Songs Of Nostalgia: Creative Activism And Exile In Elia Suleiman’S "It Must Be Heaven" And Panah Panahi’S "Hit The Road", Hania A.M. Nashef Oct 2023

Songs Of Nostalgia: Creative Activism And Exile In Elia Suleiman’S "It Must Be Heaven" And Panah Panahi’S "Hit The Road", Hania A.M. Nashef

Regards

The final scene of Elia Suleiman’s film, It Must Be Heaven (2019), ends with the actor/director sitting in an Arab bar in the city of Haifa, while the young crowd is dancing to “Arabyon Ana” (2000) by Lebanese singer Yuri Mrakadi. The Arabic music is a testimony to a Palestinian-Arab culture that resists erasure. The songs in Suleiman’s film not only form part of the soundtrack and provide a commentary on the unfolding scenes but also deliver a chronology of events that firmly places the country within its Arab milieu. Mirroring the thoughts of the main character, they highlight issues …

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

So far, the trade and spice route historiography has focused on social, political, and economic aspects. This discussion is also fragmentarily or is part of another focus. No studies have discussed the relationship between local knowledge practices, spice routes, power networks, and Islamization. However, the spice trade and Islamization are two intersecting events important for their connection with the local culture. This article assumes that there was a local knowledge used as a strategy by the Banten rulers as a response to trade, Islamization, and power networks in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It finds that Sultan Maulana Yusuf’s policy, …

Islands, Maps, And Lontara’; Bugis Counter-Mapping On A Nineteenth-Century Map Of Nusantara, Aditya Bayu Perdana, Muhammad Buana

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This article focuses on a Bugis nautical chart of Nusantara (the Malay Archipelago) from the early nineteenth century known as the Utrecht Map. There are only a few surviving copies of similar Bugis maps, all confiscated from local “pirates” during the colonial era. While graphical elements of the map undoubtedly point to prototypical European maps, careful analysis of its annotations reveals extensive linguistic modification better to reflect Bugis maritime knowledge. Not only are they completely written in Lontara’, the indigenous script of the Bugis, Euro-centric toponyms from contemporaneous maps are consistently replaced by locally derived toponyms from an oral and …

Between Naturalistic And Theatrical: Contrast Narratives As Context-Based Space Explorations, Luthfia Hananti, Resza Riskiyanto

ARSNET

The study explores contrasting narratives and the intersections between them as the basis of context-based space exploration. Narrative approaches demonstrate possibilities of creatively expanding the design process with its values on imagination and storytelling. Yet, with the focus of stories as the basis of narrative exploration, discussion about its relation to context is often limited. This study introduces the exploration of contrast narratives by exploring the intersection between the naturalistic and theatrical conception of space presented in Tim Burton's 1990 film titled Edward Scissorhands. The close relation of a film to imagination provides possibilities for a more rich and extensive …

Exemplary Centre And "Terra Incognita"; Excursions, Diplomacy, And Appropriation Of Colonial Knowledge In Belu, Timor, Hans Hägerdal

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The article analyses early European knowledge about Belu, a historical region in Central Timor which, although “belonging” mostly to the Dutch colonial sphere, still had a position of cultural-ritual centrality on a Timor-wide level. Before the mid-nineteenth century, the region was, from a Dutch point of view, largely unknown in terms of political hierarchies, social structure, and economic opportunities. However, three officially commissioned authors, A.G. Brouwer, W.L. Rogge, and H.J. Grijzen, wrote extensive reports about Belu in 1849, 1865, and 1904, in which they attempted to understand local society and the opportunities they offered the colonial state. The article explores …

Signal crayfish consume inaccessible plant matter and detritus, feed various game fish, engineer riverbeds, and are even harvested commercially for human consumption. Recognizing signal crayfishes’ multifaceted ecological and social significance, the purpose of this study was to assess the habitat factors that impact signal crayfish health and behavior in the Tryon Creek Watershed. Data collection revealed that overall, Tryon Creek crayfish were disproportionately likely to be observed in locations with high infrastructure presence levels; substrates composed of silt/sand or a combination of boulders and cobbles; culverts, …

Poetic Meaning And Perspectives On Sport: Introducing Kinesiology Undergraduates To Mysticism, Celene Tehya Balido, Coby Allen Barbar, Mia Isabella Napolitano, Jenner Robert Sapienza

International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities

Mysticism in sport is a unique experience in which someone is engulfed by a feeling of existence both in real time and stopped time as well as entering a realm of unparalleled reality surrounded by mind and spirit (Higgs & Braswell, 2004). Despite the inexplicability of mystic experiences, poetry provides one means of deciphering them. The purpose of this article is to model how sport participants could be engaged in a process of self-reflective inquiry, then self-author scholarship that synthesizes and interprets the results of their self-reflection. During their 2021 Winter Quarter course on perspectives in physical activity, four undergraduate …

We Deliver: The Condition Of The Woman Academic In India Today, Ananya Dutta Gupta Oct 2023

We Deliver: The Condition Of The Woman Academic In India Today, Ananya Dutta Gupta

Journal of International Women's Studies

This auto-ethnographic essay draws upon Foucault’s Archaeology of Knowledge to discuss the condition of Indian women in the Humanities in academia today. While acknowledging the encouragingly gender-inclusive projections in India’s National Education Policy vision statement from 2020, I argue for more probing engagement with the concrete reality of being a woman teacher and researcher in the increasingly competitive and corporatized milieu of higher education. My methodology has been a close reading of the NEP’s vision statement to analyze recurrences of terms and concepts as pointers to its discursive field. I argue that this policy statement implicitly envisions an empowered new-age …

Are We Safe? An Investigation Of Eve-Teasing (Public Sexual Harassment) In India, Usha Rana

Journal of International Women's Studies

In recent years, many countries have tightened the rules against harassment in the workplace and violence in the home. On the other hand, incidences of sexual harassment against women in public places have not been paid sufficient attention. Developing countries like India have recorded an increase in sexual harassment cases in public places due to the increase in participation of women in activities outside the home such as education and employment. In India, the term “Eve-teasing” is a euphemism for sexual harassment in public places. Eve-teasing is identified as a significant problem in the patriarchal society of India that carries …

Relevance Of The Remedial Secession Theory For Indonesia's Territorial Integrity, Heribertus Jaka Triyana

Indonesian Journal of International Law

This article aims to analyse the remedial secession theory in international law relevant to the current international armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine waged by Russia’s recognition of Donbask and Luhansk independence. Then, it presents prescriptive suggestions for further use of judicial and arbitral procedures. The method of analysis is based upon the examination and scrutiny of factual materials, including relevant international cases regarding the region, as well as interviews engaged by the author with officials …

Differentiating between real and imaginary places on a map is not necessarily a strength of undergraduates--or ChatGPT--in a basic world regional geography course. Using a video, The 15 Countries that people think are FAKE, as a launching tool, students undertake an exercise in determining which places are real.
