inhibition of PRMT1, PRMT4, and PRMT5 across 12 cancer cell lines. We find that inhibition of type I and II PRMTs suppresses phosphorylated and total ATR in cancer cells. Loss of ATR from PRMT inhibition results in defective DNA replication stress response activation, including from PARP inhibitors. Inhibition of type I and II PRMTs is synergistic with PARP inhibition regardless of homologous …

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

In this issue of the Journal of Bacteriology, N. J. Bonde, E. A. Wood, K. S. Myers, M. Place, J. L. Keck, and M. M. Cox (J Bacteriol 205:e00184-23, 2023, https://doi.org/10.1128/jb.00184-23) used an unbiased transposon-sequencing (Tn-seq) screen to identify proteins required for life when cells lose the RecG branched-DNA helicase (synthetic lethality). The proteins’ identities indicate pathways that prevent endogenous DNA damage, pathways that prevent its homology-directed repair (HDR) “strand-exchange” intermediates between sister chromosomes, and pathways that resolve those intermediates. All avoid intermediate pile-up, which blocks chromosome segregation, causing “death-by-recombination.” DNA damage is managed to regulate crucial but …
