Educate To Empower : Reforming Education For Youth-Led Climate Readiness, Souvana Samy Ismael Abdelmoumen Mohamed Sep 2025

Educate To Empower : Reforming Education For Youth-Led Climate Readiness, Souvana Samy Ismael Abdelmoumen Mohamed

COP30

This policy paper explores the pressing need to equip young people in vulnerable countries with the knowledge and skills to face the climate crisis. Today’s youth, the largest generation in history, are growing up on the frontlines of climate change, often in places least prepared to respond. Yet in many national education systems, climate literacy is still absent or underdeveloped, leaving students without the tools to understand the challenges shaping their future. The paper identifies three main barriers: climate topics missing from school curricula, limited opportunities for youth to engage in decision-making, and chronic underfunding of climate education. Drawing on …

From Awareness To Action: The Educational Pillar Of Capacity Building And Ace, Eman Akrout

COP30

Education has always been identified as the most potent medium for sustaining long-term climate action by helping students, teachers, and communities understand climate risks and participate in solution building. This literature review will therefore focus on how education helps build capacity and contributes to Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE). As recent reports indicated by IPCC and UNESCO have also highlighted, climate education heightens the level of awareness supportive of green jobs while improving the resilience of a community. However, there is a lack of climate material in most schools with untrained teachers posing a huge gap in the international efforts …

Climate Education For A Changing World: Reforming Curricula For Long-Term Readiness, Ines Kolsi Sep 2025

Climate Education For A Changing World: Reforming Curricula For Long-Term Readiness, Ines Kolsi

COP30

Despite the growing climate crisis, many national education systems, especially in the Global South, still treat climate change as a marginal topic. This gap hinders young people’s ability to understand, adapt to, and address environmental challenges. Grounded in the Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE) framework under the UNFCCC, this paper examines climate education reforms in Italy and Kenya and critically analyzes existing frameworks. It argues that effective climate education requires more than guidance: it needs binding commitments, institutional mandates, and legal backing. Key recommendations include embedding climate education in national laws and curricula, integrating ACE priorities into Nationally Determined Contributions …

BACKGROUND: Clinicians currently lack an effective means for identifying youth with type 1 diabetes (T1D) who are at risk for experiencing glycemic deterioration between diabetes clinic visits. As a result, their ability to identify youth who may optimally benefit from targeted interventions designed to address rising glycemic levels is limited. Although electronic health records (EHR)-based risk predictions have been used to forecast health outcomes in T1D, no study has investigated the potential for using EHR data to identify youth with T1D who will experience a clinically significant rise in glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) ≥0.3% (approximately 3 mmol/mol) between diabetes clinic visits. …

Climate change and increasing availability of resources such as carbon dioxide are modifying forest functioning worldwide, but the effects of these changes on forest structure are unclear. As additional resources become available, for example, through CO2 fertilization or nitrogen deposition, large trees, with greater access to light, may be expected to gain further advantages. Conversely, smaller light-suppressed trees might benefit more if their light compensation point changes, while bigger trees may be the most negatively impacted by increasing heat and drought. We assessed recent changes in the structure of Earth’s largest tropical forest by analysing 30 years of Amazonian …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The Catholic Church and the Acculturation of Immigrants to the United States: Pittsburgh and the Slovak Community During the Gilded Age and Progressive Era.” Throughout the nineteenth century, hundreds of thousands of immigrants arrived in the United States from southern and eastern Europe, marking a radical change in the cultural and social background of those who arrived in search of work in the industrial world that had come to dominate the economy of the nation. This dissertation will examine the role that the Catholic Church played in aiding these mostly Catholic immigrants in their attempt to conform to and assimilate …

Probabilistic Intervals Around Population Forecasts: A New Approach With A Subnational Example Using Washington State Counties, David A. Swanson, Jeff Tayman Sep 2025

Probabilistic Intervals Around Population Forecasts: A New Approach With A Subnational Example Using Washington State Counties, David A. Swanson, Jeff Tayman

Publications, Reports and Presentations

Population forecasts produced by governments at all levels are used in the public sector, the private sector, and by researchers. They have been primarily produced using deterministic methods. This paper shows how a method for producing measures of uncertainty can be applied to existing subnational population forecasts while meeting several important criteria, including the concept of utility. The paper includes an assessment of the efficacy of the method by: (1) examining the change in uncertainty intervals it produces by population size and population growth rate; and (2) comparing the width and temporal change of the uncertainty intervals it produces to …

Spices On The Winds Of Trade: The Postcolonial Geopolitics Of Food In Amitav Ghosh’S Fiction And Non-Fiction, Suhasini Vincent Sep 2025

Spices On The Winds Of Trade: The Postcolonial Geopolitics Of Food In Amitav Ghosh’S Fiction And Non-Fiction, Suhasini Vincent

The Journal of International Relations, Peace Studies, and Development

In The Nutmeg’s Curse: Parables for a Planet in Crisis, Amitav Ghosh traces the journey of spices from the Spice Islands, or the Moluccas in Indonesia to Europe. Nestled between Celebes and New Guinea, these islands with their rich volcanic soil, emerged as the epicentre of global spice production, offering the world mace, nutmeg, cloves, and pepper in the 16th century. The nutmeg’s two hemispheres hold hidden meaning in today’s world: one shell portraying its commercial merits as a spice and the other elusive crust remaining open to interpretation. The inconspicuous nutmeg, a coveted spice during the ‘Spice Race’, …

Constitutional Dictatorship And Enemies Within: A Constitutional And Historical Analysis Of The Alien And Sedition Acts From John Adams To Donald Trump, Robert T.F. Downes Sep 2025

Constitutional Dictatorship And Enemies Within: A Constitutional And Historical Analysis Of The Alien And Sedition Acts From John Adams To Donald Trump, Robert T.F. Downes

The Journal of International Relations, Peace Studies, and Development

This article traces the historical evolution of U.S. presidential emergency powers, examining how successive administrations have exploited national crises to consolidate executive authority and target perceived “enemies within” by criminalizing immigration, suppressing dissent, and suspending constitutional rights and liberties — including due process — in the name of national security. It begins by defining key concepts — constitutional dictatorship, states of exception, imperial presidency, and unitary executive theory — and situates these concepts within long-standing critiques of the U.S. Constitution’s flawed, anti-democratic design. The analysis surveys historical episodes, including John Adams’s 1798 Alien and Sedition Acts, Abraham …

Facilitating The Move Towards A Wellbeing Economy Through Supporting Infrastructure: A Review Of Frontrunner Countries, Henry Bartelet, Vincent De Gooyert Sep 2025

Facilitating The Move Towards A Wellbeing Economy Through Supporting Infrastructure: A Review Of Frontrunner Countries, Henry Bartelet, Vincent De Gooyert

Quantitative Methods and Information Technology Faculty Publications

As more governments seek to shift beyond gross domestic product (GDP) as the dominant measure of progress, the concept of a “wellbeing economy” has gained traction. This approach prioritizes human and environmental wellbeing through broader, more holistic policy frameworks. A central question in this transition is what the implications of shifts to a wellbeing economy are for infrastructure investments. In this study, we identify four frontrunner governments, Bhutan, Scotland, New Zealand, and Wales, that have formally adopted wellbeing economy principles. We analyse how each operationalizes the concept and assess the resulting implications for infrastructure planning and investment. Despite shared goals, …

Snow Avalanches And The Impact Of Climate‐Linked Extreme Events On Mountain Wildlife Population Dynamics And Resilience, Kevin S. White, Taal Levi, Eran Hood, Chris T. Darimont

Faculty, Staff, and Students

Climate is changing rapidly in mountain environments, giving rise to increasing variability in weather, incidence of extremeevents, and alteration of the cryosphere. Natural hazards, such as snow avalanches, and the ecological communities they impactmay be particularly sensitive to such change. While avalanches may impose both ‘good’ and ‘bad’ effects on mountain ecosys-tems, the direct impacts that lead to mortality have particularly important implications for future viability and resilience ofslow-growing alpine wildlife populations. Here, we studied a sentinel species of coastal Alaskan mountain environments—themountain goat (Oreamnos americanus) – using long-term field data from individually marked animals (600 individuals over44 years) in …

Better Together: Rural Community Collaboration In North Carolina's Cape Fear Region, Luke Santore, Lillie Greiman, Rayna Sage

Independent Living and Community Participation

The disAbility Resource Center of North Carolina (dRC) has served the Cape Fear region of NC since 2008. The dRC holds to the philosophy that every individual has the right to maximize their abilities, live as independently as possible, and participate fully in their community. In rural NC, the delivery of formal support requires informal trust across people, places, and organizations. In this sense, dRC is a trust broker, facilitating relationships between informal rural support networks and the network of public and nonprofit service providers in the area. dRC does this through being embedded in rural places, earning trust person …

Bard College: An Ecosystem Of Engagement, Jonathan Becker

Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education

Despite its moderate size and rural location, Bard’s civic engagement efforts resonate locally, nationally, and internationally, and have significant public policy impacts. Bard has achieved success by making engagement central to its institutional mission, viewing liberal arts and sci-ences education as both a means and an end of civic engagement efforts, and forging an “ecosystem of engagement” that encourages organizational engineers, links student-led and in-stitutional initiatives, and unites a network of partners across the globe.

Debt Accumulation In Fossil Fuel-Reliant Localities During The Shale Boom And Implications For The Energy Transition, Brandon Charles Sep 2025

Debt Accumulation In Fossil Fuel-Reliant Localities During The Shale Boom And Implications For The Energy Transition, Brandon Charles

Center for Policy Research

The energy transition away from fossil fuels poses long-term economic risks for communities reliant on oil and natural gas production and some may face exceptionally difficult challenges in adapting to the change. Bonds issued by these localities during the shale boom may undermine their financial resilience as shale activity dwindles. Declining tax revenue may undermine their ability to service the debt and maintain the associated physical assets. This study addresses the extent to which local governments in oil- and natural gas-producing communities accumulated significantly more municipal debt during the shale boom than other communities. The analysis uses bond issuance data …

Evaluating Climate Sensitivity To Atmospheric Co2 In Basra, Baghdad And Mosul: Iraq, Dalia A. Mahmood, Luma M. Al-Saadi, Monim H. Al-Jiboori Sep 2025

Evaluating Climate Sensitivity To Atmospheric Co2 In Basra, Baghdad And Mosul: Iraq, Dalia A. Mahmood, Luma M. Al-Saadi, Monim H. Al-Jiboori

Baghdad Science Journal

Iraq has been suffering from a rising surface air temperature (SAT), causing a general deterioration in ecosystems. Climate sensitivity (CS) which refers to the increase in average SAT caused by a duplication of Carbon Dioxide Concentration [CO2], was estimated by transient local climate response (TLCR) and equilibrium local CS (ELCS). The time series of the spatial annual averages for both [CO2] and air temperature were analyzed and a linear regression model was also used to find annual trends in SAT and [CO2]. Based on historical yearly data for CO2 concentrations (2003–2016), CO2 …

Mutual Transformation Through Arts-Based Service Learning With Australian Aboriginal Communities: An Australian Case Study, Anne Power, Dawn Bennett, Brydie-Leigh Bartleet Sep 2025

Mutual Transformation Through Arts-Based Service Learning With Australian Aboriginal Communities: An Australian Case Study, Anne Power, Dawn Bennett, Brydie-Leigh Bartleet

Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education

This paper reports from a national arts-based service-learning project in Australia. Working with pre-service teachers, the paper employs the theoretical framework of sentipensante (sensing/thinking), which has been successfully used in disciplines such as policy, leadership, and communication. Participant stories reveal a network of relations that create understanding of shared existence, and these learning experiences emerge as variously threshold, transformative, and/or troublesome. Findings lend support to the value of flexible, critical service learning approaches, particularly in diverse cultural contexts.

Sociology Through/With Design: Embedding Social Justice Into Design Pedagogy, Anqi Rong, Nina Hansopaheluwakan Edward

Learn X Design Conference Series

Today, many design problems involve complex social and political issues; however, design students often struggle to comprehend the intricacies of these challenges and the depth of existing knowledge. Sociology provides foundational principles for understanding and influencing society, including strategies for supporting communities in combating injustice across various domains. Addressing critical, participatory, inclusive, and speculative design by embedding social justice in design pedagogy allows students/designers to better reflect on the ethical and social consequences of perpetuating stereotypes and provides a starting point for addressing social issues that arise from injustice. We propose that there are three main reasons for incorporating social …
