Agricultural Groundcover Update October 2023, Justin Laycock
Natural resources published reports
Summary
- About 98% of the grainbelt had adequate vegetative groundcover (more than 50%) to prevent wind erosion in October 2023. This amount of groundcover is normal at the end of spring and pre-harvest in most areas.
- There was a larger than average area with 51–60% groundcover, and groundcover in these areas is expected to reduce over summer to below 50%.
- About 2% of the grainbelt (293,000 ha) had less than 50% groundcover, which is inadequate to prevent wind erosion. Mullewa to Morawa Ag Soil Zone had the highest risk of wind erosion and 8% of this farmland had inadequate groundcover. …

Hide Your Distance: Privacy Risks And Protection In Spatial Accessibility Analysis, Liyue Fan, Luca Bonomi
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Measuring spatial accessibility to healthcare resources and facilities has long been an important problem in public health. For example, during disease outbreaks, sharing spatial accessibility data such as individual travel distances to health facilities is vital to policy making and designing effective interventions. However, sharing these data may raise privacy concerns, as information about individual data contributors (e.g., health status and residential address) may be disclosed. In this work, we investigate those unintended information leakage in spatial accessibility analysis. Specifically, we are interested in understanding whether sharing data for spatial accessibility computations may disclose individual participation (i.e., membership inference) and …

Background: We identify chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) manifestations associated with how rhinologists assess CRS control, with a focus on patient perspectives (patient-reported CRS control).
Methods: Fifteen rhinologists were provided with real-world data from 200 CRS patients. Participating rhinologists first classified patients' CRS control as "controlled," "partly controlled," and "uncontrolled" using seven CRS manifestations reflecting European Position Paper on Rhinosinusitis and Nasal Polyps (EPOS) CRS control criteria (nasal obstruction, drainage, impaired smell, facial pain/pressure, sleep disturbance, use of systemic antibiotics/corticosteroids in past 6 months, and nasal endoscopy findings) and patient-reported CRS control. They then classified patients' CRS control without knowledge of patient-reported …

A Country Of Defiance : Mapping The Casamance In Senegal, Mark W. Deets
Ohio University Press Open Access Books
A historiographical analysis of human geography and a social history of nationalist separatism and cultural identity in southern Senegal.
This book is a spatial history of the conflict in Casamance, the portion of Senegal located south of The Gambia. Mark W. Deets traces the origins of the conflict back to the start of the colonial period in a select group of contested spaces and places where the seeds of nationalism and separatism took root. Each chapter examines the development of a different piece of the still unrealized Casamançais nation: river, rice field, forest, school, and stadium. Each of these locations …

Income Inequality, Social Mobility, And Electoral Participation In The U.S. Counties: Revisiting The Inequality-Participation Nexus, Dongkyu Kim, Mi-Son Kim, Sang-Jic Lee
Political Science Faculty Publications
Previous research has provided contested hypotheses about the impact of income inequality on electoral participation. This study reexamines the debate between conflict and relative power theories by focusing on a largely ignored factor: social mobility. We argue that social mobility conditions the inequality-participation nexus by alleviating the frustration, class conflict, and efficacy gaps between the rich and the poor that the prevailing theories assume income inequality to create. By utilizing the Cooperative Congressional Election Survey, we test this argument focusing on US counties. Our analysis confirms that the effects of income inequality on citizens’ likelihood of voting vary depending on …
Redesigning A Culturally Responsive Elementary Classroom, Emily Rose Bascelli
Redesigning A Culturally Responsive Elementary Classroom, Emily Rose Bascelli
Theses & Dissertations
With the roll-out of the Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education framework (2018) for New York State schools, teachers have been given guidelines for creating a welcoming and affirming classroom environment. Therefore, it is critical to focus on how teachers envision and redesign culturally responsive physical classroom spaces. This grounded theory in a bounded case study used culturally responsive pedagogy and teacher positionality to construct a theory about how teachers engage in the redesigning of classrooms. This research collected data from three elementary school teachers who participated in their district’s classroom redesign initiative and self-identified as having culturally responsive goals for their design. …

The State-Led Platformisation Of Financial Services: Frictionless Ecosystems And An Expansive Logic Of "Smartness" In Singapore, Orlando Woods, Tim Bunnell, Lily Kong
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
This article explores the role of the state in driving the platformisation of industry, and in doing so offers a counterpoint to scholarship that focusses on the exploitative effects of private sector-led platformisation. That scholarship views platformisation as the latest incarnation of neoliberal urbanism, with the profit-maximising tendencies of the private sector driving the proliferation of platforms throughout everyday life. Notwith- standing, there remains a need to consider alternative models of platformisation. Drawing on 31 interviews with architects of Singapore’s Smart Nation initiative, we consider the state-led platformisation of financial services. We argue that state-led platformisation can open up marketplaces …
The Illusory Infrastructure Of Ink: Machinic Bodies And Epidermic Affects In Singapore, Orlando Woods
The Illusory Infrastructure Of Ink: Machinic Bodies And Epidermic Affects In Singapore, Orlando Woods
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
This paper advances recent theorisations of the body-as-infrastructure by exploring the premise that there are multiple bodily infrastructures at play at any one time. It focusses on three infrastructural formations – the body, the skin that encases the body, and tattoos as visual inscriptions on the skin – that jostle against each other for representational primacy. The layering of infrastructure-upon-infrastructure leads to understandings of the self that exist in a state of tension with societal norms and the illusions of self-representation. Indeed, it is the intersecting gazes of society and the self that cause these infrastructures to become disaggregated, and …
Climatologies Of Convection Across The United States, Kristofer S. Tuftedal
Climatologies Of Convection Across The United States, Kristofer S. Tuftedal
Electronic Dissertations and Theses, 2010-current
Tropospheric convection is one of the most important contributors to the Earth’s climate system through its transport of heat, moisture, and momentum. The hazards associated with convection (i.e., tornadoes, hail, lightning, flooding, damaging wind, etc.) are one of the largest threats to life and property. Despite the importance and wide-reaching impacts of convection, many processes both internal and external to storms are not well understood. One way to elucidate convective processes in a bulk sense is through the use of large climatologies. Radar data provide both microphysical and kinematic information about these convective storms and their hazards on fine spatiotemporal …

A current systematic literature review has stated several deficiencies and knowledge gaps in biometeorology research conducted in Brazil. This finding encouraged a group of local professionals in the field to foster research initiatives in topics and regions yet unexplored in the country. Motivated by that, the group organized the first Brazilian Symposium on Human Biometeorology between July 4 and 8, 2022, in Natal (RN), northeastern Brazil. This paper aims to summarize the main studies presented at the symposium and highlight a few ideas that could be pursued next in human biometeorology in future research initiatives.
Hydrometeorological Analysis Of A Flooding Event In Fujairah Emirate, Ahmad Abed Rabu Albreiki
Hydrometeorological Analysis Of A Flooding Event In Fujairah Emirate, Ahmad Abed Rabu Albreiki
Theses
This thesis conducts an extensive hydrological examination of a flooding event in Fujairah emirate, a partially dry landscape distinguished by its exceptional land utilization and soil composition. This research reveals crucial knowledge about how Fujairah Emirate basins behave hydrologically by fusing land use, land cover classification, hydrological soil groups, weighted Curve Number (CN), maximum discharge computations, and return period evaluations. One fundamental discovery is the significant differences in CN values across the region's basins. These differences highlight the powerful influence of land use and soil composition on the likelihood of water runoff. Basins with urbanization and impermeable surfaces tend to …

Coastal Bathymetry Of The United Arab Emirates Using Satellite-Based Remote Sensing Data, Naser Salem Aldahmani
Theses
Bathymetry is the study of the bed under the water's surface, giving us the water's depth. The Thesis will be about studying the coastal area of the UAE by using satellite images that can help access large regions of the UAE Coast. Also, by using a history of 5 years of satellite visible bands and NIR images, we can see the change of depth near the coastal. The benefit of that study will help to build ship baths through shallow water and to go in and out of ports of UAE. Early warnings of the sea level increasing near the …

Water science has become “pluralistic” (Evers et al., 2017) to collectively (yet differently) understand complex water systems with promising combinations of compatible and complementary disciplines. The contemporary context of water science discusses the more severe water-society challenges of the Anthropocene. Yet, the conversation is not definitive; indeed, there are unending debates between quantitative and qualitative research approaches including methodological choices and accuracies along questions of scales, themes, and politics of funding. Transdisciplinary applications and cross-sectoral engagements offer solution-oriented water just trajectories – scientists, practitioners, and user groups designing and deploying “solutions” related to actual interventions in addressing water …

Subseasonal Clustering Of Atmospheric Rivers Over The Western United States, Emily Slinskey, Paul Loikith, Naomi Goldenson, Jesse Norris, Jesse Hall
Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations
The serial occurrence of atmospheric rivers (ARs) along the US West Coast can lead to prolonged and exacerbated hydrologic impacts, threatening flood-control and water-supply infrastructure due to soil saturation and diminished recovery time between storms. Here a statistical approach for quantifying subseasonal temporal clustering among extreme events is applied to a 41-year (1979–2019) wintertime AR catalog across the western United States (US). Observed AR occurrence, compared against a randomly distributed AR timeseries with the same average event density, reveals temporal clustering at a greater-than-random rate across the western US with a distinct geographical pattern. Compared to the Pacific Northwest, significant …

Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences
Psychological violence is characterized by systematic denigration and humiliation of the partner (victim). It is an insidious and manipulative behavior put in place to ensure that the victim begins to doubt themselves, and their own judgments, to the point of feeling confused and wrong. This behavior pattern is called Gaslighting and the personality traits are characterized by lack of empathy, psychopathy, narcissism and Machiavellianism. These three conditions are part of the so-called dark triad and distinguished by the lack of empathy. The aim of this study is to explore psychological aspects and consequences of Gaslighting phenomena. This systematic review was …
