Nero's Eastern Policy And The Peace Of Rhandeia, Henry Smith Jan 2023

Nero's Eastern Policy And The Peace Of Rhandeia, Henry Smith

All ETDs from UAB

This thesis will argue that Corbulo’s campaigns in Armenia and the subsequent Peace of Rhandeia were reflective of a longstanding foreign policy which had been adopted in the aftermath of the ambush at Teutoburg Forest and continued under Augustus’ successors. Nearly every aspect of the campaign, from the composition of the army, to the strategy employed by Corbulo, was an expression of the post-Augustan shift from expansion to defense. In place of conquest, the maintenance of prestige and the projection of power became the primary objectives of the Roman emperors, including Nero. The war in Armenia was fought to maintain …

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design For Low-Income Residents (B40) In Sabah, Malaysia, Zuraini Alias, Noor Malinda Mohamed Mohan, Mohd Reza Abdol Ghani, Mazni Saad, Mokhtar Abdullah

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)

Safety, facilities, and environment are known to be among the core factors that influence the Quality of Life (QoL) of neighbourhood communities. This study evaluates the low-income residents’ (B40) QoL and seeks to clarify whether People’s Housing Program Environment (PPRE) and Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) can be used collaboratively to improve the QoL of the People’s Housing Project (PPR) communities. This study hypothesizes that implementing CPTED is one of the strategies that may enhance the feeling of safety in residential environments. This …

Learning From Mistakes: A Guide To Expanding The Oversight Board, Kevin Frazier Jan 2023

Learning From Mistakes: A Guide To Expanding The Oversight Board, Kevin Frazier

Catholic University Journal of Law and Technology

More than 4.4 billion people use social media. A few platforms attract a significant number of those users—for example, 2.9 billion people use Facebook, 2.3 billion use YouTube, and 1.2 billion use WeChat. How these major platforms govern themselves with respect to content moderation has an impact on billions of users and may lead to policy changes across other platforms that affect billions more. That is why it is so important to analyze Meta’s Oversight Board—an independent body created for the purpose of “promot[ing] free expression by making principled, independent decisions regarding content on Facebook and Instagram by issuing recommendations …

The Chains That Bind: Gender, Disability, Race, And It Accommodations, Eleanor T. Loiacono, Shiya Cao Jan 2023

The Chains That Bind: Gender, Disability, Race, And It Accommodations, Eleanor T. Loiacono, Shiya Cao

Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Books

This chapter explores intersectionality of gender, disability, and race relevant to Information Technology (IT) accommodations and employment. More specifically, we investigate individuals’ experiences and differences in receiving IT accommodations as an organizational diversity intervention that helps disabled employees integrate into the workplace. The goal of this chapter is to seek a better understanding of individual differences in the accommodation process and how to empower disabled women in the workplace. To do so, by applying the Individual Differences Theory of Gender and IT (IDTGIT), we focus on the experiences disabled men and women have with regard to IT accommodations as well …

Cerebral Phaeohyphomycosis At A Tertiary Healthcare Center In Saudi Arabia, Mayyadah H. Alabdely, Abdullah S. Alolayan, Reem S. Almaghrabi, Hail M. Al-Abdely

Neurosciences

Objectives: To report cases of cerebral phaeohyphomycosis at a tertiary hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Phaeohyphomycetes are a widely distributed group of fungi whose cell walls contain 1,8 dihydroxynaphthalene-melanin. Cerebral infections caused by these fungi are uncommon and primarily associated with neurotrophic phaeohyphomycetes. Methods: In January of 2020 we looked back to identify cases of culture-positive cerebral phaeohyphomycosis from our medical records at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Data on demographics, potential risk factors, clinical presentation, treatment, and outcomes were analyzed. Results: Twelve cases of cerebral phaeohyphomycosis were identified, of which 4 were caused …

Investigating Perceptions Of Out-Groups In Sport And United States Politics, Cody T. Havard, Elizabeth Theiss-Morse Jan 2023

Investigating Perceptions Of Out-Groups In Sport And United States Politics, Cody T. Havard, Elizabeth Theiss-Morse

Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications

The current study investigated how fans and supporters of sport teams and political parties in the United States viewed relevant out-groups and out-group members. Specifically, perceptions of rival sport teams and political parties were compared to determine how fans and supporters differed in their views and likely behaviors toward out-groups. Findings showed that sport fans reported more positive attitudes toward their favorite teams and more negative attitudes of the rival team than in politics. However, political supporters reported more negative perceptions and likely behaviors toward the out-group than fans of sport. Additional analysis revealed that the common in-group influenced perceptions. …

Role-Reversibility, Ai, And Equitable Justice — Or: Why Mercy Cannot Be Automated, Stephen E. Henderson, Kiel Brennan-Marquez Jan 2023

Role-Reversibility, Ai, And Equitable Justice — Or: Why Mercy Cannot Be Automated, Stephen E. Henderson, Kiel Brennan-Marquez

Faculty Articles

A few years ago, we developed the concept of “role-reversibility” in AI governance: the idea that it matters whether a party exercising judgment is reciprocally vulnerable to the effects of judgment. This idea, we argued, supplies a deontic reason to maintain certain spheres of human judgment even if (or when) truly intelligent machines become demonstrably superior in every utilitarian sense. While computer science remains far from that holy grail, generative AI is raging through systems as diverse as healthcare, finance, advertising, law, and academe, making it imperative to further shore up our claim. We do so by situating role-reversibility within …
